New guidance launched to create safer parks for women and girls

Practical guidelines which will help to make parks and green spaces safer for women and girls across the UK have been launched at a conference organised by the University of Leeds.

It follows a recent study of a cross-section of more than a hundred women and girls from West Yorkshire which found that most believed their local parks to be unsafe.

The document is a partnership between Mayor Brabin, the University of Leeds, Make Space for Girls and Keep Britain Tidy, and is aimed at park managers, local authorities, police and community groups.

The guidance is primarily aimed at parks managers, landscape architects and other public realm design professionals across the UK, and helps stakeholders understand gendersensitive principles of safety and implement changes at varying scales and budgets. Dr Anna Barker, an Associate Professor in

Criminal Justice & Criminology in the University of Leeds’ School of Law led the original research and has organised today’s conference.

She said: “In Britain, women are three times less likely than men to feel safe in a park during the day.

“This is worse after dark, when as many as four out of five women in Britain say that they would feel unsafe walking alone in a park, compared to two out of five men.

“All these factors mean that women and girls are less likely to use parks than men and boys, a situation which has a significant impact on their lives. Our guidelines, covering ten principles for design and management, can enable decision-makers to enact change.”

The guidance will be launched as part of a two-day conference entitled Women and Girls’ Safety

in Parks: Lessons from Research and Practice.

The opening session will be chaired by Alison Lowe OBE, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime in West Yorkshire, and the guidance itself will be introduced by the Mayor of West Yorkshire Tracy Brabin, who funded the work as part of her Safety of Women and Girls Strategy

Among others attending will be representatives from the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, Women in Sport, Keep Britain Tidy, and Make Space for Girls.

Keep Britain Tidy’s Chef Executive, Allison OgdenNewton OBE, said: “It’s critical that we understand what makes women and girls feel safe or unsafe across our green spaces and what needs to change to make them feel able to use their local park.”

“Our own research already shows that 70% of people in urban areas do not have access to

good quality green space, rising to 75.8% in the most deprived areas. When coupled with women’s concerns about using those few green spaces they have access to, it means there is a real inequality. We must tackle it collectively, and as a priority.”

“We are proud to be a part of this important and much needed project.”

The organisations behind the new guidelines hope decision-makers will now review all their parks in

partnership with the police and engage with women and girls specifically on safety, ensuring that those who do not currently use the parks are included.

They are also calling for the new guidance and the results of their discussions with women and girls to be incorporated into management plans for parks and green spaces and reviewed regularly.

Welcome...

It is just a matter of weeks before SAGE 2023 gets under way at the Three Counties Showground in Malvern and it should signal a busy few months for the industry in terms of shows and exhibitions.

From Plantworx to Glee, The Landscape Show to SALTEX, the industry is well served by such events and with the newcomer to the show calendar GroundsFest attracting a large number of exhibitors reflecting the diversity of the different sectors, there is plenty of opportunity to get out and see new products and listen to the new services now being provided.

Add in the various demonstration, training sessions, workshops, seminars and conferences that will take place alongside many of these events and pretty much everything you need is now being catered for by those organising these exhibitions. It now falls to the industry as a whole to support these events. Yes, there are now more events being staged but each of them offer something different.

Understanding the latest product developments is important, as is sharing best practice within the industry. Committing to attending such events does mean time away from the workplace, but arguably it is time that is being wisely invested.

The manufacturers, stakeholders and trade bodies are all investing considerably in supporting these events and the wider industry needs to start supporting them. The invaluable networking opportunities that were so sorely missed during the height of the pandemic are available again.

This month we preview SAGE 2023, as well as carrying our regular Play & Activity supplement and Jane Carley shining the spotlight on two and four-wheel tractors. There is also the usual mix of industry news, views, product launches and case studies. The team from TSP Media will be at the various events taking place in coming months, we hope to see many of you there.

Action needed to increase resilience to droughts

The Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) is urging action on water management grants to increase the industry’s resilience to droughts.

The HTA represents its members on the National Drought Group, which met last month to discuss the urgent need to focus on preserving water resources now, to reduce the risk of drought measures in the future.

The group comprises senior decision-makers from the Environment Agency, the government, the Met Office, water companies, and key farming and environmental groups.

A very dry February, followed by an exceptionally wet March and unsettled April, highlight that businesses cannot rely solely on the weather and should focus on preserving water to prevent future drought measures. Whilst much of England is in a better position than last year and reservoir capacity across the UK was at 94% as of the beginning

of April, East Anglia, Devon, and Cornwall remain in drought and face temporary use bans. The National Drought Group is preparing for the worst-case scenario of another hot, dry summer and is urging water companies and individuals to reduce leakage, decrease water consumption and find new ways of being resilient to drought.

On 4 April, the government published their ‘Plan for Water’, which sets out measures to increase drought resilience and ease water supply pressures.

However, whilst the Plan for Water is a step in the right direction, the HTA urges sufficient support for all members without restrictions holding them back from accessing funding to increase their resilience.

The current Water Management Grants from Defra are open to horticultural businesses growing or planning to grow irrigated food crops, ornamentals, or forestry nurseries. However, the

MM grass seed is a winner for Worcester

investment minimum needs to be lowered for many members of the HTA to make it viable.

The HTA is requesting that water companies and the Environment Agency provide or support a funding program for horticultural businesses to enhance rainwater capture, construct reservoirs, recapture run-off, and use grey water.

The industry needs to grow sustainably to meet the government’s tree planting targets, continue to contribute to human health and wellbeing, mitigate against climate change, and improve local biodiversity.

Additionally, the Environmental Improvement Plan released in February set out the government’s aim to increase the percentage of water storage used by the agriculture and horticulture

sectors by 66% by 2050. In the event of sustained drought periods, before the necessary funding for investment is made available, the horticultural industry will continue to increase its use of rainwater capture.

