Preston Storm Water Scheme continues—and it’s heads together for the next stage! The £114m Ribble Estuary and Coastal Water Environmental Improvement Scheme is a 2 year scheme designed to ensure that Preston’s drainage and sewerage system is better designed to cope with large volumes of water such as storm water and flooding. A1TM was appointed as the Traffic Management provider for the programme last year and has forged a solid relationship with Hansons, KMI Water and United Utilities. The traffic management plan is complex and has changed a number of times due to project challenges along the way. When a sewer collapsed under one of main exit routes from city centre, repair work meant the need to tunnel across Fishergate Hill. Coupling their civil engineering knowledge with extensive traffic management experience, A1TM generated a number of different TM approaches to allow the replacement pipe to be constructed across the carriageway. Working together with the Council, United Utilities and KMI Water, the team were able to agree a unified and workable solution with the shared goals of safety and minimising disruption.

Brian Edwards, Principal Project Manager at United Utilities, explains:“This is engineering on a massive scale. Our assets, which we need to connect into, are generally within the highway. Therefore, much of our Traffic Management Plan has to be carefully planned well in advance of our work commencing. These plans are formulated in agreement with Lancashire County Council Highways following consultation with A1 Traffic Management. However, when we start constructing in the highway we still come across scores of utility services and old drainage culverts that are simply not marked on the charts. This requires us to act promptly to keep any disruption to motorists and other road users to a minimum. This is when our strong relationship built up with LCC Highways and A1 Traffic Management comes into its own. A1’s experience and professional approach to traffic management, coupled with their proactive approach, allows the project team to complete repairs on schedule and return the highway back to motorists as fast as possible.”

The tunnels programme continues into 2012.
