We can achieve Zero Hunger in our lifetimes. Halving hunger by 2015, as pledged in the Millennium Development Goals, is the first step.
While food is the most basic of human needs required for survival, on average, 1 in 8 people go to bed hungry each night.

The Spoon will be the symbol of the UN System at Expo 2015. The UN would like to use a spoon installation as the key symbol of the UN itinerary together with relevant infographics. The UN-Expo Team envisages a total of 18 spoon installations throughout the Expo site (one in each cluster, one in Pavilion 0, two at the main gate, and 6 in the other thematic areas and avenues), as shown in the map below. The Zero Hunger Game will be linked to the UN Itinerary and will be useful to encourage visitors to follow the itinerary.

UN-EXPO TEAM: The UN-Expo team welcomes this proposal and envisages a projection of the Zero Hunger concept on this space including the UN-Expo logo, which would be static, and a motion graphic, which would represent each of the 5 pillars and focus area of the Zero Hunger Challenge (ZHC). Requested from Expo: Exact dimensions of this space and where it would be located on the building, preferably in a highly visible space.

1. The Theatre of Memory
2. The tree of life
(excluded from your memorandum). It was understood that the tall library wall will contain drawers with objects and on this basis the UN-Expo team suggested that objects representing the pillars of the Zero Hunger Challenge could be included.
EXAMPLES
On the back of the giant library there will be a huge wall of monitors. On these monitors there will be already a loop of animation with approximately the following order: • 4 short movies (2’) on giant projections telling a story of hunting, fishing, harvesting, cultivating (narrative stories); • hundreds of short movies dealing with the relationship between man and nature (non narrative sequence).
EXAMPLES
WE SUGGEST that the UN gathers some hundreds of short movies (1’ each) through a worldwide video makers’ competition to address the ‘Zero Hunger’ concept. All the competing videos, after an artistic check by the Expo team in order to determine the aesthetic conformity with the other videos, may be shown on the single 700 monitors, alternated to the hundreds of short movies dealing with the relationship between man and nature stated above. Please note that these videos would be displayed mute. TO ACCOMPLISH THIS SOLUTION Expo requires: - to receive some months before the opening of the Expo all the movies in the format which will be required by the technical providers of the installation. Moreover WE SUGGEST to position in this hall the first of the two knowledge wells of the Pavilion Zero, displaying whichever content may be of interest to UN (for details please see on the bottom of this document).
UN-EXPO TEAM: The UN-Expo team proposes that several drawers could contain model books detailing “The right to food”, as listed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, each with a QR Code that links visitors to related information sources.
UN-EXPO TEAM: 1. This explanation of the loop of animation is new information for the UN-Expo team and it appears that only the 2-minute movies will have high visibility, while the hundreds of shorter 1-minute movies playing simultaneously on the individual monitors will serve only to produce a dramatic effect? Apart from reduced visibility, the message we hope to communicate through the series of 1-minute videos on the Zero Hunger Challenge could be lost if they are displayed alongside Expo’s videos dealing with the relationship between man and nature. In this case, we request the possibility to have a 2-minute movie dedicated to the UN theme for Expo and the full screen dedicated to the Zero Hunger Challenge for 1-minute intermittent intervals – this would include only Zero Hunger videos playing on individual monitors with a logo. 2. We would like to confirm if Expo’s 1-minute movies will be the result of the competition with Google/YouTube mentioned during our meetings in December? If the competition is still being organized with Google/YouTube, the UN system proposes to be the third partner and to be involved in the selection of videos falling under an additional category on the Zero Hunger Challenge (rather than establishing a separate competition).

3. Food: plants
4. Food, animals
In order to suggest the link between the UN system and preservation of biological biodiversity through important international tools such as Int. treaties of genetic food resources, WE SUGGEST devoting some graphic texts, near the big library of seeds, to the UN’s explanation of the importance and the outcomes of these treaties. TO ACCOMPLISH THIS SOLUTION Expo requires: - to receive by the end of June 2014 the text contents to be put in the graphics, and to be evaluated and adjusted by the artistic direction.
EXAMPLES
In order to suggest the link between the UN system and preservation of biodiversity through important international tools such as Code of Conduct on Fishery and Global Plan for genetic research on animals, WE SUGGEST devoting some graphic texts to UN explanation of the importance and the outcomes of these tools TO ACCOMPLISH THIS SOLUTION Expo requires: - to receive by the end of June 2014 the text contents to be put in the graphics, to be evaluated and adjusted by the artistic direction.
UN-EXPO TEAM: In order to be in harmony with the design or message of this room, the UN proposes to present our material in a similar way on additional hanging panels, similar to those displaying the sliced fruit and vegetables (using simple info graphics and style).