However, it is imperative that water companies and the Environment Agency work together with the garden centre sector to encourage consumers to reduce water use in the garden and increase rainwater capture/ water reuse at home.

The combined area of the UK’s domestic gardens is roughly the same as the whole of Somerset, highlighting the necessity to educate domestic gardeners on their role in protecting water security.

AN EDGE YOU CAN TRUST

Gardeners across the world have discovered, for many years now, the unobtrusive attractiveness of EverEdge.

Worcester College, one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford in England, is benefiting from using a range of MM grass seed.

Founded in 1714, the College’s 26 acres of stunning grounds feature plenty of lawns alongside a lake, an orchard, and sports fields.

Students at Worcester are the only ones in the University to benefit from on-site sports pitches and excel at football, cricket, and hockey. Simon Bagnall, Head of Gardens and Grounds, has been working at the College for 19 years, and has been using the MM brand of grass seed throughout his whole tenure.

MM is one of the most respected brands in the UK amenity industry, with over 40 years of experience and knowledge.

The extensive product portfolio is second to none with performance proven mixtures that are used at many leading venues in the UK and Europe.

There are two mixtures within the MM portfolio that Simon and his team rely on, as he explains. “We use MM50 and MM21 across all our sports fields and utility lawns. We normally oversow with the mixtures during our renovation period and then will apply them through the year if we need to do any repairs.

“Another benefit of using these MM seed mixtures is the speed with which they germinate. We have quite a short window between renovations and when the students come back so to be able to get some grass growing quickly is a huge bonus for us.” MM50 is one of the UK’s biggest selling grass mixtures. The hard-wearing ryegrass mix is very fine leaved, has high shoot density, is tolerant to close mowing down to 4-5mm and produces a great colour all year round. It also has quick recovery from damage and play.

MM21 produces a dense, fine and attractive sward and is a great mix for lawns and landscaping with low ryegrass.

Bowls England supports GroundsFest

Bowls England, the national governing body for lawn bowls, is supporting GroundsFest and will be running a dedicated education programme at the event which will be held at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire on 20 – 21 September.

In a dedicated theatre on the event floor, the Bowls England education programme, sponsored by Dennis and SISIS, will run on both days of GroundsFest. The programme will combine insightful seminars and practical tips while Bowls England’s Expert Advisor Alan Lewis, will take to the stage to discuss a wide range of key topics.

Alan will be on hand to share his advice on end of season renovations to ensure that greens receive the required treatment. He will also be discussing

best practice including tips on cutting, brushing, scarifying, spraying, verticutting, aerating and watering. Furthermore, there will be essential information about grant funding support, and choosing the correct grass seed.

A machinery workshop will give delegates an opportunity to see several turf maintenance techniques in action and will allow them to gain some hands-on experience with a variety of equipment.

Later in the day attendees will receive a tour of GroundsFest giving them the chance to speak to leading manufacturers and industry experts. The education programme will conclude with a ‘Turf Clinic’ question and answer session, where delegates will get the chance to ask some of their own questions to

Alan. Commenting on Bowls England’s decision to have a presence at GroundsFest, Jon Cockcroft, Chief Executive, said: “Bowling Greens truly are the beating heart of our sport.

“We are committed to helping clubs create the best possible environment for its participants to enjoy a superb bowling experience and are keen to work with industry specialists to educate clubs and provide them with the relevant information to achieve this.” Organisers have also announced that there is only 15% of floorspace remaining.

GroundsFest is on track to be the new must-attend event in the groundscare calendar. In terms of space, it is already the largest event of its kind in the UK. Over 120 brands have booked to attend, and thousands of

visitors have signalled their intention to attend.

Commenting on the limited stand space remaining, Sales Director Charles Neale said: “If you’re thinking about exhibiting with

GKB Ecodresser delivers sustainable solution

Contractors W R Sandow have praised their recent purchase of an Ecodresser from GKB Machines as they join industry associations in encouraging more sustainable management of winter sports pitches. The Ecodresser recycles material from the profile to improve drainage and play characteristics while reducing reliance on imported sands and dressing material – offering a solution that is both practical and cost effective. “Sustainability is really coming to the fore in our sector as we all look at our impact on the environment” explains Director Andrew Sandow.

“We’ve been looking at recycling dressers for many years but specifically wanted one with a

stone screen which comes into its own when working on grass roots pitches. The GKB Ecodresser ticked all of the boxes for us.” When matches are played on wet ground, the action can disturb the profile and cause the soil to go into suspension. As it settles, the heavier particles like sand, settle faster while lighter particles like silt and clay will settle more slowly – capping the sand underneath the top layer which, over time, can destabilise the surface and reduce its natural ability to drain. The blades of the Ecodresser cut through the ground to depths of up to 200mm, breaking through the ‘crust’ and bringing the finer soil back to the surface.

INFINIApp loaded with new

Not content with just being the world’s only professional mower with Bluetooth connectivity, INFINICUT have recently launched the latest version of their INFINIApp – designed to deliver unparalleled consistency in cut.

Available for Android and iOS devices, among the new features is programmable automatic turn slow-down, reducing the mower to a percentage of walking speed for a more comfortable end of line turn.

The novel approach INFINICUT have used to wirelessly programme their award-winning range of cylinder and rotary mowers offers several benefits.

First and foremost, the app’s main purpose is consistency in cut. An example is that the same desired clip rate can be set on several different mowers and

features

maintained across all machines regardless of the operators preferred walk speed. Helping with consistency and efficiency, and eliminating the risk of human error, fleet management is another neat feature. Wirelessly connect the whole fleet of mowers to the INFINIApp and simply select one of your pre-loaded set-ups to apply those identical clip-rate, acceleration and re-gen brake settings to every machine.

Not only does the INFINIApp offer new-found precision and simplicity to set-up, programming the mower via a smart device also reduces the componentry required on the mower itself.

