Growth continues but cost pressures mount

The supply chain within the construction industry continued a strong upward trajectory into the first quarter of 2022, according to the latest Construction Products Association (CPA) update.

Bearing in mind the conflict in Ukraine and inflation costs, this is encouraging news for the sector. This is also a fair reflection of what was stated in our earlier State of Trade survey which was released in April.

In Q1, 43% of heavy side manufacturers and 50% of light side manufacturers reported that sales increased compared to 2021 Q4. For SMEs, activity was driven by new build housing and RM&I, which has proven to be one of the most resilient sectors within construction.

Data released from BEIS displayed materials prices rose by 21.9% in Q1 which was considerably outdoing UK CPI inflation, which itself is at a historic high. The primary factor for driving the increasing inflation costs were materials for SMEs and product manufacturers also reported an increase in energy and fuel costs across the board.

Rebecca Larkin, CPA Senior Economist said: “Inflation can be seen throughout the supply chain, starting with manufacturers’ input prices, and is particularly acute for energy-intensive heavy side firms, whilst data from BEIS has shown year-on-year increases of over 20% in construction products and materials prices since August 2021. It is, therefore, no surprise that materials were the key driver of SME builders’ costs in Q1.”

In general, despite the increased pressure of higher costs and inflation, the construction products manufacturing industry has seen a strong start to Q1. Growth in sales is expected to continue during 2022, albeit alongside further upward pressure on input prices. Areas of concern moving forward include the rising costs for fuel, energy and raw materials, which are still a huge factor for costs across the industry.

A new case study from Interpave explores recent urban realm regeneration projects in Tottenham, London exemplifying the synergy of concrete block permeable paving and street trees to address climate change while delivering SuDS.

Contemporary Glass Structures a company which specialise in frameless structural glass products were selected to manufacture and install a flush glazed mirror door for a 4th-floor terrace glass façade as part of extensive renovations of a commercial office building in the heart of Manchester. Drawing on their experience in the fenestration industry Contemporary offered a bespoke solution and specified the Kestrel Aluminium residential door system as the base for the project. The geometry of the door hinges gave the best external glass to glass gap at the

hinge position without the glass on the door leaf clashing with the glass which is silicone bonded to the outside of the outer frame. Also, the slim minimalistic design of the hinges worked well with the aesthetics of the design, meaning they sat in line or just behind the outer glass surface line. The robust sturdy nature of the PAS 24 accredited Kestrel door with its double mechanical spring cleats to each mitre joint also gave the team the confidence to attempt this design for this size of door which at 1200mm wide x 2600mm high weighed nearly 100 kg.

Slotting into BREEAM excellence

The 103 Colmore Row development in the heart of Birmingham’s business district is the city’s tallest office building, and “one of the cleanest and greenest”, achieving BREEAM Excellent. Air movement specialist Gilberts worked closely with BAM Arup to refine the specification of the grilles and diffusers in line with the requirement to achieve ventilation of 12l/person and a constant 22°C(±2°) through GSL linear slot diffusers. The GSLs ventilate almost 90% of the 30 levels including lower ground and basement. Fitted into bulkheads around the perimeter of each office floor, the slot diffusers provide supply and extract of air and ensure a consistent and constant view through the floor to ceiling glazing. The GSLs were also installed into plank ceiling tiles to deliver air on each level.

An award-winning refurbishment at Birkbeck, University of London, has breathed new life into an almost 100-year-old building – and Hunter Douglas Architectural helped to bring it into the 21st century.

Cambridge House, a former 1920s car showroom on Euston Road, was transformed into a spectacular seven-storey teaching and learning facility for the university, with a striking, angular copper-coloured roof extension that cantilevers over the street.

Architect Gibberd Partnership specified Hunter Douglas, the global architectural products company, to supply 568m2 of its HeartFelt range for a number of ceilings in the teaching rooms and in the reception. It was supplied as 40 x 55mm height panels with 70mm module and box-shaped panel. A modular linear felt ceiling system with unique design qualities, it is made from Cradle to Cradle bronze-certified felt and is a sustainable choice as it is 100% recyclable or easily reusable. The range is available in five grey tones and five earth tones.

The new 34,600m2, Grafton Way Building at the University College of London Hospital (UCLH) incorporates more than 100 original pieces of art, printed on Altro Whiterock Digiclad™ (Custom) wall sheets and forming part of the fabric of the building. This ambitious art project was made possible through the use of Altro Whiterock Digiclad (Custom), which is created by reproducing a photographic image or design on to Altro Whiterock wall cladding, with consistent, photographic quality. Hard-coat technology provides scratch-resistant properties for added surface protection. The bespoke wall sheets were printed from digital files using UV cured inks with the print quality and colour resolution described as “simply excellent”.
