Purpose – why we’re doing this
Methodology – data sources
The College has a diverse student body that reflects the local community the school serves and we are fully committed to being a welcoming and inclusive environment.
The data for this analysis has been taken from the following sources. For the three local authority boroughs bordering the school (Bromley, Greenwich, Lewisham), the data has been sourced from official Office for National Statistics (ONS) in 2020 and 2022.
For the data on students, this has been taken from school registration records where students (or their parents) have provided it at the time of entry to the school. For staff data, this is taken from recruitment data voluntarily given at the time they make their applications to the school.
Having an accurate set of data and findings gives us a robust base from which to identify our strengths and weaknesses and acts as a spur for initiatives to improve our inclusion metrics. 03
We know we can do more, especially with regards to the staff recruitment and retention, to make the school more diverse and reflective of wider society and social demographics of south London.
It should be noted that the ethnicity categories for the school and local authorities (ONS) are not identical. For our analysis, we have sought to match and align them as closely as possible in order to make meaningful comparisons. 04

Key Findings Our research for 2022 shows that our student body is either in line with or exceeds the representation of most categories of ethnicity. For instance, In 2022, more than 20% of our students came from an Asian/Asian British background. This is more than double the proportion of those communities in the boroughs of Bromley, Greenwich and Lewisham (aggregated) and more than three times the level of Asian/ Asian British staff who make up just under 6% of the school’s staff body.

Black and Black-British account for nearly 20% of the local community. At Eltham College, less than 4% of our students come from these communities and only 0.7% of our staff come from Black or Black British background.

However, the largest racial group across all categories is White British/Irish/Other: around 60% of students are from this demographic which is almost exactly reflects the proportion in the local community. Amongst our staff body, this proportion rises to nearly 80%.
11
%
A significant number of staff – nearly 11% - did not provide the voluntary background data on ethnicity. This falls to only 3% of students and no-one from the local community.
The picture is improved for those from mixed race backgrounds (White plus Black or Asian): while this group accounts for 6.5% of the local community, nearly 10% of students have a mixed race background and more than 3% of Eltham staff do too.

Conclusion – next steps
We must do more to improve recruitment of staff to make it reflect more the local community as well as the student population. A number of initiatives to address this are underway, not least our Teaching Insight Programme, is designed to attract more applications to Eltham College from young undergraduates from under-represented groups considering a career in teaching.
