Call for action to help women and girls feel safe in our parks

As part of the recent 2023 Love Parks Week, research revealed that 3.5 million women in the UK - around 13% - are put off using parks over fears about safety.

Across the country, more than 27,000 parks and green spaces – from small, community spaces to world-famous parks – provide a vital space that is free to access for people of all ages and backgrounds, a place to socialise, exercise and enjoy nature.

But for millions of women the fear of intimidation or violence in parks – from unwelcome remarks to sexual assault – or experience of it means they are less likely to use them and feel the benefits.

According to research carried out by YouGov on behalf of Keep Britain Tidy earlier this year

13% of women disagreed with the statement that they felt safe in their local park and among younger women aged 25-34, this figure rose to 40%.

Research already shows that women and girls do less exercise than men and boys so barriers such as safety fears compound the problem.

Keep Britain Tidy used Love Parks Week to call for action at every level so that all women and girls feel safe and confident to use their local green spaces.

It is encouraging local authorities and landowners to take on board the recommendations from a recent report to improve access and security.

Keep Britain Tidy has worked as part of the Safer Parks Consortium, which comprises of Leeds University, the Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin, West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Make Space for Girls, to produce in-depth guidance about how to make parks and public spaces safer and more accessible for women and girls. Recommendations include better lighting, toilet facilities, visible security, the organisation of dedicated events for women and greater staff presence.

The charity’s Chief Executive Allison Ogden-Newton OBE said: “We know that if women and girls feel unsafe, they are less likely to use, enjoy and benefit from our vital green spaces - and that will no doubt

have knock on effects on health and wellbeing.

“As the operator of the Green Flag Award for high-quality parks, we believe parks and play spaces should be designed and managed in a way that makes

them welcoming to women and girls. If our parks are safe for women and girls, they are safe for everyone.

“Good design and good management is key to creating green spaces that are inclusive,

Welcome...

The changing seasons always present a series of challenges for the industry as a whole and the unpredictability of the weather in recent years has certainly added to the issues.

As we welcome September and the on-set of autumnal changes, the need to understand and assess the wide range of products and services, expert guidance and high-qualit y training available becomes important.

It will be interesting, therefore, to see how well-supported the newcomer to the exhibition calendar –GroundsFest – is by the wider industry later this month. The ambitious event is aiming to provide something for just about everyone, from specialist groundscare machinery and products, to dedicated hard landscaping solutions and a spotlight on the play industry.

From product demonstrations to knowledge sharing and training seminars, visitors can expect a diverse array of exhibitors at a venue that mixes indoor display space and outdoor demonstration areas. It is also promising a different approach, aiming to create a festival feel to the traditional exhibition offering.

So, the big question is whether the industry is ready to support such an event? The answer will only become apparent at the end of the two-day event and how success is measured by organisers, exhibitors and visitors alike.

This month we have our regular Professional Groundscare supplement, which reflects many of the world-leading products and servi ces that will be on display at GroundsFest. We also take a look at the changing seasons and some of the solutions available for the move to Autumn and Winter.

There is also the usual mix of industry news, views, product launches and case studies.

The team from TSP Media will be exhibiting at GroundsFest and hope to see many of you in Warwickshire for this debut event.

SALTEX can announce the first round of headlining speakers at this year’s Learning LIVE and details on the themed stages, which are new for 2023.

SALTEX is known for the quality, range and breadth of professional development opportunities it provides through its industry-leading,

Urban focus for Tree of the Year candidates

An oak that survived a wartime bomb, the tree that shaded Queen Elizabeth I on summer picnics and one of the UK’s most famous elms are all in the running to be crowned Tree of the Year in the latest round of the competition organised by the Woodland Trust.

This year’s contest shines a spotlight on ancient trees in urban locations, with every shortlisted specimen able to be visited free of charge by the public.

“Ancient trees in towns and cities are vital for the health of nature, people and planet,” said Naomi Tilley, lead campaigner at the Woodland Trust.

“They give thousands of urban wildlife species essential life support, boost the UK’s biodiversity and bring countless health and wellbeing benefits to communities.

“But most ancient trees aren’t protected by law, and those

established Learning LIVE programme.

This year, over 20 presenters will speak across three stages in two days. It is the largest free live learning event for the sector with many visitors citing it as a key reason to attend the show.

Sarah Cunningham, director of commercial and events at the GMA, says: “Learning LIVE is a well-respected, highly anticipated highlight at SALTEX, known to be a fantastic way to boost knowledge in a wide range of topics. Here we provide a snapshot of some of the

headlining speakers and sessions available. It’s exciting and there is so much more to come!”

This year, the Main Stage will continue as it always has done to highlight the latest hot topics and issues, bringing visitors into the big conversations of the moment.

Day one of the show sees Lee Guerriero, pitch and technology specialist at UEFA, discuss UEFA’s 20242027 pitch strategy and on day two Tony Hanson and his fellow panellists from the Environment Agency and Anglian Water will cover

future water restrictions for golf greens and sports turf.

New for 2023 are themed stages and reflecting the need to place sustainability and environmental issues at the heart of the grounds maintenance sector’s thinking, the Eco Stage will do just that.

SALTEX is proud to introduce Dr Eric O’Donnell from SportsLabs to talk about recycling solutions for synthetic turf and a session from the Football Foundation on its pilot on the future of sustainable synthetic turf. The Spotlight Stage brings to the

fore the crowd-pullers into an ask the experts-style forum. Dr John Dempsey will bring his insights to the 2020-2023 independent turfgrass research update and non-pesticidal disease management sessions, while Aled Lewis will highlight Welsh FA’s Pitch Improvement Funding Strategy.

Sarah continues: “We have curated what we believe to be a well-rounded, industry representative programme of CPD-accredited seminars, which we will be able to share in full with visitors in due course.”

This year’s contenders are located in city parks, busy town centres and residential streets.

The winner will represent the UK in the European Tree of the Year competition.

Voting for the Woodland Trust’s 2023 Tree of the Year is open now until Sunday, 15 October.

This year’s winner will be announced on Thursday 19 October.

THE ULTIMATE MINI EXPERIENCE

Conventional, Short Tail, Micro and Mini Excavators

Husqvarna gives you an all-yearround advantage

Perfect for professional turf care in all weather conditions, Husqvarna CEORA is an ideal solution for winter groundscare maintenance.

Husqvarna has been the pioneer in helping millions of homeowners make the switch from manual mowers to robotic and Husqvarna recently took commercial turf care into the next era by offering a large-scale robotic solution that increases the quality of turf whilst reducing costs by approximately 30% compared with conventional commercial mowers.

