Government committee launches inquiries into green spaces and careers

“With 30 million UK gardeners and many more who love and use our green spaces, we need to ensure we maximise their value. Urban green spaces deliver huge social, economic and environmental benefits. The HTA has long been calling for politicians and policy-makers to give greater recognition of the value of environmental horticulture, not least because we deliver £28.8 billion in GDP and support 674,000 jobs in the UK.

Committee Chair, Sir Robert Goodwill MP has acknowledged horticulture as distinct from agriculture, recognising the wide range of career opportunities within the industry.

The House of Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee has launched an Inquiry into Urban Green Spaces.

The Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) has been actively engaging with parliamentarians and policymakers in calling for a greater focus and attention on the value

of urban green spaces, so this news is very much welcomed.

Jennifer Pheasey, HTA Director of Public Affairs, commented: “This inquiry by the influential EFRA Select Committee is an important opportunity for our sector to set out the evidence and crucial need we have to grow our urban green spaces.

“We have set out publicly a number of asks alreadyincluding establishing an Office for Green Spaces - to deliver the cross-government and joined-up policy-making we need to deliver real change.”

The committee has also launched an inquiry into education and careers in land-based sectors.

Jennifer Pheasey commented: “This inquiry provides an important opportunity to raise the profi le of careers in environmental horticulture. Challenges in attracting and recruiting into the sector have long been identified as barriers to growth. The current directly employed workforce is 420,000 people.

“The HTA is looking forward to responding to the committee’s inquiry to highlight some of the challenges its members face and some of the possible solutions.

The sector is working through many avenues to inspire and attract talented young individuals to contribute to the future of horticulture while simultaneously creating an inclusive environment that welcomes adults seeking career changes and those passionate about making a meaningful environmental impact.

“With such a breadth of roles and routes available, our industry has the potential to offer rewarding and sustainable employment opportunities for everyone. We believe this must be better understood and recognised by all stakeholders and policymakers involved in education, skills and career advice.”

The exhibition of choice for five leading National Governing Bodies

SALTEX and its organisers, the Grounds Management Association (GMA), pride themselves on the 77-year history of the event and making it the largest trade show for the sector in Europe. This history, along with the GMA’s work towards making sport possible, has made SALTEX the exhibition of choice for five of the UK’s National Governing Bodies (NGBs).

Year round the GMA, Football Association (represented by Football Foundation), Sport England, England & Wales Cricket Board, Rugby Football League, and Rugby Football Union work collaboratively to improve pitches and upskill those in the industry.

SALTEX is the exhibition of choice for these leading sporting bodies when it comes

to meeting those who work in the groundscare industry. This has been proven by their annual participation over two busy days on the buzzing SALTEX show floor, sharing insights learned from their work, providing free technical advice on maintaining playing surfaces, and providing guidance on accessing funding.

Following its launch at Lord’s Cricket Ground earlier this year, representatives from the NGBs will be on hand to speak with visitors about the GMA’s Grounds Management Framework. The NGBs, along with members of the Pitch Advisory Service, will be available at the GMA Hub to offer support to grounds staff in learning how they can use the game-changing framework to upskill and improve their playing

surface, as well as gain access to a wealth of information.

Jason Booth has worked in the grounds care sector his whole career, from his early days at Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Leeds Rhinos to becoming chief operating officer at the GMA, and understands the importance of building closer relationships between the groundscare sector and the NGBs. Here, Jason explains why SALTEX is the exhibition of choice for five leading National Governing Bodies:

“Our relationship and the work we do with these five leading NGBs is critical to the future of sport. Whether professional or grassroots, sport is simply not possible without grounds staff and groundscare businesses – our

industry as a whole. The NGBs understand this which is why they support the sector through funding and by attending SALTEX. The NGBs also play a major role in our Learning LIVE education programme where they will discuss several burning topics relevant to their respective sports, from grassroots facility funding and workforce development to showcasing the work that has gone into the major sporting events this

year. Their input, in addition to other interactive panel discussions, which will cover key issues such as pay and reward, mental health and wellbeing, and work-life balance, adds great value to our Learning LIVE programme. And there’ll also be the latest updates on key legislations or restrictions, that are essential for today’s grounds staff to be aware of.”

With GroundsFest enjoying a successful debut show last month, and as we look forward to SALTEX next month and BTME in early 2024, the question being asked within the industry is – can we sustain three large trade shows? Added to that, there is also the point that all three are staged within a comparatively short time frame – September, early November and January. Time and arguably visitor numbers and exhibitor attendance will ultimately provide the answer to that question.

On the evidence of GroundsFest’s first show and the largely positive feedback we had from visitors to our own stand and fellow exhibitors, there is a sense that this newest exhibition ticked a lot of the right boxes for the industry as a whole. There were teething issues, readily acknowledged by the organisers during the event itself, but the diverse range of exhibitors and the mix of indoor and outdoor exhibition space and demonstration areas were certainly a big hit. The festival element also worked well, providing an enjoyable and informal opportunity for some continued industry networking and socialising that both exhibitors and visitors relished. The weather was a factor, the first day being affected by heavy rain and high winds, and yet it still felt a busy day. Across both days there was a definite buzz both inside and outside. It was also interesting to see representatives of companies who were not exhibiting paying a visit to Stoneleigh to assess whether they should sign up for 2024’s “second chapter”.

No doubt many will compare their GroundsFest experience with a return to NEC Birmingham for next month’s SALTEX show. In this issue we have a full preview of SALTEX 2023, highlighting what visitors can expect and the plans of many of the exhibitors for the two days. We also have our usual mixture of product spotlights, industry news and views and the latest case studies. The team look forward to seeing you in Birmingham for SALTEX and would love to hear your views on the future of our industry trade shows.

Coalition calls for “compost revolution” to avert looming waste crisis

A group of leading experts including horticulturists, academics, retailers, trade associations and charities are calling for a radical rethink of how we handle organic waste in the UK.

UK households produce a staggering 14 million tonnes of food and green waste every year. An estimated 2 million more tonnes will need to be processed by local authorities when new anticipated mandatory food waste collections start in 2024.

However, the experts warn a crisis is on the horizon unless urgent action is taken to tackle contamination and infrastructure issues.

