In the period of two academic years, 2010-2011 and 2011-2012, ASHICO awarded 10 scholarships per year for ISE’s excellent students. Recently, in February 2014, the company decided to recruit three students from GMA01 class to have internship at ASHICO. It’s a good opportunity for ISE’s student to experience directly in a professional, friendly and cooperative working environment. Acknowledging the importance of high-qualified personnel, we believed that ASHICO would enable ISE’s students to have chance working there.

trategic alliance is mentioned as a co-alignment between two or more firms where the partners hope to learn and acquire from each other the technologies, products, skills and knowledge that are not available to their competitors.4

A symbolic example of this strategic alliance is that CMA CGM, Maersk Line and MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company SA have agreed to establish a long-term operational alliance on East – West trades, called the P3 Network with the aim to improve and optimize operations and service offerings. Strategic alliances are formed to The P3 Network will operate a capacity of generate benefits 2.6 million that would not be TEU (initially easily attained 255 vessels on independently. 29 loops) on Moreover, it is three trade considered as an lanes: Asia – effective method Europe, for companies to Trans-Pacific pursue common and Transgoals, share risks Le Thi Lien, Do Hoang Yen, Atlantic. and rewards, Tran Thi Tu Anh GMA01 acquire and share Influence and information and experience, or attempt to Consequence of Strategic Alliance On expand their market. period of the world crisis by themselves when the volume of trade is decreasing. It can be said that these companies reduce the cost for searching transportation of goods due to the widen network created by alliances. In addition, operational management also strengthens as members cooperate to each other to deal with cargo transportation and terminal handling. For example, Kaohsiung

4

You should know terminal forms an integral part of OOCL's international containerized transportation business and is solely called at by the OOCL's vessels or by OOCL's alliance partners6. As a result, profit of each firm increases rapidly. Secondly, strategic alliance seems to reduce the competition amongst individual firms but escalate severe competition between alliances. It is obvious that all companies in the liner shipping industry want to compete with the giant called Maersk Line, who has not completely entered any strategic alliance. In fact, individually confronting this Danish firm is proved too difficult. However, it would be possible since strategic alliance was formed. In this circumstance, small and medium container shipping companies would face more and more difficulties. In terms of service quality, it is for sure that these alliances provide better and more reliable service than local and small firms. The members themselves are the big companies in this field, and now they co-operate to supply superior transportation as well as logistic solution to the customers. Therefore, these alliances will occupy a great part of market share and make it increasingly difficult for small ones to gain their own. The price of their service would also be very competitive because they can save cost and have logical system of service all around the world. In 2011, Grand Alliance and New World Alliance formed G6, which operated 90 ships with capacities up to 14000 TEU covering 40 ports. The alliance also launched six services between Asia and North Europe7. On customers When each partner in the alliance shares a common pool of equipment, knowledge, etc, they consequently upgrade their facilities and homogenize the capacities amongst members.

The competition within an alliance, therefore also based on value contributed by each firm that is what makes one firm prominent and different from others. The market has now became a place for the ones who are more professional, have more featured abilities. Due to the competition between shipping enterprises, customers, who are using transportation service, also get certain benefit. With strategic alliances, customers now are enjoying more diverse and professional services, especially in vertical alliances, where logical systems and integrated services are offered by firms along the vertical chains. Furthermore, the competition among alliances also makes the freight become more competitive, which favors customers. Nevertheless, as mentioned, the strategic alliance enhances the bargaining power of shippers toward customers and suppliers, and therefore, making customers less influential in the bargaining process. Instead of making deals with a single partner, it is as if the customers are making agreements with all member of an alliance, in which dumping is strictly prohibited. Obviously, customers’ power becomes inferior unless they are forming their own strategic alliances. Conclusion In an increasingly competitive global market, forming alliances is an indispensable strategy for any shipping company. On one hand, strategic alliances enable each partner to distribute more expedient services and values for the whole society; on the other hand, they create a market that is difficult for small or inferior firms to stand and rival. One way or another, fierce and fair methods of competition promote each enterprise to become more creative and distributive. It pushes the world towards continuous development, not only in transportation business but in strenuous social activities also.

WHEN I WAS A VIETNAM PARTICIPATING YOUTH Vu Phuong Thao, GMA0401

S

ome people live their lives peacefully and stably until the end, and they are happy and satisfied with that. For others, they would prefer to challenge themselves with adventures and difficulties which they think may make their lives much more memorable and interesting. Although not being an adventurous guy, I luckily got an unforgettable journey - a milestone of my life. It came in the form of the Ship for South East Asian Youth Programme (SSEAYP)

What is SSEAYP? ^o^ SSEAYP is a program specially designed for JASEAN youth and was pioneered by the ASEAN countries and Japan in 1974. After participating in ASEAN in 1995, Vietnam youth could officially join SSEAYP since 1996. SSEAYP is run annually, having more than 300 J-ASEAN youngsters, ages 18 to 30, and taking part in. All national groups are called “Contingents”, and all members are Participating Youths (PYs). Each contingent has a National Leader (NL) who is in charge of mentoring all activities of the group, but participates as a PY. Apart from Japan with about 39 PYs and a NL, each contingent has a NL and 28 PYs, usually 14 males and 14 females.

The program often lasts within 50 – 60 days, starting with an around 10-day local program in Japan in late October. For 51 days of SSEAYP 2013, after finishing the homestay in Japan, we got on a ship named Nippon Maru and set for sail to Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines respectively. Certainly, we also had local programs in these countries before moving back to Japan and taking flight back to our motherland.

