Construction product sales fall for first time in two years

In latest State of Trade Survey from the Construction Products Association, data indicates that the sales of construction products have fallen for the first time in two years.

Furthermore, a slowdown in construction activity in the publicly financed and repair & maintenance sectors since Summer, as well as the deteriorating economic backdrop, underpin manufacturers’ expectations of a contraction for the year ahead.

In Q3, 12% of heavy-side manufacturers reported that sales of construction products declined, marking the first fall since the nationwide lockdowns in 2020 Q2. Alongside this, 17% of lightside manufacturers reported that product sales rose, which marked the lowest balance in two years.

In the Q3 survey, demand was viewed as the key constraint on manufacturers’ activity going forward. On balance, 53% of heavy-side firms, whose products tend to feed into the earlier stages of construction, anticipated a decrease in sales over the next 12 months. On the light side, a balance of 13% of firms anticipated a decline, marking the first negative view since the height of the Covid-19 disruption in 2020. Rebecca Larkin, CPA Senior Economist said: “The easing in manufacturers’ sales and the emerging weakness in construction output in Q3 is now

joined by broader deterioration in the UK economy.

“High inflation continues to erode household finances and take big chunks out of project budgets, at a time when markets reacted badly to the ex-Chancellor’s early fiscal plans and knocked confidence and growth prospects even further.

“With a recession on the cards for 2023, it should come as no surprise that construction product manufacturers are anticipating a contraction in sales and activity. This combines with the strong rates of input cost inflation that already pervade the supply chain and have begun to delay decisionmaking on construction projects.

“Hopefully, some of the unanswered questions around the government’s spending plans will be resolved in the coming months and help to lift the cloud of uncertainty hanging over our industry.”

Marmox

Thermoblocks ‘WRAP’ for Bristol house build Bristol-based architects Marshall & Kendon have sought technical advice from manufacturer Marmox, regarding the integration of its Thermoblocks into the exterior insulation ‘wrap’ of a bespoke, near-to-zero timber frame construction. A total of 170 of the 100 mm wide version for the versatile 600 mm long Thermoblocks were specified, with installers utilising an approved adhesive to not only seal the overlap joints, but also to bed the blocks across the OSB base which is covered by a ‘paintable’ membrane. The various lines of Thermoblocks then support the stick-built timber frame exterior and internal walls, with the main isocyanate floor insulation panels infilling the rest of the ground floor area. Thermoblocks feature a unique design where two rows of high strength epoxy concrete mini-columns are encapsulated in sections of XPS.

CUPA PIZARRAS

CUPA Heavy 3 slate provides the key to renovation

CUPA PIZARRAS’ Heavy 3 slate has been specified as part of a unique self-build residential home in the Scottish countryside. Showcased on the latest series of Channel 4’s Grand Designs, Heavy 3 was selected to renovate the roof of a Grade II listed bothy that had to be incorporated into the property’s overall design. The slate was the ideal solution to replicate the aesthetic of the original Scottish slate. Approximately 6,000 Heavy 3 slates were nail fixed to the bothy’s roof. Produced in two thicknesses, in this case the extra thickness and weight of the 7-8mm variant provides the strength to withstand the high wind speeds and driving rain that is common throughout Scotland. Also available in a number of sizes, Heavy 3 size 300 x 200mm slate is widely used on conservation projects and comes with a 100-year warranty as standard. 52 Grosvenor Gardens, London, SW1W 0AU T: 020 3318 4455 E: uk@cupapizarras.com

CMS Danskin Acoustics

Acoustic scheme

for historic Standon Hall

Acoustic insulation experts CMS Danskin Acoustics have worked with historic Standon Hall to specify and supply a range of acoustic products to reduce the impact of airborne and impact sound transmission in the Grade II listed Staffordshire venue.

CMS Danskin Acoustic’s in-house technical team conducted a site assessment in order to specify an insulation strategy to address structure borne noise and absorb sound. The resulting acoustics strategy from CMS Danskin Acoustics involved the installation of 600 square metres of Smartspan floor panels, Karma TNF70 high density stone-fibre batt and REGUPOL acoustic isolation strip. Challenges included the need to specify high performance acoustic materials of a thickness that would not increase bedroom and bathroom floor levels.

Howells Patent Glazing Bespoke upgrade of two properties

Howells Patent Glazing has recently upgraded two properties in the north of England supplying bespoke single and double pitched roof lights. Each system is designed to complement their respective construction project. As a specialist in aluminium thermally efficient roof glazing, Howells worked closely with the main contractor in often challenging conditions to realise the client’s vision. Retrofitting roof glazing can seem complicated, but with

the right information, any obstacles can be overcome. Howells’s design team starts the journey with in-depth conversations and a brief, they then draw in the glazing, considering all the client’s requirements.