Enrich the Earth, a new movement of diverse organisations including the National Trust, RHS, Suez and the Horticultural Trade Association, launch a manifesto calling for an urgent “compost revolution” to galvanise the public and achieve two clear goals:

• To increase the proportion of households composting at home from 33% to 50% - this would prevent 1,000,000 tonnes of waste needing to be processed by local authorities each year.

• To decrease levels of contamination in our garden and food waste bins - this is reaching 20% in some areas and significantly reduces the potential of the material to be used on farms and in people’s gardens. The UK organics recycling sector incurs annual costs of around £50M due to removal and disposal of over 350,000 tonnes of plastic.

A ground-breaking trial, the first of its kind at this scale has launched in the North East and aims to maximise the value of compost from green waste collected from households across the region. Garden centres, community gardening groups, restaurants and universities will also be involved in a concerted effort to compost garden waste and non-animal byproduct food scraps more, use wormeries and reduce contamination in organic waste collections. Learnings will be openly shared with the aim of rolling out the trial across the country.

Prof Alistair Griffiths, Director of Science & Collections at RHS said: “The RHS is excited to be part of this project which aims to help towards reversing the climate and biodiversity crises. Peatlands store twice the amount of carbon than all the land on earth and can store this carbon for thousands of years.

“Peatlands are home to unique wildlife and act like big sponges to reduce flash flooding during extreme weather events - linked to climate change.

“Composting is a great way to empower gardeners to take climate positive actions to help tackle the climate crisis. If every gardener gets composting, they will free up key peat-free materials (bark, coir and wood fibre) for the horticulture industry. This in turn helps industry to accelerate their transition to peat free so our nation can grow and enjoy healthy peat free plants.”

Government gives £1m boost to forestry skills training

Current and aspiring foresters and arboriculturists are set to benefit from an additional £1 million in funding, which is being allocated to fund training courses in forestry and arboriculture across England, following an unprecedented demand.

The funding is primarily aimed at those considering changing their careers to one in forestry or arboriculture, as well as those already working in the sector.

As the industry continues to grow as a result of the Government’s £675 million tree programme, the funding will create more green jobs and boost the workforce where over 30,000 people are already dedicated to expanding and protecting our precious woodlands, contributing more than £2 billion to our economy every year.

The new funding will cover training courses in a range of areas, including in:

• Chainsaw operation;

• Operating heavy machinery;

• Planning and planting new woodland;

• Deer management;

• Marketing and selling timber;

• Aerial tree pruning; and

• Branch removal

The Forestry and Arboriculture Fund – formerly known as the Forestry Training Fund - has received exceptionally high uptake since its launch in February this year, with over 150 short course training providers having registered to offer courses and 1,100 training places already funded for the next two years.

The fund has today been extended to cover arboriculture courses, with £250,000 ringfenced specifically for courses which cover the care, management and safety of amenity

trees, through skills such as aerial tree pruning, branch removal, and assisted felling.

Defra Forestry Minister, Trudy Harrison said: “As tree-planting and woodlands across the country increase, so must our forestry workforce.

“We are committed to growing the sector and increasing green jobs which will be made possible through this significant funding of Forestry and Arboriculture courses, as we continue to ensure at least 16.5% of the country is covered in trees by 2050.”

Forestry Commission Chief Executive, Richard Stanford said: “England’s forestry sector plays an essential part in creating resilient forests and woodlands which improve our natural environment, helping meet net zero carbon emissions, provide a sustainable source of home-

grown timber and boost people’s health and wellbeing.

“The additional funding provided through the Forestry and Arboriculture Training Fund, will ensure that more people across the country, from all backgrounds, are able to build and diversify their skills in forestry. I encourage anyone looking to join the sector or upskill to apply today.

“The Forestry and Arboriculture Training Fund is already playing an instrumental role in helping deliver the government’s England Trees Action Plan, which sets out how we will shape the country for future generations through a significant increase in tree-planting and woodland creation, which is supported by over £675 million from the Nature for Climate Fund.”

Over 150 European parks and green spaces win Green Flag Award

A record number of parks and green spaces in Europe have won the international Green Flag Award in 2023.

Parks and green spaces in Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Turkey were accredited with the coveted Award - including many first-time winners.

Kurpark Warmbad-Villach became the first park in Austria to win the Award, whilst in Finland parks saw a more than 50% increase in winners including Hupisaarten kaupunginpuisto in the far northern city of Oulu.

The Green Flag Award is the international quality benchmark for the public green space sector - now operating in 17 countries around the world. Running for over 25 years, the programme uses eight key criteria headings to for assessments. Both the management framework for each site, as well as an annual condition inspection is conducted through a network of qualified judges. So far in the past twelve months over 2,400 sites have received annual accreditation.

In July, the UK - where the programme originated, announced a record breaking 2,216 winners this year. More

winners in Australia, Mexico, New Zealand, USA and the United Arab Emirates will be announced later in 2023.

Carl McClean, International Development Manager for the Green Flag Award said: “Well done to every single person involved in managing, maintaining, supporting, or volunteering at one of these Green Flag Award winning places. This Award recognises your hard work and commitment all throughout the year.”

GMA announce MND Association as industry awards official charity partner

The Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association have been announced as the official charity partner of the GMA’s Industry Awards 2023.

The MND Association funds research, improves care and provides support for people with MND as well as their families and carers.

With more than 5,000 people living with the disease across the UK, for which there is no cure, the work conducted by the MND Association is crucial in fundraising to support them.

With the Industry Awards ceremony being hosted at

No sleepless nights with MM50

Headingley Stadium this year, the GMA are keen to support a charity close to the hearts of many sporting figures, especially those whose careers have been spent at the stadium.

In 2019, it was announced that Leeds Rhinos legend Rob Burrow MBE had been diagnosed with motor neurone disease and since then himself and teammate Kevin Sinfield OBE have been campaigning for support, with Kevin taking on a range of challenges in order to raise funds for the MND Association.

Kevin Sinfield OBE, England Rugby Union coach and patron

of the MND Association said: “I’m very grateful that MND Association has been chosen as the charity partner for the GMA’s Industry Awards at Headingley Stadium. For a long time now, MND Association has been hugely important to me not only as Patron but also in supporting close friends and many others who have faced a diagnosis.

