We need to talk about the smoking. Because a ban means a ban - and a ban that isn’t enforced is no ban at all. As a general rule, banning anything is usually a second-best solution. But it should be apparent that lifesaving hospitals and life-threatening smoking is not exactly a match made in heaven. The notorious death of a medical professional in Melbourne, through smoking-related argy-bargy, was a case in point. It seems remarkable that, with a hospital smoking ban implemented, the authorities have been unable to hand out one penalty notice. Not one. In fact, we are told, the ashtrays are strategically placed under the “no smoking“ signs - and that’s no joke. Now, it may be that the ban has not been well thought out. It may equally be that the wrong bodies have been chosen to enforce (or in this case, not enforce) it. But, frankly, we expect better - and it’s time for the powers that be to put up or shut up. So if the ban’s on, let’s see some enforcement. And if it’s not, then let’s hear no more of it ... and someone will need to take those “no smoking“ signs down. Because any medical professional will tell you that smoking can’t be a little bit banned ... any more than you can be a little bit pregnant. - Jason Beck

STOMP… TURNS ORDINARY INTO MUSICAL MAGIC! WIN TICKETS… The Broadway, West End and international sensation STOMP is back and it’s better than ever! Following a sell-out visit in 2013, STOMP returns to Melbourne’s Comedy Theatre from 1 May with its unstoppable energy and ‘pure stage magic’. Everything from Zippo lighters, bin lids, and even the kitchen sink are used to hammer out an explosively feel-good rhythm enjoyed by audiences of all ages. Still remaining is STOMP’s signature high-octane mix of slick choreography, tight ensemble work, industrial percussion, and continuous comedy; as the irrepressible troupe turn brooms into soft shoe partners, clapping into intricate conversations and water cooler
