The spy who burned me

“Real People… Real Solutions”

USA is playing with fire as ‘Burn Notice’ returns By Dee Wright TV Media

e all have our own little blacklist -- a collection of restaurants that gave bad service, stores that sold poor products, or even people who can’t be trusted. It’s rare that we change our minds on what we’ve already blacklisted. Six years ago, Agent Michael Westen was blacklisted -- he was labeled as an unfit, unreliable and possibly even dangerous agent. Unaware of what he did to become “burned,” he needed to connect the dots in order to get his life back. His assets were frozen and his contacts are all wiped out, leaving him as a floater in society. With no money, no job and essentially no identity, he is stuck in Miami with only the help of his ex-girlfriend and former agent Fiona to find the answers. “Burn Notice” airs Thursdays on USA, and will resume new episodes next week after taking a break for the Fourth of July programming. Over the past five seasons, Michael (Jeffrey Donovan) has fought his way through the list of enemies to figure out who was behind his original burn notice. He’s lost several allies and friends while trying to find his answers, but nothing has held him back from discovering the truth. As a spy, Michael has become a great liar -- he can assume an identity and personality, complete with backstories and accents, to complete any job. He and Fiona (Gabrielle Anwar) team up as private investigators to make ends meet while they search for justice.

At the end of last season, he learned that he’d been burned by Anson Fullerton, a member of an organization that Michael had previously upended. Michael’s life is turned upside down, however, when he learns that Fiona knew about Anson the whole time and was being blackmailed by him. As with past premieres, Season 6 picks up moments after the last episode ended. Fiona has turned herself in to the police, both surrendering to accusations made against her and solidifying her security against her enemies. While she’s behind bars, Anson is unable to use her to get to Michael, and Michael is free to get his revenge. This season also introduces several guest stars, including John C. McGinley (“Scrubs”), Taryn Manning (“Sons of Anarchy”) and Richard Burgi (“Desperate Housewives”). The season premiere, which aired June 14, introduced a new title sequence, which was selected by online fan voting. The two options were either an updated version of the original (with new clips from episodes) or a total rehaul. The former was chosen. Donovan will once again stand behind the camera this season, directing the second “Burn Notice” episode, and for the second time during the series. Donovan also directed the prequel movie, “Burn Notice: The Fall of Sam Axe”, in 2011, which provided some of the complicated backstory for Michael’s mentor. Outside of his “Burn Notice” setting, Donovan starred in a pair of Clint Eastwood-directed features, starring as Robert Kennedy in “J. Edgar” (2011) and Capt. J.J.

Jeffrey Donovan stars in “Burn Notice” Jones in “Changeling” (2008). He also starred in USA’s “Touching Evil.” Anwar is likely more familiar to fans of period pieces -- she has appeared in a number of historical fiction series and movies. She had a multiple episode arc in “The Tudors” and starred as Queen Anne in 1993’s “The Three Musketeers.” She also appeared in the late-’80s series “Prince Caspian and the Voyage of the Dawn Treader,” and 1995’s “In Pursuit of Honor.” She also had the lead role in “Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken” (1991). Horror movie star and cult film fan favourite Bruce Campbell also stars in “Burn Notice,” taking on the role of Sam Axe. Campbell has starred in 1981’s “The Evil Dead”