Howells is a trusted manufacturer with almost 50 years’ experience. As such, the manufacturing process only begins once the drawings are agreed and formally approved. Work can then be completed to suit the works package.

Sika’s high-performance range comprises fireresistant sealants, wraps, collars, fire boards, compounds and ablative pads for both linear and penetration seals. All products within the range are fully compliant with the most relevant national and international standards, including EN 1366 and EN 13501, and have been fully tested for both resistance and reaction to fire.

Technical guidance is also available via Sika’s UK based passive fire protection team, who can work closely with specifiers to devise

detailed technical evaluations for more complicated joint specifications where existing test data is not available. These technical evaluations are offered free of charge, and can usually be completed within a working week, providing all the necessary information is supplied. These legal documents can then provide building owners with the reassurance of knowing that not only are the specified passive fire protection products fit for purpose, but they are also fully compliant with the relevant building regulations.

Complete protection from a single source

Complemented by its new product line of seamless surface finishes, wedi’s floorto-ceiling system solution now offers protection against mould and fungi at both substrate and surface level.

Directly tileable wedi elements, manufactured with 100% green energy, at least 25% recycled XPS core material, are waterproof to the core. The new range of seamless wedi Top design surfaces, manufactured 100% from recycled materials, provide a large-format, warm to touch, hygienic and non-slip surface finish.

Regardless of the final design of the shower area, walls are either plastered masonry or often stud, fully cladded with plasterboard. The comprehensive wedi Wall sealing set contains everything that is needed to seal 7.5m² of such surfaces: this specially tailored set is a perfect complement to wedi Fundo shower elements, creating a secure and functional shower enclosure, and – beside the 10 year product quality guarantee wedi offers for each and every product in their standard product range - such

installations would also be awarded not only with a CE mark but also, a full wedi system warranty.

wedi building boards are however, strongly recommended for such installations that require levelling, thermal insulation or are planned to receive large format tiling or stone as a surface finish. Their excellent thermal (0.036 W/mK) and loadbearing (133kg/m2) capabilities set them apart from other foam tilebackers on the current market. They are solid, stable and can be easily cut to required dimensions with very little, non-hazardous dust and come with their own Environmental Product Declaration – for perfect compliance with sustainable building.

Saniflo improves facilities at the Southbank

Saniflo UK – part of the SFA Group and a leading designer and manufacturer of pumps, macerators and lifting stations – recently helped London landmark the Queen Elizabeth Hall at the iconic Southbank Centre improve its facilities to provide staff and visitors with a better experience of this special place.

The Queen Elizabeth Hall boasts a stunning wildflower roof garden and café overlooking the Thames.

The wildflower garden is one of the best in Europe attracting bees and insects from all over London, as well as a haven for visitors to socialise, dine and even work when the weather is fine.

Earlier this year, the team running the venue agreed that the venue’s WCs were not ideally located as clients and staff alike had to descend a winding staircase back to the Royal Festival Hall in the main building of the Southbank Centre.

Roof Garden

The Queen Elizabeth Hall contracted Richard Riley from building contractor Eleven London to construct a wooden toilet block with two separate WCs and hand basins. With no gravity drainage available in proximity of the new block, a pumping solution was the only solution to discharge the waste away to the nearest soil stack some 40m away.

The Saniflo technical team assessed the site and the potential run of pipework, and specified a Sanicubic Pro 2 lifting station with twin pumps and a wireless alarm, which Richard and his plumber installed.

This powerful unit uses alternate pumps when operating normally, but in the unlikely event of a pump failure can switch to single pump operation in order to provide continuity of operation at all times.

A wireless alarm offers early warning of any issues. The unit is installed in a cupboard to the rear of the block and

provides quiet, efficient operation.

Richard comments: “As an engineer

I know the benefits of Saniflo pumps for areas with no immediate gravity drainage. Looking at the wide range of commercial pumps available I called the technical team at Saniflo to double check my calculations on a Sanicubic to ensure it was the right product for the job.

I was most impressed when a site visit was offered to verify the pumping distances and flow rates to efficiently discharge waste from the two WCs and basins and we agreed that a Sanicubic Pro 2 lifting station with twin pumps and a wireless alarm would easily cope with the volume and would provide continuity of operation at all times.”

The Queen Elizabeth Hall team say installation of the roof garden toilet block was an excellent investment and that the visitor numbers and the time they spend at venue are up.
