VA secretary: Albuquerque staff acted properly Emergency response records show that an ambulance arrived to help Garcia about 10 minutes after the 911 call. Officials said VA staff along with Kirtland Air Force Base personnel immediately responded in providing basic life support to Garcia. Gibson said it would have been difficult to keep Garcia on an automated external defibrillator or perform CPR if he was placed on a gur ney and rush to the emergency room on foot. He also said his department is

Center, said an initial review found staffers followed procedure in providing help to the Vietnam War veteran. “I thanked every single one of them individually,” Gibson said. “As I heard what they did, and I stood and look at them in the eye, I was very proud.” Hospital emergency experts have said it’s standard for medical centers to require staffers to call 911, even when patients are near an emergency room. VA officials say such policy is in place at its hospitals across the country.

ALBUQUERQUE (AP) — Acting Veterans Affairs Secretary Sloan Gibson said Thursday that staffers at Albuquerque’s VA hospital responded properly when a veteran collapsed and died in the medical center’s cafeteria. Hospital staff faced scrutiny after the death of 71-year-old Jim Napoleon Garcia, who received CPR on the floor while an ambulance was called to take him to an emergency room 500 yards away. reviewing the case to see whether systemwide changes are needed. Potential revisions could include requiring “crash carts” of medication in key areas around VA campuses. The procedural review comes as the VA deals with a national outcry over reports of long delays for treatment and medical appointments and of veterans dying while on waiting lists. A review of Albuquerque’s Veterans Affairs hospital released Thursday shows there were 353 veterans on the electronic waiting

list, down from more than 1,040 a month ago. The list includes new patients for whom appointments cannot be scheduled within 90 days.

Gibson said the department is working with an outside contractor to audit wait times.

“We are in the final stages of negotiating a contract for a rigorous site-by-site audit, independent audit, of scheduling practices” across the Veterans Health Administration, he said.

Roswell police detectives continue to search for Steven Lucero in connection with the murder of Isaiah Sanchez. Detectives arrested his brother, Gilbert Lucero, 32, on Wednesday, following a traffic stop, on an outstanding warrant for murder in connection with the death of Sanchez. Sanchez, 30, was discovered dead in a residence located at 1812 N. Maryland Ave. in Roswell at about 8:30 p.m. on June 4. Sanchez was a longtime resident of San Patricio, until four years ago when he moved to Roswell to attend Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell, where he graduated in July of 2012 and December of 2013 with honors. He worked as a

mechanic at a local mechanic shop in Roswell, according to his obituary. During the course of the investigation, detectives obtained sufficient probable cause and secured arrest warrants for both Gilbert Lucero and Steven Lucero, according to police. Steven Lucero is still atlarge and detectives are seeking the public’s assistance in locating him.

“The detectives believe that Steven has connections in Texas,” said Roswell Police Officer Lisa Brackeen. “They are still investigating the case and exploring the motive, and trying to tie that all in together.” Brackeen said the detectives have no new information to release at this time, and that they do not have a motive for the killing.

GOP SENATE CANDIDATE LENDS HIS CAMPAIGN $555,000

SANTA FE (AP) — Democratic Sen. Tom Udall has stockpiled more than $3 million for his re-election bid, but Republican challenger Allen Weh is dipping into personal money to jumpstart his campaign for the general election. Weh, a former state GOP chairman, has lent his campaign more than a half million dollars in the past three months, allowing him to raise more money than Udall during that time, according to a Federal Election Commission finance report and a fundraising summary released by Weh’s campaign. Udall reported $3.4 million in his campaign account at the end of last month. Weh had a balance of $627,806. Weh raised $905,266 from April through June, with $555,000 coming from personal loans. His campaign spent about $483,000. Udall reported total receipts of $890,105 during the past quarter, and his campaign spent about $607,000.

Weh won the GOP nomination in a two-way race in the June primary election. Udall had no primary opponent. Weh is a retired Marine colonel who owns a charter aircraft and leasing company in Albuquerque. In the 2nd Congressional District, Democratic challenger Roxanne “Rocky” Lara raised more money in the past three months than Republican incumbent Steve Pearce. Pearce still maintains an overall cash advantage, however. Pearce reported nearly $1.5 million on hand at the end of last month and Lara had $711,821, according to reports filed with the FEC. National Democrats have targeted the congressional race in southern New Mexico in hopes of flipping the seat from GOP control. Lara raised $375,018 from April through June, and Pearce had receipts of $289,201. Both ran unopposed in the June primary election. Labor union political action committees contributed at least $55,500

Pearce’s top contributors included the PAC of Union Pacific Corp., which gave $7,000. The company recently opened a large railroad hub in the district near the border community of Santa Teresa.

In the Albuquerque area’s 1st Congressional District, Democratic incumbent Michelle Lujan Grisham reported a cash balance of $922,790 and Republican Michael Frese had $12,171.

Grisham raised $241,155, including about $52,000 from health care industry PACs. Frese had total receipts of $51,923, including a personal loan of $10,000. Frese, a Corrales business owner, won a two-way primary race. Grisham had no primary opposition.

shooting incident

STAFF REPORT

Eddy County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested two people in connection with a shooting incident following the theft of a trailer and subsequent chase on June 29, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office. Joe Keith Smith and Robbie Morgan, both of Artesia, were arrested in connection with the crime. Smith was arrested on Saturday in Artesia without incident, and he is charged with accessory to shooting at or from a motor vehicle. Morgan was arrested on Thursday in Dallas, Texas, by the Dallas Police Department and he is awaiting extradition back to New Mexico, according to the release. Morgan is facing charges of shooting at or from a motor vehicle. Both charges are fourthdegree felonies. On June 29, Morgan reported the larceny of his

welder/trailer stolen from his residence. After reporting the incident, Morgan called his friend Smith. Both Smith and Morgan went to look for the trailer on their own. A brown Dodge pickup was located in the area of Four Dinkus in which Smith pursued the truck. While pursing the truck, Morgan discharged a handgun in an attempt to stop the truck, according to police. The incident ended at York and Main Street, where both Morgan and Smith were struck by a bullet fired at them. Both were transported to Artesia General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Smith was released and Morgan was flown to a Texas hospital for treatment. The incident is still being investigated by the Eddy County Sheriff’s Office Detectives Division, according to the report.