With a capacity of 20,000–25,000m2 per day, CEORA creates healthier and more dense turf thanks to its unique cutting technology, low weight and opportunity to mow more frequently no matter the weather. Instead of manually operating the mower, professionals can simply use their smartphones to control how, when and where CEORA mows.

The performance and quality of cut is optimal with improved efficiency due to systematic mowing and less maintenance during the season, which is limited to changing blades and cleaning.

CEORA is robustly built and easy to manage even for somebody not used to robotic mowers. Greenkeepers can

expect CEORA to navigate with a precision of 2-3 cm, thanks to Husqvarna´s satellite navigation system, EPOS. It is possible to select individually defined areas on demand, with different schedules as well as height settings. The user keeps perfect control of all mowers in the fleet, through the Husqvarna Fleet Services application. CEORA™ is backed by Husqvarna´s maintenance and support program, UpCare, which provides fast repair and replacement services.

In addition to the cutting benefits, the autonomous, battery-powered mower is able to minimise noise pollution and reduce CO2 emissions by as much as 83% during the machine’s lifecycle compared to an equivalent diesel Husqvarna P 525DX ride-on mower.

CEORA has already been tested by several groundscare teams including schools, with them describing the new solution as a “no-brainer” and detailing that “the pressure is even greater in the winter when we can’t get out with big machinery to even keep on top of the cut. CEORA can cut the grass little and often, day and night and no matter the weather, meaning there is no downtime needed and we aren’t on the back foot at any point”.

Brett is known for their emphasis on sustainability and environmentally friendly designs. They aimed to create a captivating and eco-conscious oasis in a small urban space, utilising waste, and reclaimed materials. They envisioned a space of relaxation, socialisation, and play.

The studio showcased their designs at the highly anticipated RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival. With the garden show attracting approximately 140,000 visitors annually, Viriditas recognised the significance of choosing the right quarry to provide the necessary stone for their gabion walls. They opted for Brett Limestone; known for its versatility, durability, and natural beauty.

Seeking to incorporate roughhewn offcuts that would otherwise go to waste or be processed into aggregate, the decision to opt for Brett’s Limestone aligns perfectly with their commitment to sustainable practices.

Park project focuses on SuDS

An innovative water management system that will create a new wetland habitat - whilst also reducing flood risk in the city - is set for Sheffield’s Manor Fields Park.

The Sustainable Urban Drainage Scheme (SuDS) is designed to ease pressure on Sheffield’s watercourse and sewer network and is being delivered as part of plans to build 148 new homes in the city - at Harborough Rise and in and around Manor Park Avenue.

It will see the creation of an environment that will provide a home for a diverse range of plants and animals. It will

also incorporate new trails and walkways for park visitors to explore and enjoy.

The works are to be delivered by Sheffield Housing Company (SHC) - in partnership with the Council’s Parks and Flood Management teams - and The Green Estate Community Interest Company, which manages the park. A specialist contractor is to be appointed to deliver the groundworks.

The site compound is expected to be in situ by August, with the main works to begin in September 2023.

Green-tech supplies awardwinning ‘vertical forest’ hotel

The area around the North and East of Manchester city centre has been undergoing a renaissance over recent years, with exciting development and refurbishment taking place. One such scheme is the stunning new bio-diverse, cubist-style Leonardo Hotel.

Situated on the corner of Adair Street and Great Ancoats Street, the new 14-storey Leonardo Hotel replaced a weary looking 2-storey office building and adds a welcome link between the busy Piccadilly Station and the East Village Regeneration Zone.

Even before construction began, the scheme won a Society of Architects design award, one of the contributing factors undoubtedly being the 17 stunning Jenga-style tiered planting boxes: the architects, Stephenson Hamilton Risley Studio taking their inspiration from Milan’s Bosco Verticale (vertical forest).

Green-tech was invited to landscape architects Re-form’s offices in Beehive Mills back in 2019, to discuss options for the high-level planters.

A total of 48 cubic metres of lightweight roof soil was used for the 17 Jenga blocks, along with over 4,000 litres of lightweight

expanded clay aggregate. This was supplemented on the ground planting with over 400 tonnes of topsoil and subsoil, 2,000 litres of compost and 48 tonnes of pea gravel and decorative silvergrey gravel. The ground level landscaping incorporated a mix of trees in hard and soft, irrigated by a mix of Mona underground capillary tanks and Mona Relief perforated pipes, and supported by Green-tech strap anchors.

The trees in hard were finished off with permeable resin-bound grilles, and for the trees along the front, custom-made grilles, featuring laser-cut Piccadilly East branding and drainage slots.

These grilles are made from heavy-duty steel and finished by being hot-dip galvanised, then acid-etched and powder coated in a classic bronze finish, including the normally silver Piazza irrigation inlet. All the steel used in the production of these decorative grilles is recycled by our foundry in West Yorkshire.

To finish off the landscaping, over 200 square metres of Premium Weed Control matting and Ecomatt was supplied along with 2,000 litres of ornamental wood bark for ground cover.

ET Lander cruises through the streets of London

According to Jo Desborough, Head Gardener for The Bedford Estates, the Etesia ET Lander is a luxury electric utility vehicle which can be driven from site to site through the busy streets of London without worrying about the battery life.

The Estate comprises some 200 properties. It also includes two public garden squares, Russell Square and Bloomsbury Square and several private garden areas. These include Bedford Square, the only intact Georgian garden square in London.

The location of these gardens was a reason for choosing the ET Lander according to Jo. “We chose the Etesia ET Lander because it’s a vehicle that’s easier to drive on the roads.

“We have to go between our gardens and in order to do that, there are busy London roads in

between, so having a cab that’s fully enclosed helps us with the traffic. It’s more comfortable to ride in and the features that it offers are perfect for what we need.”

One hundred per cent electric, spacious, well-equipped and userfriendly, the ET Lander is built on a robust chassis and has an array of options including a three-way tipper bed with dual control from the fully fitted two-seater cab or by remote control when outside the vehicle.

With a length of just 3.72 meters, the ET Lander is very compact. Thanks to the power steering, the short turning radius of 4.40 meters and 360 ° visibility, it goes anywhere. The autonomy of the vehicle lasts for a full working day – without noise pollution, can transport loads of up to 940kgs and can also tow up to 750kgs. The latest models are fully N1 homologation compliant meaning

that the ET Landers are fully road legal along with being able to be used off road. They also feature lithium-ion batteries which ensures that the range of the ET Lander extends to 100km and have a charger system compatible with a standard type 2EV car charger. The battery-life on the ET Lander certainly doesn’t concern Jo and she also revealed that the team wouldn’t be without it.

