54th Annual Awards

About the Association

Like many great organizations ABCI was started by a group of visionaries who wanted to make a difference in their profession. Initially christened as "Indian Association of Industrial Editors (IAIE)", it was the first organization for professional communicators in India started way back in 1956. IAIE was formed under the Society Act, 1860, of the Charity Commissioner, Mumbai. Mr. Victor Paranjoti, the then Chief Public Relations Officer, ACC, was the Founder President and Mr. P. R. Gupta was the first Vice President of the Association along with Mr. Jerboy Joseph who were the Founder Members of IAIE. The association was rechristened in 1980 to "Association of Business Communicators of India (ABCI)" during the Presidential tenure of Mr. John Monteiro who was working in the Communications Department of L&T. It was at that time ABCI got aligned to the International Association of Business Communicators; hence the name change was inevitable. The Association of Business Communicators of India (ABCI) is the only Association in India recognizing and rewarding excellence in Business Communications. The Annual Awards Nite has been a Gallantry Function in the Corporate Circle in Mumbai, in which ABCI had felicitated many stalwarts from the profession of Communications. With a view to benchmark the Professionalism into Business Communications, ABCI has launched an Accreditation Programme wherein the Senior Communication Professionals, purely on Merit were awarded Fellowship of the Brains Trust. It was for the first time that an Accreditation Programme, for communication fraternity had taken place and ABCI was the one who pioneered it in India. The Association has members list featuring names like Tata Steel, Larsen & Toubro, SAIL, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Glaxo, Pfizer, Aditya Birla Group, Bharat Petroleum, ONGC, Indian Oil, Reserve Bank of India, SBI, Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, IDBI, NABARD, Union Bank, Hindustan Unilever etc. From 2004 ABCI has been headed by Mr. Yogesh Joshi, who is one of the Senior Communication Professionals in India and coincidentally the 25th President of ABCI. Under his Presidential tenure, ABCI has shown unprecedented growth and has become highly active in the Business Communications & P R fraternity across India. This year, ABCI receive 1202 nominations from 32 categories, means, an average of 37 nominations from each category. Also ABCI nominations are non-repetitive in nature, which means you can't file a table calendar in to wall calendar category and vice versa. Interesting to note, that ABCI has received these nominations without a single newspaper advertisement. It is, therefore, commendable to receive so many nominations without any support from any of the Media.

Message from President

Footprints, even in the figurative sense, are always a great way of measuring progress. As President of ABCI, I feel a tinge of pride whenever I look back at our own passage across the years. ABCI has taken great strides in its unique mission. Its journey has been undeniably impressive, whether seen from a holistic perspective or a year-on-year basis. For instance, in calendar year 2013, ABCI received no less than 1202 nominations (as against 1126 in the previous year, i.e. 2012). We had a total of 79 participant organizations, many of them industry leaders. I suppose ABCI is already experiencing “Achche Din”. As we are speaking of numbers, I must point out that ComFest marks another milestone in our Journey. In the past, we had presented stalwarts from the industry through ComFest, the ABCI stage. Dr. J. J. Irani, Director, Tata Sons, Dr. Narendra Jadhav, Member, Planning Commission, Government of India, Mr. Sam Pitroda, Chairman, National Knowledge Commission, Mr. Roger Pereira, The Man who repositioned Singapore on Global Map are to name a few. Members would understand why this year's ComFest is being held 3 months later than usual. The state assembly elections had prompted us to defer the event. The ABCI committee will organise another grand event in the fourth quarter of 2015, when we expect an even greater participation. It will be an event of celebrating the decade of Elite Awards. Happy to state, that it was ABCI, who first introduced Elite Awards for Communication Professionals from India and abroad, covering all streams of Business Communications like Advertising, Business Media, Cartoons and Caricatures, Photography, PR, Radio Broadcast Media and Web Media, thereby trying to bring all facets of Communication Industry under one roof and expanding the association’s horizon. The signs of Economy revival are encouraging Professional Bodies. Corporate India is witnessing a new vitality in the economy. The change in India's leadership has triggered a wave of enthusiasm and optimism. The 'Make-In-India' campaign is expected to open the FDI floodgates. The stock markets seem to be applauding with indices touching record highs. And if market pundits and economists are to be believed, this is just the beginning. However, I expect the role of Communication Professional would be more challenging and excelling to a newer heights in the near future. Join us as we celebrate excellence in corporate communication.