SCH system offers versatility

The SCH GWCS9 is a versatile sprayer suitable for herbicides and fertilisers in large and small areas.

The nozzle at each end of the boom is mounted on a swingback arm so, in the event of the boom coming into contact with a tree or shrub, it will swing back instead of breaking off.

The spray boom is height adjustable to accommodate different towing heights and lifts off for safe storage. The four

nozzles have a maximum spray width of 2440mm (96”), and with the wing booms folded back and switched off, the spray width reduces to 1220mm (48”).

GMA’s awards to be hosted at Headingley Stadium

The Grounds Management Association have today announced that its annual Industry Awards will return on Wednesday 29th November 2023, with this year’s event being hosted at Headingley Stadium in Leeds for the first time in its 12year history.

The GMA awards ceremony celebrates excellence within the groundscare industry, recognising the outstanding performance of volunteers and

professionals working across the sector.

Having previously taken place in Birmingham’s NEC in tandem with the delivery of SALTEX, Europe’s largest tradeshow, this year’s ceremony will operate as a standalone event and be hosted at Headingly Stadium in Leeds.

Geoff Webb, CEO of Grounds Management Association said: “The decision to move away from SALTEX and host a standalone

event was made following industry feedback and allows for the focus of the evening to be celebrating and raising awareness of the skills and hard work grounds workers deliver all year round. With Headingley Stadium home to allseason sports, this felt a natural fit for the event this year and we look forward to welcoming the sector to such an impressive venue this November.”

Grounds Management Association

Recent rapid expansions have seen major investments for Hounslow-based contractors PGSD – the most recent of which is a second TinyLineMarker from Origin Amenity Solutions (OAS).

So impressed with the accuracy and labour savings brought about by their original TinyLineMarker Pro, a Pro X has joined the fleet to deliver efficient marking to schools and sports turf customers across the home counties.

“Due to the growth in business, we were finding that marking surfaces manually was becoming problematic in terms of both time and labour” explains Managing Director Mark Hooley. “Sports facilities and schools tend to work to extremely tight

changeover timeframes and so, to meet requirements, we looked to technology to help.”

Mark and the team researched the market extensively and found the TLM Pro to be extremely effective during trials. “We wanted something that was straight forward to operate and that would give us the precision we need when installing these lines. The TLM Pro met all of our requirements, and upon delivery in the spring of 2022, proved to be absolutely outstanding!”

The TLM Pro was shared between teams based in London and Hertfordshire before being joined by a new TinyLineMarker Pro X in April 2023, giving the two PGSD schools’ teams their own

marker for an even more efficient service. “Our operatives were blown away by the intuitiveness of the Pro but the Pro X is next level!” exclaims Mark.

“The tablet has been upgraded and there are even more settings and stored markings – all easier to find and use. There is also a wealth of new features, simple things like the ability to manually flush out the system after marking which is a great addition.”

Robust and versatile, the TLM Pro X is the new fast and effective solution to marking – offering a 10L paint capacity and high traction, pro wheels making it suited to even the most demanding field painting jobs.

“Our two TLM’s have been out most days as we prepare sports grounds for the summer season,” he added. “With the software, we can programme and mark out a 400m running track in 90 minutes compared to two operators spending a full day using string and tape measures… and getting even better accuracy.”

ES-34R’s

are magnificent at Molineux

Three electric Dennis ES-34R rotary mowers have made life a little easier for the groundstaff at Wolverhampton Wanderers FC according to Anthony Parker, Deputy Head of Grounds.

Battery-powered equipment was always the long-term goal for Molineux Stadium, home to Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, but a change in circumstances gave the club an opportunity to invest in it sooner than planned.

“The Covid season really affected our work after a game,” said Anthony. “All television interviews took place on the pitch so we couldn’t get on straight after a game to start cleaning up. However, the Premier League allowed an exception if electric

machinery was used due to it being quieter. We wanted to go down the greener route anyway, so this just helped us make the decision a bit earlier than planned.

“It was important to do our due diligence and look at all the different electric mowers on the market,” continued Anthony.

“We trialled several mowers and gathered all the feedback from different members of groundstaff. In the end we just felt more comfortable using the Dennis ES-34R’s. The Dennis mowers we have had in the past have always been very good, robust, trustworthy machines. We have always had good back-up from the company and there is just peace of mind there.” The ES-34R is a 34” battery powered twin blade

accredited operator training added to portfolio

GGM Groundscare have unveiled a new LANTRA accredited training academy as the latest offering to their portfolio of services, after identifying a requirement in the industry.

The new courses provide delegates with the skills and knowledge required to safely operate and maintain relevant machinery through courses that deliver both practical skills and health & safety guidance.

All training can be carried out either on customers own premises, using the equipment that team members will be using on a dayto-day basis or at GGM’s own impressive dedicated training centre in Colne, Lancashire. The LANTRA accredited training courses ensure that operators

are trained to a national standard whilst fulfilling the organisations legal obligations with regards to the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulation 1998 (PUWER).

GGM Managing Director Chris Gibson explains more:

“After many conversations with our customers, as a business we identified that there was a requirement in the market for a one-stop shop that offers accredited operator training in addition to selling machinery. GGM are committed to continuing to strive for excellence in customer service, and the new training academy is the next chapter in this.”

Writer and TV presenter goes wild for Euroflor

In her recent column ‘Green Scene’ written for The Western Mail newspaper, Lynne pays the biggest compliment.

“Whenever I use or talk about wildflowers, there is only one company I recommend and that’s Rigby Taylor who are part of Origin Amenity Solutions. They provided the seed for the memorable wildflower meadows at the Olympic Park back in 2012, and more locally, have provided a lot of seed for Monmouthshire Council, and a few years ago for some of the roundabouts in Blaenau Gwent. If you have seen any of those displays, you won’t have forgotten them.”

Lynne runs a garden design business and is a gardener at heart with a passion for the outdoors and is often described as a Champion for Mother Nature.