“We’ve had the ET Lander since January, so we’ve been running it around our gardens for the last six months or so,” she explained. “The battery life has been really good, and we hardly ever have to charge it, so that’s very impressive. We use it to do lots of short journeys and you might expect that the batteries would run out maybe slightly quicker, but in fact, we find that they last several weeks for us.”

STIHL launches new portable power supply

STIHL has launched its first portable 230V power supply, providing professional users with a quiet, low maintenance and emission-free alternative to petrol-powered generators.

Weighing only 19.8kg and boasting a 3.6kW power output, the new PS 3000 offers a high power-to-weight ratio and is one of the most powerful portable power supply units in its weight class.

The PS 3000 can be used in a wide variety of applications from corded drills, site lighting, STIHL tools such as power washers and vacuums, as well as recharging STIHL batteries while out in the field. The high 2.1kWh energy content also ensures long working times for minimal disruption.

The new portable power supply produces a pure sine wave, meaning it generates the same electrical current produced by the grid, ensuring no difference in performance and that no electrical noise is generated.

In addition, a boost mode function temporarily increases the power output by up to 250% for tools with high initial starting currents.

Designed to operate in the toughest conditions, the PS 3000 features a sturdy frame for high protection levels, multiple handles for carrying comfort, is protected from dust and can even be used in wet weather conditions. STIHL

Group continues to invest in Kubota

This is part of a total planned investment in 188 Kubota machines in 2023.

FTH Hire Group, which has its head office in Farnborough, has purchased a combination of 1, 3 and 8 tonne models. Rob Watson, Marketing Manager at FTH Hire Group, commented: “We have a fantastic range of new excavators for hire and pride ourselves on supplying the latest and best equipment available for our customers.

Meeting their needs is vitally important and that is why we have a large fleet of Kubota machines, which are powerful and reliable to tackle the toughest tasks.

Designed to reduce the physical demands of work, the new DCU604 motorised wheelbarrow benefits from a 36V Brushless motor which is powered by two 18V LXT Li-ion batteries in series.

Thanks to Makita’s unique combination of motor power and battery technology, this versatile device can carry loads of up to 300kg and travel up to 7.2km (when used with 4x BL1860B 6.0Ah batteries).

To extend run times, the DCU604 holds four batteries – so once the

Lake reopened thanks to Otterbine

Otterbine’s Air Flo 3 underwater ‘bubbler’ diffused aeration system is the safe solution for Pinewood Scout Centre in Croydon, bringing its lake back to life and reopening it for water sports after a period of closure due to poor water quality.

When Jim Clements, site manager and scout leader, took on Pinewood Scout Centre last year he made it his mission to reform the site’s grounds, and fixing the lake that hosts the centre’s watersport activities was the first step. With the water quality of the lake being key to keeping the scouts safe, the Otterbine Air Flo 3 aerator was the ideal choice to get the lake back into action.

When it came time to find an aeration solution, Jim was after two key things: a system that is safe and can access the bottom of the lake to increase

circulation and oxygenation.

Otterbine ticked both boxes.

Otterbine’s Air Flo 3 is an underwater ‘bubbler’ diffused aeration system that is designed to aerate and circulate the water without disturbing its natural surroundings.

But best of all for Jim and the scouts at Pinewood, is that the diffuser requires no electricity or moving parts near the water which makes the system entirely safe for swimming and for all of the centre’s water based activities.

Since installing the Air Flo 3 system, Jim says: “The circulation and improved oxygenation of the water has massively improved the quality in terms of clarity. I think it’s the best it’s potentially ever been.”

Powerful blowers and brushes from Ventrac

Demonstrating its versatility, the Ventrac 4520 compact tractor has a couple of powerful blowers and brush attachment that are ideal for the landscaper, estate manager or contracting business. The Ventrac KA160 Power Blower features a vertical shaft design that delivers powerful, yet quiet performance.

The blower housing can be rotated 180 degrees in the horizontal axis allowing the operator to move debris in the desired direction without hindering operation. Two guide wheels maintain a consistent distance from the surface to maximise operational efficiency. This blower can be used to remove leaves, light snow, water and other debris.

The Ventrac ET202 Turbine blower makes quick work of any clean up job and is designed to move large volumes of air and is much quieter than conventional debris blowers. The powerful front discharge nozzle can be hydraulically rotated through 360

degrees from the operator’s seat enabling clean-up work to be done simply, quietly, and efficiently.

Group course manager at The Club Company Chris Brook says: “Considering the Ventrac tractor unit is less than 25hp, it is remarkably powerful and can go anywhere. The Power Blower attachment is excellent; unlike a lot of blowers that change the direction of the vortex through a vertical axis, in an up-andover action, this works in a 180° horizontal axis, which enables more control over the direction

of the material being dispersed. It’s great when blowing leaves from greens and, being out-front, visibility is second to none.”

Demonstrating the versatility of Ventrac, it’s possible to swap out the blowers and in less than a couple of minutes attach the KJ520 Narrow Broom, which is designed for sweeping and removal of material such as snow, leaves, dirt, light gravel, and even thatch. It is designed to fit narrow walkways 1.22 metres wide.

Aspen Fuel the perfect choice for a clean working environment

After choosing Aspen Fuel to power their business just six months after opening in 2017, Cain Markings now claim to be firm believers of the product and the benefits it brings to the operator, their machinery and the surrounding environment.

Fuelling a range of 2 and 4-stroke equipment for sports maintenance and line marking, owner Sam Cain explains how efficiency and reliability have improved saving the team time and reducing costly repair bills!

Young GMA Board Member Sam Cain founded Cain Markings alongside his parents six years ago, the three-strong team providing a range of

contract services to commercial customers in Hertfordshire and across the South East.

Being virtually free from sulphur, benzene and other solvents means Aspen Alkylate Fuel burns cleaner, reducing harmful emissions - important for many businesses, but a necessity for Sam who delivers a large number of contracts in schools and other enclosed environments. “The reduction in pollution and smell is a major plus and makes for a much more pleasant environment for the operator and those in and around the worksite.”

“We’re using Aspen in all of our petrol equipment including blowers, strimmers, hedge cutters

and some of our ride-on artificial turf equipment.” He continues, “The majority of our work is conducted between the spring and autumn which sometimes means our kit will spend periods of the year in storage. Because Aspen is ethanol-free, we find that we can get equipment out after being dormant for months and it will still start first-time.”

“That extends more generally to the overall health of our machines. We definitely see fewer engine-related issues and, when we do, as soon as we tell the mechanic we use Aspen they all-but eliminate it being a fuel problem.”

