You're invited to a tea party to celebrate the release of the upcoming Downton Abbey film on September 20th. Join us for trivia, prizes, and a surprise guest! The Exciting World of Exoplanets! Thursday, July 25 6:30 p.m.

Library Hours: Monday—Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday

Exoplanets, or planets in other solar systems, are the fastest-growing topic in astronomy. This lecture provides an overview of the science: how astronomers detect them, the latest findings in the field, as well as a discussion of the possibility of life elsewhere in the universe. Please bring Are we curiosity, an open mind, and any exoplanet-related Alone? questions! Presented by Mark Giovinazzi. Registration required.

Visit a Museum this Summer!

Beginning June 28th, borrow one of our museum passes and send us a selfie while you’re there (ahughes@ftlnj.org)! We’ll post it to our Facebook page and enter you into our weekly Summer Reading Giveaway! We have passes available for: Garden State Discovery Museum, Grounds for Sculpture, Museum of the American Revolution, Mutter Museum, and Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge. Restrictions apply for each pass. Contact the library for more information.

Upcoming Programs and Events Page Turners Book Discussion Group Tuesday, July 2 7:00 p.m. Open to adults only, ages eighteen and up, the Page Turners meet monthly to discuss a book read by the members. We will be discussing member favorites this month. If you are interested in joining the group, please contact the library.

Graphic Novel Discussion Group for Teens Tuesday, July 9 4:00 p.m.

Aliens, space colonies, terraforming, giant robots and more! Open to grades 7 to 12. Registration is required.

Teen Advisory Board Meeting Thursday, July 16 6:30 p.m.

Teens, want to gain extra community service hours while helping the library in a fun and innovative way? Every month, we will hold a meeting to come up with and coordinate ideas for the library. Open to grades 7 through 12. Registration required and available online via our website under “Quick Links” or by phone.

Crafternoons at the Library (rescheduled from June 27) Thursday, July 25 3:00 p.m. We’ll be making plastic-dipped flowers. All materials will be supplied. Open to adults only. Registration is required.

Dungeons and Dragons: Stars Wars Wednesday, July 31 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Take a step into space this summer and play some Star Wars D20. This month, we will put our characters on a planet that is about to be destroyed by the Death Star. What will they do? The options have many benefits and consequences. Open to grades 6 to 12. Registration required.

Mobile Printing Available With our new MobilePrint Service™, you can use your personal computer or mobile device to print to the library’s printers from anywhere. Simply submit documents for printing and come to the library to release and pick up your document. Regular printing charges apply. 1000 Books Before Kindergarten We invite you to read 1000 books with your child before he/she starts Kindergarten. This program encourages parents to read with their children as a way to develop early literacy, a love of reading, and to prepare for school. Registration required. Additionally, there is an App available for both iPhone and Android which will make it easy to track your progress. It allows you to scan books into your permanent library, then just simply click the books that you have read. It then tracks your progress towards completing your 1000 books. It also has the ability to track multiple readers. For more information, please ask a librarian.

2018 Summer ReadingReading Program Preview 2019 Summer Program

Music Play Patrol Tuesday, July 9 3:00 p.m.

Join us for a fun afternoon of singing, dancing, instrument play, and other interactive silliness! We will explore the sounds of space using unique instruments and sound processors. Using a voice box vocoder and microphone, we will change our voice to sound like aliens and creatures from beyond. Also, we will make music using a theremin, an instrument that can be played without any physical contact that was used for sound effects in early sci-fi films. Open to ages 3 and up. Get Ready to Blast Off with the “Out of This World Magic Show” Tuesday, July 23 3:00 p.m.

Steve Woyce, magician and family entertainer, returns with an all new high-energy, comedy magic show. Help Steve make the moon disappear, meet a forgetful librarian from a distant planet, and help Saturn Sam blast into outer space! Packed with tons of audience participation, this is one Summer Reading show that you don’t want to miss! Open to all ages. No registration required. American Swedish Historical Museum presents… “Swedes in Space” Tuesday, July 30 3:00 p.m.

“Blast Off to Fun” with Andrew’s Big Show Tuesday, July 16 3:00 p.m.

Andrew’s Big Show is sure to be a big hit with interactive juggling, zany comedy, circus tricks, and more. Special for this year, Andrew will have space-themed music and a few other outer worldly surprises. Patrons of all ages will be laughing, smiling and waiting for more. No registration required.

Discover the wonders of space and learn what it takes to become an astronaut. Families will explore the life of astronauts and their intensive training to prepare for space. Participants will experience astronaut training then blast-off into space to complete a mission to the moon! This program will help children practice STEM and team -building skills through hands-on-activities. We will end our program with making our own space shuttles to take home. Open to grades 1 to 6. Registration is required. Space is limited.


2019 Summer Reading Program Wee Read Story Times Wednesdays, 10:30 a.m. July 10 thru July 31

Walk-in Craft Friday, July 19 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Ages 3 to 5 with a caregiver. Registration is required.

Paint your own “spacey” tote bag. All materials supplied. Suggested ages 5 to 12 with a caregiver. No registration required.

STEAM Activity: Balloon Rockets Fridays, July 26 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Make rockets out of plastic bottles, and using balloons to help them fly, see how far and fast they go! Open to children in grades 3 to 6 with parent/guardian. Registration required.

STEAM Activity: Light Up Rocket Bookmark Friday, July 12 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

With a combination of simple origami and easy electrical engineering, your rocket bookmark will take you to any world with the power of reading! Open to grades 3 to 6 accompanied by an adult. Registration required.

Lego League Tuesday, July 30 6:30 p. m. Let’s build rockets! Open to ages 8 to 12. Registration is required.

Program Wrap Up at Rowan University Planetarium To wrap up our “Universe of Stories” summer reading program, we invite you to join us for a special presentation of the planetarium shows listed below. Transportation is not provided. We will meet at the Edelman Planetarium. Registration is required. When registering, please include your name and your child’s name and age. To register, call the library at (856)694-2833, extension 1. **The Edelman Planetarium is located at 201 Mullica Hill Road, Glassboro, NJ. Parking for this event is in Lot C, located at the corner of James Bowe Blvd. and Carpenter Street. Be prepared for a ten minute walk to the Science Hall.