Jamie Foyster, owner of Sportsturf Management, has revealed that he has been sleeping that little bit easier since using MM50 grass seed.

Sportsturf Management currently provides all yearround pitch management for four clubs as well as carrying out end of season renovations for approximately twelve more. When Jamie is not providing first class management, installation, and repair of cricket pitches, he somehow finds time to be the Chairman of the Essex County Groundsman Association.

Jamie first turned to MM50 ten years ago after trialling various brands of seed. It was the seed which impressed him the most and he has used it ever since.

MM50 possesses exceptional shoot density along with tolerance to close mowing making it particularly suitable

for cricket squares. This superior mix contains the perennial ryegrass cultivars, Singapore, Venice, Alison and Malibu, which are renowned for providing a great sward for cricket use. Singapore is a fantastic cultivar for cricket partly due to its ability to recover from play and wear very quickly meaning that wickets can be back in play quicker after use.

MM50 is also treated with HEADSTART GOLD – a unique seaweed-based seed treatment which helps to ensure rapid and even germination. This tried and tested grass seed treatment helps the seed get off to the best possible start – making it ideal to use in the less than favourable conditions that can sometimes be found on cricket pitches during renovations.

Poundbury revisited by Terrain Aeration

During 2020, Terrain Aeration undertook signifi cant work on the green space at Poundbury, Dorchester.

Situated on Duchy of Cornwall land, the area saw the planting of over 400 trees and 26,000 shrubs and hedging plants.

This was very much a part of Poundbury’s ongoing Great Field development. The project began in 2014 with the building of sports pitches, an outdoor gym, a multi-use games area and the planting of wildflower meadows.

Deep aeration specialists

Terrain Aeration were called upon to relieve the compaction and panning on the top half of the field.

They brought in their Terralift machines, which work on the

principle of hammering a hollow probe one metre deep into the soil, using a JCB road breaker gun; the soil is compact at depth and requires the hammer to break through.

At one metre depth, a hydraulic blast of compressed air is released at up to 20Bar (280psi).

This fractures the soil, creating fissures. The process is repeated at two-metre intervals on a grid pattern with the fissures interlinking to create a system of aeration and drainage. The Terralift is the only machine which uses such high pressure to enable the process to work.

On the tail end of the blast, dried seaweed is injected and this sticks to the walls of the fissures, expanding and contracting with the moisture content in the soil. The probe holes are backfilled

Lake reopened thanks to Otterbine

with aggregate to maintain the aeration process.

In July 2023, Terrain Aeration revisited Poundbury to see how the Great Field meadows were faring. They found a flourishing panorama of colourful meadows, maturing trees and hedges.

The wildflower seed was collected from existing meadows in Purbeck with the local sourcing helping to protect local populations of wildflowers. Ladies’ and Hedge bedstraw, common knapweed, Quakinggrass, Bird’s-foot Trefoil and Kidney Vetch are among the many meadow flowers growing along with Viper’s bugloss in the new field.

Otterbine’s Air Flo 3 underwater ‘bubbler’ diffused aeration system is the safe solution for Pinewood Scout Centre in Croydon, bringing its lake back to life and reopening it for water sports after a period of closure due to poor water quality.

When Jim Clements, site manager and scout leader, took on Pinewood Scout Centre last year he made it his mission to reform the site’s grounds, and fixing the lake that hosts the centre’s watersport activities was the first step.

With the water quality of the lake being key to keeping the scouts safe, the Otterbine Air Flo 3 aerator was the ideal choice to get the lake back into action.

When it came time to find an aeration solution, Jim was after two key things: a system that is safe and can access the bottom of the lake to increase circulation and oxygenation. Otterbine ticked both boxes.

Otterbine’s Air Flo 3 is an underwater ‘bubbler’ diffused aeration system that is designed to aerate and circulate the water without disturbing its natural surroundings. But best of all for Jim and the scouts at Pinewood, is that the diffuser requires no electricity or moving parts near the water which makes the system entirely safe for

swimming and for all of the centre’s water based activities. The best way to prevent algal blooms is to increase oxygen levels in the water, and Otterbine has the highest Oxygen Transfer Rates on the market – a key factor in Jim’s choice.

Ryder Cup played on course with Capillary Bunkers

The 2023 Ryder Cup at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club outside the Italian capital, Rome, has again be played on a course whose bunkers have been lined with the Capillary Bunkers system.

Marco Simone, originally designed by American architect Jim Fazio, was completely rebuilt by Dave Sampson of European Golf Design during 2019 and 2020.

The course’s back nine was entirely grassed by the end of the summer of 2019, but the Covid-19 pandemic made phase two, the front nine, a little trickier.

“I was on site in March 2020, the day Italy shut its borders, so I had to get out of the country very, very quickly,” says CapillaryFlow EMEA sales manager Kneale Diamond.

“But SOL Golf, the contractor who built the course are very experienced and extremely good at what they do, so all was well.” Around 8,000 square metres (86,000 square

feet) of bunkers were built and lined. “Obviously, the bunker drainage is vital for the Ryder Cup – given the time of year when it is played, there isn’t a lot of spare time if it rains heavily,” says Diamond.

“But even more important than that is the quality of surface in the bunkers. This level of competition demands a perfect sand surface, and only Capillary Bunkers can combine outstanding drainage performance with world-class, consistent surfaces.”

Council gets on board with new weed control solution

A local authority has taken its fight against weeds to the next level with the purchase of a vehicle mounted spray unit from a UK leading supplier of weed control products and a British manufactured quad bike which is 100% electric and has zero emissions.

Walsall Council has purchased the Lithium Pure 2WD Eco Charger Quadbike with a Nomix VMU which has enabled their own Street Cleansing team to carry out their spraying programme on the highways’ areas across the borough. They are using Nomix Hilite which is rain-fast within 30-60 minutes of application.

Nomix Enviro works with councils from all over the UK to provide support and advice on their weed control programmes.

The use of Eco Charger E-ATV’s and Nomix Enviro products represents an evolution of Walsall Council’s approach to tackling weeds across the borough, with a focus on cost and time savings, as well as reducing the use of glyphosate while maintaining effective weed control.