5. The Valley of Civilization
6. The room of farming tools.
(excluded from your memorandum). The UN-Expo team based their proposal on the basis of Expo’s plan to demonstrate sustainability by replanting trees to make up for the wood used throughout the Expo site. It was understood that the funds for this project would come from the auctioning of the 400 sqm table of prehistoric kauri forest wood set to take place after Expo 2015.
EXAMPLES
In this room a number of historic agricultural instruments will hung from the ceiling. WE SUGGEST that a link between historic tools and farming tools still used today in developing countries may be drawn using graphic texts on a wall of the hall. TO ACCOMPLISH THIS SOLUTION Expo requires: - to receive by the end of June 2014 the graphic text contents to be put in the scenic walls, to be evaluated and adjusted by the artistic direction
UN-EXPO TEAM: The UN system proposed to act as implementing partner and coordinate the planting of these trees using the funds from the auction. A simple plan for this project (graphics/text) could be presented beside the table in the Valley of Civilization as well as a small exhibit or graphic texts on the topic Forest/Food or non-wood forest products.

EXAMPLES
UN-EXPO TEAM: The team welcomes this proposal. The graphic text can be used to highlight also how these tools increase smallholder production and could also explore a modern farming tool such as mobile phone applications – how farmers now depend greatly on innovative mobile applications for information on planting, alerts for livestock diseases etc.

7. The room of containers
8. Industrialization
In order to establish a link between the historic vases and the UN-WFP project “Safe stoves”, WE SUGGEST to devote a part of the wall where the historic vases will be put (either 4 or 6 spots) to the display of the Safe stoves project and out-comes with graphic description and the reconstruction of a Safe stove (if possible depending on its dimensions). TO ACCOMPLISH THIS SOLUTION Expo requires: - to receive more info on the Safe stoves; - if positive, to provide by the end of June 2014 the graphic and text contents to be put in the scenic walls, to be evaluated and adjusted by the artistic direction.
EXAMPLES
(excluded from your memorandum) – we realize that little space is available in this room

9. The market
10. Effects of food loss and Waste
In this hall the effects of industrialization and globalization are shown. In order to represent the food price crisis and its impact on access to food, markets and other issues, WE SUGGEST that a video may be displayed on a totem-wall positioned along the wall of the hall, opposite to the stock exchange wall, describing issues on food market, food dumping, land grabbing, FAO food price, and so on, with added graphics and visual texts. Please note that this video have to be mute.
EXAMPLES
On the top corner of the hall a narrow cul-de-sac will display a montage of videos of catastrophes and natural disasters due to human actions affecting the natural balance of forces and the cohabitation of populations. WE SUGGEST that all the video footages might come from UN field projects worldwide, and that a graphic text might describe the consequences of human actions on the planet. TO ACCOMPLISH THIS SOLUTION Expo requires: - to receive by the end of September 2014 various video footages in the formats stated by the technical providers in charge of the installation.
TO ACCOMPLISH THIS SOLUTION Expo requires: - to receive a few months before any video that may be projected on the monitor, in the format which will be required by the technical providers of the installation
UN-EXPO TEAM: We are assessing the possibility of producing a video using existing UN material but this material would need to be edited (this will entail a cost).
EXAMPLES
UN-EXPO TEAM: Food loss and waste is one of the five pillars of the ZHC and therefore the UN would like to have a strong presence in this room: 1. In addition to the cul-de-sac with videos and graphic texts, we would like to have a presence at the garbage heap as there are very strong UN messages on food waste, which are not only related to climate change. This could be in the form of a tall transparent totem /thermometer where varying temperatures or levels list increasingly disturbing facts such as how one third of the food produced worldwide for human consumption is lost or wasted from farm to fork – around 1.3 billion tones. This would sit on the edge of the garbage heap. 2. The team welcomes the proposal to include UN footage in the cul-de-sac but we should discuss the content of this footage further as UN messages on natural disasters are not only related to climate change nor do they link the cause of such disasters to human actions in such a direct manner. 3. After consulting our technical experts, we would request Expo’s clarification as to why the effects of climate change are addressed in the same room as food loss and waste.

