Community college can be a good start OPINION II

Roswell Daily Record

BY MATT GARCIA THE UNITY CENTER

This week, high school seniors are completing their last few days of school and hopefully gearing up toward the next chapter in their lives. For some, it will be the start of summer college courses, which I think is a great choice. I hope that most seniors who plan to start college early will think about taking some courses offered at our local community college. For some who think “aw man, summer classes” take it from someone who was in a college prep program that it was great thing I did by going to summer classes. I got a head start on my college career. I knew when I was in high school that a big state university was not going to happen for me due to

congressional committee looking into the terrorist attack: 1) Why was security at the consulate so lax? 2) Why were repeated calls for more security disregarded? 3) Why was the U.S. military not more positioned and ready to pounce in that powder keg part of the world? 4) Why did the Obama administration contrive a duckand-dodge response in word and deed to this vicious terrorist act immediately after it happened? ABC News reported that retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Robert Lovell testified at the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform’s fourth hearing on the attack that he and other U.S. military officials never believed that it was related to the anti-Muslim video. He was stationed in Germany at the time of the attack. He

grades and financial reasons. I knew that I would have to settle for community college which didn’t sound as fun as going away to a bigger city and a bigger university. But for me, a smaller school and closer distance to home was a situation that I preferred. When I actually took the time and looked at it a financial view point, the cost of going to a community college made more sense because it was affordable and because the courses that were offered caught my attention. I always had this bad perception of community college. To me, it felt like I was a failure because I didn’t go to a large college that I wanted to attend. I had to settle for community college; but, in retrospect, it was probably the best choice I could have made. I realize now that you are

still going to the college, and learning just as much in a smaller setting. Going to a school with an enrollment that equals the population of the town that you live in is not going to make things better for you. If anything, it could make things a little bit more difficult. I only speak from my own experiences and not to take away for those people who prefer a larger setting when they decide to go college. I think that seniors who do not plan to go to college

told Congress that he and other commanders strategized about what to do and that they waited for commands to come from the State Department, but those orders never came. “There are accounts of time, space and capability, discussions of the question, ‘Could we have gotten there in time to make a difference?’” Lovell said. “The discussion is not could or could not of time, space and capability. The point is we should have tried.” Benghazi-gate remains one of the greatest and most tragic commentaries on the White House’s flagrant disregard for American human life for the sake of political expediency. I hope Gowdy’s committee gets to the bottom of what really happened in Benghazi and what roles the Obama administration

had in its cover-up. The truth lies in what Republicans cited by USA Today say: “The White House claimed the attack arose from a protest against an anti-Islam video to protect the president’s 2012 campaign message that alQaeda was in retreat.” President Barack Obama may repeatedly tout a decimation of the terrorist group’s leadership, but Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James Amos, with whom I traveled to Iraq in 2007 to visit our troops, told Business Insider: “We may think we are done with them. But they are not necessarily done with us. ... You can’t ignore (that part of) the world. ... You can’t turn your back on it.” And what about Hillary Clinton’s run for the presidency in 2016? She was sec-

Washington bureau chief of The New York Times. Scotty was at the top of his profession, writing a column three times a week that widely influenced what the capital thought and said, but he always took time for his young “clerks,” as he called them. He told them stories, promoted their work and offered them advice. We were already dating at the time, and we’re both

grateful that Steve — eventually — took seriously his mentor’s admonition to “marry that girl.” By the time Scotty died in 1995, at age 86, he had employed 26 clerks, and he wanted them to be the ushers and the pallbearers at his funeral. Not the presidents or prime ministers, the ambassadors or the senators he had known and interviewed, but the young people he had taught and

after they are done with high school should at least try and experience what community college has to offer by taking classes toward a major that is of interest and would be beneficial for you. For me, it was Human Services; and the majority of my classes were psychology courses. I did not think I was going to like the classes, but learning how people think and how they act was great because it made me enjoy my classes. In the marriage class that I took one year, I learned a lot from my follow classmates who were mainly women. I was the only male in the class, and I learned that men need to be more patient and be an emotional support rock for their partners. It also made me realize that men have a lot of responsibility for poor marriages.

retary of state during the attack. Could it be that the Benghazi documents, which would shed light on the real truths behind Benghazi, are still being withheld to help her presidential campaign and prospective appointment to the Oval Office? One thing is certain: Someone in the White House is continuing to heed the slimy advice of Rahm Emanuel, former White House chief of staff and now Al Capone-mayor of Chicago, who said, “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste.”

nurtured.

When Steve helped carry Scotty’s coffin out of the church, his mentor was speaking to him, imparting one last lesson. At the end, he was saying: This is what matters most. The lives you touch. The love you give. The ones you believe in.

For those who are attending a community college, I hope that you realize it is not as bad as it seems. You will still meet interesting people and get a great education. You will still be able to transfer to a bigger university if you choose to do that. My message to teens that don’t plan to go college is at least try it before you knock it because you might enjoy it. It gives you the chance to finish and graduate with a degree that will open the door to jobs asking for degrees in certain fields of work. It is a wise choice since more jobs are requiring education beyond high school for potential employees. You can contact our local community college, ENMURoswell, at 575-624-7000 and ask for New Student Relations or Advising. You can also go online at

LETTERS Dear Editor, I read and agree with Mr. Cloutier’s letter to the editor regarding the attack on Bobby Arnett. It is hard to believe that Mr. Bell limited his commentary to the candidate’s qualifications and was not motivated by a personal agenda. Becoming an Eagle Scout is not easy task and requires years of dedication from a boy who starts this journey at the age of 11. Most boys who join the Boy Scouts of America do not achieve the Eagle rank and Bobby Arnett did achieve this rank. The rank of Eagle Scout speaks for itself and prepares men to face multiple challenges throughout their lifetime. Both candidates for magistrate judge are very strong this year and I am personally glad that men with such conviction choose to help better our community,

Dear editor, I was disappointed this year when Party on the Pecos came around, and they chose to hold it at Cielo Grande, instead of at Calhoun Park. Calhoun Park has all those shade trees. It’s cooler, more artsy, has lots of space. There is a real sense of atmosphere at Calhoun. I don’t know why they had to move the event to another location. I did not attend and neither did a lot of people for the same reason. It’s the same when they hold the Chile Cheese festival. They used to have it on the courthouse lawn and it was beautiful. Shady, cool, it felt down-home and gave the city a vibrant “alive” feeling. Then, they started holding it at the civic center and you were stuck walking around on hot pavement. Horrible experience! I have not attended since. So, for the record, I hope they will put the venues back where they belong. Party o the Pecos at Calhoun and Chile Cheese at the courthouse where we can enjoy the shade.