Course manager reports ease of maintenance with Attraxor

A Golf Course Manager from a deluxe golf and spa resort nestled in the scenic Cheshire countryside explains why they use Attraxor to keep their turf green, clear of Poa annua, and easily maintainable.

John Quinn, based at The Mere Golf Resort and Spa near Knutsford, has been using Attraxor for three seasons and has shared the benefits he’s seen on the golf course.

The Mere offers a deluxe fourstar hotel experience with a spa and a scenic 18-hole lakeside Championship Golf Course, encompassed by mature trees and extensive vegetation. The 81-room hotel is a popular retreat for avid golfers, with many posting their experience on Trip Advisor complimenting

the greens as being “smooth, fabulous, and well kept.”

John discussed the reasons he began to use Attraxor at The Mere: “After hearing lots of good stories about Attraxor, I decided to try it with the hope it would make the greens growth consistent and reduce clippings. We also wanted to suppress the growth of Poa annua seedheads to keep the greens smooth.”

Attraxor has been proven to regulate growth effectively as part of a well-managed turf strategy, meaning the hard work put into the upkeep of the grounds lasts longer. The active product within Attraxor is Prohexadione-calcium, which inhibits the gibberellic acid pathway, resulting in reduction of turf height and biomass.

Root growth is promoted through Attraxor to aid strength, whilst turf colour and quality are maintained.

John said: “I use Attraxor every 21 days on our greens and it has lowered the mowing maintenance of the greens and complemented our existing efforts of greens upkeep. During periods of high growth, we alternate days mowing and rolling to reduce plant stress. Attraxor gives me better control of growth rates.

“Throughout the 21-day period, a more uniform sward is possible each week. I’ve found that the Poa annua seedhead suppression qualities are superior to Trinexapac-ethyl products. If any seedheads do pop up, they are remarkably smaller and leave a much finer putting surface.”

John also discussed the improvement of quality he is seeing within the grass, saying: “We have been overseeding with creeping bentgrass for three years now, and in conjunction with our use of Attraxor, we have seen a much better uptake from our overseeding work!

“Introducing Attraxor to our maintenance regime has meant we spend less time mowing the greens. Having such good control over the growth rates means the option is always there to give the greens a break for a day without any mechanical input if we feel it would benefit. Attraxor has given

me so much control over the golf course, it has allowed for consistent and quality greens coverage with minimal growth which is smooth and develops at the same pace as all the other greens.”

Safe Weed Control by name and nature for contractors

As awareness of the hazards associated with glyphosate continues to grow across the globe, it is unsurprising that the number of commercial organisations switching to non-herbicidal weed control is on the rise.

Safe Weed Control, based on the outskirts of Auckland in New Zealand, was established to service vegetation clearance for a range of clients including those in environmentally sensitive areas, which they tackle with ease thanks to Foamstream. Owner of Safe Weed Control Matt Kirby was first introduced to Foamstream through his father, who was an early adopter of the technology, available from Weedingtech.

“I established Safe Weed Control four years ago after spotting a gap in the New Zealand market for clients who don’t want to be using chemical herbicides but aren’t necessarily sizeable enough to invest in their own Foamstream equipment” he explains. “It was the simplicity and effectiveness of the system really appealed to me.”

Foamstream kills unwanted vegetation including weeds, moss and algae using the precise application of hot water insulated by a biodegradable, organic, plant-based foam.

Delivered via a range of patented machinery, the retained heat from the water penetrates the

plant through the leaves and travels down the root, killing the weeds quickly and safely.

“We have an L12 and M1200 unit which we use on all of our jobs – everything from roads and verges, to boat ramps and retirement villages!

“The vast majority of our workload is in playgrounds and Foamstream is absolutely ideal for this purpose, preserving the aesthetic of the area with no harmful chemicals which children can potentially ingest.”

As well as killing the plant, Foamstream also sterilises surrounding seeds and spores, reducing future regrowth which

Training in Westermann machines for housing Association

In the heart of central and south west England, Bromford Housing stands as a centre of innovation and sustainable living, managing a staggering 40,000 homes with a dedicated focus on the wellbeing of its residents.

With a steadfast commitment to the environment and the “One Planet Living” principles, Bromford Housing’s journey toward a greener future led them to redefi ne their approach to moss and weed clearance.

Driven by the desire to reduce their chemical footprint and embrace eco-friendly solutions, Brian Mackay, the Landscaping Team Manager, highlighted their growing

need for environmentally conscious methods for their 50+ skilled landscapers and groundskeepers.

This call for change led them to look at Westermann, at a SALTEX show at the NEC, where innovation and environmentally friendly alternatives converged. A trip to the demo site in Sheffield opened up a world of possibilities. Here, the Bromford team performed application tests of Westermann’s machines, specifi cally designed to meet their unique challenges.

Recognising the benefits that Westermann’s range of

sweepers could offer, Bromford Housing placed an order that would radically change their landscape maintenance practices, reducing their chemical usage to near zero.

The order included the Westermann Ride-On Cleanmeleon 2, equipped with a 1000mm Wire Brush, catering to vast expanses and open spaces.

Additionally, they opted for four Westermann WR870 Pedestrian Moss Brushes, fi tted with an 870mm Wire Brush. These brushes were designed to handle both large and compact areas, ideal for spaces with limited access and constrained transport options.

ICL publishes Invasive Plants Guide

The models chosen are powered by premium Honda GX engines, designed to endure the rigors of heavy commercial use. However, their journey didn’t end thereacknowledging the importance of self-suffi ciency and optimal effi ciency, Bromford Housing collaborated with SPA to undergo comprehensive operator training.

In this undertaking, a comprehensive course was tailored to equip Bromford’s senior landscape team with the expertise needed to use and maintain the Westermann products effectively.

ICL has announced the launch of the Invasive Plants Guidea detailed and comprehensive resource for understanding and managing key invasive plants in the United Kingdom.

Encompassing over 150 pages, the Invasive Plants Guide provides crucial information about identifying, understanding, and sustainably managing 14 different types of invasive plants prevalent in the UK.

The varieties covered in the guide range from annuals such as Himalayan balsam and Smooth sowthistle to short-lived

perennials like Giant hogweed and Common ragwort, as well as long-lived perennials including Japanese knotweed and Bracken. Woody weeds and trees, such as Buddleja and Rhododendron, are also included.

The guide offers a thorough understanding of what constitutes an invasive plant and the problems they can pose. It delves into their growth and lifecycle, with a focus on how this knowledge can be applied for their sustainable control and management.