She continues: “There are numerous fabulous mixes to choose from, making sure there is something suitable for every

site and situation. Euroflor offers a wide range of mixes including horticultural cultivars and/ or UK native and naturalised species in varying combinations. Mixes are available for spring or autumn sowing and there are 11 mixes to choose from in the Euroflor Project Pollin-8 range. This project is a major initiative at reversing the decline in pollinating insects by including high yielding nectar and pollen flower mixtures.

When it comes to working on landscaping projects, it’s essential to use the right materials. MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME (MTX) from MEDITE SMARTPLY, is a truly innovative panel that offers unlimited possibilities for landscapers.

MTX is guaranteed up to 50 years above ground and 25 years in ground and provides an environmentally conscious alternative to plastics or metals for installations. It has outstanding durability and dimensional stability and is resistant to rot and fungal decay, making it ideal for garden designers and landscapers. It’s especially beneficial in environments

where humidity and varying weather are usually concerns. MTX proved to be a success at not one, but two RHS Chelsea Flower Shows.

MEDITE SMARTPLY’s first venture was at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2019, partnering with Wallgarden, bespoke maker of children’s playhouses, and award-winning garden designer and landscape architect Sarah Eberle.

A miniature Hampshire-style cottage and London shop (modelled on the Pragnell fine jewellery showroom in Mayfair) were created out of MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME (MTX) especially for the garden. At the RHS

Chelsea Flower Show 2022, MEDITE SMARTPLY worked with Sarah Eberle on the MEDITE SMARTPLY Building the Future garden.

The magnificent centrepiece of the garden, which was inspired by natural vertical rock strata, was created out of MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME (MTX). The garden focused on sustainability and the multiple applications and versatility of MEDITE SMARTPLY products. The impressive garden went on to win two awards: Gold for Show Garden and the award for Best Construction.

A lifetime of fencing in the Yorkshire Dales

Matt Hey, of Ilkley in West Yorkshire, has been fencing, installing gates, concreting, and maintaining land since he was 15 years old.

With sixty years’ experience in the industry, he knows what works

and what doesn’t when it comes to fencing and land maintenance.

establishment and a long flowering period.

The vibrant display changes throughout the year thanks to 14 different species – with early season Eschscholtzias and Iberis giving way to mid-season Poppies, Cornflowers and Flax, before Marigolds and Cosmos dominate towards the end of the year.

Euroflor Rainbow Annuals supplied by Origin Amenity Solution (OAS) was selected to deliver a burst of vibrant colour and the results didn’t disappoint – with the success of the project overwhelming the team with positive feedback and securing further wildflower areas around the community.

idverde is Europe’s leading provider of grounds maintenance services and landscape creation projects. idverde’s clients in the UK include more than 200 public bodies and 55 housing associations, The Royal Parks in London, the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Glasgow Airport and more than 100 blue-chip private sector businesses such as Vivo and Veolia.

“The council approached me to see how we could increase visual impact and biodiversity to an area of recreational land, making the space more welcoming for people and wildlife to enjoy” explains idverde Contracts Manager Alex Colbourne.

“While we had worked with OAS before, we hadn’t had seed from them, so I spoke to our Area Sales Manager Andria Backhaus who took some soil samples and provided us with some excellent advice. With her experience, we prepared the area ready to sow the Rainbow mix at the end of April.”

Assisting Andria, Alex and the team of operatives with the sowing of the Euroflor was Howard Wood who, with

over 40 years of experience in installing meadow lands across Europe, was well placed to provide a plan to achieve maximum results.

“We followed their advice and started to see growth in approximately three weeks, and in six weeks we were in full bloom.” Alex continues,

“I think it’s fair to say the results exceeded everybody’s expectations. We had an array of flowering species, bright and bold colours and the comments we received from the public was amazing.”

Euroflor Rainbow Annuals from OAS is a popular choice for those looking for rapid

“Once the season was complete, we cut the growth back and then prepared the ground ready for the new seed, which went down a little later this year due to the cooler conditions.”

Alex continues, “Together with introducing more wildflower areas this year, we have also had the opportunity to team up with a couple of local schools which has provided a great opportunity to teach children about the importance of habitat and ecology and get them involved with sowing the seeds. It’s been a real success all round and fingers are crossed for similar results this year and into the future.”

Why is looking at total cost of ownership important when buying machinery?

Choosing the model of mower and additional equipment is only one aspect of the decision. You also need to consider the lifetime costs of your new machinery.

Buying machinery is a popular route as it ensures you have full control and ownership of your equipment and is an asset within your business. However, it is vital to consider the total cost of ownership (TCO) when making this decision.

Both new and used machinery needs to be assessed with TCO in mind, helping you to budget for the best possible choice for your long-term needs. Let’s explore TCO in more depth and how to calculate the real cost of your new machinery and the potential return on investment it generates.

PRODUCTIVITY

The productivity of your machinery is measured at the rate at which the work is performed. Key variables may include the overall cutting width of the mower, as well as the operating speed. When we talk about operating speed, we mean both the forward speed of the machine, but also if that one machine can do all the work required. For example, would you have to roll the area after it’s been mowed or is there a roller on a mower? Would you need to go around afterwards and blow the cut grass away, or does the mower have a collector?

Speed may also impact the cut quality, depending on the chosen model. The more productive the equipment, the more jobs you can get done, and the more profitable you will be.

Investing in the most up-to-date technological machinery usually delivers higher productivity levels. However, older machines can still deliver high productivity levels and be the correct choice for your work. To find the most suitable machine, we recommend having a demonstration on your grounds.

FUEL

Operational costs are another leading contributor to machinery’s TCO. Older equipment may naturally be less efficient and may use more fuel, so it is important to consider whether an initially lower price is worth the additional cost over time to keep the equipment operational.

If you are looking to purchase an attachment machine, then you should consider the weight. The heavier the attachment, the more power and fuel it will draw from the tractor.

