Franklin Knight is professor emeritus of history at Johns Hopkins University, and has been a visiting lecturer at many universities throughout Spain. He has held numerous research fellowships and has been featured on NPR, the BBC, and several television programs. Franklin will join our Cruising Southern Spain and Portugal voyage—see page 15.

2 Katryn Wiese is a professor of geology and oceanography at City College of San Francisco, where she has taught field, lab, and lecture classes since 1995. She studied earth and ocean sciences at Caltech, Oregon State University, and Stanford University, and focused her early research experiences on volcanic processes in Australia, Iceland, and the seafloor. Katryn will join our Cruising Arctic Norway voyage—see page 34. 3 James Zimbelman is senior geologist emeritus at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum (NASM) where he has served as the chairman of the Center for Earth and Planetary Studies. During his 32 years at NASM, he was involved in the analysis of high-resolution spacecraft imaging and geophysical data of the Earth, and other geologic studies of terrestrial planets. Jim will join our Iceland Voyage—see page 24. 4 Gail Cornell is an architectural historian, whose research and lectures on the history of architecture have taken her all over the world. A graduate of Harvard University’s graduate School of Design, she is an adjunct faculty member of New York University and a lecturer on architecture, design, and art at the Museum of Modern Art. Gail will join our Cruising Southern Spain and Portugal voyage—see page 15.
Don Wilson is curator emeritus of mammals at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History and was named senior scientist in January 2000. Don was director of the Smithsonian’s biodiversity programs for ten years, and for the last 50 years, his work has taken him around the world conducting field work and research. Don will join our Cruising Arctic Norway voyage—see page 34. 5

Kirt Kempter is a Fulbright Fellow and Ph.D. graduate from the University of Texas at Austin. For the past 11 years, Kirt has worked for the New Mexico STATEMAP program, studying the geologic history of northern New Mexico. Kirt is also an instructor for the NASA astronaut training program, teaching astronaut candidates geologic mapping techniques. Kirt will join our Voyage Along the Great Lakes—see page 27.

Day 1 — Valletta, Malta: Arrive in Valletta and board the ship. Admire the golden-hued city as you cruise out of one of Europe’s loveliest harbors. Day 2 — Agrigento, Sicily, Italy: Your first stop in Sicily is Porto Empedocle. Travel inland to the World Heritage site of Agrigento, where seven ancient temples line a ridge in the Valley of the Temples. Tour the evocative site, once one of the most powerful cities in the Mediterranean. Day 3 — Erice and Segesta: Anchor in Trapani and journey to the beautiful hilltop village of Erice. Meander the medieval streets, taking in expansive views of Erice’s castles and the coast. Continue to the ancient city of Segesta to visit its magnificent Doric temple. Day 4 — Palermo: Spend today in Palermo, a city ruled over the centuries by the Carthaginians, the Romans, the Arabs, and the Normans. Discover unique Arab-Norman architecture at cathedrals and palaces built at the height of the city’s prosperity in the 12th century and recognized together as a World Heritage site.