“The Invasives Plant Guide is a comprehensive resource that brings together information to aid in the identification, understanding, and sustainable management of invasive plants,” said Barry Browne, Landscape & Industrial Sales Manager from ICL.

“We believe that this guide will be an invaluable tool for all who are dealing with invasive species, from landscapers and gardeners to local authorities and land managers.”

New Overtake spring clean for turf weeds

The new herbicide, Overtake, from Syngenta gives the chance to clean out broad-leaved weeds in turf this spring.

Now available for golf course, sports turf management and amenity areas in the UK, the unique combination of two herbicide actives gives consistently reliable results in more variable spring conditions, against a wide spectrum of problematic weeds.

Furthermore, Syngenta application trials have shown optimum results with Overtake from treatment at a water volume of just 200 l/ha, giving significant savings in time and reduced interruption in play, compared to herbicide treatments typically applied at 400 l/ha or more.

Syngenta Technical Manager, Sean Loakes, reported Overtake has shown outstanding turf safety in more than 70 trials across nine countries.

Trials at STRI recorded no adverse phytotoxic effects across 19 cultivars of all key coolseason turf grass species, even at more than double recommended application rate.

“Weeds compete with turf plants for light, moisture and nutrients. Removing weed competition early in the season ensures more of the inputs you put on are better utilised for turf growth – creating stronger more resilient turf and better playing conditions,” advocated Sean.

Overtake targets most of the problematic broad-leaved weeds in turf grass. Early treatment in the spring enables vigorous turf recovery to fi ll gaps and minimise risk of weed reinvasion. Overtake is a Syngenta optimised formulation to target broadleaved weeds.

To get the best from Overtake, Sean advised application in spring when weeds are actively growing and the leaves are dry. Treatment should be made at a rate of 2.0 l/ha, applied in 200 l/ha water volume, using XC025 or XC04 nozzles to better target the leaf area and minimise risk of drift. Turf should ideally be left for three days after application before mowing.

Overtake is approved for use in the UK on amenity grassland, managed amenity turf and lawns.

Padded straps now available on Cooper Pegler knapsacks

“This is a global initiative,” says Allan Wainwright, HozelockExel’s UK Sales Manager, “which aims to make our knapsack brands fully inclusive for all spray operatives.”

Weed removal without chemical

Bema’s latest sweeper - the Groby Light – which allows easy and effective weed removal without using chemicals, is proving extremely popular with local authorities, municipalities and their contractors.

The Groby Light can be fitted to a range of small carrier vehicles and offers a broad choice of brushes, from steel flat wire to PPN.

“There is growing pressure to remove weeds from the public realm without using chemicals, as they can pose of health risk to people, flora and fauna,” says Philip Bryant of Bema Sweepers UK.

Professional knapsack specialists

Cooper Pegler have introduced cushioned straps on more of its models to heighten operator comfort and limit body strain for operators.

Many of the go-to knapsacks across the popular brand include ergonomically tailored harnesses to channel loading forces in a way that limits stresses on the body.

The latest advance from manufacturer Hozelock-Exel, which follows extensive trialling, further enhances operator safety and protection to include cushioned strapping on Cooper Pegler’s Classic and Series 2000 knapsack models.

The cushioned strapping is introduced at a time when more sports venues and amenity sites are reducing the quantity of treatment liquids they apply in a bid to improve their green credentials.

Golf course greens teams report they are using knapsacks increasingly for spot-spray weed control, a practice that cuts the quantity of liquid applied significantly.

More knapsack hand spraying raises the importance of operator comfort to new levels, therefore.

“Those who spend a full day knapsack spraying will find the new cushioned straps more comfortable,” Allan adds, “reducing the stresses and strains possible on the body during extensive sessions in the field.”

Tackling the toughest tasks

The machine also features plasticcoated, steel flat wire tufts to remove weeds from gutters, joints and other hard-to-reach places.

“People who have attended recent demonstrations have all been impressed with the Bema Groby Light’s excellent features, its reliable and easy operation, and how it removes stubborn dirt and weeds.”

Creating Gravelrings that save time and money

It’s a standard response that customers can’t afford to have a gravel driveway laid given that gravel grids are typically viewed as an extra expense.

Gravel experts Beauxfort wanted to challenge that thinking by providing an innovative Gravelrings product that saves end customers time and money. Gravelrings reduce the time spent preparing the ground and the need to excavate the soil as deep with a 25mm grid depth. The strain on profit margins lessens because the panels need less stone to fill them than alternative systems.

Furthermore, installation is made faster by the grids arriving at the site in 1sqm tiles with a firm clipping mechanism to join them together.

Alan Duguid Beauxfort’s Business Development Manager states: “With materials

skyrocketing it means a muchneeded opportunity to claw back margin on labour, Contractors need more options to surprise and delight their customers now more than ever.”

Gravelrings was designed to lock into the system to prevent gravel migration, even on sloped landscapes. This ensures gravel cannot mine its way beneath the panels because the one-piece moulded mesh base keeps the grids from lifting.

In addition, air circulates throughout the system breaking down silts and fines to stop weeds from growing.

Customers need certainty in these uncertain economic times, beginning with the product and innovation available on the market.

The SISIS Osca – perfect for synthetic surface maintenance

Synthetic sports surfaces require a good maintenance programme in place from the very beginning.

Failure to maintain the surface could lead to issues such as compaction, loss of porosity, inconsistent playing characteristics, damaged fibres and contamination of the infill.

One machine that is being used by many groundstaff is the SISIS Osca tractor mounted powered oscillating brush, which is ideally suited to either a sand or rubber crumb surface.

A pair of oscillating brushes allows periodic aggressive brushing to be undertaken to

agitate the upper infill level helping reduce compaction, encourage the fibres to stand upright and reduce the risk of contamination and surface water.

It can also be used for regular light brushing, helping to stand the fibres up, move the infill around, creating a level surface and minimise the threat of moss and algae.

It uses fewer passes than a conventional drag brush, and has the option of adding a further 1.8m wide brush to the system which helps to enhance the final finish.

Once Warwick School had decided to invest in a new

synthetic pitch, Grounds Manager Duncan Toon felt that the SISIS Osca was the only machine that could maintain the new surface effectively and truly justify the major investment decision: “With the investment which has been made into the synthetic surface, I felt that we needed to have the best equipment to maintain it, and for me, the Osca was essential.

“It is clear to see that the de-compaction this machine achieves is simply on a different level. Since we have been using it the pitch has significantly improved.

Another user full of praise

is Andy Jackson, grounds manager at Stoke City FC, who has reported ‘phenomenal’ results since incorporating the SISIS Osca into his synthetic surface maintenance programme.

