Welcome

The recently published Independent Review of the Construction Product Testing Regime by Paul Morrell OBE and Anneliese Day KC has been welcomed by many in the industry.

The report references the Code for Construction Product Information multiple time and sets out recommendations to government and industry on its uptake.

CPI Ltd Chair David Topli e, said: “It’s wonderful to see CCPI receive mention in this report. It’s clear from this Review that the Code has an important role to play in the wider framework of review and reform underway in the sector. Government can rely on it to achieve its objective of driving higher standards in building safety.”

Steve Marr, Interim CEO of CPI Ltd, said: “I’m delighted to see the Code referenced in this Review from Paul Morrell OBE and Anneliese Day KC. The publication of this report marks an important moment for the industry and I’m confident the Code will support manufacturers of construction products on their journey towards culture change in the way in which Product Information is presented. I look forward to working with the team and manufacturers to helping ensure uptake of the Code from industry is strong.”

Peter Caplehorn, Chief Executive of the Construction Products Association, also welcomed publication of the review. “Both authors are known for their intellect and objective approach

Saniflo Sanispeed facilitates workshop change of use

An FE college in Nottinghamshire called on DL Mechanical’s expertise to advise on a change of use project that would improve the facilities for mechanics apprentices. Changing a classroom to a workshop required the installation of a wash down area. A Saniflo Sanispeed+ grey water lifting station was specified to discharge the water from the new washdown area. With its robust 400-watt motor and low activation level of 95mm, the unit was connected to a Zip water heater and the washdown areas to discharge hot and cold waste water through small bore pipework up 3m to an adjoining pipe. This ran by gravity to a soil and vent pipe some 60m away. The Sanispeed+ is ideal for pumping waste water from appliances and sinks in light commercial applications and with four inlets it connects to a range of appliances. It has a working temperature of 35°C but can handle temperatures up to 75°C for short periods. It has a quiet motor and can be installed below counters or in cupboards out of sight if required.

Aurubis

A Nordic Royal Beacon

Ireland’s first Tibetan Buddhist Temple takes a step towards completion with installation of distinctive tiered roofs covered in Nordic Royal golden copper alloy from Aurubis. Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean in West Cork, the new building was designed in the style of a traditional Tibetan temple and built over three floors, each defined by a Nordic Royal clad roof with a curved-profile and deep overhanging eaves. Dragon heads and other sacred ornaments, hand-crafted from copper in northern India then gilded with gold leaf by members of the Dzogchen Beara community, adorn projecting corners and the top roof ridge.

Leon Rossiter, one of the Directors and heading up the Temple project, explained: ‘We trialled different styles of copper facing our harsh marine environment for 18 months. Only the Nordic Royal delivered just what we were looking for. We couldn’t have achieved the look of the temple’s roofs if we had used any other material’. The stunning new copper roofs will be seen for miles along the coastline and from boats at sea.

The innovative Nordic Royal is an alloy of copper with aluminium and zinc, giving it a rich golden through-colour and making it very stable. It has a thin protective oxide layer containing all three alloy elements when produced. As a result, the surface retains its colour and simply loses some of its sheen over time to give a matt finish.

Glidevale Protect responds to latest updates published in STA Advice Note 18

Glidevale Protect , one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of external wall breather membranes, welcomes the recent updates to Structural Timber Association’s STA Advice Note 18 which highlight the importance of providing specifiers with trusted, and tested, technical product information.

First launched in 2019, STA Advice Note 18 – ‘Breather membranes to structural walls’ is a valuable resource for contractors and specifiers involved in structural timber construction projects and the wider offsite construction market. The guide provides detailed information on the use of breather membranes in terms of watertightness, exposure, thermal performance and fixing requirements.

The new amendments to the document were published in April 2023 and have been compiled in collaboration with several specialist manufacturers including representatives from Glidevale Protect.

The revised STA Advice Note 18 provides enhanced guidance on watertightness and specifically the use of W1 and W2 rated external breather membranes. A new section on ‘site-specific exposure to wind-driven rain’ aims to clarify how to

assess if a site is in a very severe area and if it would require a W1 rated breather membrane to provide the necessary resistance against water penetration. Guidance maps from BRE and NHBC are also included to highlight very severe areas of the UK where a W1 membrane is recommended. As one of the contributors to both the original and revised STA Advice Note 18, Glidevale Protect is well placed to assist specifiers and designers in choosing the most appropriate product for their project and offers a full range of both W1 and W2 rated reflective and non-reflective breather membranes for external walls.

As outlined in the original version of the STA Advice Note 18, the new guidance looks specifically at the specification and installation of external breather membranes for cavity facing structural wall panels. The recent updates highlight the need for all manufacturers to be able to verify all product claims, including for reflective membranes to be tested to BS EN 15976 and to claim aged thermal resistance figures which are fully independently certified by a third-party accredited body. Glidevale Protect is committed to providing full technical transparency to its customers and fully supports the renewed focus

on providing specifiers with reliable technical information for external membranes which accurately reflects real life performance figures.

In compliance STA Advice Note 18, its product range of external breather membranes is tested and certified by a UKAS accredited, independent third party. In line with the recommendations outlined in the guidance, Glidevale Protect is also a passionate advocate of improving the way manufacturers communicate the technical performance of a product and specifically, clarifying if the quoted figures are based on aged or unaged values. As well as providing full transparency on the testing of its products, Glidevale Protect’s best practice ensures all its results take into account any brand printing on the lowemissivity surface and in addition, the aged thermal resistance values achieved are based on the membrane installed with the appropriate maximum horizontal fixing centres of 600mm, both which are detailed in STA Advice Note 18.

Specifiers can obtain a copy of the STA Advice Note 18 by contacting Glidevale Protect’s technical team directly at info@glidevaleprotect.com or by calling +44 (0)161 905 5700.

Panoramic Sliding Door: A Perfect blend of design, performance, and functionality

Schüco is proud to announce the launch of its latest innovation, the AS PD 75.HI Panoramic Sliding Door, a ground-breaking product that redefines the standards for sliding door systems.

This state-of-the-art sliding door combines maximum transparency, ease of access, and an array of customisable design options that cater to the unique requirements of architects and clients alike. The Schüco Panoramic Door is characterised by large-scale glass areas from floor to ceiling, with flush-fitted frames

concealed in the walls, ceiling and floor. Only a narrow 35mm interlock section is visible. The result is virtually frameless views.

Architects can emphasise a minimalist appearance with the help of features such as the integrated flush pull grip and the dynamic cover profile. The flush-fitted appearance of the door when closed, as well as its seamless integration into interior design when open, make it an ideal choice for both modern and traditional spaces.

Marmox

Top housebuilder specifying Marmox Showerlay360 across its developments Housebuilder Clarendon Homes has specified the versatile Showerlay360 trays for its latest development, continuing to employ a design solution which has featured across many of its timber framed and traditionally built properties in recent years.

The work is making use of both the 1500 x 800mm and 1850 x 900mm Showerlay bases, together with the manufacturer’s

infinitely adjustable, 360 degree outlets, as the housebuilder’s own plumbers fit out the master en-suites and main bathrooms; with the design of the trays creating the necessary falls within the shower enclosures. Showerlay can be installed over timber or concrete sub-floors and, as with other trays in the Marmox range, are often used in combination with the company’s widely specified Multiboard panels.