While hybrid and electric technologies are becoming more popular, we are still in the early adoption stage for this machinery. It is also important to consider whether the increased cost is worth the investment.

MAINTENANCE & SERVICING

When we talk about maintenance and servicing, we are referring to several things:

What maintenance and/or servicing does the machine require?

Understanding the machines’ maintenance requirements is important as this will affect the TCO. How many grease points does the machine have? How frequently do they need to be greased? How accessible are the grease points?

You may be surprised at the results when you go through all this information. It’s not uncommon to see machines requiring 200+ hours a year of greasing.

That’s almost a month in the workshop, unable to be used. And that’s just for greasing, not all the other servicing a machine requires.

How accessible and affordable are spare parts?

Parts and the accessibility of parts should be a key deciding factor when purchasing new machinery. Consider: How frequently will crucial parts and components need to be replaced?

• How long does each part take to replace?

• How accessible are the parts?

These are all great questions to ask sellers. Consider, if your machine breaks down, can you get next-day delivery to get you back up and running?

Every minute of downtime costs money so understanding the maintenance and parts costs for your new equipment is a vital part of its TCO.

What support and backup is available?

Is there technical support available for your new equipment? It’s worth exploring whether there are useful self-help portals or 24/7 support from specialists in the make and model of your machinery. To make an informed purchase, you must ask questions about the support available for your new machinery. Ask as many questions as you need to feel confident in your purchase, as making a good purchase decision relies upon having all relevant information.

PURCHASE PRICE

The initial cost price is the final key component of any machine’s total cost of ownership. The purchase price you pay is often the main figure considered before investing in new machinery.

However, as the above shows, many other factors influence the true and total cost of ownership. Budgeting accordingly is vital to ensure you purchase the right machinery for your needs.

Buying older

appealing because of the lower purchase price.

However, this equipment often does not offer additional benefits such as warranties, service plans and reliable parts availability.

When considering any machinery, you must thoroughly consider the ongoing maintenance and running costs.

USING TOTAL COST OF OWNERSHIP TO INFORM YOUR NEXT PURCHASE

Taking a more holistic and longterm approach to the total cost of ownership will help ensure you choose the right option for your needs. The same principles apply if you are looking to purchase brandnew equipment or considering second-hand. It is easy to be swayed by an attractive purchase price but do not forget to look into the specifications of the machinery,

consider its efficiency and the costs that may build up over time in fuel, maintenance and running costs. The total cost of ownership gives you a truer and more reflective picture of the lifetime cost of your machinery, so measuring and comparing different models of different ages and conditions is a vital part of making your final purchase decision.

In 2021, Theale Parish Council embarked on a journey to upgrade its outdoor play facilities on the recreation ground.

The Council decided to replace the existing playground and provide more facilities for older children, teenagers and adults while reducing antisocial behaviour and combatting obesity in the process.

Proludic was selected not only to produce designs for these two exciting projects but also to oversee a consultation process that would give residents the power to shape the final designs.

Proludic produced an online survey that asked residents to give their opinions on the play and MUSA (Multi-Use Sports

Area) proposed design facilities. The survey received over 200 responses and results indicated a clear preference for a MUGA (Multi-Use Games Area), and outdoor gym and Calisthenics equipment. Proludic also produced a YouTube video to engage younger children.

The final design for the toddler and junior play area featured a new coloured wetpour safer surfacing and also included accessible swings (J493), ageappropriate Kanope & Diabolo multiplay units (J5610 & J38124), trampoline squares (R34-ETP-000A), a rodeo board (J3501) and an inclusive roundabout (J3501). Additional items for the toddlers were a fun playhouse (J234) and a seesaw springer (J852).

The MUSA included a MUGA court featuring a range of sports markings and including football goals and basketball hoops at either end. Lower fencing on one side of the MUGA was put in place for spectators to get involved with the on-court action and make the space more inclusive. Next to the MUGA, we installed an ACTI’Street fitness area for callisthenics, with ACTI’Fit outdoor gym equipment aimed at sociable exercise.

Such a grand design merited a grand opening, with goodie bags and free ice cream for young visitors and activities, games and refreshments for all.

Huck brings colour and fun to a new playground

North Mills in Bridport was once a major hub for the town’s rope and netmaking industry, an industry which dates back to the 13th century and the Town is still world famous for.

So, when the requirement was identified by the Bridport Town Council to add a playground to the North Mills Estate, their first stop was Bridport-based Huck Nets, who still manufacture rope and netting in the Town, and make, supply and install rope play equipment, as installed at the very popular West Bay play area nearby.

The newly created playground is aimed at youngsters from 5-11 years. It features a range of Huck’s unique rope play equipment including the Huck bird’s nest

Tough Trail innovationeibe’s newest brand range

With elements of parkour, free running and calisthenics, play meets sporting challenge with full body commitment.

The tough trail transforms your playground into an exciting, action-packed fitness/play experience for young people aged 10 and up.

Our Tough Trail is tested and certified EN 1176 compliant.

It has been designed with deliberately challenging access so younger children cannot climb onto the equipment and use features designed for children above the age of 10.

The benefit of this is that it means it can be included within a public space as part of full play schemes with equipment designed for

other age groups which would previously have offered very little for this age range.

Features of Tough Trail include:

• Challenging ascents, transitions, and descents for the 10+ target group

• Sporty orientation with movement stimuli from sports such as free running, parkour or Ninja Warrior

• Conforms to national play standards EN 1176

• Robust materials especially suitable for high utilization and a long product lifetime

• Modern, urban design

• Three casual colour concepts to choose from

• Available with timber, stainless steel, galvanised steel and powder-coated posts

• Interchangeable modular structure for customisation

Tough Trail is just one of the segments within our extensive brand range which can be viewed via our main catalogue.

If you create your own play scheme using any of our equipment, we can carry out a free “regulations conformity review” to check your design meets the industry standards.