11. Landscapes
12. Best Practices
WE SUGGEST to position in this hall the second of the two knowledge wells of the Pavilion Zero, displaying whichever content may be of interest to UN (for details please see on the bottom of this document).
EXAMPLES
In order to send a final message on the ‘Zero hunger’ concept, WE SUGGEST that one additional film may be displayed in this hall, alternated to the 5 winning best practice movies. TO ACCOMPLISH THIS SOLUTION Expo requires: - a short production of high quality film (duration: 5’ maximum) directed by an internationally renowned director and produced with the highest standards in a narrative way. In this case UN has to share the script of the movie and have the chance to cooperate with the director in order to guarantee artistic conformity with the other 5 films in the hall.
UN-EXPO TEAM: The team already proposed that the photos of landscapes should include UNESCO biosphere reserves, or sites established by countries and recognized by UNESCO to promote sustainable development based on local community efforts and sound science (with UNESCO’s logo visible). The UN also envisages this room as the perfect space to enforce our slogan for Expo, “United for a Sustainable World”. The words could be displayed on the screens intermittently as the landscapes change (Please see below for feedback on wells).
EXAMPLES
42
UN-EXPO TEAM: 1. The team welcomes the idea the proposal for a fifth film on the Zero Hunger Challenge and following our meeting on 21 January, we have understood that budget is available for this activity and that a famous actor or narrator is required on our side. The team will look into the availability of a UN Goodwill Ambassador with DPI and refer back to you. 2. The UN-Expo team would also like to present a way for Expo visitors to join the Zero Hunger Challenge. This room could be the ideal place for several transparent and interactive screens which would link to Zero Hunger on social media. As visitors approach the exit of Pavilion 0 from the room of Best Practices, they could stop by one of the screens, take a photo of themselves at Expo, select “join the challenge”, and this photo along with the Expo logo, the UN-Expo logo and Expo and UN-Expo weblinks, would be posted directly to a Zero Hunger page (social media to be determined with organizers). The post would then be open to sharing on other social media.

WELLS
Rome, 30 JANUARY 2014
KNOWLEDGE WELLS
The UN-Expo Team is looking forward to receiving more information on wells
Given the opinions that have been shared in the last meeting on the 6th of December 2013, we kindly ask to receive a final decision from the UN about the presence of the wells. While they are our concepts, we believe this way of displaying must be totally agreed by UN. In this case, Expo will be in charge of the scenic construction and to set up the 2 wells, and will develop the necessary technology (multiscreen projection, touch surfaces, sensors for mobile devices interfaces, Apps architecture). Obviously, we will be totally dependent on the contents, which have to be provided by UN. In this case, the UN must engage a specific project officer UN with specific competences in IT, in order to be the unique interface with Expo project managers and third party technicians from our technological providers.
EXAMPLES
UN-EXPO TEAM: According to Expo data, only 0.5 % of visitors to Pavilion 0 (40 – 50,000 per day spending an average of 20 – 30 minutes in this area) will further explore themes encountered during Expo. Based on the statistics provided, this would mean that a mere total of 45 – 50,000 of the 20 million visitors would use the UN wells over the entire 6-month period. Furthermore, only visitors with an NFC smart phone will be able to download information directly to their phone. Given that most material in the main exhibition space can only be expressed in a visual and emotional way, it is true that the UN System will need to have a means to display a larger quantity of information, such a through digital presentations, but the UN would envisage that this information could be to be easily accessed by all interested visitors and that it would be produced in a cost-effective manner. The UN-Expo team therefore requests: 1. Confirmation that our analysis of the data is correct as if this is the case, it seems that the impact would be minimal. 2. If Expo could propose a more accessible or interactive outlet for this information, which could have a greater impact?

