The Alabama A&M University (AAMU) Alumni Hall of Fame was founded in 1989 and initiated by Mrs. Georgia S. Valrie, former Director of Alumni Affairs. It was established with a threefold purpose: (1) to honor outstanding alumni who have excelled in their chosen professions, (2) to showcase the achievements of AAMU alumni to the community, and (3) to consummate the effectiveness of AAMU as a Historically Black College and/or University (HBCU). The Hall of Fame was organized with eight categories: Arts/Entertainment, Athletics, Business/ Industry, Community Service/Religion, Education, Government/Law, Medicine and Science. Upon the establishment of the AAMU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991, athletics was deleted from the Alumni Hall of Fame category. The induction ceremony of the Alumni Hall of Fame is held every five years in conjunction with the Grand Reunion Celebration. The first ceremony was held May 4, 1990, in the North Hall, Von Braun Civic Center, Huntsville, AL.

Mr. Andrew Fuller Community Service Honoree

M

r. Andrew James Fuller is a retired educator, administrator, business owner, civic stalwart, Army veteran, and more. His parents, James Tas and Bessie Harris Fuller, welcomed his birth on August 01, 1944. Few people are more proud to be a Thomasville, Alabama native than Andrew Fuller. Thomasville, Alabama, is where he received both his elementary and secondary education. Though a tour in the U.S. Army required a break in his studies at Alabama A&M College during the 1960s, Andrew returned to The Hill and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Trade and Industrial Education. He later earned the Master of Science degree from his beloved AAMU as well. While he certainly credits AAMU for having prepared him professionally, it is at AAMU where he met and married Dorothy Thompson, a former Miss A&M and his wife of 50+ years. Andrew worked in the Huntsville City Schools for more than thirty years. He served over seventy percent (22 years) of that time as The Chief Instructor of Brick Masonry at the Huntsville Center for Technology. His love for young people and teaching resulted in his serving as Assistant Principal and later as Principal of Lee High School in Huntsville, Alabama. His civic involvement is widespread and includes serving as a Primary Advisor to the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America; Chairman of the Membership Committee of the Alabama Vocational Association, and three terms as President of the Brick Masonry Instructors’ Association of Alabama. In 2015, he was inducted into the National Brick Masonry’s Hall of Fame. He received this award in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, during the annual conference. Andrew’s professional memberships include the Huntsville/ Madison County Education Association, Alabama Education Association, Iota Lambda Sigma-Epsilon Vocational Fraternity, and the Alabama A&M University Alumni Association. His Masonic journey began in Thomasville, Alabama, in 1962. Today, Andrew is among the select group of 33° Masons. He was elevated to the Honorary Thirty Third Degree (Grand Inspector General) of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Freemasonry in October 1980, in Orlando, Florida. His masonic growth alone reads like a Who’s Who among the most accomplished individuals nationally. In Huntsville, Andrew was elected as Worshipful Master of the Evening Star Lodge Number 6, appointed Grand District Deputy for Masonic District 17. The latter required operational and

organizational oversight of all Masonic Lodges in North Alabama. Other notable masonic achievements include service as Commander in Chief of the Tennessee Valley Consistory Number 160, the First Illustrious Potentate of Al Azhar Shrine Temple Number 195 (Huntsville) and Past Deputy of the Oasis of Huntsville, Desert of Alabama, Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine of North and South America and Jurisdictions, Incorporated. In October 2018, while in Memphis, Tennessee, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Prince Hall Scottish Rite Freemasonry, Andrew was coroneted a Sovereign Grand Inspector General and designated an Active Emeritus Member of the United Supreme Council, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Prince Hall Affiliation, Southern Jurisdiction, United States of America. He also inspired scholarship donations to AAMU from the Masons that, to date, total more than $25,000. His commitment to AAMU’s mission is profoundly evident through his many in-kind masonry projects over the years and his more recent service to AAMU First Lady Abbiegail Hugine’s Bulldog Pride Committee, where he served as Chaplain for ten years. Andrew’s professional and in-kind masonry work can be seen throughout the campus, from the rock walls near Bibb Graves and the Student Center to the football practice area, the baseball dugout, and the Alumni Wall of Giving at the Alumni Center. His In-Kind projects have amassed an estimated value of $85,000 throughout the past 40 years. Whether on the phone soliciting AAMU Brick Paver orders or working on a campus clean-up campaign, Andrew James Fuller was likely on the scene enhancing the AAMU Bulldog Pride! Andrew was also instrumental in establishing the Annual Wreath Laying Ceremony that now honors Dr. William Hooper Councill, also a Prince Hall Mason. Andrew James Fuller is a Deacon at Church Street Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America and a soloist in the Male Chorus. His son Andy and daughter-in-law Cynarra, three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren inspire Andrew to continue making a difference in his community and his beloved AAMU. Asineade Joli, his youngest grandchild, is a proud and current AAMU junior. As God would have it, he is a living example to many.