“Getting the right equipment for all the different textured pitches we have here is big task, and it’s key to how we go about our business,” says Andy. “I wanted a machine that was going to be effective and quick but to get a machine to do those two things I felt would be a hard task.

“The Oscillating brushes are the best feature because they get rid of any compaction

passion for the profession

problems and provide a fantastic finish.

“Players at all levels, from seven year olds up to the first team, play on these pitches, so for me it is just important to have the synthetic surfaces as

well presented as the natural pitches. The results have been phenomenal and personally I think the Osca ticks all the boxes in getting synthetic turf to a level where it needs to be.”

Speed-Clean provides fast clearance of surface debris

The Speed-Clean from Redexim is a land-driven surface sweeper which efficiently lifts and separates infill and contaminants in a single pass. It is important that surface cleaning takes place as soon as any material is present on the top of the carpet.

If left, allowing the debris to be broken down and trodden into the carpet, bigger problems with drainage and compromised play performance and safety are likely to follow.

The paddle brush system of the Speed-Clean effectively

lifts the infill from the surface, where detritus is separated via an oscillating sieve and collected in bins on the rear of the unit. The cleaned infill is then returned to the surface, restoring a carpets permeability and playability.

Available in 1m and 1.7m working widths to suit facilities of all sizes, the machine also features integrated tines to aid decompaction while the rear brush preens the surface to leave an aesthetically pleasing finish.

The powerful front discharge nozzle can be hydraulically

rotated through 360 degrees from the operator’s seat enabling clean-up work to be done simply, quietly, and efficiently.

Group course manager at The Club Company Chris Brook says: “Considering the Ventrac tractor unit is less than 25hp, it

is remarkably powerful and can go anywhere. The Power Blower attachment is excellent; unlike a lot of blowers that change the direction of the vortex through a vertical axis, in an up-andover action, this works in a 180° horizontal axis, which enables more control over the direction

SCH cleans up with robust machine

Since 1986, SCH Supplies have been dedicated to building machinery specifically for groundskeepers.

Their product range fits perfectly between domestic garden products and heavy industrial farm machinery.

The TS98 lawn sweeper collector collects leaves, cut grass and lawn debris. It is robust in construction to withstand prolonged heavy use.

A differential mechanism allows the sweeper to be manoeuvred in tight corners without the wheels “scuffing”. The differential mechanism also allows both

Precision clean-up from Turfco

Turfco’s Torrent 2 is powerful all-purpose blower, available in tow-behind or tractormounted pto-driven formats and delivering unprecedented control over air speed, air direction, noise management and fuel consumption.

This is a precision clean-up tool that can used year-round taking golf courses or grounds to a new level.

Built on a heavy-duty frame with a rugged draw bar and adjustable hitch the Torrent 2 is designed for durability. The one-piece nozzle is made of impact resistant, roto-moulded polyethylene. The enclosed deck dramatically reduces debris pickup from below the blower, decreasing wear on the turbine and minimising overall dust and debris around the operator.

The wireless controller technology allows the operator to dial in the exact nozzle direction for optimal performance with fast, 360-degree nozzle rotation. Multiple air speed settings make it quick and easy to increase or decrease blowing force, while a dedicated button allows the operator to idle down when people are near. The controller also features a shutdown switch that stops the engine at the press of a button.

An optional auxiliary control kit is available should the wireless controller be lost or damaged. The operator simply flips a switch from wireless to auxiliary and can then control the machine’s speed and direction.

Less thatch as club secures Terra Rake

Linlithgow Golf Club has taken delivery of a 2.3 m width Wiedenmann Terra Rake, from Wiedenmann UK’s Scottish dealer, Fairways GM at Kinross. Course Manager, Phil Montgomery had been eyeing one up for a while.

“The rake pulls up a terrific amount of thatch,” he explains “Take the day it arrived; the difference it made to the practice ground in one session was amazing: just so much. Over the next few years, it will enhance the entire site.

“We plan to attack the moss there head-on with the Terra Rake on a regular basis. Even though we rota-knife and spike them, until now the surface tension is just too much.

Beyond the fairways, Phil has an ever-growing list of duties lined up for his new kit addition which means it will be in use all year-round.

“I like the versatility of the rake; it’s great value. I’ve seen it take on many different jobs on YouTube and Twitter. It will be good for standing the grass up prior to cutting, we will use it for presentation and once our new tractor- mounted blower arrives, we will use it for rough management, thinning out and tidying up.”

It’s more than 25 years since Owner Simon Hutton purchased his first refurbished Trilo and, more than two decades on, that SG700 continues to deliver reliable service alongside more than 20 other vacuum units from across the Trilo range.

Simon explains: “Over the businesses we have an SG700, an SG1165, four SG1100’s, 11 SG400’s, an S3, two S4’s and an S12 – all purchased at

different times when workload has demanded the investment.

“The higher capacity machines such as the S12 and SG1100’s are used primarily for grass collection and large scale clearance work such as postconcert clean-ups.

The mid-sized and smaller units including the SG700 with its 7m3 capacity are used for contracting and contract hire – vacuuming after koroing, or after scarifying cricket outfields for example.

“We see a big spike in hire requests from sports venues, golf clubs and local authorities when the leaves start to drop.

“The Trilo range being so straight forward to set-up is ideal to go out in those instances, where multiple operators can get stuck in,

clear large areas and achieve a great finish.”

Brushcutting on slopes made easy with Ventrac

The Tough Cut deck attachment for the Ventrac 4520 all-terrain compact tractor has been specifically designed for mowing high grass, thick weeds and heavy brush.

Able to work on slopes of up to 30 degrees, it can save huge amounts of man-hours when compared to strimming.

A large front opening directs material into the deck where three heavy-duty blades counter rotate to cut and deposit waste evenly without windrowing. The blades are sharp on both sides so they can be used on right or left-hand spindles, allowing for extended blade life. Capable of tackling saplings up to 2.54 mm (1 inch) in diameter, the Tough

Etesia keeps Higher Wiscombe beautiful

A new Etesia Attila 98X ride-on brushcutter is helping the luxurious Higher Wiscombe farm and holiday cottages live up to its glowing reputation.

Higher Wiscombe is a 52-acre farm with a cluster of four exceptional holiday cottages in its centre. It is located in the heart of the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is close to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site and the South West Coast Path.

Alistair and Lorna Handyside are the owners of Higher Wiscombe and they work tirelessly to maintain their award-winning five-star gold cottages. The land and green spaces are equally as important as the accommodation, and no stone is left unturned when it comes to maintaining them. Alistair has recently purchased a new Etesia Attila 98X ride-on brushcutter and his decision to purchase it was based

on the success of his previous mower, which also happened to be an Etesia.

