Jennifer Walton: Microcosm Foreward

Versatility and vision are perhaps the best words one can use to describe Jennifer Walton and her art. While most contemporary Canadian artists confine themselves to depicting similar subject matter throughout their careers, becoming experts in conveying specific scenes and themes, Walton is far more transient with her subjects but no less dedicated in her pursuit of perfection. Whether her paintings focus on fire, ice sports, and falling snow (Fire, Water, Ice, and Snow, 2017), on swimmers in deep waters (Swim series 2014-15), or on butterflies, bees, and flowers – as seen in Microcosm – what remains clear is her ability to showcase the beauty in all things she paints. Microcosm is where her unique vision is most evident. The paintings in this exhibition are all extreme close-ups of colourful flowers and the insects they rely on for pollination. Walton’s execution is immaculate, and the amount of detail and time poured into every square inch of each work are signs that we are witnessing an artist with incredible control over her technique and ability. Walton so convincingly replicates nature in her art. Apart from aweinspiring, witnessing these colourful and lively paintings in person can be a bitter-sweet and nostalgic experience, as they reacquaint viewers with a world that seemed so grand and pure during childhood, but one that has been overlooked and forgotten as time passed. -Ryan Monadjem 1
