The African American Male Wellness Agency returned to Kentucky for its eighth Walk of the Year. The 2023 Louisville Walk to Save Black Men’s Lives happened on Saturday, August 26th, at Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center. The city’s second Walk featured more than 1,500 participants and 80 vendors. There were more than 230 individuals who received free health screenings at the Walk. “As we address the social determinants of health and health disparities, it is very important we sponsor events like this that give men the opportunity to see other men.

getting screened and getting their health checked,” said Nicole Yates, asst. vice president of Community Engagement at Molina Healthcare. The event was life-changing for many men. There were 110 men, more than of those screened, who learned they had high blood pressure. “With black men coming out and getting screened, we can expect them to take corrective measures and be around for a lot longer,” said Myra Rock, former Director of the Institute for Health Equity.

Dr. Royce Jones, a therapist at the University of Louisville, decided to attend the Louisville Walk after attending the Columbus Walk and learning critical information about his body. “It gave me a realization about my height, weight, and BMI. I had to make some changes to my habits,” said Dr. Jones. “As a person of influence, I can’t just talk the talk. I have to walk the walk.”

63.2% of Black Men were made aware for the first time they are at high risk for heart attack, stroke, and PAD

5 AFRICAN AMERICAN MALE WELLNESS AGENCY

The African American Male Wellness Agency returned to Detroit for its seventh Walk of the season. The event was held on Saturday, September 16th, at the Aretha Franklin Amphitheater. More than 350 individuals attended the Walk. There were 106 men who received biometric screenings, giving them the information needed to take control of their health. Nearly two-thirds of the men who received a health screening learned they had high blood pressure. Like the rest of the country, Detroit has a problem with health disparities.

According to a recent study by the University of Michigan, almost 20% of African Americans living in Detroit use the Emergency Room as their primary place of care when sick. For white residents, only 2.4% use the Emergency Room as their primary place of care. “People who look like me come up to us not knowing their blood pressure is high, not knowing their diabetic, not knowing diet and exercise are critical things. Today is the busiest day I have had in a while. It’s encouraging to see all these black men getting help,” said a representative from Wayne Health Mobile Unit.

9 AFRICAN AMERICAN MALE WELLNESS AGENCY

The African American Male Wellness Agency hosted its 11th walk of the season in Atlanta on September 23rd. More than 1,000 individuals attended the Walk at the Atlanta University Center. There were 125 men who received biometric screenings, giving them the information needed to take control of their health. The screenings were very impactful, as 68 men learned they had high blood pressure at the walk.

An additional seven men found out they are diabetic. This information will allow them to take control of their health and live longer lives. The racial health gap has been a persistent problem in Atlanta, resulting in a 12-year life expectancy gap in parts of Fulton County. “More than 120 men found out about what’s going on inside of their bodies, and for that we are extremely grateful,” said AAMWA President Kenny Hampton.

13 AFRICAN AMERICAN MALE WELLNESS AGENCY

The African American Male Wellness Agency held its fifth and final walk in Ohio this year in Cincinnati on September 9th. Approximately 500 individuals came to the Bush Community Recreation Center to learn about their bodies and take charge of their health. The event featured honorary chairs who had deep connections to the community, including former Bengals pro-bowler Adam ‘Pacman” Jones, Cincinnati Councilmember Reggie Harris, and internal medicine expert Dr. Keith Melvin.

The Greater Cincinnati area has a long history of health disparities. According to a 2019 report by Hamilton County, African Americans face higher rates of death caused by diabetes, heart disease, and kidney disease than their white counterparts. Men who attended the Walk said there are many benefits to this event. “It was a great time, showing up at the walk, being able to hang out with my fraternity brothers, and get checked out to make sure I am as healthy as I can be,” said Calvin Davis, an attendee of the Cincinnati Walk.
