BIGGA reveals finalists of its annual awards presented at BTME 2024 The British & International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA) has revealed the finalists of the annual BIGGA Awards, with greenkeeping teams represented from across the golfing spectrum.

Each year BIGGA invites nominations from the golfing industry to recognise the achievements of its greenkeeping members, who play a vital role in the ongoing success of the sport.

The BIGGA Awards are divided into three categories, with the winners revealed at the BIGGA Celebration with Jacobsen. The event takes place on the opening evening of the BIGGA Turf Management Exhibition (BTME) in January 2024.

They reward the innovation of BIGGA members who are at the cutting edge of the profession and any BIGGA member within the UK, regardless of their golf facility’s size, age or reputation, can enter. The awards provide golf clubs with an opportunity to showcase their greenkeeping team’s talents and celebrate their achievements.

BIGGA CEO Jim Croxton said: “It has become something of a BIGGA tradition that we sign off the year by revealing the finalists of our annual awards and I couldn’t be prouder of this year’s line-up. The performance of a greenkeeping team can massively impact the fortunes of a golf club and these six finalists all show instances of greenkeepers possessing the

confidence and ability to take the lead and ensure their golf club’s ambitions are fulfilled.

Shape future of turf higher education The Sports Turf Trailblazer Group is seeking opinions relating to a proposed new Level 5 Sports Turf Technical Manager Apprenticeship with the option of including a Sports Turf Foundation Degree.

In October 2023, a new Level 3 Advanced Sports Turf Technician Apprenticeship was made available. This new progression route builds on the Level 2 Sports Turf Operatives or Level 2 Greenkeeping and supports those seeking to develop their

supervisory skills, knowledge and behaviours in sports turf.

Based on the role and duties of a sports turf manager, IFATE has now recognised that a continued progression route to a higher Level 5 apprenticeship qualification in sports turf may be needed.

To understand the knowledge, skills and behaviours for a Level 5 sports turf manager, IFATE has launched a survey to canvas industry opinion. The survey is looking for opinions on whether

it makes sense to utilise an existing Level 5 university sports turf qualification as an educational programme towards achieving a Level 5 Sports Turf Technical Manager apprenticeship. Specifically, is a Foundation Degree in Sports Turf Management the best approach? The newly developed recommended ‘duties’ of a Level 5 Sports Turf Technical Manager indicated a role that is based on science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

Turf is a longstanding STEMbased higher education sports turf qualification. Therefore, the existence of the foundation degree is potentially readymade to meet this need.

Over 200 sports turf professionals have completed the foundation degree since 2013 and just over 50 have progressed further and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree.

Capillary Wash Box solves flooding problems Dealing with rain events is a normal situation for most courses around the world. But knowing that heavy rain is likely to cause an actual flood on your property is a different matter entirely.

The club installed the Capillary Bunkers liner system, including the revolutionary Capillary Wash Box, which allows greens crews to pressure wash contaminated bunker sand and return it to its original condition. Having bunkers that he knows will drain water, on a site that is a mix of

rock, silt and red clay, is a big gain. But it’s the Wash Box, installed in all the bunkers that have a risk of flooding, that is really crucial.

“The Wash Box is a huge deal for us,” he says. “In the past, after a flood, we would skim our bunkers with flat shovels, but

there was always some muck left over. With the Wash Box, we can skim, then connect a hose to the irrigation system and blast out the rest of the contamination. It will make a big difference for us.”

Award-winning club uses a microbial programme from OAS Trench Bowling Club in Telford has recently celebrated its 100th anniversary and to top off this special year, has been judged The Best Kept Green in Shropshire 2023.

Greenkeeper David Evans and a team of volunteers have been preparing the green since 2014. “The green is in the best condition it has ever been, I want to thank Origin Amenity Solutions (OAS) for their support,” he explained. “In 2018 Symbio was recommended to me by the greenkeepers at Bowring Bowling Club in Wellington, Telford. They were using Symbio products, and the green was in

excellent condition. “I wanted to move away from synthetic fertilisers and pesticides and work with OAS to produce an integrated management plan. I also wanted to try to make cost savings and reduce the use of topdressing.”

David had several problem areas that he was looking to improve. “I wanted to reduce thatch, improve drainage, reduce dry patch, promote greater root development, sward density, and reduce, but ideally, prevent moss growth during the winter period.

I also wanted to improve the overall presentation and reduce the need to top-dress.”

Kubota’s latest generation of zero-turns The Ze-421 and Ze-481 are the latest additions to Kubota’s range of zero turn mowers, with the electric models not only meeting productivity requirements but also offering a higher level of operator comfort through reduced noise levels and less vibration during operation. The “heart” of the Ze is a 48V / 10kW battery which is located at the rear of the machine, pretty much where an

engine would sit. This battery has the capacity for over 15 000m² of mowing operation.

The Ze has a unique feature in that the battery pack can be quickly and easily removed and another fully charged battery fitted. A second battery and fitting trolley is available which will allow the operator to work continuously during the busy grass cutting season.

Recharging of the battery can be done from the charge connector on the Ze or independently away from the machine. A charger which is compatible with both European and UK domestic plugs is provided and a full battery recharge takes approximately 5 hours.

