Flying Events Flying Event was canceled this month due to uncooperative winds. Thank you to Barbara Fricke for volunteering to be a hare balloon and Dave Tennis for presenting weather. Thank you also to our score meister, Dave Bagley and Sam Bradshaw for handling our NOTAM.

Crew D The Mother's Day event was another no fly day. We still received 2 photos for the Mother's Day photo contest. Both Mike Voorhees' and Craig Pendleton's crew will receive equal points. There was no event scheduled for June. The July event is the Tailgate Cookoff. This will happen July 8th at Fiesta Field. Official rules will be posted on the web site. This year there will be a secret ingredient that you will need to incorporate into your dishes. Stay tuned for more details. The Crew D team is also preparing for the Navigator crew seminar in September. If you want to help, let someone on the committee know.

Community Relations Community Relations has no current request for this month.

Education The Commercial Pilot Ground School was held on April 27-29. We 19 students attending including students from TX, MO, NV and NE, and the rest from NM. The second Private Pilot Ground School for 2018 was held June 1-3. We had 24 students attending including students from CO, VA, CA, AZ, OR, MI, MO, and 13 from our local NM ballooning community. We would like to thank all the instructors who participated in these schools: Beth Wright-Smith, JD Huss, Chris Kenworthy, Tom Fisher, Dave Tennis, Don Boyer, Barbara Fricke, Ray Bair, Fred Lete, Clark O’Byrne, Peg Billson, Neal Smith, Ken Beebe and Gary Medina from the FAA. Also, all the other members of the Education Committee who help in support roles. We especially appreciate the AIBF for the use of their classroom facilities.

Video Recording: We have video recorded the Effective Instructing Seminar , Commercial and Private Ground Schools. Our plan is to eventually record all our classes and seminars and make them available online. Ken Tuley has created a YouTube channel for us. There are also a few other AAAA channels lurking on YouTube but we don’t know who set them up nor who are the admins. The current channel is “Albuquerque Aerostat Ascension Association (AAAA)” and the direct link is: http://bit.ly/AAAAvideo . Please hit the subscribe button on the page. Access to the videos and a fee structure is still being discussed. Youth Committee: Planning for the BFA Rio Grande Balloon Camp is going well. The camp will be July 7-12. The camp is full with a majority being first time campers.

Ways & Means This year’s annual AAAA Roster are in the works. We will let you know when these items become available. Sponsor banners have been printed for this year's sponsors. We will need volunteers to fly the banners at each AAAA Flying event. Each pilot will sign the banner after flying and return it. At the end of the year the sponsors will receive their banner at the AAAA Awards Banquet as a gift. All pilots that fly a banner during the year will be entered into a drawing for an BIG prize at the banquet too! We are working on a fun but secret fundraiser for this summer. The fundraiser will be held around mid summer at Westside and Unser during tailgate. We are looking for some daring individuals who would be willing to participate! Each month we will reveal a little more information. This is not something your going to want to miss!!! Please contact me if your interested. Stay tuned for more info! Looking to join a fun and exciting committee? Look no further than Ways and Means. Our next committee meeting is May 9th at 5:30pm outside at Steel Bender Brewpub. See you there!

Special Events

Hello! The Special Events year (as we on the committee like to call it) has started up and this is the final year I will be the Board Liaison. If you are interested in running for the position next March, please consider becoming a part of the committee now and see how Special Events make the magic happen! Spending a year seeing the inner workings and learning the ropes would be a huge advantage to whomever runs and wins next March! The first event will be the ice cream social! This will take place at the June Flying Event in Rio Rancho. Special Events will be scooping and serving until the ice cream runs out!!!! The scooping will start as soon as people return from flying … if the event is cancelled due to weather we will be serving dessert at the July Tailgate Cookoff! The AAAA Picnic is scheduled for August 4 at the Elena Gallegos Double Shelter Picnic Area. (This is the same place it was last year.) Steve Mezzancello will be making his final appearance as Grill Master. Times will be announced closer to the event. Upcoming Events: June 9th -- Ice Cream Social August 4th -- AAAA Picnic December 8-9 -- Jingle Bell Feb 8-10, 2019 -- Friends and Lovers

Safety Corner FAA TO END DUATS SERVICE MAY 16 PHONE BRIEFINGS, FSS WEBSITE WON’T BE AFFECTED

In response to pilot inquiries, AOPA is advising pilots that they will still have access to internet-based services including weather and aeronautical information, flight plan filing, and automated services at no charge at the flight service website. AOPA urges pilots to register for the website and use its services. The FAA also made that recommendation in a March 13 announcement of the

discontinuation of DUATS, which was introduced in 1989 and is credited with introducing many pilots to automated flightinformation services. Between now and May 16, the FAA is working with the two current DUATS II providers, Leidos and CSRA Inc., “conducting pilot outreach, establishing commercial interfaces, and providing user migration assistance,” it said. Leidos and CSRA Inc., have posted banners on their websites alerting pilots to the change, and detailing options available for receiving online weather briefings. Another option available to pilots is the AOPA Flight Planner, which offers a free preflight briefing service through Leidos. FSS website, phone briefings remain available Pilots should note that the flight service website, operated by Leidos, will function as usual after the end of DUATS II, said Rune Duke, AOPA senior director of government affairs for airspace, air traffic, and security. The FAA contract with Leidos extends to the year 2020, during which time the FAA is preparing for its Future Flights Services program—a contract it expects to award in the next year. AOPA has been an active participant with the FAA in crafting the Future Flight Service Program's (FFSP) services and requirements to address the needs of GA. “We think it is important, and the FAA agreed, that having the customer’s voice in the room is critical to this process resulting in a successful Future Flights Services program,” Duke said.

“We understand the importance to pilots of being able to call flight service and ask questions and receive flight critical information. This service is critical to safety and we believe it is important the FAA maintain this service for the foreseeable future,” he added. The critical nature of “unencumbered access to speak to a flight service specialist” for pilots was a point of emphasis in an April 10 letter from AOPA Vice President of Government Affairs Melissa Rudinger to the FAA’s the Future Flight Services Program’s managers. “Many barriers prevent the realization of a fully automated preflight and inflight service, but we propose that working together we can promote the utilization of online selfassisted services and see the migration of many more General Aviation pilots to automated services,” she wrote.

Community Requests GREETINGS! I am a member of the AIBF Heritage Committee. Jewel Cutter and I are working on an article for the 2018 Fiesta program and could use some help. We are writing about the Balloon Fiesta Queens. We have some information, but many blanks. Is there a way to ask the AAAA members whether they have information on Balloon Fiesta Queens? We are also interested in the Fiesta Parades. We appreciate any help you can provide. Information can be sent to me at mnason@cabq.gov Regards, Marilee ************************************************** Marilee Schmit Nason, Ph.D., Curator of Collections Anderson – Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum

COMMENTS: Well here we are 11 months down and one to go. Both entities have operated within the approved budget for the year. Our Vice President has changed things up with his Toast & Roast’s and excellent programs and The Safety Corner. All in all it has been a successful year and your Board is already planning next years events. Why don’t you invite yourself to a committee meeting and get in on the fun.
