Julie Rosen, a Republican sponsoring the stadium bill, said legislative leaders heard that Los Angeles is an option, even if there was no explicit threat from the NFL. “There is no ultimatum, but we did clearly talk about LA. Rangers, Tigers ppd by rain

DETROIT (AP) — In his last four games, Mike Napoli has five homers, nine hits, seven runs and 10 RBIs. The Texas slugger couldn’t do any more damage Friday night. The Rangers and Detroit Tigers were postponed because of rain. “It’s something you can’t control,” Napoli said. “We’ll go do the split doubleheader tomorrow and start with game one and go from there.” Friday was supposed to be the second game of a four-game set at Comerica Park, but it was called after a 25-minute rain delay before a single pitch was thrown. The teams will play a day-night doubleheader Saturday. Rick Porcello (1-0) of Detroit will face Matt Harrison (2-0) of Texas in the day game. That was supposed to be the matchup Friday. On Saturday night, Detroit ace Justin Verlander (1-1) takes the mound against Neftali Feliz (1-0). Friday’s rainout means Texas reliever Scott Feldman will likely make a spot start Wednesday at home against the New York Yankees. Feldman has thrown only 2 1⁄3 innings this season. He pitched 1 1⁄3 innings Thursday night, when the Rangers routed Detroit 10-3 in the teams’ first meeting since the Rangers beat Detroit in six games in the 2011 AL championship series. “I was able to see some hitters up there, so that’s always nice to get into some games,” Feldman said. “I’d rather be pitching more, but I’m just getting my work in when I can.” Texas has won seven straight games and is off to a major league-best 11-2 start. Napoli has homered in four straight games, and he isn’t the only Ranger on a tear lately. Josh Hamilton is hitting .426 with five homers, and the starting rotation is 9-0. “They’re such a tremendously solid team in all areas — starting pitching, defense, bullpen, offense,” Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. “They’re a very good team, top to bottom. They have a lot of nice weapons, they have a lot of versatility. They’re very good — and we are, too.” The Rangers stole four bases Thursday, although they also ran into a couple outs early in the game. Craig Gentry stole second and tried to reach third when a throw bounded into left field. He was thrown out. “That’s the way we play — he just misjudged what he saw,” manager Ron Washington said. “I’m not going to blame him for misjudging what he saw because I don’t want him to get tentative.” The Tigers (9-4) acquired Prince Fielder in the offseason, hoping to build on last year’s ALCS appearance. Verlander will take the mound Saturday night, five days after throwing 131 pitches in a complete game victory at Kansas City. Feliz will try to outpitch Verlander. The Texas right-hander saved 72 games over the last two seasons, and he’s been sharp so far after moving to the rotation. Feliz has a 2.25 ERA after two starts this year. “He’s obviously not coming out there full barrel anymore, like you do when you’re coming in to close the game out. Starting the game, you’ve got to pace yourself,” Leyland said. “But he’s obviously got tremendous stuff.”

