Palace Elisabeth HERITAGE REIMAGINED IN ELEGANCE ON HVAR

Located in the heart of Hvar, just above the city hall and marina, this stunning hotel is a true gem of luxury and history. Its origins trace back to the 13th century, showcasing magnificent Venetian and Austrian architectural styles that tell a story of the past. HISTORY CHARM

This hotel is a seamless blend of modern sophistication and rich history, with its roots stretching back centuries. Palace Elisabeth is more than just a place of luxury; it is a living testament to the vibrant history of the region.

Originally constructed in place of the Duke's Palace, located in the largest town square in Dalmatia, the hotel’s history is deeply intertwined with the magnificence of the past. The palace itself reached its peak during the Venetian rule, when it served as a symbol of power, wealth, and cultural significance. However, following the fall of Venice, the palace began to lose its former brilliance. Over time, it fell into disrepair, eventually being demolished at the turn of the 19th century.

In 1899, the legacy of the Duke’s Palace was revived with the restoration of the building, transformed into the Spa Hotel Empress Elisabeth. The name was chosen to honor the esteemed Austrian Empress Sisi, whose generous patronage funded its reconstruction. Empress Sisi’s devotion to beauty, grace, and culture is reflected in the hotel's refined elegance, combining the historical richness of the palace with the wealth of the time. The restoration

brought the palace back to life, preserving the architectural glow that continues to captivate guests today.

The hotel, with its Venetian and Austrian architectural influences, stands as a reminder of both Hvar's cultural heritage and the timeless appeal of this island. It is not simply a place to stay; it’s an invitation to experience a luxurious journey through history while enjoying all the comforts and sophistication of the modern world.

HERITAGE

Palace Elisabeth welcomes you through an archaeological site, marking the location of the ancient southwestern city wall with cannon holes. Hvar, an essential maritime hub, once served as a safe harbor for ships seeking protection. Researches reveal that before Venetian rule, this site was home to a villa or residence, likely belonging to a ruler. To the left of the entrance, a Mediterranean garden with wild orange trees grows on the spot where ancient orange seeds were discovered. Here, you can also see stairs from the 2nd or 3rd century, which likely served as the formal entrance to a monumental building.

The entrance is guarded by two stone lions that symbolize Venetian authority. The larger lion, dating back to 1462, is the oldest preserved stone lion in Hvar, originally placed on the upper Duke’s Palace by Francesco Giusti, the Duke of Hvar. The smaller lion, made in 1483, was placed on the lower Duke’s Palace. These lions, with one paw on land and the other in the sea, represent the might of the Venetian Republic both on land and at sea.

A dark stone panel at the spa and gym entrance was once the lintel of the Chapel of the Lady of Sorrows, part of the Duke’s Palace. This chapel was built by Duke Pietro Semitecolo, founder of the Hvar Theatre, Europe’s first theatre. Nearby, the Hvar Loggia, first mentioned in 1289, has been a place for public gatherings, auctions, and socializing. Its harmonious arches are adorned with carved human heads, symbolizing different stages of life.

Adjacent to the Loggia, the clock tower, known locally as Leroj, has served as Hvar’s public clock since the 15th century. East of the hotel lies the Church of St. Cosmas and Damian, the oldest preserved church in Hvar, built around 1430. Today, it serves as a venue for weddings and baptisms.
