Nelson ’s Dockyard

A visit to the island would be incomplete without seeing Nelson’s Dockyard, the restored Georgian Naval Dockyard that forms part of Antigua and Barbuda’s UNESCO World Heritage Site,

The yard was originally named, after famous English Admiral Horatio Nelson, the dockyard was originally called “His Majesty’s Antigua Naval Yard”, it only became known as Nelson’s Dockyard after a major restoration project. This was completed. The National Parks Authority continues to use traditional means and methods in the stabilizing and historical preservation of the site.

Nelson’s Dockyard in English Harbour is today one of the most prominent visitor attractions for Antigua and Barbuda. It incorporates a splendid yacht marina, home of the prestigious Antigua Sailing Week, and is the only remaining working Georgian Dockyard in the world. Many of the interesting historical buildings, housing restaurants, a bakery, gift shops and offices are open to the public.

There is a 15-minute tour of the Dockyard offered that gives an insightful and entertaining account of the Dockyard’s history.