Should you ever have a unique brief that requires a one-off piece we offer a bespoke design service and work with you to help make your play concepts a reality.

tree with the addition of a bridge and slide, a 3- bay swing and a trampoline. More equipment is to be installed in the future.

As well as choosing the right equipment for the play area, the colour of the equipment and rope was considered. Good use of colour can inspire the imagination, encourage vigorous play and set the tone for interaction and socialisation.

“We have worked with Huck for a number of years. We were very pleased to be offered the chance to install this new equipment using the new powder coloured range” said Town Surveyor, Daryl Chamber “Play equipment should enable young people of all ages to play together, and be seen as a challenge to engage and

test their abilities, Huck’s play equipment certainly does this”.

Huck has recently expanded their Powder-Coating range and now offer it instead of the galvanised posts. For this project they also incorporated some of their new coloured ropes.

Huck’s play range includes equipment for ages 2-6 and young adults, and is perfect for schools, councils and all play areas. Huck also offers end-toend design, supply, installation and maintenance of outdoor play equipment.

Powering the industry

Tractors are at the heart of most groundcare operations. Jane Carley looks at how more sustainable power sources are beginning to emerge and catches up with product news from around the manufacturers.

As electric cars become almost ubiquitous, tractor manufacturers continue to pursue a range of power and fuel options to fulfil the requirement to travel over varying terrain and drive implements.

John Deere says that its standard position is that diesel combustion engines are the most efficient at the moment but, the company is exploring all the alternative technologies including battery, biofuels, hybridisation. However many of these technologies are still very new and need a lot of development before they can be rolled out across the world, the company’s spokesman points out.

Deere purchased Austrian battery technology provider Kreisel Electric in 2021, and says that it sees demand growing for batteries as a sole- or hybridpropulsion system for vehicles.

Products in Deere’s portfolio such as turf equipment, compact utility tractors, small tractors, compact construction, and road building equipment could rely solely on batteries as a primary power source.

Kubota has the LXe-261 electric tractor out for evaluation with a number of customers.

Equipped with a large-capacity battery that can provide onehour charging and three to four hours of continuous run-time, the LXe-261 will allow operators to quickly charge the batteries during lunch and continue working in the afternoon for optimal efficiency.

Key features for mowing, hauling, and other green space management tasks include an independent PTO, HST transmission and multiple hydraulic outlets.

The specification of the LXe-261 is contained in a compact size, making this model well-suited to a range of applications.

Antonio Carraro launched its first hybrid tractor in 2021, working with Ecothea, a specialist start-up at the Polytechnic of Turin.

Based on the company’s reverse drive, articulated models, the SRX Hybrid has a 55kW three-cylinder 1861cc engine, combined with a 20kW electric motor, for a total of 75kW, equivalent to 102hp. It can operate in full electric mode in closed environments such as glasshouses.

The structure of the hybridelectric system makes it possible to exploit the available power of a diesel engine combined with an electric drive system, guaranteeing continuous traction when working with the PTO, during transportation and in material handling works.

Interaction between the diesel and electric traction motorgenerator drive systems is managed by an electronic

power control developed specifically for this type of machine. When working in full electric mode, the battery pack is recharged each time the brakes are applied or via an electric charging station or the diesel engine. The company has now developed a fully-electric tractor based on its proven SuperPark 4800 models, also in conjunction with Ecothea.

Known as eSP, it has a 25kW, (33.5hp) engine, with 32kWh capacity battery packs operating at a high voltage of 640V to give up to six hours runtime, with the possibility of recharging it from the mains or from charging columns using a Cat 2 connection. It features a hydrostatic transmission with electro-hydraulic control offering three speed ranges up to 30kph, cruise control

and differential lock. The choice of the AC SuperPark model, (hence the name eSP), targets the vehicle at grounds maintenance work, making use of the articulated ACTIO chassis to work in confined spaces and undulating surfaces.

The eSP has lift capacity of 1100kg on the front linkage and can fit attachments to its rear platform; it also offers two hydraulic spools to the front

and one to the rear. With the increased interest in low carbon fuels, Iseki has approved the use of HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) in the following tractor model ranges TG, TH and TLE.

HVO is a fossil-free alternative to mineral oil, but with similar chemical and physical properties to diesel fuel whilst delivering lower NOx and particulate emissions.

Further benefits over biodiesel include not being hydroscopic, nor prone to bacterial growth. A conversion kit for the TXGS24 subcompact model will be released later in the year.

FarmTrac’s all electric FT25G features a 72V lithium-ion battery and onboard charger, allowing it to be charged from any domestic socket to 100 percent in as little as eight hours, and can offer up to six hours’ run time.

Distributor Reesink Agriculture says that 18.5kW motor is powerful enough to outperform 25hp diesel equivalents with the progressive switch settings and transmission speed dial helping to conserve energy.

The FT25G also boasts a 450kg lift capacity for its three-point linkage and can be paired with a front loader. It is supplied with a three-year warranty.

Tractor news

Kubota has added an entry level tractor from its partnership with India-based Escorts Tractors.

The EK1-261 from EscortsKubota is designed to offer simple operation and powerful performance with a range of practical accessories – including a loader - and options for tasks such as mowing, landscaping and light soil work.

Power is supplied by a threecylinder 24hp Stage V diesel engine, protected by a onepiece cowling for easy access to engine maintenance points. An ergonomic shift lever and constant mesh transmission system enables gear changes between the nine forward and three reverse gears while on the move.

Compact at just 2.67m in length and 1.035m wide, the EK1-261 also offers optimally-positioned controls, a weight-adjustable operator’s seat and foldable ROPS protection

Lift capacity is 750kg with an open-centre hydraulic system and double-acting spool valve.

Bobcat is now offering three compact tractor platforms, the 1000, 2000 and 4000 series which feature nine new models from 25 to 58hp, as result of an agreement with Kioti and part of a new range of groundcare equipment.