What did I do as a PY? =^.^= After being selected by the Hochiminh Youth Union, we gathered and started preparing for our journey. First of all, we looked for sponsorships whose money was used for our uniforms, profile books, name cards and stuffs for national exhibition and activities on board. Then, it was time for us to design the contingent uniform, practice flag hoisting and performances for the national presentation, set up demo of the exhibition, and finalize frameworks of other main activities on board such as Discussion, Solidarity Group Activities, or Club Activities. For the country program, it consists of:

eing a place in which English becomes very popular, International School of Education brings about plenty of opportunities to approach an International Environment to all of its students. We have oversea Professors who come here to teach us, we have International students to study with, and we have Maritime students from the US, Korea, etc., visit us every year, we also have many exchange programs which provide us chances to go abroad for study tours or internships. And if we are lucky, we even are sponsored to attend Maritime conferences and visit other Maritime institutions abroad. I would say I am one of the lucky persons who had a chance to take part in an Expanded ASEAN Seafarers Training Workshop – Counter Piracy and to visit one of the biggest Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific, thanks to Maritime Piracy Humanitarian Response Program (MPHRP) and TK foundation who funded us and Ms. Donna Nincic who invited us. Our journey lasted for a week, from Sept 2230 2013, with our Prof. Nguyen Thanh Thuy and four ISE students including me. We spent the first three days in Manila attending the conference of Expanded ASEAN Seafarers Training Workshop – Counter Piracy (EASTCP). This conference was joined by the Philippines Vice President, the representatives from more than 50 countries and territories in the region of Asia and the Pacific as well as

from International Maritime Organization, MPHRP, International Maritime Bureau, and other Maritime Institutions. In addition, the conference also included 29 Cadets (Deck and Engineer Maritime students) from 6 countries in the ASEAN (The Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, India, Indonesia) and the US. The workshop produced the recommendations for implementation in order to improve the training and support of seafarers against piracy. The cadets also contributed to the conference with 3 presentations from Vietnam, India and the US. The rest of our trip was spent in the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP). MAAP’s campus was located in several beautiful hills. Interestingly, I even saw jungle while traveling by bus to visit buildings inside it. MAAP Cadets impressed me with their attitude, spirit and a high sense of discipline that there was distinctive rank between upper and underclass. MAAP was a Military School that students do not stay in Dorms but Barracks and a week spent with them was not enough to see their 13 different sets of uniforms. However, it was adequate for them to show us their state-ofthe-art training facilities. We took part in Counter Piracy training with the Full-mission Bridge Simulator on Motion Platform, the Helicopter Underwater Exiting Training (HUET) and Free Fall Lifeboat Training, Intergrated Bridge system, Machine shops, etc. Those were both frightening and exciting.

What about you? What is your favorite international experience with ISE? Please share with us so we can create a colorful timeline of ISE student activities.

INTERVIEW WITH FOREIGN STUDENTS IN ISE Dong Thu Trang, GMA01

W

ith the exchange programs between VIMARU and foreign education institutions, our university has become a reliable destination for many international students. Therefore, the presence of the students with different nationalities and skin colors in the classrooms has become more familiar with most of us. It was lucky for me to have an open conversation with some of them: Prince Will from Nigeria, and Gil from Mozambique. Jane: Hi guys, so glad to see you two. Let’s start with a short introduction about yourselves. Gil: Well, as you can see, I am not very tall (smile). I am always aware of training myself by doing exercises or playing sports, like my mother said that “When you lay back and rest, things have changed so fast”. Prince: Yes, African men are strong and great at sports. Gil can jog for 2 hours unceasingly around the campus. Actually, I am into many sports, such as basketball, volleyball, badminton, ping-pong. My favorite’s football team is Spain. I think it is better if we can play for the same team so that we can support each other.

Prince: I also have little knowledge about Vietnam before coming here. Actually, my mother has been working for the embassy and I followed her decisions. Jane: I can see that you are quite sociable and friendly. So have you faced any difficulty in adapting to the life in Vietnam? Gil: At first, there have always been differences in food between two countries. I had some trouble with the completely new cuisine of Vietnam. But now, I am starting to enjoy it, especially “Phởxào” and “Búnchả”. And, I extremely like to have steamed rice for dinner every day. However, I still have some problems communicating with Vietnamese. They sometimes cannot get what I said, so Prince had to translate my words for them. He also help me to improve my English and that’s great because, you know, he (Prince) was born in. (You cannot be born in a language. So: “England”? “an English environment”? “Nigeria”?) Prince: People can understand me fairly well so actually I have no problem, only a little difficulty in traffic, but not very much. Jane: So what is your impression about the living conditions here?

Jane: Yeah, I see. ISE does have excellent football movement. So, I wonder what made you Gil: Vietnamese people are so nice. If I walk on choose VIMARU for your study? the street, people greet me and ask me if I can speak Vietnamese. Vietnamese men are interested in sports. That is the reason why I like them very much. Jane: It is obvious that there are many new and interesting things waiting you to discover, but have you ever felt homesick?

Jane: Indeed, most of us do. What about speaking English with ISE friends? Prince: I found that most of you only speak Vietnamese in classes. If you can take advantage of time in class to practice English, you will improve very fast. Furthermore, if people are forced to speak English all the time in class by using punishment in form of lowering their scores, perhaps in time it will become a natural reaction. They should mostly speak with people who are fluent in English to make them better. Gil: I think you have a lot of vocabulary and grammar in your mind. All you need is practicing more. You seem to love your culture and language too much that make it’s difficult to study a new language. Your writing is good but you need to talk more often.

Gil: Not really. I am quite easy to make friend. We have been together, hanging around. In last Lunar New Year festival, a friend invited me to join a trip to his home in the countryside. He told me some stories about Vietnamese history and cooked for me. I want to have more friends. They make me feel like I am home. Prince: Not at all. Sometimes, I go to Hanoi to visit my mom, my younger brother and sister, especially in holidays. She is quite busy and we Jane: Thank you.
