A Year Made Possible By

2017 2018 Annual Report

Dear Friends of ABC of NC:

You did it! Because of your unwavering support this year, ABC of NC helped children with autism and their families find hope, discover opportunities, and realize potential in more ways than ever before. We completed construction on the region’s only comprehensive autism services campus, adding the SECU Autism Clinic and Burress Activity Center to our existing education center. We launched new programs, including Aspire, a transitional classroom for elementary students with autism. We strengthened our resolve to help young men and women develop critical job, community, and independent living skills. We did these things because you trust and invest in our shared vision. Thank you for our wonderful year — a year made possible by you.

turned uncertainty into hope.

361

In 2017/18, ABC of NC served 361 clients across all of its programs, and we expect this number to double in the upcoming year.

Autism reveals itself over time. For parents, the journey from seeing signs of the developmental disability to getting a diagnosis was often marked by uncertainty and waiting. This year, you changed that. The SECU Autism Clinic is reducing wait times for diagnosis and intervention. Replacing uncertainty with hope: You saw the opportunity, and you met it with compassion and resolve.

“As parents, we no longer worry that we aren’t doing enough for our son. Thank you for giving us peace of mind that he has the services he needs to give him the best future possible.” — ABC of NC Parent

opened doors with your support.

116%

In 2017/18, ABC of NC distributed $265,000 in financial aid to children enrolled in our education programs. That’s a 116% increase over last year.

When ABC of NC clinicians diagnose a child with an autism spectrum disorder, it leads to challenging decisions regarding next steps. ABC of NC is here to help. ABC of NC works with families to determine the most effective treatment strategies. Your support opens the door to comprehensive, autism-specific educational and therapeutic programs. At ABC of NC, we provide interventions that help children learn to communicate their needs, manage their frustrations, and form relationships. Thank you for opening the door to a better understanding of autism while helping us provide a lifetime of learning for our clients.

made epic dinosaur tea parties possible.

94%

94% of parents report seeing improvements in their child’s play skills.

Celine entered ABC of NC’s early intervention program when she was two. Her play skills were virtually non-existent. She preferred to line up collections of animals or figurines, unaware of other children. Play doesn’t always come easily to children on the spectrum. That’s why play is serious business at ABC of NC. Through play, our children learn social skills such as sharing, cooperation, and turn-taking. They develop language, build self-esteem, form friendships, and practice finding solutions to problems. If you visit her class today, Celine might invite you to a tea party with her dinosaurs. “ROAR!! Would you like one lump or two?”

ABC of NC offers free parent classes that focus on a variety of topics, including developing play skills. https://abcofnc.org/services/freeparenting-courses/

helped set the course for adventure.

Do you know a child who’s ready to Aspire? https://abcofnc.org/services/aspire/

This year, ABC of NC launched Aspire, a class for elementary children with autism who are at or near academic grade level, but struggle with the social and behavioral demands of school. Aspire isn’t a long-term placement for children. Instead it’s a brief stop on their journey to (or back to) a more traditional classroom setting. As one mother said, “You gave us a place where the sea was calm. We rested for a while, restocked our provisions, and learned valuable navigation strategies that would help us on our way. We’re sad to go, but we’re ready for our next adventure.”

inspired independence.

25%

More than 25% of ABC of NC’s clients are over the age of 13.

Beep. Beep. Beep. That’s the sound of groceries being scanned. It is also the sound of independence. With un- and under-employment rates for individuals with autism approaching 90 percent, many young men and women have disappointing prospects, and their families don’t see a path forward. Whether it’s learning how to do a load of laundry in the mock apartment or bagging groceries in the Food Lion grocery store, opportunities abound at ABC of NC to practice critical independent living and job skills, preparing young adults for a rewarding life beyond ABC of NC. So, don’t be surprised if one day Jakob, in a cheerful voice, asks if you want paper or plastic.

For many families of children with autism, everyday activities like a haircut or dentist visit can pose enormous challenges. The Life Skills Center in the SECU Autism Clinic provides evidence-based programming to help people with autism thrive in our community.

18

In 2017/18, ABC of NC provided services to families from 18 North Carolina counties.

Many children who receive applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy at ABC of NC may be with us for as many 40 hours a week. Through these intensive, often one-on-one sessions, children like Zane work on their coping skills and frustration tolerance. They strengthen their communication skills. They learn how to get along with others. Before ABC of NC, there was nowhere in the area that children could access this concentrated, center-based, autism-specific therapy. Thanks to you, families have a reason to feel optimistic, and children like Zane are right where they need to be — learning, exploring and growing.

helped families hear yes.

Sam’s parents, like many parents of a child with autism, were accustomed to hearing the word no a lot.

NO

Your child can’t attend school here anymore. We can’t accommodate your child’s special needs. Your family is not welcome here.

One no after another was discouraging and disheartening. But, when they found ABC of NC, they finally heard yes.

YES

Your child can be in a classroom with his peers. We can help you thrive at home and in the community. Your child has autism, but we see his value.

Thanks to you, more families than ever before are hearing yes. Yes, to hope. Yes, to a bright future.