Etesia’s Attila 98X ride-on brushcutter is reliable, efficient, comfortable, and safe. The output, combined with 4-wheel-drive and performance makes it ideal for some of the toughest jobs.

The 98X has a 98cm cutting width for more efficient working while eight cutting heights are available between 50mm to 120mm, with one transport position, which is easily adjusted with a centralised lever. It can be used on slopes up to 30% and its strengthened structure welded tubular chassis offers its operators a better driving position. Furthermore, the electric start offers a high comfort level, rack and pinion steering, plus hydrostatic drive. Special attention has also been paid to sound and vibration levels

to reduce them to a very low level – making it ideal for public areas.

Alistair explained how he uses the Attila 98X. “There are three types of mowing we carry out. One is the paths around the edges of the field, so that our guests can easily see the perimeter and take their dogs for a walk. The second areas are the pasture which we try and keep tidy.

“The third area is all about brush clearance, which we do twice a year. We’ll go in and make sure the brush hasn’t intruded into the field boundaries or we’ll use it to clear an area for some replanting.

“The best bit about this piece of kit is its reliability,” continued Alistair. “I’m saying that from someone who’s had an Etesia for 16 years and never had a problem.”

Cut makes short work out of overgrown thickets. It has three cutting heights: 76 mm, 92 mm and 108 mm. Easy servicing of belts and pulleys is provided by the hinged and removable cover, while the flip-up deck provides easy access for cleaning and changing blades.

Peter Pattenden, the Golf Courses and Estates Manager at Carden Park, is a 30-year veteran in the industry having begun his career at Gleneagles back in 1991. He is an enthusiastic advocate of the Tough Cut deck.

“We manage over 1400 acres at Carden Park including the two championship golf courses, the owner’s house and grounds and the tenant farms dotted

around the estate. Every piece of equipment we buy has to earn its keep and this Ventrac certainly falls into this category.

“The Tough Cut deck is superb as it can cut through saplings, bracken and gorse, helping to maintain the areas that consume man-hours. We do a lot of woodland management, removing trees and scrub, and this means travelling across fairways to reach particular areas. The light footprint of the Ventrac, which I believe is just 6 psi, allows us to go in with either the Stump Grinder attachment or the Tough Cut deck to maintain these sites, without leaving wheel marks across the courses.”

STIHL continues to invest in cordless range

STIHL has extended its range of cordless brushcutters with the launch of the RGA 140, the first tool in the STIHL AP System dedicated for use with the STIHL RG cutting head, enabling maintenance workers, landscapers and groundskeepers to cut weeds and grass with ease in sensitive areas.

Taking inspiration from the popular FSA 135 brushcutter and RG gearbox, the new RGA 140 features oscillating disc blades with low rotational energy, enabling low-spin mowing on hard surfaces and around fragile obstacles such as cars or greenhouses. Not only does this reduce the risk of flicking stones but, due to its low spin mowing and tailored RPM, the new brushcutter also reduces the safety distances to 3m from objects and 5m from people, making the tool ideal for use in built-up areas.

The RGA 140 also boasts a 230mm cutting diameter and ergonomic controls. Featuring a

this process quick and easy to complete and there are no cutter deck belts to adjust or replace making the maintenance and cleaning of the mower easier and quicker and more power is delivered direct to the blades for extra efficiency.

With Canycom ride-on brushcutters, steep slopes can be mown conveniently and economically and offer the operator comfort with an adjustable steering wheel and seat.

quiet EC motor with three-speed settings and a clear LED display, users can continuously regulate the speed in order to work as efficiently as possible.

In addition, the new brushcutter utilises a bike handle for well-balanced operation, offering comfortable use for professionals, particularly over long periods of time.

Part of the AP System, the RGA 140 is compatible with STIHL’s Smart Connector 2 A and features a mounting point on the tool housing, facilitating effective and timely maintenance, as well as increased productivity and reduced downtime.

This model provides professionals with a long service life thanks to its sturdy motor housing, mesh air filter, and robust gearbox. Working time with the recommended AP 300 S battery is up to 100 minutes.

Get out and mow in the wet

Let’s face it; it’s so frustrating knowing that the grass needs a cut or there’s maintenance jobs to be done, but the weather’s against you.

However, owners of Ventrac compact tractors don’t have this issue as their highly versatile machine with its numerous attachments can get out and work, even in the most inclement weather.

This is due to machine’s unique dual-wheel configuration (eight tyres in total) exerting just 6 psi ground pressure on the turf.

This means that it’s one of very few machines that can operate on a golf fairway or sports field during, or shortly after, a deluge.

Worm casts are the bane of a turf managers life during the autumn and winter months, but the Ventrac, with its selection of nine mowing decks and other attachments, can get out and get the job done.

Turfco helps winter maintenance programmes

Ideal for winter maintenance programmes Turfco’s range of broadcast topdressers, drop spreaders, blowers, overseeders and edgers, can help the busy turf manager.

“Our WideSpin topdressers reduce the number of passes and compaction to complete the job, while ensuring an even distribution of material, even in wet conditions,” says John Moore, Turfco’s European Sales Manager.

“Our Torrent 2 powerful allpurpose blower has been designed with signifi cant input from turf managers. Available in tow-behind or tractormounted pto-driven formats, it delivers unprecedented control over air speed, air direction, noise management and fuel consumption. This is a precision clean-up tool that can used year-round.”

› Proven to provide a superior cut & spread.

› Articulated decks that seek out contours.

› Low maintenance & easy to use.

› 3 year warranty & performance you can rely on.

Peter Pattenden, Golf Courses and Estate Manager at Carden Park in Cheshire says, “Worm casts on fairways can are a significant problem; you don’t want to use reel mowers as you have to keeping sharpening the cylinders after use, but we can set the Contour deck, which has three rotary blades, at 19mm and keep everything looking good.

“Our Ventracs have many outstanding qualities: versatility, manoeuvrability, build quality, reliability, ease of operation, but one not readily appreciated until you have it, is the ability to operate in wet conditions. We can be wet up here in Cheshire and it’s got us out of jail on many occasions. We get flash flooding on parts of the courses after heavy rain, but we can still get out and work. I have even used both machines, side by side, with their Contour decks to mow the rough after heavy downpours.”

The helping hand you need

Winter arrives every year, and yet we still find ourselves unprepared for all the clearing and maintenance jobs we need to do.

Battery-powered outdoor power equipment specialist EGO Power Plus has recently launched its brand-new multi-tool power head which can power a variety of attachments that are not only perfect for snow clearing; but also, for completing other essential winter maintenance jobs.