Rome, 30 JANUARY 2014
CONCLUSION FROM THE UN-EXPO TEAM We understand that the theme for Pavilion Zero is the relationship between humankind and nature and its effort to seek food and produce it through the exploitation of natural resources. While we realize that this concept perfectly links with three of the pillars of our theme, The Zero Hunger Challenge, namely pillar 3, 4 and 5, thus allowing us to address the issue of sustainability, on the other hand we feel that there is not enough space to directly link with the first two pillars and the broad topic of nutrition. Nutrition, in terms of access to adequate food, represents a major topic for many of the UN organizations who submitted proposals for Expo. We would therefore request you to provide the main concepts and plans for the other thematic areas as soon as possible so that we can identify the most relevant areas and activities to represent the theme of nutrition and other elements proposed by the UN agencies.
the ZERO HUNGER CHALLENGE United for a Sustainable World 100% access to adequate food all year round “Sufficient, safe and nutritious food must be accessible to all people, at all times” Zero stunted children less than 2 years “Child nutrition is a development priority” All food systems are sustainable “All food systems must be sustainable – we can produce more food while protecting biodiversity and the environment”
44
100% increase in smallholder productivity and income “Investing in smallholders, men and women alike, means investing in the future” Achieving zero loss or waste of food “We all have a role to play in eliminating food waste and loss” Women’s empowerment and gender equality. Women are key actors in the fight against hunger

FUTURE FOOD DISTRICT Exctract from the document sent to EXPO on 20.12.2013 This thematic area provides an opportunity to highlight current and future challenges to food production that are and will continue to affect primarily poor and marginalized population in developing countries – rural and urban – but will inevitably have a widespread impact on future generations. Challenges linked to environmental degradation, scarcity of resources and climate change will have an impact on the way we will produce food and what type of food we will produce/consume in the future. Only by increasing global efforts and investments in sustainable, nutrition sensitive agriculture and in ensuring access to food by all we will be able to have a future free of hunger and malnutrition. Future food will need to be produced through sustainable agricultural intensification in rural areas and there are several proposals received that could fit/ be combined in this thematic area. An example could be IFAD proposal on bioenergy from the food production cycle that addresses at the same time food security, poverty reduction, biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation. This could be combined with proposals from FAO on integrated food and energy systems and also from UNIDO on innovations in energy-saving technology in food value chains. An important aspect of proposals received for this thematic area was that focusing on the growing importance of urban agriculture in future food systems. In this area in particular we could feature a proposal combining submissions from UNEP, Bioversity International and FAO that would highlight (among the others): environmental benefits of urban agriculture, urban and peri-urban agriculture and forestry, cities as ‘green’ producers of food, biodiversity in cities. Other proposals that could be highlighted here are the ‘New crops from the forests’ and the ‘Edible insects and future food’ both submitted by FAO and an exhibition on nutritious content of different foods by WFP. For further information, please refer to the complete set of 22 UN agency proposals, submitted to the UN-Expo Steering Group on 8 October 2013

