The Path of Knowledge
Another poet has said:
ﲑ َﻏ َﻨﺂ ٍء َّواﻟْ ُﺠ ُﻨ ْﻮ ُن ﻓُ ُﻨ ْﻮ ُن ِ ْ ِﺑ َﻐ
ﻴﻬﺎ ُﻣ َﻨﺎﻇ ًِﺮا َ ْﻴJَّ َﺗ َﻤ ً ﻓَ ِﻘ‰ ْ ِ ﺖ ا َ ْن ُﺗ ْﻤ
‘If you desire to be a Faqīĥ (jurist) and Munāẓir (debater) without struggle then this is your insanity.’
ُﺗ َﺤ ِّﻤﻠ َُﻬﺎ ﻓَﺎ ﻟْ ِﻌﻠ ْ ُﻢ ﻛ َْﻴ َﻒ َﻳﳉ ُْﻮ ُن
ﺎل ُد ْو َن َﻣ َﺸ َّﻘ ٍﺔ ِ ﲝب اﻟْ َﻤ ُ َﺴNِ َﺲ ا ْﻛkْ ََو ﻟ
‘When wealth cannot be acquired without hardship and you bear hardship for it, then how can knowledge be acquired (without hardship)?’
Abū Ṭayyib has said:
ﺎم ِ اﻟ َّﺘ َﻤEََ ; َﻛ َﻨ ْﻘ ِﺺ اﻟْﻘَﺎ ِد ِر ْﻳ َﻦ
ًﺒﺎkْ َ; ﺎس ِ َو ﻟ َْﻢ ا َ َر ِﰱ ْ ُﻋ ُﻴ ْﻮ ِب اﻟ َّﻨ
“I never saw any fault amongst the faults of the people (worse than) the inability of those who have power to fulfill (a task) but it was left undone.”
Staying awake during the nights is also extremely important for a student as a poet has said:
ِ ﻓ ََﻤ ْﻦ َﻃﻠ ََﺐ اﻟْ ُﻌ َﻼ َﺳ ِﻬ َﺮ اﻟﻠ َّ َﻴ ْﺎﱃ
ْ ﳉ ّ ِﺪ ُﺗ َ ِْﺑﻘ َْﺪ ِراﻟ ﺎﱃ ِ ﺐ اﻟْ َﻤ َﻌ ُ َﺴNَ ﳉ
‘According to the amount of effort, you will gain elevations and the one who seeks elevations stays awake at night.’
اﻟﻶ ِﱃ ّ ض اﻟْ َﺒ ْﺤ َﺮ َﻣ ْﻦ َﻃﻠ ََﺐ ُ َﻳ ُﻐ ْﻮ
ﺎم ﻟ َْﻴ ًﻼ ُ َﺗ ُﺮ ْو ُم اﻟْ ِﻌ َّﺰ ُﺛ َّﻢ َﺗ َﻨ
‘You aim for respect then you sleep at night? The one who seeks pearls dives in the ocean.’
ﺎﱃ ِ َو ِﻋ ُّﺰاﻟْ َﻤ ْﺮ ِء ِﰱ ْ َﺳ َﻬ ِﺮاﻟﻠ َّ َﻴ
ﺐ ِﺑﺎ ﻟْ ِﻬ َﻤ ِﻢ اﻟْ َﻌ َﻮ ِاﱃ ِ ;ُﻠ ُُّﻮاﻟْﳉ َْﻌ
‘Elevation is through high aims and a person’s respect is in the awakening of the night.’
