GETTING OFF THE GROUND Two American inventive geniuses - one worldfamous, the other little known - took a crack at developing a helicopter. The first, Thomas Edison, failed to get anything off the ground. The second, Emile Berliner, gets credit for the first manned, rotary vertical flight in the United States. Edison began his investigations with an early internal combustion engine that used gun cotton (nitrocellulose) for fuel. This effort caused several engine explosions, destroyed part of his workshop, and seriously burned an assistant. He switched to electric motors but found that they lacked the power needed for successful lift-off and hovering. There, his investigations ended. Despite the failure, Edison's and his colleagues' work provided valuable knowledge about rotor and power-to-weight requirements. Emile Berliner is best known as the virtual founder of the recording industry as he invented and successfully promoted the disk gramophone. He also invented the microphone used in Bell telephones, a new loom design for mass production of cloth, and an effective acoustic tile. Around 1907, Berliner first indulged his interest in helicopters by concentrating on a lightweight engine. Purchasing small, air-cooled rotary automotive engines from the Adams-Farwell plant in Iowa, he improved on the weight and power of the engines and installed two in a primitive fuselage with a lift rotor designed by John Newton Williams. The crude device had to be stabilized by assistants, because it had no control system. But it successfully lifted itself and Williams off the ground by roughly 3 feet. Berliner had introduced the rotary engine to aviation, proving the possibility of powered vertical flight. He later performed the first experiments using a tail rotor to stabilize flight. Sources: J.
