The BIG Re-Think Interior Techniques in Interior Design Practices Master Tutor: Prof. Kireet Patel Studio Tutors: Rishav Jain and Aparajita Basu Assistants: Shail Sheth and Paramdeep Singh Dayani

Brief Outline: The intention of this studio is to develop a multitude of notions, approaches, positions and arguments with reference to interior techniques and its implications on the interior design practice. Here interior technique is defined as “A method, tool and medium that modifies, alters, conceals, exposes an interior element, thus transforming the transformable quality of the space.” The studio offers an opportunity to develop a design position in different contexts by questioning preconceived notions of interior design. It emphasizes the relationship between Interior techniques and its expression, identity and design outcome. The first four weeks are part of the common foundation program, where students from all streams work together to develop common skills and abilities. The later part of the studio is largely divided into two modules: the first module builds an argument on interior techniques through existing projects and the second module intends to develop a systematic approach to the application of the argument in three different contexts. It is an opportunity to develop an individual design position for disparate sites keeping the program constant.

Learning Outcomes: After completing this studio unit, the student will be able to: • Ability to develop a systematic argument/position/ approach on the interdependence between interior techniques and practice. • Ability to translate/represent the design argument/ position/approach through 3- dimensional and material based outcomes. • Ability to organize and evaluate the programmatic and pragmatic potential of derived design position. • Ability to build a design vocabulary and test it through the selected context (site/program).

(As per the studio proposal*)

Week 01-02 | FD PG Common Exercises

Objectory Process: Regular usage for designer is clutch pencil. Which is essential tool for drawing, doodling or ideating any ideas. The Concept of this exercise was to learn accuracy, tolerance and precision through any object. It also aims to develop a methodology to identify, list, and analyses objects by dismantling its parts and components. The final deliverable demonstrates precision by way of observing and representing. The study of tolerance is achieved through identifying the assembly of parts, materials, and accuracy by way of orthographic and exploded axonometric/isometric drawings. Identify and list materials with their specifications used in each part and its components. Analyze the relationships between shapes, sizes, proportion, geometry, and assembly of parts and components with technical orthographic drawings such as plans, sections & elevations.

Kit of parts of clutch pencil to understand the junction of every component. How each part of getting use. Role of every parts are different from each of them. There are various ways to hold clutch pencil.

Week 03-04 | FD PG Common Exercises

Factory Process: To design Domas magazine stand. We as possibly to design on ground, on wall or suspend from ceiling. We have choosed suspended from ceiling. The concept was planning of making. Give shape and dimension to the given materials for appropriate usage. Identify and use appropriate fixing hardware and accessories. Develop awareness about the inputs of the Design process in the ‘making’. Manipulate and apply the act of assembly as a predominant function of the design process.

Developing the Argument Brief: The concept of this exercise was understanding of what is an Interior technique by examining various built projects of different a)Historical /era centered project, b) standardized mass customized project and c) individual identity-driven projects. The titration of selecting was based on the ‘role of interior designer’ across a multitude of projects. It was in matrix formate with their methods of interior techniques like modify, alter, conceal, expose, volume, light, interaction, etc. These methods can be identified in interior elements, medium, material and articulation in the whole or part of the project. After understanding all projects, Light seem to play major role in interior design. That transform space from bright to dull, solid to transparent. That also create drama in the space. Light reflect on the interior elements and that also enhance it and that element changes interior space experience. Filtration of light through punctures or and module that perceive various experience to the user. Light also connect outside and interior spaces.

Ideating Roles of an Interior Designer

Week 06-07 | FD PG Module 02

Ideating Role 1 of Interior Designer Brief: Historical practices through a Ruin site was selected for translate the argument , transform the space through interior techniques. The Experience of space Organization and space planning Details of elements, junctions. Argument- Filtering of light could enhance interior spacethus it transform interior space. After developing the argument, translated into Ruins site. We required to exhibites artist Leonardo Da Vinci’s Dream machines. The site has it is own identity. That has some rawness in the space. So by doing interior innervation in the space. the identity of space should be there. Keeping that in mind all spaces are designed through photo-montages. Filtration of light could achieve through various approaches like giving modulation of heights. Adding layers of elements on the surfaces. Creating narrow spaces to wider spaces. That changes the experience of the space.

Week 11-14 | FD PG Module 02

Ideating Role 3 of Interior Designer Brief: The concept of this exercise was to initially design an interior without site. My argument related with light. So, combing light and modulation of height spaces are created. For that major spaces is divided in three different levels to have experience of space from various heights and angles. Further spaces are divided with three various walls that include sense of solidity, semi transparent and frame work. That give various visual connection and that also guide user to move further. The whole circulation idea is to have defy. Three types of wall with solidity, perforation and frame structured wall are used. There aslo give visual connection to the users. These wall also has sense of filtration. Artist Leonardo Da Vinci’s dream machines are places on various levels to perceive different approach. From entrance all spaces are being narrow to wide. All walls are intersecting with different vanishing points. All vertical wall are dividing spaces and all horizontal base are creating spaces.

Creating levels and vertical louvres create drama in the space

Various types of surface are overlapped together and created patten on floor. Layering of all materials.

Space divided in th parts with various heights. Three modules are places in different areas to get perceiv space in different angle

Three various types of walls with solid, punctured and frame structure

Sectional Perspective - Three different identitiy walls seeing here. They all are diving space and horizontal base are creating space in that space. small Space with in space. Perforation in the roof get natural light in. roof is also modulating heights. wall are having punctures to move another space. All exhibits are seeing from different levels.
