AAAFF’s annual fest is a culmination of several months of preparation from our fantastic staff, volunteers, and community members, led by our Executive Director, Hanna Huang. We want to thank them for all the extra work that went into the last two years adapting to a new world, pivoting our programs onto online platforms, partnering with outdoor venues and much more The importance of AAAFF’s mission was further amplified in the last two years. Among many events, the rise of Asian hate crimes motivates us to further our mission of showcasing stories that center the Asian American experience and perspective. We believe in the magic of film in building understanding and connection, through love and humanity. Thank you once again for your support of AAAFF! We hope you enjoy this year’s program and stay connected with us. Sincerely,

Staff Letters

After taking on the mantle of Executive Director in January 2020, we're finally back at AFS Cinema for our film festival! I certainly didn't expect what was to come but since then we've been busy making sure that Austin continues to have an organization that not only produces thoughtfully curated programs that speak to and enhance understanding of the Asian American experience but also advocates for our creators behind the camera. credit: Dennis Burnett

Much of the work we do looks fun and glamorous from the outside. Who doesn't love watching films? However, the deeper work we are doing is truly about building a community that cares deeply for and follows the development of Asian American talent and stories on screen. In addition to that, we humbly try our best to advocate for AAPI funding in the arts space and connect our filmmakers to the resources and networks they need to succeed. Without them, we would not have films to program. If we learned anything since 2020, it's that we never stop consuming or turning to art as a way to nurture our souls, escape from reality, and learn about others. Please enjoy our annual celebration of a space that allows film lovers, filmmakers, and the local AAPI community to come together and watch the latest in indie film. With gratitude,

Hanna Huang Executive Director

"So. Damn. Excited. That's the only way I can start off describing my anticipation for this year's fest with everyone. I'm so incredibly proud of the passionate AAAFF team for making it all happen. I think we aim to up the overall experience with each annual festival and 2022 is no exception. It's a tradition that we connect with an artist to produce our main festival poster and we're so grateful that local Austin artist Ishaq Fahim created this year's stunning design. It has driven the look for the rest of the festival and given a cohesive way to visually celebrate and tie together 2022's fantastic programming. Along with new merch, improved on-screen presentation, fun parties, and much more, we hope you enjoy every part of AAAFF 2022 as much as we had putting it together! See you at the movies." - Ray Loyd, Creative Director

Staff Letters

If there's anything I discovered during last year's festival, it's that movies will always bring people together, even during what feels like the darkest of moments. This year the programming team had so many great films to choose from, films that we all felt equal amounts of passion for, so narrowing it down was one of the toughest in many years. From personal tableaus like Terrible Children, to grounded indies like Actual People, to films that manage to blend vital topics with touching personal details like Liquor Store Dreams, there are so many films to appreciate and fall in love with at this year's festival. I've been with the Austin Asian American Film Festival since its re-beginnings in 2014, and I couldn't be more proud of its growth, both internally within our staff, and externally with our tremendous audience. On behalf of the programming team, I can say we're so incredibly excited to share the experience of going to the movies again with everyone. I especially want to acknowledge feature programmers Jing Yang and Josh Martin for all their hard work, and countless hours of screenings and meetings. The festival would not be what it is without them. - Jenny Nulf, Programs Director

I joined the Austin Asian American Film Festival in April of 2020, so our 2022 festival will be my first in-person event as a staff member. I am so excited to be in the thick of it, and experience the beautiful AAAFF energy at AFS Cinema. Our short film submissions essentially doubled from last year, and along with our other Shorts Programmer, Yuxi Lai, we had our work cut out for us. We had the difficult task of narrowing down hundreds of films to just sixteen selections: two shorts blocks and a handful that will compliment our Features. Our Doc Shorts, “Snap Shots Around the World '' gives our audience a glimpse into what it is like to walk in someone else’s shoes; from Jeremy Lin of the New York Knicks to a Japanese American woman who was at an internment camp. Our Narrative Shorts, “Slice of Life” lets us get drawn into a character’s experience and the vulnerability that comes with it. We are incredibly grateful and privileged to share these films with you, and we hope you love them just as much as we do. - Neha Aziz, Community Programs Director & Film Programmer

DEALING WITH DAD

English

THURS 6/23 AT 7:30PM | Narrative

DIRECTOR/WRITER Tom Huang

Margaret Chang is rocked from her perfect alpha-momcorporate-manager life when she has to go back to her hometown to deal with her overbearing dad, Jialuo. Her dad is kind of an outspoken jerk but is now despondent and won’t leave the house. Since she can’t deal with her parents by herself, she drags along her older sad-sack brother, Roy to help her. When they arrive at their childhood home, they discover that their mom Sophie (equally overbearing) and youngest angry comic book nerd brother Larry (still living with parents) are happy with this situation... as it turns out, their dad is much more pleasant depressed than well. The siblings struggle to deal with his depression and wonder if it's even worth getting him better. In the meantime, they reconnect as a family by bickering and reminiscing about the bad times with Dad, discovering that their familial bond is stronger than they ever realized.

The film poses the universal question —must we betray our family to grow up? The filmmaker’s Indian father gives her a letter, which he left unopened for 20 years. She pieces together her father’s history of trauma and renewal—of family violence, boyhood in a right-wing paramilitary group, Muslim-Hindu violence during Partition, and family banishment for marrying a Danish woman.

About AAAFF

Austin Asian American Film Festival (AAAFF) began as a showcasespecific event that has now broadened to a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Our mission of championing Asian and Asian American stories via media arts and empowering Asian Americans to explore opportunities in cinema continues as we expand to include more collaborations with our peer film festival organizations in North America, educational programs, an AA/PI filmmaker database, and film industry resources for creatives. From our flagship annual festival that highlights new Asian and Asian American films to our year-round community screening events, the organization has grown from one run by volunteers to a nationally recognized non-profit. AAAFF is a member of the newly established Color Congress, advocates locally for AAPI arts funding, and has sponsored projects like STORIES WITHIN, which was a finalist for the inaugural Gold Futures Challenge in 2021. AAAFF programs speak to and enhance understanding of the AA/PI experience through film.
