VEGETABLE DYE A Little Story … As a child, I would play “Hide & Seek” in my father’s textile mill. One of my favorite hiding spots was ducking under a large pile of colorful dyed yarn. Waiting to be found, I would get lost in the richness of the various colors of hand-dyed yarn. As I grew older, these colors stayed with me. They are now a major part of wild me & the inspiration behind Shilpa Rathi. The picture at the bottom right is from a recent trip back to my father’s factory where I spent some time trying to unravel a knot in a gorgeous batch of freshly vegetable-dyed yarn.

Why Use Vegetable Dyes Over Chemical Dyes? On average, we spend 8 hours per day in direct contact with our bed-sheets, pillows & quilts. Natural fabrics & vegetable dyes eliminate any risk of chemicals affecting our skin & allow our precious skin to breathe better & feel better. The true beauty of vegetable dyed fabrics is that their richness matures with age. The colors do fade over time, but this only makes the fabrics more & more beautiful. Pictures on this page show some of the natural materials such as Indigo cake from Indigo plant and others used to create astonishing colors for Shilpa Rathi’s unique products.

WOODEN HAND-CARVED BLOCK CARVED WOODEN BLOCK Hand block printing dates back many centuries in India & is currently a dying art due to mass production through machine printing. Preserving this dying art means empowering skilled artisans to create unparalleled workmanship while supporting their families & encouraging growth of the local economy. The pictures on this page show a quick glimpse of the world of hand block printing at Shilpa Rathi. The desired pattern is hand carved onto a teak wood block, known as “Bunta.” Then the block is dipped into a color tray & hand-pressed onto prewashed, sundried fabric to create the pattern design. Our smooth, soft products are a result of vigorous washing, sun-drying processes and of course… the love & care we share! Shilpa Rathi supports Fair Trade & strives to protect this unique and beautiful art. We are proud to offer the highest quality, eco-friendly products at reasonable prices.
