A Little Poem On History- Arpita Hey little passer by Would you care for a little story? Of myths and tales and kingdoms Gone of legends and of glories? I often wonder what men were like In the by gone ages Were they caring and wise Or just illusionary sages? Were we brilliant and just? And carried an honest attire Or were we broke and thrown to dust and A preposterous liar? Did we have in our hearts? Love for one another Or did we tear apart our worlds and Disrespected our mothers? Did we flourish for our deeds? Saddled on horses of kindness Or did we put our roots to rot and Wore the crown of blindness? Sometimes I ask my grandma Why did the Sun God abandon his son? I see her smile get a little smaller 'He loved more of his reputation'

I ask her again if that is why Draped was given away Not to one but 5 unknown, Brothers not made of clay? Did Kunti not think twice or even once? What crime she was ordering Or did her dismal word of honour count More than a young woman's suffering? It seems that we have a lot of lessons That ought not to be learned from legends For if they might their swords will strike And make this verse more wretched. We call ourselves, not proudly so A modern tragedy of individuals But tell me oh little one on the fence, Can we not merely alter these rituals? Can we not bring about the change? That we want to see Can we not fell the scandalous beliefs, in which this strange society believes? I will grow old and so shall you And we will be drawn to a close But before we leave and dry out our soul, Should the truth not be disclosed? Should not we stop what seems be wrong? Should not we calm ill thoughts? Should not we learn to correct our history? Should we write wrong?

INTERVIEW Mohan –Smiles Foundation- Pooja Sinha Pooja- What is the main idea behind this organization? Mohan- The people here are all talented and knowledgeable people and have exceled in their lives and here the only thing they expect from us is ‘Dignity’. In other places they lack the same; we here try to serve them with love and affection and respect them and their dignity. Their children are not here, they fail to get proper facilities for themselves.

Pooja- What do you feel is the reason that they prefer to stay at an old age home?

Mohan- There are 39 rooms and 50 members in which 70% are NRI parents and rest are government employees. They have houses in the city but they live here mainly due to security issues. At home they fail to help themselves with basic needs of their day to day lives; their helpers also have chances of getting late, taking leaves; that make them very vulnerable. Here we provide them with all sorts of securities. We have three star servicing. We provide them with timely meal, six times a day; starting from bed tea at five in the morning, followed by snacks, lunch, evening snacks and dinner. The menu involves a full-fledged meal that they prefer. We regularly have menu meetings where they present their views on the food provided and also ask for whatever they want to eat. Also we provide them with other facilities like attached washrooms, geyser and TV. We have house keeping people serving daily cleaning their

7

rooms. The dhobi comes daily morning and returns the clothes by evening.

Pooja- What kind of relationship do they share with their children? Mohan- Most people here are those have great achievements but now lack the feeling of security living alone. Their children come to meet them whenever they get leaves from their work and take them to the city, stay with them and spend time with them. Also that we have guest house here for them to stay if they want to.

Pooja- What do you charge them against the facilities that you provide?

Mohan- It is a non- profit organization. We charge twenty thousand rupees per single room. We also have a double occupancy room at a lower rate of twelve thousand rupees for those who do not want to stay alone especially ladies, they prefer double occupancy. Also we take a medical deposit of two lakhs from each one of them so that they may be provided with best possible treatment in case of emergency.

Pooja- What do you do to engage them or prevent them from being sad?

Mohan- Every time we plan to engage these people via the medium of small programs. Every week there are about two programs; like stage performance of a veena master or visits by college students. Apart from this there is a Bhagwat Geeta meditation session of one hour; at evening there is an arrangement of rummy which is thoroughly enjoyed by them all. They also engage themselves in small volunteered activities like walk to the nearby temple. So these all engage them and help them to maintain a lifted mood.

8

Pooja- What is the criteria of providing them with personal attendants? Do you provide everyone with their personal attendants?

Mohan- This is an active elders’ home. While joining we do not encourage the admission of bed-ridden applicants. With time when the residents grow weak with time and except support, then we provide them with attendants who take care of them.in a period of six years, there have been around seven cases where people need assistance, there we provide them with attendants. We currently have nine attenders to take care of the residents.

Pooja- What are your further plans, are you planning to expand this organization?

Mohan- We are not in a mood of expanding this old age home. We are in demand for rooms, approximately hundred people are in waiting but we focus on personal touch and attention to each one of them and what we feel is that on expansion we may lose our grab on the personal attention that we now are able to provide to them. Instead of expanding this organization, our trustees have planned a girl orphanage which will be starting in a week.