The offering includes manual and hydrostatic transmissions: three-point hitch with telescopic or quick lower links and open canopies (ROPS) and cabs.

Bobcat’s proven Bob-Tach system comes as standard on all machines fitted with front-end loaders, enabling users to switch easily between different Bobcat attachments Fuel consumption is kept to a minimum thanks to the Eco PTO feature, while the linked pedal ensures optimum driving performance from the efficient three-cylinder engine.

The versatility of John Deere’s 2038R compact utility tractor makes it a popular machine with groundscare professionals, says the company. The three-cylinder, turbo charged engine delivers 36.8hp and is easy to use and manoeuvre.

Users have a hydrostatic transmission with twin touch pedals for ease of use and precise operation, built on a robust chassis which easily handles towing large loads and loader work. The optional ComfortGard cab features a deluxe cloth seat, large doors, and integrated work lights. It offers excellent visibility and a compact design, which makes operating close to trees and other obstacles much safer.

A key feature for users needing daily use of the PTO is the automatic engagement.

With the electro-hydraulic PTO, operators can turn on implements on the go.

An e-throttle allows the machine to automatically increase or

decrease engine speed as the operator presses on either of the twin-touch pedals.

This can be beneficial to groundscare operators when transporting the machine on the road because it allows the operator to keep both hands on the wheel and have full control of the machine with their feet.

The 2038R also features an electronic height of cut control for quick and accurate adjustment of the mower deck with the flip of a switch. Height of cut is shown in the operator display panel for convenience.

Options include a drive-over mowing deck which can be connected and disconnected in seconds and rear-mount collection system.

A compact three-point front hitch can be specified for increased versatility.

New Holland’s latest Boomer stage V range now includes two new Class 3 models, the 47hp Boomer 45 and the 57hp Boomer 55.

Enhanced operator comfort across the range includes models with hydrostatic transmission and standard cruise control which helps to reduce operator fatigue. Class 2 and 3 models are equipped with the highcomfort Boomer Suite cab, offering outstanding visibility and ergonomic controls.

Models with hydrostatic transmission also offer the EZ Speed function, which coordinates the forward

hydrostatic pedal and engine speed. This ensures the correct engine speed and ground speed whenever the operator requires it, and reduces noise levels when the tractor is stationary.

The new Auto pto feature automatically turns off the pto when the three-point hitch is raised and re-engages when lowered. This function reduces fatigue and speeds up work in applications where the rear lift needs to be activated frequently.

The Boomer 55 model features a new three-cylinder turbocharged engine with Common Rail Direct Injection technology for powerful performance, and torque back up of 188Nm at 1600 rpm. Fuel efficiency is enhanced with the availability of the 540E pto setting in Class 3

models, ensuring that pto speed never exceeds the rpm target by more than 10%, ensuring low fuel consumption.

Kioti offers two main ranges of tractors for groundcare operations, the CK tractors with engine power ranging from 24.8 to 50.9hp, and DK tractors from 45.5 to 58.5hp. Powered by Kioti stage V compliant diesel engines, both ranges are available with open platform or air-conditioned cabin and manual or HST hydrostatic transmissions.

When carrying out tasks such as mowing or verti-draining the CK and DK compact tractors increase comfort and convenience with an Auto PTO, engaged by the touch of a switch which stops the rear PTO and the implement working when the implement is raised to

a predetermined height, and reengages when the rear linkage is lowered.

PTO Cruise sets the engine RPM at the press of a switch which provides a constant engine and PTO speed; this speed can be increased or decreased by 50rpm if the operator wishes to adjust it and the selected engine speed remains stored as long as the PTO switch is engaged.

This function saves the operator from having to use the hand throttle to set the engine speed every time. It is optional on all CK tractors and open platform DK models, and standard on cabin DK tractors.

Cruise Control, available on all hydrostatic (HST) tractors and activated via a switch, maintains the current forward speed without the need to keep pressing the forward pedal.

Metrac bank tractors from Austrian manufacturer Reform

can offer all year versatility for a range of tasks. Simon Richard, UK Agent for the Reform bank tractor range says, “Local authority groundcare budgets are stretched to the limit and they are holding on to older equipment for longer. This may mean that amenity spaces are suffering and that safety issues are not being addressed. Having machinery on the fleet that can be used all year round on a range of different tasks should be the aim.”

The Metrac specialist bank tractor models with a power range of 61-95hp and a Muthing flail is a

VERSATILITY AT ITS FINEST

Here at the Garden of Cosmic Speculation with it’s vast landscapes, sculptures and gardens we are never short of jobs to do. We already have a SXG mower for cutting the lawns and one TXG tractor, so to help with the workload we purchased another TXGS24 23hp subcompact tractor.

“With the front loader and bucket fitted it’s largely used for excavating and landscaping purposes. It’s also used for towing trailers, transporting grass cuttings and leaves for easy disposal. With the two tractors we can run the PTO’s and systems off one trailer and can unload into a trailer attached to the other tractor. If we can attach something to them, then we can use it.

“ISEKI offer exactly what we need, they are reliable, comfortable and safe to use. I would recommend these machines to absolutely anyone.”

The Ventrac ET202 Turbine blower makes quick work of any clean up job and is designed to move large volumes of air and is much quieter than conventional debris blowers.

The powerful front discharge nozzle can be hydraulically rotated through 360 degrees from the operator’s seat and a

Wiedenmann Super 600 is new rough champion

Fife’s Crail Golfing Society, the seventh oldest club in the world, has enhanced its rough management programme with a Wiedenmann Super 600, 3-in-1 flail mower and collector.

Across the Society’s two glorious 18-hole courses, the Old Tom Morris -designed Balcomie Links and its modern counterpart, Craighead Links, there is an

abundance of well-tended rough that demands close attention.

