Armstrong Tennis Notches Dual National Championships !

NCAA Men’s Tennis: No. 1 Armstrong 5, No. 2 West Fla. 0

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 19) - The top-ranked and undefeated Armstrong Atlantic State University men’s tennis team captured its third NCAA Division II Men’s Tennis National Championship with a 5-0 win over No. 2 West Florida on Saturday afternoon at the Top Gun Tennis Academy in Louisville, Ky. The Pirates (30-0) returned to the top of DII men’s tennis after also capturing titles in 2008 and 2009, doing so in dominating fashion on the scoreboard - although the singles play was much tighter than the final score would indicate. West Florida ended its season at 28-3 after winning 19 in a row coming into the Championship match. Armstrong got out to a 3-0 lead after doubles on the Argos, picking up an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles in a showdown of the top-ranked duo of Georgi Rumenov and Mikk Irdoja against the No. 2-ranked duo of Kevin Ducros and Bruno Savi. The Pirates won fairly easily at No. 2 doubles with No. 17-ranked Sven Lalic and Pedro Scocuglia defeating No. 18ranked Leandro Ferreira and Andrey Pozhidaev and then collected an 8-6 win by Eudaldo Bonet and Matus Mydla at No. 3 doubles over Mike Lue and Domenico Sano. In singles play, the Pirates won all six first sets, making it look like it would be an easy 5-0 win, but West Florida battled back in the second sets on all courts. No. 12-ranked Matus Mydla came up with the first point, getting a 6-2, 6-4 win over Leandro Ferreira at No. 4 singles. Topranked Georgi Rumenov then finished off the win, downing No. 7 Kevin Ducros, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1 singles. This is the third time that the Armstrong men and women have both won the NCAA DII National Championship and this is also the first time that both teams have run the table, finishing undefeated for the 2012 season.

NCAA Women’s Tennis: No. 3 Armstrong 5, No. 1 BYU-Hawai’i 2

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 19) - Armstrong Atlantic State University senior Kathleen Henry captured a second-set tiebreaker to lift the No. 3-ranked Pirates to their seventh NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis National Championship in a 5-2 win over top-ranked BYU-Hawai’i on Saturday morning at the Top Gun Tennis Academy in Louisville, Ky. The Pirates completed an undefeated season, going 29-0 in winning their fourth NCAA DII Women’s Tennis title in the last five seasons. BYU-Hawai’i - gunning for its eighth title - suffered their first loss of the season and fell to 29-1. The two teams now are tied for the most DII women’s tennis titles in NCAA history with seven. BYU-Hawai’i got out to a very quick doubles lead and took No. 1 doubles behind the top-ranked doubles duo of Annie Hwang and Sherry Liu, 8-1, over second-ranked Barbora Krtickova and Aleksandra Filipovski. The Pirates got their first doubles point at No. 3 doubles as No. 17-ranked Kathleen Henry and Clara Perez notched an 8-5 win over Marika Kobayashi and Tanja Rebholz, then the No. 11-ranked duo of Marlen Hacke and Olga Kalodzitsa converted a late break to come up with an 8-5 win over No. 5-ranked Yuan Jia and Marietta Tuionetoa at No. 2 doubles and give Armstrong the crucial 2-1 lead heading into singles play. Armstrong got off to a fantastic start in singles play, winning five of six first sets in the singles matches. No. 30-ranked Clara Perez picked up the first point in singles with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Marietta Tuionetoa at No. 6 singles, then No. 21-ranked Marlen Hacke notched a 6-1, 7-6 (4) win at No. 5 singles put the Pirates just one match away from the title. BYU-Hawai’i did not go down quietly. Top-ranked Hwang prevailed in a Top 10 battle at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 win over No. 6-ranked Barbora Krtickova, and the Seasiders rallied for a second set win at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. That’s when Henry, down 5-3 at one point in the second set, battled back with a break to force a tiebreaker. Henry raced out to a 4-0 lead in the tiebreak, then watched a shot go wide on match point from BYUHawai’i’s Tanja Rebholz for a 7-2 victory in the tiebreaker and the national title for the Pirates.

The Pirates flew into Savannah/Hilton Head International airport from Louisville on Sunday, May 20th, and were greeted by members of the Armstrong and Savannah community, as well as the local media. Armstrong senior Kathleen Henry brought the women’s trophy down the terminal to the waiting crowd in the reception area, while Armstrong senior Mikk Irdoja did the honors with the men’s trophy. The national championship is the seventh for the Armstrong women’s program, tying for the most in DII history, while the men’s title is the third, tying them for fifth-most in DII history.

