Gov: Keep guns from mentally ill

Vol. 121, No. 303 75¢ Daily / $1.25 Sunday

ALBUQUERQUE (AP) — New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez said the state should consider taking steps to prevent mentally ill people from getting guns. The governor tells The Albuquerque Journal in a statement that she will pursue a proposal during the legislative session next year that would require the state to provide information on people who have been found by a court to be mentally ill or have been committed to an institution. newspaper about gun control after last week’s Connecticut school shooting that left 20 young students and six adults dead. The gunman also killed his mother and himself. Asked about the suddenly renewed political push to increase gun restrictions in the United States, Martinez emphasized the need to better recognize and battle mental health problems to curb gun violence. The New Mexico governor said a push is needed to ensure national criminal databases have updated information on an individ-

ual’s mental health status that would be flagged in federal background checks before some gun sales. Criminals and mentally ill people should never have access to guns, she said. The state’s next session of the Legislature convenes Jan. 15. Martinez said state officials will have discussions about protecting school children by reviewing safety policies at schools, The governor expressed sympathy for victims of the mass shooting “So many of the innocent victims who lost their lives

As a prosecutor and gover nor, she often has expressed special concern about violence against children.

ARREOLA OUT?

By most standards, Robert Arreola has had a fairly successful tenure as the head coach of the Roswell football team. But maybe not successful enough to keep his job. After three playoff appearances in five seasons, Arreola is apparently on the chopping block. He was asked to resign last week, but declined, saying that he “wasn’t going to quit.” Roswell athletic director Brian Shea refused to speak on the record about the issue, stating only ...

licenses as ID OK School suspends student with ‘hit list’ Driver’s If you’re scrambling to or from federal facilities as A 14-year -old eighthgrade student in Ruidoso has been suspended from Ruidoso Middle School after allegedly threatening to kill other students, according to a press release from the Ruidoso Police Department. Ruidoso Police were notified of the threat by the Ruidoso Municipal Schools interim superintendent on Friday, the same day of the school shootings in Newtown, Conn. Ruidoso Police reported to the school Friday and interviewed several student witnesses about the alleged threats. The witnesses, all eighthgraders, alleged that their classmate had written out a list of students he said he wanted to kill after

returning to class following an outside recess. Some of the witnesses claimed the student said he intended to bring a gun to school the next day and kill the students on the list. When Ruidoso Police interviewed the student who was alleged to have made the threats, the student, in the presence of his parents and a school representative, admitted he had authored a list of names and that he had told his classmates he intended to kill students. The student said he had been angry over being bullied and by being accused of breaking another student’s toy on the playground the day before. The student said

he ripped up the list later that day and that he never intended to kill anybody. The student and his father admitted that there were guns locked in a safe at the family’s home, but said the student had no access to them. The facts of the incident were presented to the 12th Judicial District Attorney’s Office and the FBI for review and determination of any charges, and both organizations agreed that nothing about the incident rose to the level of a delinquent act or a prosecutable criminal offense. No criminal charges were filed regarding the incident and the matter has been referred back to Ruidoso Schools.

determine whether or not you’ll still be able to get on a plane in New Mexico with your driver’s license next year, it appears you can rest easy for a while. New Mexico is currently one of 24 states that are not in compliance with the federal Real ID Act, but according to an email the Daily Record received Tuesday from U.S. Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Marsha Catron, the Jan. 15 deadline for compliance applies only to the state meeting requirements, not an individual. The deadline has been extended multiple times and could be extended again, but even if it isn’t, it seems that New Mexico residents who use their driver’s licenses as identification next month will not be turned away at the airport

many residents had feared. Starting in December 2014, however, a stateissued driver’s license or ID card cannot be used by a person under the age of 50 to board a commercial airliner or enter a federal building unless the identification complies with Real ID requirements. The deadline for everyone else is December 2017. The Real ID Act mandates that states have certain security features on driver’s licenses and identification cards and says they must be connected to a national database of license information. The Real ID Act began as H.R. 418 and was approved by the House of Representatives on Feb. 10, 2005, See ID, Page A3
