AEG attacks projection of $1B earnings for Jackson LOS ANGELES (AP) — An expert who projected Michael Jackson could have ear ned more than $1 billion on his comeback concerts testified Tuesday that his analysis didn’t include a breakdown of the singer’s yearly earnings over his lifetime and projected a longer concert tour than the superstar had ever performed. Arthur Erk, a certified public accountant who is an expert in musicians’ royalties, said his analysis didn’t take into consideration figures detailing Jackson’s spending over the years. His projection that Jackson would have ear ned between $1.1 billion and $1.5 billion if he performed a 37-month, 260show tour and crafted a Las Vegas show came under attack Tuesday by a lawyer for concert promoter AEG Live LLC. He said his figures were a conservative estimate of Jackson’s ear ning potential if he had lived. AEG Live attorney Sabrina Strong attacked Erk’s projections, saying they were inconsistent with Jackson’s historical spending, earnings or figures of how many sold-out shows Jackson would have performed. “It wasn’t a matter of history,” Erk said. “This was going to be a final extravaganza. He was going to do a blowout tour, he would have ear ned a lot of money.” Erk is testifying for Jackson’s mother in her lawsuit against AEG Live, claiming the company is liable for her son’s death because it failed to properly

investigate the doctor who administered a fatal overdose of an anesthetic propofol in June 2009. At the time of his death, Jackson was preparing for 50 comeback concerts in London called “This Is It,” but there was the possibility the singer would have embarked on a worldwide

tour. The accountant based his calculations on documents prepared by AEG, but on crossexamination conceded that the company never projected the singer would earn more than $1 billion after the “This Is It” shows opened. He said he didn’t

have infor mation regarding Jackson’s earnings over his lifetime. Erk’s estimate contemplated Jackson receiving hundreds of millions of dollars in merchandise, endorsement deals and royalties from a Las Vegas show based on his music and

archival footage. Strong showed Erk a chart that showed that Jackson’s three previous solo tours comprised 275 shows over a 10year span. She challenged Erk’s contention that he was being conservative by projecting Jackson would have performed 260 shows over a three-year period. Strong also attacked Erk’s calculation that Jackson would have spent $134 million between ages 50 and 65. She cited testimony from Jackson’s former business managers and accountants in depositions that Jackson was historically outspending his earnings by millions of dollars each year. Jackson died an estimated $400 million in debt. Strong also questioned Erk whether he should have taken into account Jackson’s reputation after his acquittal on child molestation charges and when he dangled his infant son Blanket off a hotel balcony in 2002. Erk said those didn’t matter in his projections. Plaintiff’s attorney Brian Panish said Erk’s projections were based on AEG’s plans to do a worldwide tour, and the company had no qualms about spending millions of dollars to prepare for the “This Is It” shows. He said he planned to show that some of AEG’s points brought out on cross-examination were not right. “We’re not done yet,” Panish said.

Mississippi blues guitarist, singer ‘T-Model’ Ford dies

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — James Lewis Carter “T Model” Ford, a hard-living blues singer who taught himself to play guitar when he was 58 years old and his fifth wife left him, died Tuesday at his home in Greenville, Miss. His age was uncertain. Washington County Coroner Methel Johnson said the family told her Ford was born in 1924 and had already had his birthday this year, which would have made him 89. But a blues expert and longtime friend, Roger Stolle (STOH-

lee), said Ford didn’t remember what year he was born and claimed to be 93. Johnson told The Associated Press that Ford had been under hospice care and died of respiratory failure shortly after 10 a.m. CDT Tuesday. She said he was at home with several relatives, including his wife, Estella Ford. Stolle, who owns a Clarksdale, Miss., store called Cat Head Delta Blues & Folk Art, accompanied Ford and other blues men when they

toured Europe in 2009. He also traveled with Ford to gigs in New York. “He was known as one of the last really authentic Mississippi blues men,” Stolle told AP on Tuesday. “He has a story and could back it up.” When Ford was young, he served two years of a 10-year prison sentence for killing a man in selfdefense, and he had scars on his ankles from serving on a prison chain gang, Stolle said. Ford had six wives and 26 children, Stolle said.

When Ford’s fifth wife left him, she gave him a guitar as a parting gift. “He stayed up all night drinking white whiskey,” or moonshine, “and playing the guitar,” Stolle said. “He kind of went on from there.” Ford started his blues career by playing at private parties and at juke joints in Greenville. “He’d play late, then he’d spray himself with a bunch of mosquito spray and sleep in his van,” Stolle said. Stolle said Ford recorded

seven albums with three labels, including three albums with Fat Possum Records in Oxford, Miss. Clarksdale Mayor Bill Luckett, who co-owns the city’s Ground Zero Blues Club with actor Morgan Freeman, said Ford was “a master of old-school blues” with an international following. “His music would take you right back to the heart and soul of the Delta, back in the day,” Luckett said. Ford would show up for gigs early and often play longer than expected, even

when he started experiencing heart problems in recent years, Stolle said. Ford would also swig Jack Daniels on stage and chat with the audience. Often, he’d pick out a happy-looking couple that included an attractive woman and would talk directly to the man. “He’d say, ‘You’d better put your stamp on her because if she flags my train, I’m going to let her ride,”’ Stolle said. “He’d do it with a gleam in his eye and a smile. He could get away with a lot.”

Romania: Museum checks to see if paintings burned

This photo released by the police in Rotterdam, Netherlands, on Oct. 16, 2012, shows the painting 'Waterloo Bridge, London' by Claude Monet. A Romanian museum is analyzing ashes found in a stove to see if they are the remains of seven paintings by Picasso, Matisse, Monet and others that were stolen last year from the Netherlands, an official said Tuesday. Monet's 'Waterloo Bridge, London' was one of the stolen paintings.

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — A Romanian museum is analyzing ashes found in a stove to see if they are the remains of seven paintings by Picasso, Matisse, Monet and others that were stolen last year from the Netherlands, an official said Tuesday. Prosecutor spokeswoman Gabriela Chiru told The Associated Press that Romania’s National History Museum is examining the ashes found in the stove of Olga Dogaru. She is the mother of Radu Dogaru, one of three Romanian suspects charged with stealing the paintings from Rotterdam’s Kunsthal gallery in a brazen daytime heist. It was the biggest art theft in more than a decade in the Netherlands. The stolen works have an estimated value of tens of millions of dollars if they were

sold at auction. Dogaru told investigators she was scared for her son after he was arrested in January and buried the art in an abandoned house and then in a cemetery in the village of Caracliu. She said she later dug them up and burned them in February after police began searching the village for the stolen works. Chiru indicated that authorities did not necessarily believe Dogaru’s account. She said it could take months for the results of the tests to be known. Thieves broke in Oct. 16 through a rear emergency exit at the gallery in the Netherlands, grabbed the paintings off the wall and fled, all within two minutes. Police, who arrived less than five minutes after the break-in triggered an alarm, found noth-

ing but empty spaces on the walls, broken hanging wires and tire tracks in grass behind the gallery. The stolen paintings were: Pablo Picasso’s 1971 “Harlequin Head”; Claude Monet’s 1901 “Waterloo Bridge, London” and “Charing Cross Bridge, London”; Henri Matisse’s 1919 “Reading Girl in White and Yellow”; Paul Gauguin’s 1898 “Girl in Front of Open Window”; Meyer de Haan’s “Self-Portrait,” around 1890; and Lucian Freud’s 2002 work “Woman with Eyes Closed.” Radu Dogaru, the alleged ringleader, as well as the two other suspects remain in custody as investigators seek the paintings and other evidence. The stolen paintings came from the private Triton Foundation.
