Governor spends $1.9 million on re-election
SANTA FE (AP) — Republican Gov. Susana Martinez spent nine times more than Democratic challenger Gary King during the past month as she flooded the airwaves with hard-hitting television campaign ads, according to fundraising reports filed Tuesday. Martinez retains a hefty advantage in campaign cash over King with Election Day looming only a few weeks away. The incumbent reported cash-on-hand of $2.7 million as of last week, while King had $123,651. Martinez spent $1.9 million from Sept. 2 through Oct. 6, including $1.2 million on TV and radio advertising, $221,000 on targeted mailings to voters and $87,000 on polling. In contrast, King spent nearly $205,849 but nothing on TV ads in the past month. He launched a new ad late last week after the reporting period covered by the latest campaign-finance disclosures submitted to the secretary of state’s office. King’s expenditures included about $7,500 for campaign canvassers and $35,600 in refunds of contributions from companies affiliated with a wealthy financier who’s a convicted sex of fender in Florida. King announced plans last month to refund the contributions. Martinez raised $763,591, including $41,600 from companies affiliated with Artesia oil producer Mack Chase and his family. Including those donations, oil-industry interests gave at least $88,000 to the governor’s re-election. King collected $171,770 in contributions, including a $1,000 personal loan.

King has loaned more than $500,000 to his primary and general election campaigns. Labor unions contributed $21,950 to King, including $5,200 from the National Education Association. King has been sharply critical of Martinez’s educational policies, including a teacher-evaluation system that relies heavily on student performance on standards-based tests. Other donors to King included former Gov. Bill Richardson ($5,000) and the Fort Sill Apache Tribe, which won a court fight against the Martinez administration to gain recognition as a New Mexico Indian tribe.
UNM cancels student Africa trip over Ebola fears
ALBUQUERQUE (AP) — The University of New Mexico has canceled a student trip to Africa partly out of concern over Ebola. KOB-TV reports that school officials recently told nursing students the planned “Project Helping Hands” to a remote village in Kenya was called off. The university cited as reasons the unpredictable spread of Ebola and the growing political and economic turmoil in parts of Africa. Cristina Beato, who is in charge of the school’s International Health Policy, says World Health Organization also has labeled Kenya as high-risk for Ebola since it is a major hub for transportation. Nursing student Yeshemabet Turner says she understood the school’s decision but was devastated. Turner says she and her classmates had been collecting medical supplies and shoes since March.

year with about 730 arrests, the Daily Times reports.
In 2011, the department made 653 such arrests, the highest number in the past four years.
Police Chief Steve Hebbe attributes the increased arrests to better officer training and a recent spike in 911 calls from people reporting suspected drunken drivers. Local dispatchers received almost 300 calls in August from citizens reporting suspected drunk drivers, a “significantly higher” number of calls than in previous months, Farmington traffic Sgt. David Karst said. “I think (the number of arrests) is going to keep climbing,” Karst said. “I think we are going to surpass last year’s numbers significantly, and I expect in 2015 we can reach over 1,000 arrests.”
The department is urging people who witness erratic driving to report it to 911 and stay on the line with dispatchers, if it is safe, so that officers can be kept informed about the suspect’s whereabouts.
Increased officer training and awareness is also having an impact, Karst said. A total of 13 Farmington traffic officers have recently received training to become “drugrecognition experts,” so that they can better identify the signs that a driver is drug impaired, he said.
