Brantley has 4 RBIs as Indians beat Orioles 5-2

BALTIMORE (AP) — Michael Brantley homered and had four RBIs, and the Cleveland Indians beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-2 Monday night for their ninth win in 12 games. Brantley put the Indians ahead with a two-run single in the sixth inning and made it 5-2 with a two-run shot in the eighth off Darren O’Day. His four RBIs tied a career high, reached twice previously. Nick Swisher had two hits and scored a run for the Indians, and former Oriole Mark Reynolds went 1 for 2 with two walks. The victory improved Cleveland’s record against the AL East to 7-17 and provided an uplifting start to an 11-game road trip. Ubaldo Jimenez (6-4) allowed two runs in 5 1⁄3 innings and Vinnie Pestano, the fourth Indians reliever, worked the ninth for his fourth save. Nick Markakis and Matt Wieters homered for the Orioles, who have lost four straight. Zach Britton (1-2) allowed only two hits through five innings and took a 2-0 lead into the sixth before faltering. Jason Kipnis led off with a double and scored on a single by Swisher. Carlos Santana followed with a double to put runners at second and third, and after Reynolds received an intentional walk, Brantley grounded a single up the middle to chase Britton. Brantley iced it in the eighth with his fifth homer after a leadoff single by Reynolds. After being swept in a three-game series in Toronto, the Orioles hoped a return to Camden Yards would reverse their slide. But their only offense came on two swings of the bat. After Markakis put Baltimore up 1-0 in the first inning with his eighth home run, the Orioles left the bases loaded in the second and stranded two runners in the third. Wieters led off the fourth with his 10th home run to end an 0-for-13 skid and make it 2-0.

Hellickson, Rays cool off surging Blue Jays, 4-1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Jeremy Hellickson allowed one hit in seven shutout innings and rookie Wil Myers homered in his home debut, helping the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Blue Jays 4-1 on Monday night to end Toronto’s 11-game winning streak. Myers hit the second of three straight Tampa Bay homers in the second, connecting in his first at-bat at Tropicana Field. He received a standing ovation from a crowd of 11,407 getting its initial close-up view of the key acquisition in the offseason trade that sent pitchers James Shields and Wade Davis to Kansas City for the power-hitting right fielder and other prospects. Myers’ drive to center off Esmil Rogers (3-3) was sandwiched between home runs by James Loney and Sam Fuld as Tampa Bay went deep three times within a span of eight pitches. Luke Scott added a bloop RBI double to make it 4-0 in the third, and that was all the support Hellickson needed. A night after scoring a season-high 13 runs at home to complete a three-game sweep of Baltimore, the Blue Jays were limited to four singles and five walks. They came up short in their bid to extend the longest winning streak in the majors since Detroit won 12 straight in 2011. Hellickson (6-3) gave up J.P. Arencibia’s single, walked four and struck out four. He allowed only one runner past first base — in the second inning, when Colby Rasmus walked and moved to third when Arencibia followed with his hit to center field. The Blue Jays stranded Rasmus, who drew three of Toronto’s five walks, when Maicer Izturis grounded into an inning-ending double play.

Toronto finally broke through in the eighth when it loaded the bases with one out against Alex Torres with a pair of singles and a walk. AP Source: Clippers land new coach in Doc Rivers

BOSTON (AP) — Doc Rivers will be the next coach of the Los Angeles Clippers if the NBA approves the rare but not unprecedented trade of an active coach, a Boston Celtics official told The Associated Press on Sunday night. The deal would bring Boston a first-round draft pick in 2015, according to the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because it is pending a trade call with the NBA office. Rivers, who had three years and $21 million left on his contract with the Celtics, must also reach an agreement on a new deal with the Clippers. Celtics spokesman Jeff Twiss said the team had no announcement. The tentative agreement on Sunday wraps up weeks of haggling over the deal and frees Rivers from presiding over the dismantling of the team that won the franchise’s record 17th NBA title in 2008. The Celtics and Clippers have also discussed sending Kevin Garnett to Los Angeles in a package with Rivers for draft choices, center DeAndre Jordan and point guard Eric Bledsoe. But NBA commissioner David Stern nixed those talks this week, saying teams aren’t allowed to trade active players for a coach. A deal for Garnett could still happen, but the teams would have to convince the league that it was a separate deal. The 37-year-old big man has a no-trade clause in the contract that will pay him 23.5 million over the next two years, but it is believed he would waive it to be reunited with Rivers on the West Coast. He has also discussed retiring. Boston could also cut ties with Paul Pierce, the longest-tenured member of the team, who is due to earn $15.3 million next season; he could be bought out for $5 million. Pierce will be 36 by the 2013-14 opener and showed signs of slowing down this season, when he averaged the fewest minutes per game in his career. Rivers took over the Celtics in 2004 in the midst of the longest title drought in franchise history and — with thanks to the New Big Three of Garnett, Pierce and Ray Allen — guided them to the 2008 NBA title. They returned to the NBA Finals two years later, losing to the Los Angeles Lakers in seven games. But the Celtics have regressed steadily since then, twice failing to get past the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference playoffs. This year they finished third in the Atlantic Division — they had won it five straight times — and lost to the New York Knicks in the first round. That convinced many that it was time to rebuild — a process Rivers was reluctant to supervise. If the Celtics unload Garnett and Pierce, that would leave them with point guard Rajon Rondo as their only established star. Rivers had the second-longest tenure of any NBA coach to San Antonio’s Gregg Popovich, compiling a 416-305 record in Boston that was the third-most wins in franchise history behind Red Auerbach (795) and Tommy Heinsohn (427). He also spent fourplus seasons with the Orlando Magic and is 587-473 in all.

Brian Shaw has agreed to succeed George Karl as coach of the Denver Nuggets. The person spoke to The AP on condition of anonymity Monday night because the deal hadn’t been officially announced. The Nuggets called a news conference for Tuesday afternoon to introduce their new coach. The Denver Post first announced the agreement with Shaw, and the former Phil Jackson pupil told the newspaper he’s been “prepared by the best of the best” for his first NBA head coaching job. Shaw is a former NBA guard and longtime assistant NBA coach who has interviewed about a dozen times for head coaching positions but kept coming up short until Monday.

Police search again near home of Pats’ Hernandez

NORTH ATTLEBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Police again searched the area near the home of New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez, a week after his friend’s body was found about a mile away. Some police officers wore wetsuits Monday while searching woods near Hernandez’s home, not far from the industrial park where Odin Lloyd’s body was found. Lloyd, a 27-year-old semi-pro football player for the Boston Bandits, was found slain June 17. His relatives said he was dating the sister of Hernandez’s fiancee, that the two men were friends and that both men were out together on the last night of Lloyd’s life. An Attleboro District Court official said no new documents were available in connection with the case Monday morning. The Bristol County district attorney’s office also didn’t release any new information about the case, which their spokeswoman called “an active, ongoing investigation.” A court official said last week that three search warrants had been issued, but none of them had been returned, meaning they weren’t yet public. Hernandez hasn’t commented on the homicide investigation, but has been seen with his lawyer. The Patriots drafted Hernandez, who is originally from Bristol, Conn., out of the University of Florida in 2010. Last summer, the team gave him a five-year contract worth $40 million.