DTA delivers robust reliability Tasked with delivering reliability and efficiency for both contracting and self-drive hire, a Deep Tine Aerator (DTA) from GKB Machines has so far ticked every box for Cleveland Land Services in Teesside.

Purchased to replace another aerator in the summer of 2021, the robust versatility of the 2.1m DTA has seen it well used on a variety of projects and sports surfaces including football, racecourses and golf course fairways.

The DTA 210 combines a 2.1m working width and maximum working depth of up to 40cm (16”) making it an excellent solution for large and/or heavy compacted applications. One of a range of deep tine aerators from GKB, the DTA features hydraulic height adjustment and a range of tine options for

complete versatility – making it a popular choice with contractors.

Club selects Wiedenmann to mix and match aeration The award-winning Fortrose & Rosemarkie Golf Links, on the Black Isle, near Inverness, is steeped in both history and nature.

Last September, Head Greenkeeper George Paterson said goodbye to his 20-year-old Wiedenmann Terra XP6 deep aerator, trading it in for a new GXi8 HD. The deal was struck with John Morton, Regional Sales Manager at Wiedenmann UK’s Scottish dealer, Fairways GM, who sold him a Wiedenmann SL6 Terra Spike six years previously.

“This investment is about productivity,” said George,

“We’ve chosen the best tools that let us mix and match our approach to aeration. Speed is now more important than depth because of the shingly nature of our soils.

Terrain Aeration injects polymer Terrain Aeration has specialised in one-metre deep soil aeration to relieve compaction, panning, and waterlogging nationally for over 30 years.

While that takes care of the drainage and aeration when it’s very wet there remains the opposite problem of grass and tree roots not getting enough water in periods of drought.

It’s a problem addressed by the same machine, Terrain Aeration’s Terralift system, that aerates the soil at depth by releasing compressed air via its one-metre depth probe. As that fragments the soil to create fissures and cracks to allow drainage and aeration,

the probe can also inject waterstoring polymer. Once in place, the polymer will expand onehundred fold with rainwater or irrigation water which it stores for the turf or tree roots to take up as needed. It’s a one-way system, so the polymer does not take water from the roots.

Spreading the polymer on the surface is not practical, as when it rains it turns into a gel, making the area dangerous to walk and play on. Injecting it into the ground using the Terralift machine offers the best, most beneficial, and wholly cost-effective method, says the company.

The TG6507 IQ has a dual-clutch transmission that allows finger-tip gear changes without having to use a foot-operated clutch pedal, providing the operator with full control of the speed. The TH5 range of hydrostatic tractors are powered by either

The SF5 collecting mowers are powerful out-front collecting mowers with either 42hp or 49hp diesel engines. Available with rotary decks from 54” to 71” or a Muthing collecting flail, the SF5 features a turbine driven collection system and a 1300 litre high-tipping collector which may be emptied at any height up to 2.2m direct into skips, truck beds or trailers.

During autumn the mowers are excellent leaf collectors.

The new SXG327 mid-mount collecting mower now features a larger collecting system, up

The Raymo electric remotecontrol mower allows steep slopes and difficult to access areas to be cut whilst the operator controls the machine from a safe location. An Osca performance for synthetic surface maintenance

Get set for new synthetic standards with Verti-Top The understanding of the health and environmental issues associated with artificial surfaces, in particular micro-plastics and polymeric infill, is driving the industry towards a different specification of surface – in turn changing the requirements when it comes to maintenance.

In response, Redexim have updated a number of machines across their synthetic portfolio, including their popular Verti-Top, to ensure optimal performance on new pile heights and natural infills.

Lower pile height and a combination of sand and natural infill such as cork and pine is widely expected to become the industry standard over the next decade. Fields with this natural infill will need more attention than conventional SBR pitches due to their more mobile nature, and increased susceptibility to bacterial and airborne contamination. For maintenance, this means that the conventional approach involving regular brushing will no longer be sufficient to maintain surface performance and player safety.

Cleaning equipment such as the Verti-Top, previously considered a more ‘specialist’ tool, will therefore become a weekly usage item as grounds staff work more intensely to avoid the health risks associated with natural infill.

The Redexim Verti-Top utilises a powered rotary brush to sweep the carpet, lift the pile and extract the top 1-15mm of infill, along with any contaminants. The infill is passed over an oscillating sieve to separate any detritus while an integrated vacuum effectively removes smaller particulates such as dust and hair into a washable bag. The cleaned infill is then dropped and brushed back into the surface, leaving a clean, level and aesthetically pleasing finish.

Available in a 1.2m or 1.8m working width, the Verti-Top offers a complete cleaning system suitable for all types of synthetic carpet. It is also available in a dedicated Tow Behind format, utilising a 6.5hp engine, thereby increasing versatility and reducing weight by eliminating the requirement of a PTO. Redexim

Synthetic sports surfaces require a good maintenance programme in place from the very beginning.

Failure to maintain the surface could lead to issues such as compaction, loss of porosity, inconsistent playing characteristics, damaged fibres and contamination of the infill.

One machine that is being used by many groundstaff is the SISIS Osca tractor mounted powered oscillating brush, which is ideally suited to either a sand or rubber crumb surface.

A pair of oscillating brushes allows periodic aggressive brushing to be undertaken to