Ideal for professional users, the new multi-tool power head boasts more power and better ergonomics than other models. With an upgraded motor and PCB, the PH1420E is compatible with all current and future attachments and switching between different jobs

is simple thanks to the secure tool-free coupling system on each attachment.

New non-chemical solution for wormcasts

GreenTek’s new patent pending Flicker-Brush has been specifically designed to be the solution to the wormcast problem which groundsmen and greenkeepers have been struggling with ever since the banning of Carbendazim in 2017.

Existing brushes available all have the tendency to smear the wormcasts when damp, resulting in brown muddy looking turf. The FlickerBrush uses totally different technology to overcome this.

The bristles themselves are stronger and longer, and designed to pass between the

blades of grass rather than smear over the surface.

The three brush frames all run on their own castor wheels, with the bristle tips set just lightly touching the turf. This causes the bristles to flex slightly backwards, then energetically flick forwards repeatedly as the brush moves over the turf.

This rapid flicking motion, combined with the extra bristle length and thickness, produces a shattering action on the wormcasts which effectively disperses them without smearing them into the turf surface.

Reliable Dennis G860s for Hartpury

Matthew Newman, Grounds and Sports Turf Manager at Hartpury University and Hartpury College in Gloucester, claims that his fleet of Dennis G860 mowers are reliable, robust, and ergonomically excellent.

The eight sports pitches, which are split equally between rugby and football, require a lot of attention.

It is for this reason that Matthew decided to upgrade his previous cylinder mowers to four Dennis G860’s.

Relied upon at world class stadia and major tournaments, the Dennis G860 is one of the most renowned cylinder mowers in the grounds management industry. Lightweight at just 166kg it is incredibly easy to manoeuvre and comfortable to operate. The handlebar console houses the controls for the

throttle, parking brake, roller drive and cutting cylinder drive.

The mower features a large diameter front roller with an adjustable scraper which has been designed for a precise height of cut control, giving an excellent finish on every occasion.

The Dennis G860 also features an interchangeable cassette system to assist with a wide range of tasks such as including scarifying, verticutting, brushing, spiking, and slitting.

Matthew and his team use the Dennis G860’s on both the rugby and football pitches approximately three times a week. With such a busy schedule, time is of the essence and Matthew has noticed that the Dennis G860’s have helped in this respect.

Dennis Enquiry 96

Darren Morris, Course Manager at Wetherby Golf Club who has been trialling the FlickerBrush during development says “Since 2015 we have had eight consecutive fl oods, this has pushed the nutrient content through the roof.

Worm activity is absolutely diabolical. The results so far have been very very encouraging, especially wormcast dispersal”.

The Flicker-Brush is also extremely effective for brushing up nap for a cleaner, longerlasting cut. Darren says “This has enabled a reduction in

fairway mowing from 3 to 2 cuts per week”. As well as improved turf quality, this has resulted in substantial savings in manpower, fuel costs, and mower wear.

At 5.3metres wide, the Flicker-Brush is also ideal for dispersing dew. Then, hydraulically folded in to 2.2metres, it immediately becomes a very efficient topdressing brush. This allround capability makes it an excellent investment for sports pitches and golf courses, that both improves turf condition, and also saves time and money.

Club thanks dealer for support

Having been machinery partners to Hertfordshire’s Centurion Club for a number of years, George Browns recently played a pivotal role in the successful delivery of the LIV Golf League London event in early July.

The supply of additional equipment and service training was the result of six months of intricate planning between Course Manager Andrew Garland, Stuart Gray from Baroness and David Fisher, Area Sales Manager at George Browns’ Chesham branch.

The result, says Andrew, was “outstanding support and a perfect playing surface from start to finish”.

Andrew and his team of 12 currently run a fleet of Kubota tractors and RTV utility vehicles, three fairway and four tees mowers from Baroness along with a Redexim Top-Brush and Verti-Drain – all supplied by the Chesham depot of George Browns.

Commenting on the relationship, David Fisher says, “It has been a real privilege to work closely with our franchises to maximise the knowledge we could provide to Andrew and his team in what promises to be a celebratory decade year for the club.

“All at George Browns congratulate Centurion Club on the tournament, and we look forward to continuing to build on this success.”

ICL products and Agrovista service deliver at club

Stuart Hogg, Course Manager at The West Lancashire Golf Club, believes that ICL’s products and Agrovista Amenity’s service help to keep course standards impeccably high.

The West Lancashire has recently been selected by The Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews (R&A) as one of four renowned golf clubs to stage final qualifying for The Open.

“It certainly puts pressure on us to deliver,” Stuart admitted.

“As a business, we have grown massively, and so has the reputation. We have to keep standards high and constantly need to deliver high-end surfaces and to do that we need to rely on proven, quality products.”

Stuart sources all his ICL products through Agrovista Amenity – an ICL distributor, and he has recently reported excellent results from Qualibra

wetting agent and Sportsmaster WSF SMX 20-0-0 – a beneficial nitrogen source in the form of ammonium sulphate coupled with SMX – an effective and sustainable seaweed concentrate.

As well as being impressed with the products, Stuart underlined the importance of working with both

the manufacturer and distributor.

“Ask anyone - Agrovista Amenity and ICL provide the same level of service to the local club down the road as they do to some of the biggest sporting clubs in the world. Both companies’ values align with my own values.”

The Youth Sport Trust believes cuts to the hours of Physical Education on the curriculum pose a further threat to the wellbeing of young people, and should be a matter of immediate national concern.

The latest figures released by the government show a further 4000 hours of PE have been lost from the curriculum in state-funded secondary schools in the last academic year.

These cuts come against a backdrop of declining children’s health and wellbeing, increasing time spent online, and continued challenges with school engagement and attendance. The reduction continues a trend that has seen the amount of PE and sport in secondary schools in England fall by more than 12% since the 2012 London Olympics.

Ali Oliver MBE, Chief Executive of the Youth Sport Trust said: “This is contributing to a nation where too many children are missing out, have

poor wellbeing and lack a sense of belonging. The evidence is clear; unhappy and unhealthy children do not learn and just this week we are seeing proof of this as high levels of persistent absence and mental ill health have been cited as undermining pupils’ GCSE results.

“PE provides a foundation for learning across the curriculum, the physical literacy it develops is as

essential a life skill as numeracy and language literacy, and it provides a universal introduction to sport and physical activity for every child regardless of their gender, ethnicity, or affluence. With increasing demands on the NHS, it should be harnessed for its contribution to public health as well as wider social and educational outcomes.”