Mr. Freeman Holifield, Sr. Government/Law Honoree

B

orn in Helena, Alabama, in 1941, Mr. Freeman Holifield, Sr. is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Fred B. Holifield, Sr. He spent his formative years in Bessemer, Alabama, surrounded by a loving family. In August 1959, after graduating from Dunbar High School (in Bessemer, Alabama), he joined the United States Army and proudly served as an Administrative Specialist. He also toured at Fort Jackson, South Carolina; Fort Bliss, Texas; Korea Military Advisory Group (KMAG) Tague, Korea; Hartford/Bridgeport Air Defense Command, Connecticut and Fort Hamilton, New York. Upon receiving his Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Army in 1962, he continued his education at Alabama A&M University from 1962 to 1966, obtaining his Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education. In 1972, he completed his master’s in Education Administration and Supervision. His career as a policeman occurred as a fate of happenstance. The late Carl Bailey, who was a classmate of his and the late John Staten, discussed the idea of desegregating the Huntsville Police Department, which led to the hiring of the late Carl Bailey, the late Charles Huggins, the late John Christmas, the late John Staten, and Freeman Holifield in December 1963 and 1964. Later, Officer Holifield was promoted to the position of Traffic Officer in the elite Traffic Division (a first), and a few months later, he became the first Black Motorcycle Officer. One of his proudest memories as a member of the Huntsville Police Department was to be a policeman on the passing of the 1965 Civil Rights Act. He witnessed blacks and whites celebrating this historical day by visiting local restaurants and clubs, which confused white officers accustomed to enforcing segregation laws. Officers were instructed to stop enforcing segregation and abide by the new Civil Rights Act Bill. After leaving the Huntsville Police Department in 1966, Mr. Holifield began a new career with the United States Ordnance Missile & Munitions Center and School (USAOMMCS) at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama Electronics Instructor. During his thirty-three years of employment with the government, Mr. Holifield held numerous positions at USAOMMCS and the U.S. Army in the Republic of Germany (2 tours); Training Instructor (Electronics) USAOMMCS; Education Services Officer, Rothwesten, Germany; Post Director of Education, Giessen, Germany; Post Director of Education, U.S. Army Military Community Kaiserslautern, Germany; Senior Evaluator at USAOMMCS; Director of Education, managing three education centers and a sub-center, U.S. Army Military Community, Darmstadt Germany; Chief of Internal Evaluation Division, USAOMMCS; Acting Director, Directorate of Evaluation and Standardization, USAOMMCS; and Chief of Staff and Faculty Development Division, USAOMMCS. During his employment with the Army, Mr. Holifield was

promoted as the first African American supervisor (GM-13) to the Chief of Internal Evaluation Division in the history of USAOMMS. He mentored and trained a cadre of talent under his leadership, from military ranks and civilian employees. Mr. Holifield retired as Chief of Staff and Faculty Development Division on September 30, 1998, which also was the first African American to hold this position. Upon retirement, he was presented with the title of Supervisory Education/ Instructional Systems Specialist (Emeritus). Mr. Holifield has been affiliated with numerous organizations overseas and in the United States throughout his career, where he has been recognized for his job-related activities and volunteer work in the communities in which he lived. For fourteen years, Mr. Holifield and the late Charles Winslow were the Host and Co-Host of Talkfest Television Show on WAFF TV Channel 48 NBC Affiliate. Talkfest promoted community events, discussed the nature of politics from a local, state, and federal point of view, and presented a multitude of exciting guests with well-rounded opinions on the current topics of the day. He is a Golden Life Member of the Alabama A&M University Alumni Association, Past President of AAMU Alumni Association, Life Member of Ancient Egyptian Arabic Nobles of Mystic Shrine (AEANOMS), Honorary Past Imperial Potentate, Past Imperial Deputy of Desert Alabama, Past Imperial Deputy of Oasis Huntsville, Past Potentate Al Azhar Temple 195, Past President J.E. Harris 33rd Club, Past President of Deep South Shriners of AL, MS, FL, TN, OK, TX, AK, MO, SC, LA and Korea, a member of Tennessee Valley Consistory #160, a member of the Prince Hall Affiliated Free and Accepted Masons of Evening Star Lodge #6, Past Basileus 3-times and Life member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., a member Alabama A&M University Hall of Fame Football, President of Alabama A&M University, Athletic Community Resource Group, and Vice Chairman Solid Waste Board Authority in Huntsville, Alabama. He is also the recipient of the Presidential Citation, representing the National Association for Equal Opportunity In Higher Education. Freeman Holifield, Sr., was married to the late Janie Adams Holifield of Sheffield, Alabama, for 56 years, until her death in April of 2021. They were blessed with two children, Dr. Quintaniay Holifield and Col. Freeman Holifield, Jr. USAF, in addition to a loving daughter-in-law, Lorrie L. Holifield, and a grandson, Freeman Holifield, III.

University Hymn

Words by Dr. Joseph F. Drake Arranged by Dr. Henry Bradford, Jr.

Alabama A&M Rich in heritage divine Bless’d by the life of Councill brave Who gave his all that thou might’st shine. Many thy brave and loyal sons Sent from thy shrine on Normal’s Hill Filled with a zeal from tasks well done Anxious thy mandates to fulfill. Long may you live to bless the world For right and justice take a stand As from your rocky heights you view Your children’s work throughout the land. Chorus Alma Mater, blest be thy name. Long live thy fame; long live thy fame!
