Initial Proposal

How can design be used to help people preserve physical memories/spaces of loved ones in an ever-expanding digital age?

Initially, I was interested in preserving loved ones heirlooms using AI and 3D rendering. Even though this sounded interesting, I didn’t have the necessary skill set to render it the way I would have liked. This is something I would definitely like to continue to explore in my design work. After researching this idea further, I got to the point where the question “Where should I keep this item now that I have recorded it?” was more compelling to me.

Initial Project Proposal — Pre Class RESEARCHABLE QUESTION

PROJECT STATEMENT ➤

DEGREE PROJECT PROPOSAL Abby Whittingham

PROJECT STATEMENT ➤

I am interested in exploring virtual reality and its connection to preserving memories, specifically physical objects and spaces of loved ones.

How can design be used to help people preserve physical memories/spaces of loved ones in an ever-expanding digital age?

PROJECT STATEMENT ➤

This would be a place where you can upload different keepsakes, momentums, spaces, or photos so you can look back on those memories and reflect on them. Using VR, you can preserve the state of physical objects despite later decay, and use it to connect to family members to remember moments.

I got this idea from my dad randomly sending a picture of my brother and I from when we were younger in our group chat. Archiving mementos to pass down through generations has always taken the form of a memory box or photo album. In today's digital age, this process has changed. Websites and camera rolls exist to archive digital memories, but what about the combination of both physical and digital? What about memories that can't be captured by traditional methods? How do we keep those all in one safe place to pass down?"

PROJECT STATEMENT ➤

You could have the ability to organize memories by location, or make your own moment categories. A random feature could exist to pull up a random memory to encourage reaching out to someone you may not think to yourself. With AI you could search by face or person's name. You can name pictures things you can actually remember so you can find them more easily. “Remember that time we were…”

PROJECT STATEMENT ➤

I am interested in exploring virtual reality and its connection to preserving memories, specifically physical objects and spaces of loved ones.

PROJECT STATEMENT ➤

Being home so much over quarantine really makes you appreciate and want to remember your home to be able to pass down your experience.

For example: ➤

Being able to document your childhood neighborhood using VR and letting your children be able to walk around in it.

Being able to record the state of a physical object in time to virtually preserve the object.

Being able to look around in an old photograph.

Researchable Question

Project Statement

How can design be used to help people tackle the overwhelming feelings they experience when decluttering?

Since the beginning of last year, a lot has changed. When COVID-19 began, the role of going out flipped with the role of staying in. Most of our lives shifted from going out frequently to staying at home for extended periods of time. Those who work in offices no longer went into their well-maintained buildings every day. Instead they went home to work. Being home for extended periods of time when we otherwise wouldn’t be, I found myself noticing the clutter in my home and my negative feelings around it became a lot more apparent. With the fast-paced energy of our culture, it is difficult to maintain our places the way we would prefer. During the hustle of everyday “normal” life, we generally shrug off clutter as it is not as important as other things in our busy lives. However, clutter is unknowingly more negative that you may think.

Our brains like order, and constant visual reminders of disorganization drain our cognitive resources, reducing our ability to focus. The visual distraction of clutter increases cognitive overload and can reduce our working memory.”

Who?

Clutter is heavily linked to negative physical and mental health; however, clearing the clutter is much easier said than done. The busyness of our lives tends to get in the way, making the piles get worse and the tasks even more overwhelming. It’s even more difficult when you are trying to tackle it solo.

The busyness of our lives tends to get in the way, making the piles get worse and the tasks even more overwhelming. It’s even more diffi cult when you are trying to tackle it solo.

I believe there is space for design to help here. Using both my own personal experience with clutter and the interviews/surveys/resources I have collected, I will create an app walkthrough that goes over how to take the first step in the decluttering and reorganizing process. The goal is to motivate and encourage individuals to achieve the home they would like and give resources to declutter/organize.

How can design be used to help people tackle the overwhelming feelings they experience when decluttering? A motivational app to reorganize your space & your mind Abby Whittingham — Senior Degree Project Checkpoint 2

Project Statement

Clutter can affect our anxiety levels, sleep, and ability to focus. In a research paper by Libby Sander her research “shows our physical environments significantly influence our cognition, emotions and subsequent behaviors, including our relationships with others.” “Bursting cupboards and piles of paper stacked around the house may seem harmless enough. Trailer & Poster — 04/13/21

These are the inal background scribbles I went with for my gif posters and parts of my trailer. After many attempts, I found it most helpful to draw them over each other instead of drawing on separate pages. Click here to view the Trailer Click here to view the Gif Poster

Trailer & Poster — 04/13/21 Anxiety, chaos, and disorder were my users main pain points when asked about their feelings with their home. I always discovered that knowing where to start was the largest obstacle. reORG aims to help those who struggle with clutter take the “scribbles” in their lives and even them out into organized lines.

reORG is more than just a decluttering app. It is a community for those who are looking for motivation and resources to get their homes the way they would like. I created a reORG instagram and the #myreorg to invite others to share their reorgs and destigmatize the shameful feelings around having clutter. @reorg_app