Yogesh Joshi President, ABCI

ComFest

ABCI had organised ComFest on “Statutory goes Strategic on 27th February 2015 at Presidential Ball Room, Hotel Taj President, Mumbai. It was well attended by many PR and Communications Executives from reputed Organisations. Mr. Yogesh Joshi, President, ABCI made the opening remarks and welcome note.

Conclave Theme :

Statutory goes Strategic Boardroom brains in recent times have been abuzz with new ideas. As India Inc. readies itself for its yearly financial assessment, communication professionals are busy reviewing their strategies. The best minds in the business are exploring new ways to project their company's organizational and financial health. Yesterday's ideas are being discarded for a more dynamic statement. That which was just an annual routine, is now an impressive and engaging document, even if matter-of-factly. And all this is happening without breaking any rules! Presenting - the annual report in a new strategic avatar. This statutory document now has the power to inspire and sustain the confidence of all stakeholders and it travels beyond the immediate circle of shareholders. It is no longer a document conveying accounting figures. It now reflects in vivid color and graphics, the aspirations of the organization. Often regarded as a marriage between a balance sheet and a corporate brochure it communicates facts & figures along with a promise and the vision of the organization.

Chief Guest Speech

I am very happy and proud to be here today. The Association of Business Communicators of India has evolved into one of the country's largest and most prestigious communication bodies. This platform of the ABCI Annual Awards has seen so many luminaries of communication, and so many stalwarts that it is truly an honour for me to stand here today. I am happy to be here for another and more personal reason. The driving force behind the rapid rise of ABCI, the change agent who has transformed ABCI and brought into international limelight is a personal friend of mine - and I am sure he is a personal friend of many of you here - Mr. Yogesh Joshi, President of ABCI.

Mr. H. M. Nerurkar I find that many communicators today are not editors of magazines – they are Chairman - TRL Krosaki assemblers of inputs. All that they do is aggregate the inputs they receive from different Refractories Ltd sources. I ask where is the communicator who has his own point of view? If all that you do is collate inputs from your network in Delhi, Kolkatta, and Chennai, I am afraid a software programmecould perhaps do your job more efficiently and at less cost. I expect communicators to draw up a plan to take the management view forward. After all, a true communicator is the conductor of an orchestra. He should be able to weave together inputs from various elements to create his own score. I would urge professional communicators to step out of their comfort zone. Be adventurous, be bold and explore new terrain. Many communicators today do exactly what their predecessors have done. This is of no significance in the historical scheme of things. You need to do more than what has been done before, and for that you need to possess the courage to step out of what you have been doing all along. I am not being disparaging about any of you. I personally know many of you, and I am confident that you are doing a great job. My comments are about the great mass of communicators, and I am specifically addressing the large number of youngsters who are churned out batch after batch by communication colleges. I think the profession needs original thinkers - not re-write artists. So my advice to all of you - do not be content with only designing the vehicles of communication, also think about what cargo those vehicles will carry. I know I have asked for a lot. And you will be well within your rights to turn around and say - well if this is what the CEO expects from a communicator, then here is what the communicator expects from the CEO. I am sure I will not be in position to give an answer! But friends, I know you are professionals of great talent and commitment. If what I have suggested just now, provokes thought and initiates action, I am confident that all of you will be doing a service to the organizations you work for, to yourselves as individuals and most of all, to the noble profession you belong to. God bless you all.