Pooja- Can you please brief about this Girl Orphanage? Mohan- We have the inauguration of this orphanage in a week. We will be bringing children from the CWC (Child Welfare Committee). If we get children from near surroundings, we will hand over to the CWC and only after the government procedures; registration and recognition, we will take them. We will be taking girl child from 6 years to 12 years and provide them with all kinds of facilities along with proper education and healthcare and allow them to move out to the world when they become capable enough to earn their living or get married.

A Timeline Of A Long Turmoil-Aradhana Have you ever cried? Cried out so loud, that it was really difficult to breath? Breath behind those four walls, When there were no phone calls, And the clock that is fixed to the wall, Holding a circumference of life, Quietly mutters, tick-tock, tick-tock. So, if you’ve cried, you are lucky, For you have seen the world for what it is! Summer 2003, I ran around the field free, Chasing after butterflies, and kicking around stones that came my way, I wish, it was literal, for now when I think of it, They had to pay! A few boys of our colonies, Stopped, jerked, pushed and chuffed, called me names, While I stood there smiling, Pulling my ribbon and letting my hairs fall down, Which Maa tied, Saying, “You Are Beautiful”. I was 7. Spring 2009 I was feeling fine, I felt wet, in the dried bed, which turned red, I freaked out, screamed and shout, Ran to the washroom, My uncle helped me eventually, But his touch was different now I was 13

If you’ve tried you are lucky, for you have seen the world for Exactly what it is! Winter 2013, I felt warmth in all the hurting, I was lied, cheated & pushed aside By the love of my life. The same pain, the same cold, but chaos all around, I was 18. I have tried, I have cried, I have been molested and used, Married and bruised, Raped and scraped. But, never have I ever, Stopped myself from dreaming. Dreaming of a better world, Dreaming of a better tomorrow, Where humanity is not just a concept found in pages of the books. It’s autumn now, As old dried leaves fall down, and new life blooms, I think of my past, I have been scarred, When I was 7, and so were you, So, smile my dear, because this life with pain is sometimes, beautiful around you. And now life continues, With Leaves rusting, Woods churning, Metals scraping, Wheels spinning, Mind Racing, And this heart? It’s still beating:’)

Mankind-The killer of environment-Nikita World's progressing day by day At the cost of nature suffering as time sways. People becoming restless, flying at time's speed So is the environment and its serene beauty. With transports multiplying every hour Cutting down every minute of atmospheric spa. The stars are fading from the jaded sky Now looks sinister once peaceful with twinkling eyes. The enchanting moonlight used to gulf the streets Now lost amongst the clouds of smoke and fuels burnt by high speeds One look above the head, a bluish, white sky was the sight

Horse shaped, butterfly, ice cream look alike clouds Seems to me now all fading out Transparent water is now blue and green With germs and bacteria gloating to eternity Sitting in my car watching the view.

A scene of withering trees and naked branches asked Where is the air, the ambiance gone? Ebullient peace was sought with arms stretched out Breathing deep in the early morning open air

Will now rust the bronchitis and give asthma without fear Global warming becoming a subject of publicity

How will green award function carpets save the earth's serenity? The chirping of birds to the cracking of grasshoppers All is lost amongst big town car honkers How can one believe there used to be Adam and Eve Who were actually punished for eating from a sacred tree The fruits are vanishing and so the trees With faux fruits becoming the new showpiece The modern day yuppie is all about himself Who is bothered about the earth or The environment living in? New parameters are defining nature Air Conditioners are available Who needs to be the morning breeze inhaler? Adding on smoke, exhausting the fuels One day will come there would be nothing to use Nor the air, the water, the plants and fruits Animals will extinct soon as consumed food What will you eat and feed on then? With everything depleting as this earth spins The downfall of mankind has marked its onset Can you guess who'll die first- the environment or The one creating its deathbed?

*For she is a Girl*- Sumedha When she was born her father said "kill her I don't want a girl", He neither saw small white hands nor did he see those eyes like pearls. Her mother's pleading wouldn't let her die, Thus she grew up in this world of despise as the time passed by.

Walking through the road, with everyone staring, Taunting, teasing with snickers and jokes but no one caring. Oh poor girl! Discriminated, threatened and insecure, For their stands no one who cares and there stands no cure. Oh! God protect her for she stands alone, Before she becomes the target of demons and later we shall mourn.

We shall stand beside her, and bring her a new tomorrow, Cut off the evils from her world that bring malice and sorrow. Change the minds of people for they must know what she is worth, They must remember that it was a girl who gave them birth.