Andrew Stokes, Operations Manager at Walsall Council, said: “We are always looking to find new ways to improve the efficiency and performance of our weed control service.

Using an Eco Charger will have a major impact on this, and by working with Nomix it gives us the opportunity to get the maximum out of our weed control applications, while significantly reducing our water and glyphosate usage and reducing our costs.”

Nomix Enviro is one of the UK’s leading suppliers of products and technical support services

for amenity and industrial weed control. Its unique Total Droplet Control system offers a range of benefits including requiring no water or product mixing, saving time and resources for customers.

The Total Droplet Control can drastically reduce glyphosate usage for customers: if two annual sprays with a conventional

glyphosate herbicide are replaced with one mid-season application of Nomix product, the glyphosate applied during a full year can be reduced by up to 70%.

Peter Fooks, Commercial Manager at Nomix Enviro, said: “It’s been great to see our products used alongside Walsall Council’s new Eco Charger and

we’ve had fantastic feedback from the customer.

“We will continue to provide support to Andrew and the team to ensure they are getting the maximum from their investment and that the people of Walsall see the results.”

Local authorities and contractors working in the amenity sector who are subject to the Official Controls (Plant Protection Products) Regulations 2020 for the use of plant protection products (PPP), can now help to ensure their compliance with these new Regulations by joining the BASIS Amenity Assured scheme.

The OCR Regulations are enforced by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and were created so that Defra, the Scottish and Welsh Governments can gain a better insight across the UK into how PPPs are sold, used and stored.

Peter Corbett, Amenity Forum Executive Officer, explains who will need to become OCR compliant to use plant protection products in the future.

The HSE has now appointed a team of specialist pesticide enforcement officers (PEO’s), who are employed to ensure compliance with the 2020 Official Controls Regulations.

“Inspections have been taking place to check the compliance of duties under this new law since December 2021.

“Until now, the focus was on those businesses that store, distribute and sell plant protection products (PPP*), however the next phase also applies to anyone using PPP’s in local authorities and the amenity sector in the remainder of 2023-24.”

This means that those working in the following sectors: schools, parks, sports grounds (including golf courses), public or private property, infrastructure - (such as roads, railways and waterways), and utilities (such as transport and water companies) will need to be compliant.

visual elegance but also serves as a robust barrier against unauthorised access. This fence choice is ideal for a heritage project as it offers the look of traditional metal railings but with a modern, stronger, and more sustainable tubular design.

Concealed connectors and the absence of visible bolts or fixings further amplify the fencing’s security prowess while maintaining a clean and uncluttered appearance. As an integral part of the protection strategy, a 3.6m wide double leaf gate was integrated, complete with a padlockable slide latch. This innovative latch ensures controlled access, reinforcing security without compromising convenience.

The specification of high quality materials was paramount for this project. The selected Barbican Imperial fencing was meticulously crafted from high-quality hot dip galvanised steel, equipping it with exceptional strength and resistance against the corrosive forces of time. Cobra set to showcase key products

Henton and Chattell has announced that it will be showcasing the Cobra brand at SALTEX.

The event represents key industry opportunities to showcase the Cobra range to customers, dealers and stockists – as well as presenting invaluable chances to network, including directly with buyers.

SALTEX will also be a great chance for Cobra to demonstrate the capabilities of the Fortis cylinder mowers and lawn tractor ranges – both of which were launched earlier this year.

The Fortis range combines eight machines in one to give the ultimate package for creating picture perfect lawns, and are the first powered cylinder mowers to be launched by Cobra. It features

four mowers, starting with a compact 14” model powered by a Loncin petrol engine, and then the 17”, 20” and 25” all featuring Briggs & Stratton engines for extra power for larger lawns.

What makes the Fortis machines the ultimate in lawncare however, is their ability to transform into seven other machines to ensure that lawns are immaculate and healthy. The Fortis six-bladed cassette can simply be removed and replaced with another accessory cassette in the range to switch its use. Other cartridges include a verticutter, scarifier, dethatcher, aerator, turf rake, lawn brush and 10-blade cassette.

For those with larger lawns to tend to, Cobra’s new range of ride-on lawnmowers provides a high-quality, yet walletfriendly option. Starting with

compact LT62 rider models, each with a 24” cutting width and comfortable seat, these have a particular focus on manoeuvrability, allowing gardeners to flow and mow around their lawns.

Those with larger areas to mow will appreciate one of the other new six ride-on tractors available.

With cutting widths ranging from 33” up to 42”, and choices again being manual and hydrostatic gear changing, as well as a twin cutting blade and the option to collect the cuttings, release them back to the ground or turn them to mulch. They also offer enhanced comfort with a padded seat and easy electric key starting.

GKB to showcase a range of machines for all sports surfaces

No trip to SALTEX is complete without a stop by the bright and bold stand of GKB Machines.

This year, stand H051 has been redesigned to maximise visual impact and make space for a wide range of machinery from across GKB’s portfolio of maintenance solutions for natural, hybrid and synthetic surfaces.

Part of the wider GKB Group, GKB Machines has been developing innovative machinery solutions since 1985. Using the knowledge and experience gained from their contracting division, the range is renowned for its robust build quality, functionality and efficiencywith the customers’ needs at the core of every design.

From the natural offering, particular highlights include the Deep Tine Aerator (DTA) and GKB Sandspreader. The Sandspreader range features four models, offering hopper capacities between 1m3 and 4m3 to cater for fine turf, sports turf and contractor applications. The material is transported from the hopper to the adjustable metering valve via an internal conveyor belt, before being efficiently

and evenly distributed via the double disc hydraulic spinners. As well as trailed and mounted formats, GKB also offer the SPM model, which features a side material handler for the convenient filling of bunkers or trenches.

On synthetics, one important fact to consider when it comes to both the usage and maintenance of a surface is minimising the migration of infill into the environment. With the use of a synthetic

pitch, infill will naturally tend to disperse outwards towards the pitch perimeters which is where effective maintenance will be needed, to ensure infill is returned to the higher use areas where it is required for surface stability and playability.

The easiest way to achieve this is via brushing, for which GKB have a range of options.