On January 19th, the Pirates hosted Montevallo and got 19 second-half points from senior Chris Vanlandingham to lead Armstrong to a 79-75 win over the Falcons. Vanlandingham would become the 18th 1,000-point scorer in Armstrong men’s basketball history in the contest and Montevallo would go on to play in the NCAA DII National Championship game, falling to Western Washington in the final. Vanlandingham finished his four-year career with 1,175 points, ranking 11th all-time in Armstrong basketball history while also earning All-PBC honors for a second straight year. Senior Keyshore Williams finished his Armstrong career with 91 blocked shots, seventh-best in school history, while senior Grant Domsic nailed 118 career three-pointers, also seventh-best. Seniors Mychal Horn and DeVon Jones also finished their Armstrong careers. The Pirates return four players, including senior Aric Miller (13.6 ppg) for the 2012-13 season.

The Armstrong Atlantic State women’s basketball squad finished the 2011-12 season with a 13-13 overall record and a 7-11 record in Peach Belt Conference play. The Lady Pirates opened the season with four straight wins, including going an unbeaten 2-0 at the Wingate by Wyndham Pirate Classic, notching wins over Young Harris - on sophomore Mauri Wells’ basket with 1.2 seconds left - and Anderson (SC). The start was the best for Armstrong since 2002-03. Armstrong continued the hot streak into the Christmas break, knocking off Edward Waters and Flagler to finish the fall 7-4. In the spring, the Pirates notched an early league win at Augusta State, then shot a season-high 53 percent from the field in beating Georgia Southwestern, 80-73, in Americus. Armstrong then erased a 12-point second-half deficit to knock off Montevallo, 58-56, while also picking road wins at North Georgia and Flagler. Sophomore Mauri Wells followed up on her debut season by leading the Peach Belt Conference and ranking fourth in NCAA Division II in rebounding, averaging 13.0 boards per game. She also ranked 11th in the league in scoring at 12.2 points per game and finished sixth in the nation in doubledoubles with 17, earning All-Conference honors. Juniors Demisha Mills (11.0 ppg) and D.D. Gipson (9.6 ppg, .495 FG%) each had an impact in their first seasons with the Pirates after transferring in, while the Pirates also got solid contributions from Angel Hill (1.50 assist/TO ratio), Karolina Rykowska and freshman point guard Dee Hayward. Armstrong had no seniors in 2011-12 and returns nine players for 2012-13.

The Armstrong Atlantic State baseball squad became only the third school in Peach Belt Conference history to win both the regular season and tournament title in the same year in 2012, going 41-16 overall with a 20-10 mark in the league, a second PBC Tournament title and the 13th NCAA Tournament appearance in the last 23 seasons. The Pirates used an explosive offense to get off to a 20-6 start to the season, setting a new school record by scoring six or more runs in their first 26 games. Armstrong then reeled off a 14game winning streak midway through the season that included a school-best 11-game conference win streak. ON the final weekend of the season, an 8-7 win at Georgia College clinched the regular season title outright, the fourth regular season league title in school history. In the PBC Tournament, the Pirates relied on pitching and defense to collect the crown as Armstrong pitchers notched a 2.86 team ERA and PBC Tournament MVP Chess Malone hurled four innings of three-hit shutout ball with the Pirates scoring twice in the top of the ninth inning for a 3-1 win over Lander in the tournament championship game. Junior Zach Taylor led the Peach Belt in home runs and RBI while ranking seventh in the league in hitting to earn PBC Player of the Year honors as well as first-team ABCA All-American honors. Sophomore Ethan Bader led the PBC in wins, going 12-4 with a 3.37 ERA and a leaguehigh 119 strikeouts, while senior pitcher Chandler Hall and senior shortstop Alex Frederick each earned ABCA National Gold Glove honors at pitcher and shortstop, respectively. A stellar senior class of seven players, including catcher John Roberts (4th all-time in hits, 3rd all-time in RBIs), third baseman Drew Walker and pitchers Eric Fowler, Scott Strickland and Travis Morris joined Hall and Frederick in helping the Pirates to a memorable campaign in 2012, finishing the year ranked No. 12 in the nation. The Pirates return 13 players from the 2012 squad for the 2013 season.

