In 8vo 21x14cm,contemporary full leather richly gilt, slightly rubbed, edges marbled, complete in five volumes 48p.510p.,[1]624p.[1]576p.[1],462p.[1],630p.,5 frontispieces (4 lithographed and one engraved), 4 folding maps and one engraved map in the text plus one facsimile letter in ottoman, as called for, internally very light scattered spotting in some places, otherwise clean and fine, overall a very good set. An important contemporary study on modern Greece. Pouqueville travels in Macedonia, Epirus and Thessaly had not previously published, as Morea and some islands tour had been edited in early 19th century. Pouqueville as French consul in Ioannina and Patras had the opportunity to travel widely in Greece at the eve of revolution and to gather invaluable information. Jaubert A.: “Voyage en Armenie et en Perse fait dans les annees 1805 et 1806”.Paris 1821 First edition. 8vo, pp.504.Contemporary leather over boards, slightly rubbed, head of spine cheeped, text clean. Complete with half title, frontispiece and 10 lithographed plates after Orlowski, Vernet and Preault, presenting early views of Eastern Anatolia and Persia and the separately published huge (92x42cm !! ) folded map of Asia Minor by Lapie. Overall very good. Jaubert was sent as Napoleon’s ambassador to Persia, in order to negotiate an alliance against England. To avoid the English cruisers, he had followed a fist time taken route through the Black sea and Armenia. He was amongst the first to visit all the Pontic coast and through Trebizond and Gumushane ( Argyroupolis ) he continued his travel to Armenia and Persia. (….).The big map by Lapie, the famous French Geographer of the time and chief of the Military Depot, was the best achieved in the first half of 19th century and it is often missing, but is present here.