The 4m wide Brush is ideal for quick surface coverage, with hydraulically foldable wings for convenient transportation

and storage, while the GKB Quick-Brush can be configured with a range of optional extras including a rake or rubber finishing mat to suit individual requirements. Also in the GKB stable is the Rotobrush, equipped with a rotating brush head which can switch between clockwise and anti-clockwise operation, which effectively collects infill accumulations from the perimeter and move it towards the centre of the surface.

Leading battery-powered outdoor power equipment specialist, EGO Power Plus, has announced that visitors to this year’s SALTEX; can expect an exclusive viewing of its new-look PRO X range.

Set to launch in 2024, the new PRO X range features trailblazing battery and charging technology and has been specifically designed to meet the demands of professional users as well as local authorities.

Vince Brauns, Group Product Director at EGO, comments:

“It is always great to return to SALTEX, especially as it provides us with the perfect opportunity to share exciting new developments to our range with visitors. We are really excited

for the show to open so that we can showcase our new PRO X products, including our improved charging solution.

“We have been able to evolve our battery and charging innovations to the point where users can work all day, every day, making our new PRO X range the reliable and performance-driven fleet of tools that professional users need.”

On the stand, visitors will be in with a chance of winning a selection of EGO prizes.

Industry-leading technologies from INFINICUT

ATT will be making a popular return to SALTEX this November, showcasing the latest advancements across their INFINICUT and TMSystem ranges on stand H070.

It’s been another busy twelve months for the company, with refinements in line-ups and a vast array of new features incorporated into both the hardware and software of their industry-leading pedestrian mower collection.

The company have been utilising BLDC motor technology in the INFINICUT for the last few years, which has now been developed and enhanced to boast even greater efficiency, torque and smoothness. While the original motor could not be considered noisy, one of the most evident advantages of the new upgrade is the noticeably quieter operation. A multi-connector has also now been eliminated from the motor design, further improving reliability.

Upgrades have also been made within the InfiniApp, which continues to evolve as a result of customer feedback. Several new features have been added to the app in recent months, including a new fl eet management function which has proven to be a big hit with customers managing large INFINICUT fl eets. This function enables an operator to quickly and simply save any preferred parameter setting and send it simultaneously to every mower in the fleet - resulting in huge time savings. The ability to modify acceleration and braking feel has also been well received.

Another update being rolled out by the INFINICUT team is their state-of-the-art autoslow down feature. From the InfiniApp, users can select a percentage of their chosen walk speed to slow the mower for end-of-line turning. Simply lift the mower in the normal

New Faunamaster seeders from BOSS ORV

Faunamaster Seeders will be officially launched on the Corvus stand at SALTEX 2023.

BOSS ORV, the UK distributor of Corvus Off-Road Vehicles has been appointed as the sole UK distributor of the seeders. These are multifunctional and timesaving seed drills designed for use with an ATV, UTV or tractor.

The Faunamaster, which comes from the Danish company Faunamaster ApS, sows seeds of virtually any size to a depth of up to 80mm. It is ideal for sowing into existing grass fields, wildflower meadows, tilled soil, paddocks or any area where normal planter equipment is too big. It’s of great benefit in parks and gardens to plant flowers or herbs and the compact size

when used with an ATV or UTV ensures it leaves minimum marks.

The seeder handles seed in many sizes, from small flower seeds to clover, alfalfa, beans, kale and corn, and can apply fertiliser at the same time as seeding. A seed table shows the settings for each type of seed. On the seed meter, there are 2 funnels: the blue is for small seeds, the yellow is for big

seeds like corn, and seed blends. The capacity of the seedbox is 45 litres and the fertiliser box is 40 litres.

Connecting the Faunamaster to an ATV or UTV ball hitch is made easy and a built-in actuator allows the driver to operate the planter without getting off the ATV. When fully raised, the clearance is 200mm (7.87) inches

and when used with an ATV, the seed flow is easily adjusted through the handlebars.

The Faunamaster uses discs to cut into soil and where it is used for no-till planting, the recommended depth is not exceeding 10mm (0.4in). Depth control is via two bolts located on the wheel arm. The working width is 1050mm (41.3in). There

are seven adjustable rows with the distance between them being 150mm in 7 rows, 350mm in 3 rows, 525mm in 2 rows. The Faunamaster weighs in at 260 kg and has a recommended working speed of 4-6 km/h.

The Faunamaster can be seen on the Corvus stand E045.

Vanmac not to be missed

A stop by the Vanmac stand at SALTEX 2023 is one that can’t be missed

Retaking their place on K070 directly in-front of the show entrance, the stand will be jam-packed with equipment from leading brands including Progressive and Trilo.

Particular highlights promise to be the multi-functional Trilo M4 collector and the Progressive TDR-15 - the ideal roller finishing mower for local authorities, estates and sports facilities.

Where other vacuum collectors spend the months outside of leaffall season in the shed, the M4 from Trilo works on. Proving that multi-purpose doesn’t have to mean a compromise in performance, a range of shaft options are available for the M4

making it ideal for tasks around the maintenance calendar. When not collecting leaves, clippings and other debris in the autumn, the modular unit can be equipped with a scarifier shaft for the effective scarification of large areas such as parks or fairways - with all material collected into the 4m 3 hopper on the same single pass. Alternatively, a flail shaft can be fitted for quick and convenient cut and collection of areas such as golf roughs and roadside verges.

If it is leaf collection on the agenda, then Vanmac will also be showcasing a number of other solutions in the form of the towable SU60 vacuum collector and the BL960 blower.

As the largest blower in the Trilo range, the BL960 requires a 50hp tractor, has a capacity of 385m 3/min and delivers an airspeed of 75m/s which makes it

a popular choice for large areas. In addition, the exhaust spout can be hydraulically adjusted to deliver powerful airflow in any desired direction.

From the Progressive portfolio of trailed and mounted rotary mowers, the TDR-15 will be the focus. With a combined cutting width of just over 4.5m across the three decks, the versatile TDR-15 combines efficiency with superior cut quality and presentation thanks to the hightip speed blades and full-width, heavy-duty rollers which deliver an impeccable stripe. Changing the height of cut is easy, while Progressive’s Pro Lift-N-Turn™ feature allows the decks to be raised slightly with the PTO still engaged to make manoeuvring around the course or around obstacles quick and simple.

