APPLICATION FAQs DOES MY PERSONAL STATEMENT MATTER? Yes. Abertay takes several factors into account when making an offer, including your personal statement and references. It’s not just about getting the minimum entrance grades. We’re looking for your motivation and commitment to the course. Actual offers made may be based on higher or lower grades than stated.
WHAT ABOUT THE CURRICULUM FOR EXCELLENCE?
WHAT IS THE UCAS TARIFF? The UCAS tariff is a system that measures qualifications using a points based system. Abertay does not normally express offers to applicants with UCAS tariff points. Our offers are based on achieving certain grades and subjects depending on the qualifications you are taking.
CAN I BE CONSIDERED FOR ADVANCED ENTRY?
The University welcomes students from Scotland who have followed Curriculum for Excellence and taken the new SQA qualifications.
Suitably qualified applicants can apply to be considered for direct entry to the later years of an Abertay undergraduate degree programme. If you have Advanced Highers, good A Levels or a relevant Higher National Certificate (HNC), then ask to be considered for direct entry to year 2, allowing you to complete your Honours degree in three years.
DO YOU CONSIDER SQA SCOTTISH BACCALAUREATES FOR ENTRY?
WHAT IF I’M COMING FROM COLLEGE?
We welcome applicants with the new SQA Scottish Baccalaureates. Although they are not generally listed as a separate entry qualification due to space limitations in this prospectus, entry to year 2 of a relevant degree programme may be possible, but will be dependent upon the subjects you’ve taken and grades achieved.
In most cases, a relevant Higher National Certificate (HNC) will enable you to start at year 2 of an Abertay degree programme. Alternatively, a relevant Higher National Diploma (HND) will usually enable you to start at year 3 of a degree programme.
WHAT IF I’M COMING FROM CARE?

Abertay can support you if you’re moving from local authority care to higher education. We guarantee places on our Summer School Preparation Course for all care leavers. We can liaise with social work departments to help you secure financial support while you study and we offer year-round places in university accommodation.
Maybe you’re the first person in your family to consider university or are worried that your family wouldn’t be able to afford for you to go. Maybe you don’t know anyone at university and none of your friends are interested in going. Don’t let that stop you from applying. If you have the talent and motivation for university we want to hear from you, no matter what your background or circumstances.