The Armstrong Atlantic State University softball team blazed its way to a Peach Belt Conference regular season title and a 10th NCAA Championships appearance in the last 12 seasons after a stellar 45-11 campaign that included a school-record 19-1 league mark. The Pirates opened up the season with a solid 17-2 record in February and kept the momentum going into March. A key league DH split with North Georgia on March 15 would turn out to be the only blemish on Armstrong’s league record as the Pirates clinched the regular season title with a come-from-behind 7-6 win at Francis Marion on April 17th. The league title is the first outright title for Armstrong softball as the Pirates had tied for the regular season crown in 2000. Armstrong’s stellar season gave the Pirates the opportunity to host an NCAA Championships regional for the first time in school history as well. The Pirates knocked off Catawba, 1-0, on freshman Caitlin Campbell’s six-hit shutout but were eliminated by Lenoir-Rhyne later that day. A key to the Pirates’ success all year long was the outstanding play of Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year April Jowers, who set a school and Peach Belt Conference record by batting .565 on the season. Jowers kept up an assault on the single-season DII hitting record all year long, registering a 30-game hitting streak to start the season and had at least one hit in 53 of 56 games this year, including 37 multi-hit games. She finished her four-year collegiate career as the all-time hits leader in Peach Belt history as well as Armstrong’s all-time hits, batting and stolen base leader. The Pirates placed six players on the All-PBC First Team, including PBC Pitcher of the Year Megan Barnwell (21-5, 2.15 ERA) and four seniors - first baseman Whitney Galloway, third baseman Baillie Temples, Jowers and designated player Heather Walker. Sophomore outfielder Shelby Duff earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors while Jowers earned consensus first-team AllAmerica honors by CoSIDA/Daktronics and the NFCA. Armstrong returns nine players for the 2013 season.

The Armstrong Atlantic State University men’s tennis team completed a phenomenal season, culminating with a perfect 30-0 record and the school’s third NCAA Division II National Championship after a 5-0 win over No. 2-ranked West Florida in the title match in Louisville. The Pirates did not give up more than two points in any match this season, streaking through the Peach Belt Conference en route to the program’s eighth regular season title as well as an eighth straight PBC Tournament title in April. Armstrong knocked off Wingate and Georgia College in the NCAA South Regional, then headed to the NCAA DII Spring Sports Festival as the favorites to capture the crown. The Pirates gave up only one game during the four matches in Louisville, notching the Pirates’ third NCAA National Championship in the last five seasons. The Pirates’ singles lineup during 2012 featured three players who, at one time or another, were ranked No. 1 in the nation with seniors Mikk Irdoja and Eudaldo Bonet finishing the 2010 and 2011 seasons, respectively, while newcomer Georgi Rumenov quickly ascended to the top of the 2012 rankings. Rumenov finished the 2012 season as the top-ranked singles player in Division II and teamed with Irdoja to make up the top-ranked doubles duo in the country. Rumenov also added PBC Player of the Year honors to his accolades in 2012 while also being named the ITA’s National Player to Watch. Freshman Sven Lalic earned PBC Freshman of the Year honors as well as ITA National Rookie of the Year honors. Irdoja and Bonet each capped their four-year careers with the Pirates with bookend national titles as each earned crowns in 2009. The pair earned ITA All-America honors in singles in 2012, giving each four straight years of ITA All-America honors. Women’s Golf

The Armstrong Atlantic State University women’s golf team enjoyed its finest season in program history, earning its first team tournament title during the regular season, then capturing its first Peach Belt Conference title while qualifying its first player for the NCAA Championships. The Pirates opened the spring portion of the 2011-12 season with sophomore Kristen Sammarco capturing the Tusculum/Kiawah Invitational on Feb. 4-5 for Armstrong’s first individual tournament win since Danielle Davis in 2005-06. The next week, Armstrong went wire-to-wire in capturing the Newberry Invitational by 22 strokes at Moss Creek Country Club in Hilton Head, S.C., as sophomore Jenna Birch made it two straight individual wins with medallist honors. Junior Kelly Pearce notched an individual win at the Dana Rader Intercollegiate for the third different Armstrong golfer to capture a win in the spring. At the PBC Championships in Pine Mountain, Ga., Sammarco shot a PBC-record first-round 65 to put Armstrong in contention for its first league crown. The Pirates fired a final-round 311 to win the league crown by 11 strokes. Sammarco closed out individual medallist honors with a second-round 79. Without an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, the Pirates were forced to wait for a possible invite to the NCAAs. Despite the team not advancing, sophomore Jenna Birch did receive an individual invite, traveling to Pensacola for the NCAA South Super Regional. Competing to advance to the NCAAs as an individual, Birch chipped in on the first playoff hole to earn a trip to the DII Spring Sports Festival in Louisville. The sophomore finished 21st at the NCAA National Championships with a four-day 319 score, 31-over-par. As a result, Birch earned honorable mention All-America honors from the NGCA, becoming the first All-American in women’s golf for the Pirates. Seniors Kim Knox and Victoria Bennett each finished their four-year careers for the Pirates in 201112, and the Pirates return four players for 2012-13.