Vanmac Enquiry 54

Proven in trials to deliver comparable efficacy to traditional chemical controls, Foamstream has been adopted by facilities across the sports and grounds sector, with all the details available to visitors on stand E057.

Delivered by a range of patented machinery, Foamstream combines hot water and a biodegradable foam, made from natural plant oils and sugars, to offer an organically certified and herbicide-free alternative to weed and moss control. The hot water is ‘insulated’ by the foam, ensuring that the heat penetrates the waxy outer layer of the leaf, travels down the stem and into the roots, killing or severely damaging the plant.

The all-natural ingredients also mean it is safe for applications around people, animals and sensitive environments making it a viable solution for, schools, local authorities parks and housing associations. 2023 has also seen a surge in sales at top-flight sports turf facilities, including a number of Premier League football clubs, most recently Chelsea FC, using Foamstream to control vegetation on pathways, car parks and other hard surfaces.

The exponential rise in demand for Foamstream systems has seen the growth of Weedingtech’s rental offering, with customers citing the benefits in accessibility and eliminating the sometimes lengthy and complex capital procurement process. Foamstream’s rental package includes the latest high-specification machinery and full technical training for a set weekly rate. In addition, an information of things (IOT) tracker is included as standard, to provide accurate measurement of output and ongoing remote support. Discounts are available for long-term hire of more than six months, with an additional option to purchase the equipment if desired, where 80% of the rental value is returned.

READER ENQUIRY 56 The
IQ dual-clutch F24/R24 gear box was chosen as it makes manoeuvring the tractor around the course whilst operating the equipment so easy. Another feature we really like is the Auto PTO function or the Headland Management System, it is brilliant for when we get to the end of the run with the aerator, we can lift the implement up, the PTO automatically cuts out, we can turn around then lower again and PTO restarts by itself. Brilliant for safety and avoiding damage or excess wear and tear on the implements themselves.”

The third INFINICUT is the charm for club Smithco electric Sand Star E

They say that good things tend to come in threes, which is certainly the case for Norwich City FC following the recent addition of a third INFINICUT SM34 rotary mower to their fleet at Carrow Road.

Giving the team of three outstanding versatility and quality of finish, Head of Grounds Adam Grantham adds that the delivery in June 2023, has also significantly improved efficiency when it comes to that all-important postmatch cut.

Adam’s first INFINICUT delivery came shortly after taking the reins in January 2022, following an assessment of the current fleet shared across both the stadium and club’s Lotus Training Centre.

“I’d used INFINICUT’s at my previous venue and had always been impressed with their performance” he explains. “I put

in a request for two SM34 rotary mowers which the club backed, and these proved to be a brilliant investment. The pair gave us a vastly improved battery-life and quality of finish compared to our previous units.”

Used initially and primarily for debris clearance and the postmatch clean-up cut, Adam could see the possibilities a third SM34 could bring to the efficiency of operations, with the latest machine delivered in time for the start of the new season.

Adopting many of the principles of their renowned collection of cylinder mowers, the SM34 from INFINICUT delivers millimetre precision adjustment and strong vacuum performance for powerful debris removal, cleanness of cut and an immaculate finish – driven by a long-lasting and reliable 105Ah lithium-ion battery.

Dennis ES-860 is the king of King’s

Roger Neale, Head of Grounds and Gardens at King’s Hall School in Somerset, has claimed that his new Dennis ES-860 battery-powered mower has been “unbelievable.”

He is currently working towards a ten-year replacement machinery plan, and explained how a new mower for the cricket square was of the utmost importance.

The Dennis ES-860 is a 34” battery powered turf management system which delivers maximum versatility and has a range of 13 interchangeable cassette options to provide a solution for many day-to-day maintenance tasks

such as cutting, scarifying, brushing and verticutting.

The aim with the Dennis E-Series is to help professionals meet sustainability and environmental initiatives, reduce carbon footprint emissions, running costs and noise without any range anxiety.

After working with petrol machinery throughout his entire career, Roger was somewhat sceptical about the performance of a battery-powered mower but admitted that the Dennis ES-860 quickly changed his opinion.

“It is unbelievable,” said Roger. “I need not have worried

Yard Force launches its first battery-powered ride-on mower

September 2023 | Forget petrol fumes and pull cords, maintaining large lawns has just got a lot greener thanks to the launch of Yard Force’s new battery-powered ProRider E559.

Driven by a fast-charging single 56v 50Ah lithium-ion long-life battery, it will deliver a huge 2800Whs of power to achieve 90 minutes of run time on a single charge. The battery has been tried and tested and will provide flawless performance for more than 4,000 charging cycles.

A twin-blade deck with a 96cm cutting width makes it ideal for lawns up to 8000m² and the anti-scalp wheels fitted to the cutting deck ensure it can adjust to changing terrains. The blades have been specially designed to mulch clippings

when the side discharge flap is closed. There are 12 easily adjusted cutting heights and a reverse mowing feature.

The design of the ProRider takes comfort seriously with an adjustable seat, fixed speed cruise control; a one-kick parking function allows the user to lock the mower into place with one kick and release with another and a small 40cm turning radius for easy steering.

The next generation of outdoor power

With battery technology an increasingly important component in our fossil free landscape, it’s time to put petrol in the past, says Mark Earles, Business and Development Manager for Outdoor Powered Equipment at Makita.

One of the biggest contributors to the growth of the cordless equipment market is growing awareness surrounding the disadvantages of petrol and the potential that battery power has to reduce the impact of outdoor maintenance work on the environment.

Take the Eden Project for example. The visitor attraction has pledged to eradicate emissions with the aim of becoming a climate positive organisation by 2030.

As such, the Living Landscapes team have taken steps to replace the site’s entire supply of outdoor landscaping equipment with battery powered products to maintain the site’s Biomes, 20 acres of outdoor gardens and over 140 acres of nursery grounds, parking areas, woodlands and wildflower fields.

Noise pollution, health risks from inhalation of harmful fumes, as well as the vibration associated with petrol tools are also stimulating this shift from petrol power. Cordless machines are often lighter and better balanced, so users have better control, and they produce lower vibration and noise levels which is not only safer for the user, but is also ideal when working in public and populated areas.

Lithium-ion batteries can hold high levels of energy and will work for long periods of time without needing to be charged.