Indians closer fined $750 for ‘reckless’ tweet

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Cleveland Indians closer Chris Perez is considering appealing a $750 fine from Major League Baseball for a “reckless” message on his Twitter account after a bench-clearing scuffle last weekend in Kansas City. The pitcher said Friday he wants an explanation from MLB about what is and isn’t acceptable on Twitter, because he believes his post was far from egregious. “Obviously MLB did. It caught me off guard,” Perez said Friday in an interview with The Associated Press before Cleveland opened a weekend series at Oakland. “I can go through the union and I’m still waiting to hear back what my agent wants to do. It’s not really about the money, it’s about the principle. I don’t know if I’m the first one ever. I’m getting the most publicity out of it. I don’t want to just lie down and let them have full reign, because right now there are no guidelines, so how are we supposed to know? That’s what I want to get out of it. If I crossed the line, fine, but what’s the line?” After batters for both the Indians and Royals were hit by pitches, touching off two bench-clearing dustups last Saturday, Perez posted a message on his account, (at)chrisperez54, that said: “Huge team win tonight; time for a sweep to tell the Royals it’s not ‘Our Time’, it’s (hash)TribeTime. folks throughout the state that they would never leave. So it was good to hear from the NFL, and from a very prominent owner, that they do have the right to move or be sold.” Vikings officials, including owners Zygi and Mark Wilf, were not present at the meeting. Afterward, most who were in the room said the need to act is urgent. “There were no implied threats or any threats at all,” Goodell said. “What we talked about is the importance of creating a solution You hit us, we hit you. Period.” On Wednesday, Perez received a fine from Joe Garagiola Jr. in the commissioner’s office. He told Perez he “demonstrated a reckless disregard for the safety of the players on both clubs.” “I think he overreacted,” Perez said. “If I were to tweet and then I pitched on Sunday and hit somebody or we did, then that could be intent. That’s a little different. We had a normal game. The way we look at it, I think everything’s in the past. I don’t think the next time we play them there’s going to be a beanball war. We’ve been competing against each other, basically the same teams, for four years now. We both want to get to the same spot.” Perez isn’t sure Garagiola Jr. even saw the post, which the pitcher said “our fans, obviously they liked it, and the Kansas City fans hated it.” Cleveland won the game Saturday at Kansas City 11-9 in 10 innings and had won five of six entering the series with the Athletics. “It’s not like I called out a particular person. It wasn’t even meant toward the Royals,” Perez said. “It was more meant for my teammates that I know are on Twitter: ‘It was a great win, let’s go, let’s turn it into something,’ which we have.” Perez, who earned his fourth save Thursday, said he always abides by the Indians’ rules for Twitter, too: No tweets 30 minutes prior to the game or for an hour afterward, so not in the clubhouse. “There’s no need for it inside the locker room, which is fine. I totally agree with that,” he said. “With them pushing it — everywhere you look it’s hashtag whatever — so if they’re going to push it, of course the players are going to push the envelope a little bit sometimes. I’m not one to back away. I stand by what I said. I don’t really care. I really don’t think it was too bad. I mean, it’s the unwritten rule, but you can’t infer what I meant. It’s so vague. Nobody knows what my true intent was. Maybe I was talking about, ‘you hit our pitching staff, our hitters are going to come back and hit your pitching staff.’ In that series, we had a lot of hits.”

here that works for the team, that works for the community. This isn’t a new issue. It’s been discussed here for several years. I think the legislative leaders and the governor understand the time is now.” Dayton has pushed for a stadium deal for months, saying the state is at risk of losing the team just as it did the Lakers long ago. Moving the team is not permissible under league rules this year, but there’s always 2013. The Vikings have been contacted before

by two separate groups trying to lure a team and build a stadium in Los Angeles but have said, for now, they’re not interested in selling. Under the bill approved by the Senate committee, the Vikings would pay $427 million of the construction costs for the new stadium, which would be built on the Metrodome site in downtown Minneapolis. City and state taxpayers would be on the hook for the other $548 million, or 56 percent of the total cost.

Air Force’s Garland returns to Broncos

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Defensive tackle Ben Garland has rejoined the Denver Broncos for offseason workouts after getting an early release from his commitment to the U.S. Air Force. Garland was a training camp phenom two years ago, impressing the coaches with his work ethic and regularly outracing even quarterback Tim Tebow in post-practice wind sprints. He was placed on the reserve/military list after training camp in 2010 and began serving his five-year military commitment. He was serving at the Air Mobility Command, headquartered at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois east of St. Louis. Garland told The Associated Press he was allowed to return to the NFL through a program that allows servicemen to cut short their commitment after two years for a career that would benefit the Air Force in recruiting or public affairs. “I have saved my leave for two years so I could attend the offseason workouts,” Garland said. “I am humbled to have this opportunity and love being back in Colorado.” Garland totaled 115 tackles, 11 1⁄2 sacks and three forced fumbles in 39 games at the Air Force Academy.