Countries: Eritrea, Mauritania, Palestinian territories, Senegal Topics
UN proposals
1. Definition of Arid Zones • Climatic categories • Penman-Monteith method (FAO) • Desertification and Soil Degradation • Climate Change and Geological Desertification • Sustainable Land Management & Soil Regenration • Reforestation (e.g. The Great Green Wall initiative) • Acacia for soil regeneration: Acacia Operation Project (Senegal) • Oasis: iconic ecosystem of the Arid Zones • Connotative elements of Hyper Arid Zones • Cultural aspects: places and customs • Primary role of women • Women and Desertification: Keita Project
• FAO: Forest Land in Arid Zones • UNCCD on Sustainable Land Management • It will be important to the CBD Secretariat to partner with the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) secretariat and to highlight the issues of agriculture and food in arid lands in the context of the United Nations Decade for Deserts and the Fight against Desertification (UNDDD). This, and the linkage with the UNDB, is key; as is the question of restoration of arid lands
2. Traditions and Innovation • Methods to collect Green Water • Soil shaping for water conservation (e.g. erg Oasis) • Case study: Vallerani System • Techniques to collect condensation (e.g. Dew Bank Bottle) • Watercone (desalinization) • Waterpyramid (desalinization) • Biomimicry/biomimesis • Sustainable energy • Solar bottle (purification) • Rituals related to food and hospitality
• Proposal from ILC: Many of the world’s drylands have been zones of rich food production by livestock keepers who have developed methods to use and manage natural resources in a sustainable manner. The ILC is working with its members to ensure the rights of pastoralists to the commons and to map the land they have traditionally used, often for centuries, which is increasingly coming under pressure from largescale land acquisitions, large scale conversion, population growth and climate change. The aim is to explain the value and ecological importance of pastoralist food productions systems, and the importance of securing common property rights to ensure their future sustainability.
ARID ZONES
3. Water • WASH: Water, Sanitation, Hygiene • Water and the MDGs • Access to water • Purification: condensation, desalinization • Water containers: Q-Drum, Dew Bank Bottle, Water Cone, Solar Bottle • The water we eat / The World is thirsty because it’s hungry • Water & MDG1: definition of food security • Traditional farming practices and microbe resources (Case study: Bio Desert) • UN Water Assessment Programme • Blue Water and Green Water • Water Footprint • Biodesert Research Project • Case study: Desert Fish Farming (e.g. Tilapia farming in Egypt) • Integration of Aquaculture and Agriculture • Energy for water and food
• UNICEF is the global lead agency for the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) • FAO – No food without water • FAO – desert fish farming
68
Missing topics: • Classification of arid zones • Crop production systems • Livestock production systems, especially pastoral and agro-pastoral systems • Food harvesting
• The proposed focus of UNICEF’s contribution to the Thematic Cluster of Agriculture and Nutrition in Arid Zones is evidence-based success stories in maternal and child nutrition, and nutrition security in emergencies. These would be case studies emanating from key UNICEF reports. Such evidence would demonstrate how countries can reduce malnutrition and its effects – including the key indicator of stunting – by investing in child nutrition, and suggest strategies for meeting funding gaps remaining in other countries grappling with malnutrition. • Global Nutrition Cluster • SUN Movement • REACH • Every Woman Every Child • Proposal from ILC: Many of the world’s drylands have been zones of rich food production by livestock keepers who have developed methods to use and manage natural resources in a sustainable manner. • WFP/RBAs – Agriculture and production – sustainable intensification, Natural Resource Management (NRM), crops and seeds

UN DAYS
115
116
Proposal submitted to Expo at the beginning of March 2014. What Expo could do:
What countries could do:
· Ceremony: Feedback required from Expo as to our proposal to hold a symbolic ceremony for all country commissioners at Expo, thus avoiding the complicated and costly procedures involved with moving the official UN ceremonies to Milan.
· Pavilion branding or promotion: The UN-Expo team would distribute an electronic UN Day promotional kit to countries containing print ready designs for t-shirts, caps, banners which could be displayed in the pavilions, graphics for promotional materials such as flyers, web and social media graphics. The country would take care of printing these materials themselves.
· Ticket branding: Promote the UN Day/related ceremony and UN itinerary by featuring an image/logo for the UN day in the lead up to the celebrations · Ticket sales: Expo would donate a portion of ticket sales on the UN Day to a selected project related to the theme of the UN Day · Restaurant areas: Branding for the UN Day in general Expo restaurant areas and donation of a percentage of food/beverage sales to an environmental, humanitarian or World Food Day related project · Promotional materials: Producing flyers or a gadget which could be distributed by Expo Volunteers
What Rai-Expo could do: · Rai-Expo as a communication platform for the UN days and events by providing the various Rai channels with content for distribution via TV, radio and web What Cascina Triulza could do:
· Expo Volunteers: Producing a UN Day t-shirt for Volunteers and briefing them on the meaning behind the UN Day
· The UN will invite CSOs in the Cascina Triulza to support the UN Days by focusing their exhibitions on matters related to UN Days in the lead up to and during the celebration of the UN Day. This would need to be confirmed and organized well in advance with the Fondazione Triulza.
· Web promotion: Information and branding for the UN Days, related ceremony and UN Itinerary in the lead up to, and on the day of the celebrations
What the UN will do:
· Edutainment programme: During World Food Day, a theatrical performance could be organized where the 5 pillars of the Zero Hunger Challenge come to life in an interesting way and demonstrate to visitors how it is possible to end hunger in our lifetimes, how this can only be achieved if we work together and how THEY can and need to be part of the solution/ Cinema sotto le stelle in the children’s area showing the series of 26 cartoons of the Young Leonardo developed by Rai Fiction on Sustainable Development issues, other possibilities? · Thematic areas: Thematic areas including Pavilion 0, the Biodiversity Park, Future Food District, Children’s area and even general eating areas could take on the UN-Expo colour or branding during UN Days. Related activities could also be arranged in thematic areas, for example on World Environment Day, a recycling exercise could be organised in thematic and restaurant areas, highlighting pillar 5 of the Zero Hunger Challenge - Achieving zero loss or waste of food – and linking waste to the fight against hunger. The Zero Hunger game could be heavily promoted for World Food Day etc. (concept note on Zero Hunger game to follow). Related activities for children could also be developed for the children’s area. · Video spot: A spot on each of the UN Days could be displayed at regular intervals on screens throughout the Expo site · UN-Expo logo on Pavilion 0 entrance wall: This could alternate according to the UN Day being celebrated
· Coordinate the events · Look into the attendance of UN Goodwill Ambassadors · Coordinate interviews or features with UN Goodwill Ambassadors to be used in video spot · Produce print ready designs for t-shirts and promotional items or graphics for Expo tickets, web and social media promotion · Produce graphic toolkits for countries · Produce a video spot to be displayed on screens throughout the Expo site · Develop concepts for related activities to be included in Expo Edutainment programme · Arrange briefings with the Volunteers · Develop concepts with Expo creative teams for related activities in the thematic endorsed by Expo – e.g. recycling exercise · Coordinate content for Rai-Expo