As such, on-site productivity is increased without the need to down tools as often. Furthermore, lithium-ion batteries have a minimal selfdischarge rate while not in use, so the battery can be stored and will be ready to go on demand, whilst they can also be charged at any time without impairing the battery performance. Of course, a battery does not last forever, so its important to invest in products where you can be reassured of the quality of engineering and testing that has gone into the product, for the peace of mind

and reassurance that professionals need.

Some manufacturers, like Makita, have designed further safeguarding measures to prolong the life of the battery and optimise the charging process. Its batteries use a communication system that can analyse the condition of the battery, its current charge level and temperature.

Then, the charger regulates the optimal current, voltage, and temperature (even cooling it before charging) to prevent overload, over discharge or overheating, while recharging the battery.

For those convinced about the benefits of battery power and looking to upgrade their kit, investing in tools that not only provide the power and performance needed but also facilitate a vast range of tasks is an exciting prospect. A variety of tools that are powered by the

same battery system, such as Makita’s 18V LXT, or 40VMax XGT platform, affords users with the ability to shift between jobs easily and quickly, simply by switching the battery.

With this multitude of benefits, outdoor professionals are increasingly able to use cordless tools to improve their environmental impact as well as generate new efficiencies on-site and help to improve productivity levels.

However, not all lithium-ion batteries are made the same. As such, it’s important to select products from manufacturers that have refined the technology to advance the battery performance, as this can really make the difference in choosing a cordless machine that is below par, or one that is reliably comparable with petrol power or corded equivalents.

Yamaha’s battery technology in golf cars and UTVs

Yamaha features battery technology in its golf and light utility vehicles.

In the Drive² AC Li golf car the battery is a high-performance, maintenance-free, cobaltfree unit from the renowned manufacturer, Roypow, and offers a number of key benefits. Linked to a powerful 3.3 kW motor, it provides fast, smooth acceleration and, with greater torque than a conventional lead acid battery, it’s 20% faster climbing a 15-degree incline.

Of appeal to golf course operators, the batteries are maintenance-free resulting in considerable savings in time and labour costs. They also come with a five-year warranty and a working life of up to eight years. They charge almost twice as quickly as their leadacid equivalents and provide in

excess of three rounds before they require recharging.

The new Drive² AC Li can utilise YamaTrack, Yamaha’s management system, that improves the operational efficiency of any golf car fleet. It allows golfers to enjoy 3-D terrain graphics and customisable Pro tips, while geo-zones can be set up to protect environmentally sensitive areas and players can pre-order food and beverages while out on the course.

While the successful range of Yamaha’s ATV models satisfies the requirements of the more extreme off-road user, the UMX AC is designed to handle an array of tasks in commercial, industrial, agricultural and leisure environments.

ET Lander cruises through the streets of London KIOTI two-year warranty provides peace of mind

According to Jo Desborough, Head Gardener for The Bedford Estates, the Etesia ET Lander is a luxury electric utility vehicle which can be driven from site to site through the busy streets of London without worrying about the battery life.

The Bedford Estates has owned, developed and cared for much of Bloomsbury, London since 1669. It also includes two public garden squares, Russell Square and Bloomsbury Square and several private garden areas.

The location of these gardens was a reason for choosing the ET Lander according to Jo.

“We chose the Etesia ET Lander because it’s a vehicle that’s easier to drive on the roads,” she said. “We have to go between our gardens and in order to do that, there are busy London roads in

between, so having a cab that’s fully enclosed helps us with the traffic. It’s more comfortable to ride in and the features that it offers are perfect for what we need.”

One hundred per cent electric, spacious, well-equipped and user-friendly, the ET Lander is built on a robust chassis and has an array of options including a three-way tipper bed with dual control from the fully fitted twoseater cab or by remote control when outside the vehicle.

With a length of just 3.72 meters, the ET Lander is very compact. Thanks to the power steering, the short turning radius of 4.40 meters and 360° visibility, it goes anywhere. The autonomy of the vehicle lasts for a full working day – without noise pollution, can transport loads of up to 940kgs and can also tow up to 750kgs.

The latest models are fully N1 homologation compliant meaning that the ET Landers are fully road legal along with being able to be used off road. They also feature lithium-ion batteries which ensures that the range of the ET Lander extends to 100km and have a charger system compatible with a standard type 2EV car charger.

The battery-life on the ET Lander certainly doesn’t concern Jo and she also revealed that the team wouldn’t be without it.

Bloombury Estates purchased the ET Lander through Etesia dealer RT Machinery and Jo was quick to praise the service she has received to date.

New MT100 mini track loader

Bobcat has launched the new MT100 mini track loader, part of the new Grounds Maintenance Equipment range for 2023.

The new MT100 mini track loader removes the need for manual labour, replacing the use of wheelbarrows, shovels and hand tools in many types of work.

The tracks on the MT100 allow travel over established surfaces with less worry about repairs and costs associated with surface damage.

The compact dimensions of the MT100 provide easy passage through narrow gates and doorways and facilitate work in confined spaces.

In addition, the MT100 shares many of the same attachments found on other small Bobcat loaders such as buckets, trenchers, breakers and sweepers using the same standard BobTach system.

Yamaha electric UTVs at Bishop’s Stortford College

Yamaha’s UMX AC light utility vehicles have proved a hit with Adam Smith, the Head of Grounds and Gardens at Bishop’s Stortford College in Hertfordshire.

He and his team now have three of these electricpowered workhorses for estate management duties, while the Catering team have two, which are used for delivering food

and beverages to the various houses and to outlying areas of the campus.

The Maintenance team are about to take delivery of their own unit with an enclosed carry box for transporting tools, cables and other necessary equipment.

“We have three UMX’s for the Grounds and Gardens team and

they are excellent workhorses,” he explained “The carrying capacity is just over 360kg and the aluminium cargo bed is a generous size with a one-touch tailgate latch.

“We also use them as the tow vehicles for our ground-driven sweeper on our two Astroturf pitches. At 100 x 70 metres, they are large areas to keep clear of debris, but the UMX’s

are certainly up to the task. “Summing up, they are quiet, which is ideal in a school environment, comfortable, easily maintained, good on artificial surfaces, sturdily constructed, have a very good carrying capacity and the LED headlights are excellent, especially in the winter months.”

