Recognising and celebrating the excellent all-round performance of organisations

Welcome to the fourteenth Midlands Excellence Awards Ceremony – our latest celebration of the excellent all-round performance of organisations.

Midlands Excellence Founded in 1996 as a registered charity, Midlands Excellence aims to improve the region’s economy by making excellence accessible to all. This is achieved by running engaging events and creating vibrant communities of organisations dedicated to sharing best practice. Midlands Excellence continues to actively promote the EFQM (European Foundation for Quality Management) Excellence Model and provides a wide range of support to organisations using this proven approach.

Investors in Excellence Investors in Excellence Limited (IiE) is the not-forprofit subsidiary of Midlands Excellence and works with hundreds of organisations across the UK and internationally to support their improvement activity. Chairman’s message Welcome to the Midlands Excellence Awards and our guest speaker Sir Ranulph Fiennes who is a true ambassador for excellence. Now in the fourteenth year, our annual awards are all about celebrating success and we’re delighted to be joined tonight by more than 1,100 business leaders from across the United Kingdom. Congratulations go to our winners and finalists as well as those organisations we are recognising this evening for achieving the Investors in Excellence Standard. All the organisations we recognise have been thoroughly assessed and found to be achieving continuously improving results. Our rigorous assessment programme highlights strengths and also identifies significant opportunities for improvement. We remain enormously grateful to our team of hard working and enthusiastic volunteer assessors, many of whom are here this evening. I also want to thank our distinguished panel of judges, terrific sponsors and numerous committed supporters. In addition I pay tribute to the fantastic efforts of the staff and trustees of Midlands Excellence as well as its subsidiary Investors in Excellence. In today’s economic climate a firm commitment to excellence is the best way forward and I encourage everyone here to achieve greater prosperity by engaging in our activities. Alan Jones OBE Chairman, Midlands Excellence

“In today’s economic climate, a firm commitment to excellence is the best way forward.”

“ Excellence without exception is a proven route to success”

Chief Executive’s message The body of empirical evidence proving that investing in excellence delivers sustainable and tangible bottom line benefits continues to grow. Yet, I’m still often challenged with: “If it’s so good, why doesn’t everyone do it?” The reality, like all investment decisions, is that it is optional. Reaping the benefits will require: •

Committed and focused leadership

Sustained effort and focus on the things that really matter

Fully harnessing the power of your people

Accepting that good is never good enough

It is a huge privilege to recognise such a wide range of inspirational organisations that are seeing a fantastic return on their investment in excellence and I applaud all involved for relentlessly improving their own organisations and contributing to this great country of ours. The evidence is compelling and the tough economic conditions require us all to take positive action. Our dedicated and passionate team are ready to help you in every way possible to take that action. Many congratulations to everyone involved this evening and thank you all for your support. I hope you will leave inspired and ready to act now. It will be one of the best investment decisions you will ever make. Ian Nield Chief Executive 9

“ Congratulations to all of the Midlands Excellence finalists, to those going on to receive an award and all organisations investing in excellence. This really demonstrates your commitment and dedication to improve your performance, which every organisation needs in abundance to overcome challenges and set new standards for achievement” Photograph: ‘The North Face of the Eiger’ by Ian Parnell

Guest Speaker Sir Ranulph Fiennes the world’s greatest living explorer (Guinness Book of Records 1984)

Since 1970, Sir Ranulph Fiennes has amazed and inspired his supporters with his relentless endeavours of strength, drive and determination, which have led not only to a multitude of endurance records, but also raised more than an incredible £14 million for UK charities, including Marie Curie Cancer Care and the British Heart Foundation. This extraordinary man has raised this money through 22 major expeditions to remote parts of the world including both Poles. When he is not exploring, Sir Ranulph also finds time to write about his adventures and is the author of 18 books, including The Feather Men (a UK No 1 Best Seller), and his latest autobiography, Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know. We are delighted Sir Ranulph will be sharing his exceptional achievements and experiences and describing what has driven him to become so determined to succeed.

Awards Programme Our awards finalists have successfully demonstrated their performance against the EFQM (European Foundation for Quality Management) Excellence Model, a proven, non prescriptive framework with nine key criteria. The criteria cover all aspects of organisational performance from leadership and strategy, to people management, process and results. The finalists were selected based on the outcome of an independent assessment, undertaken by expert Midlands Excellence Assessors. Working in teams, the assessors evaluate the entrant’s detailed submission against the EFQM Excellence Model’s demanding criteria and validate their findings during a one day site visit. To complete the process, the organisation receives a detailed feedback report, highlighting strengths and areas for future improvement. Standards are extremely high and in certain cases, the jury may decide not to present an award in a particular category, even though finalists have been selected. The jury is also at liberty to present a Highly Commended Award to an organisation that it feels has narrowly failed to reach the level of excellence required to receive a main award. We have already announced our finalists and tonight, on stage, we will announce our winners. Finalists

organisations who stand out from the crowd

Highly Commended exemplary organisations who have demonstrated high levels of positive performance Winner the ultimate accolade which recognises achievement of all-round excellent performance 14

Introducing your evening’s...

Excellent entertainment Saxophonist: Richi Jones Back by popular demand - tonight’s pre-dinner entertainment is provided by multi-talented 14 year old Richi Jones. A pupil at Bridgnorth Endowed School in Shropshire, Richi has been playing the saxophone for around four and a half years. He was inspired to take up the sax by one of the American Pie Films that featured a saxophone solo. His first public appearance was in May 2008. Since then he’s been hailed as a highly accomplished performer. A soloist in his musical world, Richi is a team player when it comes to the other love of his life – football. He has been a goalkeeper at Wolverhampton Wanderers FC since the age of eight. Currently in his seventh season for the club, he is now a member of the under 15/16 squad and hopes to obtain a football scholarship at the end of next season with the aim of becoming a full time professional. Since his first public appearance in 2008 Richi has played at various prestigious events around the country, both as a soloist and alongside other live musicians.