Land dispute threatens Olympic course

SAO PAULO (AP) — A land dispute is threatening construction of the golf course for the 2016 Summer Games, when the sport is to be played at the Olympics for the first time since 1904. City officials might have to find a new site, meaning the project would start from scratch and possibly not be ready on time for test events in 2015. The city said in response to The Associated Press it just became aware of the situation Thursday and is “evaluating the measures it will take.” It was the first time the city officially recognized there could be an issue involving the land. It had been dismissing the prospect of a legal dispute and downplaying problems affecting the course. A final decision on who owns the golf course land could take months or several

Roswell Daily Record Dayton said the state leaders didn’t ask league officials to enhance the private contribution in the financing package. He said the NFL delegation ran through a league loan program that could give the team access to up to $200 million, but it has long been believed franchise owners had figured that money into their calculations. The closeness of the Senate committee’s vote demonstrated concerns still held by a number of lawmakers, with some senators raising

opposition to an expansion of gambling that’s part of the proposal’s funding package. Some also raised the larger issue of providing a public subsidy to benefit a wealthy football team owner. “I think some of us are just trying to represent the good wishes of many Minnesotans,” said Republican Sen. Roger Chamberlain, who voted against the bill. The Senate bill heads next to another committee of that chamber. Lawmakers are hoping to wrap up their session before the end of April.

years. There are ownership disputes throughout the posh Barra da Tijuca neighborhood, and few are resolved quickly. American designer Gil Hanse, who will build the course, told the AP on Thursday he had not yet been notified by city officials about the dispute. “If it was important, they would probably bring it up,” Hanse said by phone. “We’ve been selected to do that particular job and we feel comfortable with the time frame that we have.” Hanse said he was not worried, but acknowledged that any changes now could affect the project, which was based entirely on the land under dispute. “If they decided for whatever reason to make changes, you would have to start all over again,” he said. “Our design is specifically for that site. You can’t just put it someplace else.” The matter is in the hands of Brazil’s Higher Court of Justice. The lawyer from the company disputing the ownership, Elmway Participacoes, says that next week he will ask for the suspension of the city’s contracts with the other company that claimed to own the property before it came under the control of the city. Elmway has won a court battle that was later reversed, but company lawyer Sergio Antunes Lima Jr. says there is “more than enough” evidence available to prove the area belongs to his client. He said he doesn’t know whether his client would want to negotiate with the city if the land ownership eventually goes his way. “My client can do whatever he wants with the land, I don’t think it ever crossed his mind to build a golf course there,” Lima Jr. said. “Maybe he will want to negotiate with the city, but we don’t know yet.” Elmway Participacoes has been trying to claim ownership of the land for the past three years. The other alleged owner, entrepreneur Pasquale Mauro, has several properties in the region and has won many similar disputes. A message was left at the law office of Mauro’s lawyer, Roberta Mauro Medina Maia, but it was not immediately returned. Another legal dispute over one of Mauro’s lands caused problems for the Brazilian soccer federation a few years ago when it purchased an area from him to build the entity’s new headquarters. The delay caused by the dispute at the time made it impossible for the project to be completed before the 2014 World Cup. Barra is where most Olympic venues will be located in 2016. The course is to be built at the Reserva de Marapendi, about 3 miles from the athletes’ village and 4 miles from the main press center and the international broadcast center. The city currently has the right to build on the land, but at any time a judge could rule that work can’t be done until a final decision on the ownership is reached. “It’s a risk that the city, the Olympic committee and the constructors have to evaluate if it’s worth taking,” said Marcos Rolim Fernandes Fontes, a law professor at the renowned Getulio Vargas University in Sao Paulo. “They are probably very confident that they will win this battle.” The International Golf Federation said construction on the golf course is expected to start around October, and it should be ready for test events in the beginning of 2015. IGF Vice President Ty Votaw said the federation would not comment on the land dispute because it was a matter handled by the city. The International Olympic Committee and the Rio 2016 committee didn’t immediately answer requests for comment. Golf made its debut at the second modern Olympics in Paris in 1900 but was removed after the 1904 St. Louis Games. It was reinstated in a vote by the International Olympic Committee in 2009 and has a spot guaranteed in 2020, but a good impression in Rio will be critical in keeping the sport in

the games beyond that. Another IOC vote on adding or deleting sports is scheduled for 2017. Local organizers had considered using existing golf courses in Rio, but eventually decided to build a new one because the renovation projects would likely be too complex and expensive. The Rio 2016 committee wants the venue to become a legacy to the city and serve as a tool for bettering youngsters through sports. It will be used as a public facility after the 2016 Games.