MJ Abbott take delivery of Kubota RTV’s

Reported as the first vehicles on site and the last to leave any project, a fleet of RTV’s from Kubota have been described as pivotal in the delivery of works by one of the UK’s largest specialist contractors.

MJ Abbott purchased their very first Kubota RTV back in 2006, and now have a total of 29 units supporting operations around the country – with some of their older models clocking up more than 15 years and over 4000 hours of reliable service

Among the 29 units are four RTV 900’s, nine X900’s and thirteen X1110’s – three of which were delivered in February 2023 by local dealer and long-term support partner E G Coles.

“The majority of our fl eet are running on turf tyres and are equipped to utility spec, with lights, which suits the variety of landscapes we work on,” explains Technical Director Adrian Abbott. “They’ll be the very first thing loaded onto

the truck and delivered to site, where they then become the go-to method of transporting both the workforce and the equipment around.”

“As well as them being heavy duty, another big thing we like about the Kubota is the hydrostatic transmission.

“Compared to other methods, this makes for a smoother drive and is a much more robust mechanism when operating over uneven terrain.

“In addition, they also have power steering and full hydraulic tip, instead of an electric actuator, which we make full use of.”

With a fleet of that size, comes the necessity to service them effectively which Adrian says is successfully managed in-house with the support of E G Coles and Kubota when required.

HiSun – make the smart move, and switch to electric

The innovative range of HiSun lithium-ion-powered electric utility vehicles is designed to work just as hard, if not harder, than traditional fuel-powered machines. There are four models, 5 kW, 7.5 kW, 15 kW and a 4-seater 15 kW. The versatility of these machines makes them ideal for applications in estate management, sports and leisure, events and utility.

The move to electric UTVs offers many benefits over petrolpowered machines. There is no compromise on power, with these latest lithium-ion UTVs providing all the power needed for use in challenging off-road conditions. They are free from harmful carbon emissions, which supports the shift to a virtually zero-carbon economy in the drive to tackle climate change and reduce global warming.

Choosing electric power offers huge savings in fuel costs, with an overnight charge costing around £1. There is also the bonus of no road tax, as electric UTVs can be used both on and off-road. Electric UTVs are

usually cheaper to service and maintain with no engine and fewer parts to service.

The quiet electric motor is a key attribute making these machines ideal for driving near animals or in areas where noise must be minimal. An electric UTV has no gearbox, so acceleration is smoother, making for a more comfortable ride.

HiSun UTVs are true multifunctional vehicles. Featuring a winch, tow hitch and cargo bed, they have the versatility to recover and carry equipment and tow-powered machinery.

All models have the option of the DFK fully enclosed cab kit that includes a glass windscreen with wash/wipe, rear screen, metal roof, and lockable doors so that the UTVs can be customised depending on the customer’s requirements.

HiSun vehicles are supported and distributed in the UK by EP Barrus Ltd.

hire specialist Speedy Services has taken a big step towards a sustainable customer delivery model by commissioning its first two zero-emission FUSO eCanters.

The trucks are now transporting products from the company’s comprehensive range. One is based at a depot near Whitehaven, Cumbria, which supplies contractors working at the Sellafield former nuclear power and fuel reprocessing site. The other works from a branch in Warrington, where it serves a client base comprised largely of building firms.

The world’s first fully electric light-duty truck to enter series production, the 7.5-tonne eCanter represents a major advance in the battle to improve air quality in towns and cities.

Its electric drivetrain employs six 13.8 kWh lithium-ion batteries with a total power output of 82.8 kWh (66 kWh usable). The permanent-magnet motor delivers 129 kW (180 hp) via a

single-gear transmission in the rear axle. A single charge gives the truck an effective operating range of more than 62 miles (100 km), which is ample for many urban delivery applications.

Speedy’s fleet of more than 1,000 vehicles includes 50 at 7.5-tonnes GVW, more than half of which wear FUSO’s three diamonds badge. The new eCanters are the subject of a contract hire agreement with Daimler Truck Financial Services and fitted with plant-carrying platform bodies by Bevan Group; these have dropsides incorporating the Black Country bodybuilder’s patented Safe-T-Drop system.

Speedy has been delivering excellence to its base of more than 50,000 customers for over 45 years. The company offers in excess of 300,000 itemised assets from its network of 200 depots across the UK and Ireland, as well as providing expert training, testing, inspection and certification services.

LCVT low floor vehicles the obvious choice

LCVT have been manufacturing low floor vehicles in the UK for over 7 years, and not only developed the chassis itself, but also manufacture both the chassis and bodywork in house.

The Low Floor Ground Maintenance range is available in several lengths and widths and offers a number of operational advantages over the more traditional high floored beavertail products on offer.

The key benefit has to be that with the floor only 500mm off the ground loading machinery is safer and quicker.

With the need for operatives to be on the vehicle floor when loading plant such as commercial ride on

mowers the potential for accidents to occur is significantly reduced.

Combine this with the unique perforated aluminium floor

used by LCVT which offers high levels of grip in all weather conditions for both machinery and operatives, the vehicle is the number one

solution to fleet managers when moving equipment.

Landscape teams climbing new heights at UK theme parks

Two of the UK’s largest theme parks, Chessington World of Adventures and Thorpe Park Resort, have invested in John Deere to look after their diverse and complex estates.

On the outskirts of south-west London, Chessington attracts approximately 14,000 people a day in peak season, while 20 miles away, Thorpe Park is focusing on presenting a perfect theme park for hordes of visitors.

The site management team at Chessington, led by Nick Burch and Tom Beith, is responsible for over 200 acres, including 60 acres of ancient woodland.

Its new John Deere fleet is made up of two HPX 815E Gators, a

1570 front rotary mower, and a 4066 compact utility tractor.

The 4066 is proving to be a wise investment as it has enabled the team to mulch on-site, saving tens of thousands of pounds on bought-in materials.

Thorpe Park’s Site Manager, Andy Plumbly, has been working at the park for 23 years. His fourstrong team is responsible for maintaining 160 acres of land.

Andy runs an almost-identical fleet of machines as the Chessington team, but also has a higher horsepower 5M Series tractor to work with.