The Zero Hunger GAME
120
The Zero Hunger Challenge Game - Proposal
Concept
The Zero Hunger Game will have three objectives:
Given that the UN theme for Expo 2015 is based on a challenge – the Zero Hunger Challenge - the UN would like to put Expo’s visitors to the test and see if they can figure out how it is possible to put an end to hunger in their lifetime.
Define the Challenge: Expo visitors will understand each of the five pillars of the Zero Hunger Challenge and the key focus area for Expo – women’s empowerment and gender equality – and how each of these areas are interconnected i.e. we cannot solve the problem of feeding the world in a sustainable manner without working on each of the five or six areas. Educate: By looking at the characteristics of today’s food systems – what they are, in what way various elements are linked, how they work, how they will change in the future – visitors will understand that we are all actors in a food system - as consumers (making daily decisions), as producers, or in processing, transporting, or selling food. Engage: The Zero Hunger Challenge applies to everyone: all persons, governments, UN agencies, donors, businesses and societal organizations can be part of it. The Zero Hunger game will demonstrate to Expo’s visitor how simple decisions or actions in their daily life, such as reducing waste, can support the pillars of the Challenge.
121
The Zero Hunger Challenge Game and the UN ITINERARY The ZHC game will be useful to encourage and motivate Expo visitors to follow the UN Itinerary. The answers to the questions of the game will be available in the info-graphics and content at the UN spoon installations

The Zero Hunger Game PROPOSAL
The game is based on the concept that to end hunger the player must reach the objectives of all 5 pillars. The reference game is the puzzle game of 15 that will have 25 tiles. The game will be developed on the web. The player will have to sign up just as in a real game with scores and different levels. Once a level is completed, the player will have to answer correctly a question on the 5 pillars to move on to the next level. If the answer is incorrect the player will start again. To be a winner, starting from a score of 842 million (hungry in the world) the player has to reach a score of ZERO (hungry in the world). In case of difficulties, signing the declaration online or tweeting help complete a level or gain points. The player that reaches ZERO score is subject to the score of the time used. As a prize he/she receives a UNITED NATIONS passport (an application allows to insert the picture of the profile on a virtual passport). All passages are to be sharable on social media. The APP works in the same way. Furthermore it is possible to choose among several graphic themes to play with: picture or graphics. The game will be produced in a recyclable material. It will be the prize for those answering questions correctly or carrying out actions explained on a flyer that invites participants to follow the UN itinerary. On the back of the game there will be a qr code allowing to access a dedicated page with a video, lin ad app, the ZHC declaration, etc.