Day 6 — Taormina, Sicily: Poised on the Ionian Sea against a backdrop of craggy headlands, Taormina has long drawn writers and philosophers. Discover the town on a guided walking tour and visit the Greek theater, where live performances still take place today. Or travel to Mount Etna, another World Heritage site, and enjoy a tasting of local wines while taking in views from its rugged slopes to the coast. Days 7 & 8 — Syracuse and Ortigia/Valletta, Malta: Your final stop is Syracuse, an ancient city once so powerful it rivaled Athens and Rome. Explore the archaeological park, which includes a Greek theater and one of the world’s largest Roman amphitheaters. See the Ear of Dionysius cave and stroll amid stunning architecture on the island of Ortigia. After breakfast the next day, disembark in Valletta and transfer to airport. Set sail from Venice along Croatia’s island-studded coast to the Ionian Sea, encountering six World Heritage sites in four countries and exploring the legacy of the Greeks, Romans, Venetians, and more. Itinerary Day 1 — Venice, Italy: Arrive in Venice and board the ship this afternoon. Set sail from the city’s World Heritage-listed lagoon. Day 2 — Rovinj, Croatia: Rovinj was the seat of Venetian power on the Istria Peninsula for five centuries. Witness the Venetian influence on a walking tour of the historic center, including the Basilica of Saint Euphemia and the awardwinning Batana Eco-Museum. Day 1 — Athens, Greece: Arrive in Athens and board the ship. Enjoy dinner as you set sail on the Aegean Sea. Day 2 — Patmos: The Dodecanese island of Patmos looms large in the history of Christianity: it was to this rugged island that St. John the Evangelist was banished. Set out on a tour of the Monastery of St. John, still an active place of religious study and a pilgrimage site, and discover its incredible collection of Byzantine art. Continue to the Cave of the Apocalypse and its whitewashed chapel, and see the grotto where St. John is said to have received the visions of the Apocalypse. Day 3 — Symi: Symi is a gem of an island, with picture-perfect seaside villages stacked up the hillsides and cypress forests, vineyards, and olive orchards blanketing the interior. Spend today exploring the island and its charming port of Gialos. Stroll along the quays, lined with brightly painted houses, and take in superb views of the coast from the upper town. 12

Day 4 — Amorgos: Experience rugged and beautiful Amorgos, the easternmost island in the Cyclades. Meet monks at the 11thcentury Monastery of Hozoviotissa and take a guided tour of picturesque Chora. Or walk through olive groves in Lagada and see a demonstration of a traditional olive press. Visit a typical Cycladic home to learn the age-old practice of distilling essential oils. Day 5 — Santorini and Folegandros: Make sure you’re on deck as the ship sails into the breathtaking Santorini caldera. Encountering the gigantic scale and majesty of the high cliffs surrounding this ancient crater is one of the highlights of the cruise. Anchor off the mountainous island of Folegandros, and spend the afternoon exploring its blue-and-white main town, Chora. Day 6 — Delos and Mykonos: The mythical birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, Delos is one of the most sacred places in the Greek world. Day 4 — Málaga, Spain and Granada: After a morning to explore Málaga, spend the evening in Granada, seat of the last Moorish kingdom in Spain. Visit the Cathedral and Royal Chapel, final resting place of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, and explore the incomparable palaces and courtyards of the Alhambra on a private evening tour. Day 5 — Marbella or Ronda: Arrive this morning in Marbella. Visit its whitewashed old town and a collection of sculptures by Salvador Dalí, or travel to cliff-top Ronda. Uncover layers of history amid the twisting streets of its Moorishinfluenced center, and see the Plaza de Toros, Spain’s oldest bullfighting ring and one of its most architecturally beautiful. Day 6 — Seville or Vejer de la Frontera: Anchor in Cadiz and travel to Seville. Stroll through the Murillo Gardens and visit the Real Alcazar, the Gothic Cathedral, and La Giralda bell tower—together considered a World Heritage site. Explore the Barrio de Santa Cruz, the city’s former Jewish quarter. Day 1 — Buenos Aires, Argentina: Arrive in Buenos Aires and check into your hotel. Enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure. Day 2 — Ushuaia: Fly to Ushuaia, and enjoy an excursion to Tierra del Fuego National Park. Day 5 — Sailing to the Ice Floe: Sail up to the edge of the ice floe, and, conditions permitting, ride a Zodiac amid these slabs of ice, which can harbor seabirds, seals, and polar bears. Day 6 — Måkeøyane and Monaco Glacier: Cruise south to explore the Måkeøyane Archipelago. Continue to majestic Monaco Glacier, and watch for ice calving off its towering, blue-tinged wall. Polar bears and whales can often be spotted here. Day 7 — Nordvest-Spitsbergen National Park: Admire the spectacular ice formations of Raudfjorden.
