Mixed performance for construction product manufacturing

The Construction Products Association’s latest State of Trade Survey for 2022 Q4 revealed a quarter of mixed fortunes for the construction product manufacturing industry.

Performance was split between a decline in sales for heavyside producers and continued growth for manufacturers on the light side. Furthermore, manufacturers expect these dynamics to persist in 2023, with new build starts a ected by economic uncertainty but refurbishment and activity for energy-e cient retrofit continuing apace.

Rebecca Larkin, CPA Head of Construction Research said: “It was a mixed bag for construction product manufacturers at the end of last year, with demand in some areas of construction knocked by renewed economic uncertainty following the Truss government’s Mini Budget, as well as early signs that historically high inflation was stalling household spending and business investment decisions.

“This primarily a ected heavy side manufacturers, who experienced a fall in sales for products that are typically used at the earlier stages of construction as demand and confidence weakened for new build project starts. Sales growth continued for light side manufacturers in Q4, however, and is

likely to have been buoyed by areas of construction that are still experiencing strong activity, namely o ces refurbishments and energye cient retrofit such as insulation measures.”

Key survey findings include fuel, energy and raw materials costs rose for all heavy-side manufacturers, while overall costs are expected to increase over the next year according to balances of 69% on the heavy side and 62% on the light side, the lowest balances since mid-2020

Overall, the Q4 survey highlights the varied demand by the construction sector and adds to the signs pointing to a slowdown in activity across new build or sectors that are driven by consumer or business confidence, which will be partially o set by high levels of activity on commercial refurbishment and energy e ciency improvements.

FIREFLY protects new industrial units

The specialist sub-contractor undertaking much of the fit out for 26 new industrial units in Dorset, put forward the use of the ZEUS Lite 90:30 high performance fire barrier, from the range of TBA FIREFLYTM, in order to protect all of the suspended ceilings within offices and other ancillary areas. For the Bedrock Park project, all the rolls of ZEUS Lite 90:30 barrier, along with the well proven FIREFLYTM fixings, including stainless steel staples and fire-resistant adhesive, were supplied to Vitec by CCF of Portsmouth. FIREFLYTM ZEUS Lite comprises a flexible woven fabric fire barrier that has been specifically developed for the vertical separation and compartmentation of extensive concealed spaces within buildings. Euroform has introduced a new direct render base board called Versarend, an A1 non-combustible exterior grade board that is cement based yet light weight with ‘score and snap’ workability, so is quick to install. Welfare facilities get a little help from Saniflo

The former HQ of retailer Woolworths located at 242 Marylebone Road in London, is currently being transformed. While the restoration is underway, the contractor has installed site welfare facilities, including several WC blocks, for the construction workforce. An enquiry was lodged with the Saniflo technical team who swiftly visited the site to scope out the requirement and recommended a Zehnder Kompaktboy Duplex lifting station.

The unit was able to installed below the WC blocks, in the basement, allowing for optimum gravity fall and pumping the waste back to the main sewer. The powerful, 3-phase pump, which can be integrated into the building management system if required, has two vortex pumps as a failsafe precaution.

StormCrate manages rainfall at luxury development

Aurubis Timeless Nordic Brass Weathered

A new commercial building in Stockholm is defined by its carefully detailed facades of Nordic Brass Weathered pre-oxidised copper alloy from Aurubis.

In the Nattugglan neighbourhood, developer Vasakronan has replaced an inefficient and outdated office block with a new, ‘LEED Platinum’ certified modern building. The Folkungagatan 44 project provides 22,000 m2 of space, largely for offices but also including conference spaces, plus retail outlets and a restaurant on the open, street-facing ground floor. Equator Stockholm Architects’ design comprises a five-storey block with two further storeys, each stepping back to generate ‘living roof’ gardens. The building’s strong presence is defined by its almost classically structured facades of fenestration and Nordic Brass Weathered cladding. Carefully detailed and executed flat panels, ‘fluted’ mullions and horizontal mouldings between windows, copings and other details align clearly expressed vertical joints throughout.

Bristol-based architects Marshall & Kendon have sought technical advice from manufacturer Marmox, regarding the integration of its Thermoblocks into the exterior insulation ‘wrap’ of a bespoke, near-to-zero timber frame construction. A total of 170 of the 100 mm wide version for the versatile 600 mm long Thermoblocks were specified, with installers utilising an approved adhesive to not only seal the overlap joints, but also to bed the blocks across the OSB base which is covered by a ‘paintable’ membrane. The various lines of Thermoblocks then support the stick-built timber frame exterior and internal walls, with the main isocyanate floor insulation panels infilling the rest of the ground floor area. Thermoblocks feature a unique design where two rows of high strength epoxy concrete mini-columns are encapsulated in sections of XPS.