Courses Manager, Bob Meikle said: “When considering a flail mower replacement, I looked at different manufacturers then asked a couple of nearby course colleagues for their specific user experiences of the Wiedenmann Super 500 & 600. We’ve had a GXi8 aerator for six years and a

Terra Combi surface conditioner since 2007, so were familiar with Wiedenmann’s build quality and reliability, but ‘real life’ feedback is invaluable.”

The new machine arrived in April from Wiedenmann UK’s Scottish dealers, Fairways GM at Kinross, with Fairways’ Mike Lindsay and Wiedenmann UK’s Andy Kerr, providing installation training.

Bob and his team of 13 greenkeepers, opted for the bigger Super 600 model with its 450-litre tank and host of classleading Health & Safety features.

The rough management mission is for native grasses, the bents and the fescues, to thrive and push out patches of less desirable rye grasses. With thinner sections, the environment is more conducive for indigenous grasses to return.

The new XZ8 series, launching in 2023, features steering wheel control and bridges the gap between professional and consumer zero-turn machines. They are engineered to mow precisely and help prevent turf

Club can’t get enough of the SISIS Quadraplay

The football pitches at Prees Cricket and Recreation Club in Shropshire have significantly benefitted from a SISIS Quadraplay, according to Head Groundsman Duncan Austin.

With a multitude of football teams ranging from under 8’s up to seniors, both men and

ladies, it is safe to say that the three football pitches are heavily used.

Aside from the three football pitches, Duncan also maintains two artificial football pitches, a cricket square and two bowling greens, so anything that makes his life easier is a huge benefit.

damage – even on sloping terrain. The two machines powered by either a Kawasaki or Kohler engine also feature patented Synchro Steer technology to retain full control of the front wheels. Steering and drive control are synchronised to help control the speed and rotation direction of each rear wheel, whatever the position of the front wheels.

This ability to control all four wheels with a steering wheel and steerable front wheels minimises the turf being churned up by the

wheels or crabbing on banks, less experienced operators can benefit from the ease of use and amazing manoeuvrability of this machine.

Comfort is at the forefront of the machine’s design thanks to the high back seat with armrests and individually adjustable suspension.

The robust steel frame is designed for durability even on challenging terrain and the Hydro drive system helps provide a smooth mowing experience. The machines will mow an area

of up to 13,000m²h with cutting deck widths of 122cm / 48” and 137cm / 54”.

At Cub Cadet we trust our XZ8 series to perform with maximum durability and robustness and offer a warranty of 3 years or up to 500 working hours (whichever comes first) – for commercial or private use as well as offering a dealership service that delivers true advantages to you and your business.

North Berwick delighted with Terra Spike GXi 8HD

It is for this reason that Duncan and the Club decided to explore the possibility of obtaining an equipment grant through the Football Foundation.

The multi-functional SISIS Quadraplay single pass maintenance system is perfect for busy groundspersons like Duncan as it incorporates a mounted frame for up to four implements such as grooming rakes, spikers, slitters, rollers and brushes.

The implements can be fitted to the mainframe in any order and can be independently adjusted to achieve the desired effect. Compact, robust, versatile and with the ability to carry out up to four operations simultaneouslythe Quadraplay makes life a lot easier for many groundspersons.

Both the work quality and speedy delivery of a new Wiedenmann Terra Spike GXi8 HD have been hugely helpful to the greenkeeping team at North Berwick Golf Club.

Course Manager, Kyle Cruickshank, who was appointed in October 2022,

relies heavily on the two timetabled windows to carry out essential maintenance in which course closes for 2 ½ days in each window.

The Terra Spike deep aerator arrived from Scottish dealer, Fairways GM at Kinross just before the March maintenance window.

“It’s a brilliant machine and brings so much flexibility but its arrival, was also extremely efficient. The supply chain has been difficult to deal with in the last few years so it was great to be able to take delivery of the GXi8 very swiftly,” he said.

Flete Estate improve environment for people and pollinators

Flete Estate, home to Mothecombe Gardens, have eliminated herbicide use and created a more environmentally friendly space for both people and pollinators, by switching to Foamstream from Weedingtech.

Sustainability has always been a focus for the family-run estate situated in a picturesque part of South Devon and now, under the management of John MildmayWhite, the site is another step closer to being completely organic and chemical-free.

Foamstream is a green solution to weed and moss control, utilising a combination of hot water and a patented foam made from natural plant oils and sugars to retain heat and effectively kill a wide variety of weed species. In trials, Foamstream has demonstrated similar efficacy to glyphosate,

outperforming other nonherbicidal alternatives. “It was clear during our research that Foamstream had been thoroughly tried and tested, in a range of situations and would give us the results we wanted” says John.

“We purchased an L12 in August 2022 and it’s been a brilliant investment,” explained

STIHL launches new range of water pumps

STIHL has launched its first range of petrol 4-stroke water pumps, specifically designed to meet the demanding needs of agricultural, construction and hire markets.

The new range consists of two models, the WP 300 and WP 600.

The WP 600 boasts a robust cast iron impeller, a powerful 4.4 kW engine and 3” hose connections for the delivery of large volumes of water up to 63 m3/h, and comes complete with an integrated suction filter to protect the pump from dirt particles.

forecourt fuel, Moto4Plus has a significantly longer shelf life, less harmful emissions and no tank drainage requirement when in storage.

Both pumps offer intuitive technology including low oil protection, meaning the engine switches off when the engine oil level falls below the safe operation threshold. An anti-vibration system also helps to reduces mechanical stress. Designed with user comfort in mind, the WP 300 and WP 600 offer a sturdy frame

for excellent stability and easy transportation, simple controls and toolless access to the air filter for easy maintenance.

All STIHL tools, including both water pumps, are compatible with the STIHL Connected fleet management system. Installing a STIHL Smart Connector allows the runtime to be recorded and sent to the user’s smartphone via Bluetooth for accurate usage and maintenance records.
