We hope that this directory will assist seniors and their caregivers in finding the programs, services and resources they need to maintain a high quality of life. A number of organizations are listed under each Topic and Subcategory. Please see the Table of Contents for more detail. A1AA has made every effort to compile a useful Senior Information Guide for residents of Del Norte and Humboldt Counties. The A1AA does not recommend or endorse any of the listings in this guide and does not warrant or guarantee any of the information or services provided by the organizations listed. They offer a wide variety of programs and opportunities to meet in a fun and enjoyable environment. Most offer meal programs along with many other kinds of activities designed to enhance a senior’s quality of life and well-being. Caregiving More than 44 million people care for an aging, disabled or seriously ill family member or friend. The job of caregiver is vitally important. It is a challenging situation that can lead to the caregiver suffering from stress, frustration, depression and financial issues related to the care of a loved one. Informal (unpaid) caregivers provide the majority of assistance that enables chronically ill disabled older adults to continue to live at home rather than in costly long term care centers. Professional caregivers are employed by an agency or are privately hired by individuals needing assistance with their daily activities of living. Respite care is short-term care, in or out of the home that provides a break from caregiving. CARE FOR YOURSELF Being a caregiver for someone you love is one of the greatest gifts you can give, but it can also be very stressful. As you care for your loved one, there are resources that can help and things you can do to ease the strain on your own health and well-being. Here are some ways to care for yourself while caring for your loved one: • Talk to your doctor if you feel depressed or anxious. Signs that you may need help include crying more, sleeping more or less than usual, changes in appetite, increase in feelings of anger and lack of interest in your regular activities. • Get support - Join a caregiver support group and find out about sources of support and help in your community. Reach out to family members, friends, neighbors, your place of worship, your Area 1 Agency on Aging or your workplace for help with caregiver tasks. • Realize that your health matters – it benefits everyone if you stay healthy and less stressed. Visit your doctor every year for a check-up and be sure to get a flu shot. • Be aware of the toll stress takes on your health. Try to find time for exercise, eating well, recreation, relaxation and getting enough sleeping. • Learn about the condition your loved one is facing and how it may affect his/ her physical and emotional state.

Caregiving
PRIVATE HIRE CAREGIVING There are a number of resources to help with hiring an in-home caregiver. Private hire caregivers advertise their services via classified ads in local newspapers, online sites (such as Craig’s list,) or with the A1AA caregiver registry, through Caregiver Services. When hired this way, the person hiring the caregiver becomes the employer of record. Some private hire caregivers may also choose to be employees of a business that specializes in providing in-home caregiving. A senior looking for a caregiver has a contract with the business and not the individual caregiver. Businesses vary according to their screening and training requirements. As of publication date, these businesses are not required to be licensed. Tips: • Be sure to compare employee screening, training (e.g. CPR, first aid), contract requirements and costs before signing a contract with a caregiver agency.

End of Life Resources This section contains resources to help plan for life’s end. Planning and preparing ahead of time can help to lighten the burden and enable individual wishes to be honored when the individual cannot speak for him or herself. Advance Health Care Directive In California, the Advanced Health Care Directive (AHCD) is used in place of a “living will” or Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care and provides the following important functions:
• It allows you to provide specific instructions to your doctor and hospital staff about the kinds of medical care and life-sustaining treatment you want to have in the event you are incapacitated and unable to speak for yourself, and • It allows you to appoint someone as your agent to carry out your wishes and to make medical care decisions on your behalf. Physician’s Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST) A second important document that allows seriously ill patients to specify in advance whether or not they want the following treatments: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), medical interventions and artificially administered nutrition. Power of Attorney for Finances Another important document is the Power of Attorney for Finances (DPOF) which allows you to choose someone you trust to handle your finances in the event you are not able to do so. The DPOF can take effect immediately upon signature, or it can take effect only if and when you become incapacitated. Please seek qualified legal assistance for more information.

☐ Gather together important documents such as your spouse’s social security number, death certificate (you will need copies which you can obtain from your funeral director) and any related estate forms (wills, trusts, etc.) ☐ Get statements and pay bills and taxes owed as soon as possible. ☐ If your spouse received social security, notify Social Security of the death since these benefits must stop. • What is the range of area that the system covers?
> Monitored systems provide a unit that is worn as a pendant or bracelet and allows for connection to a 24-hour emergency monitoring service
• What are the costs and start-up fees? (Medicare does not cover the cost of these systems.)
> No-fee system that has no monitoring can be pre-programmed to dial personal contacts when the SOS button is pushed (can include 911). > Mobile systems provide a monitored device similar to a small cell phone that uses GPS tracking technology where calls can be made away from the home base. To compare several alert systems, check the yellow pages under “Medical Alarms and Medical Alert Systems.” Make sure you understand how the alert system works and what its capabilities are and consider the following questions: • Is the unit activated without having to reach the phone?

RESIDENTIAL CARE FACILITIES Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly (RCFE) (also called Assisted Living Facilities, retirement homes, and board and care homes) are designed to provide care and supervision for people who are unable to live by themselves but do not need 24 hour nursing care.
