A Note From the Publisher
We began working diligently on the Feb/March issue of 91302 Magazine right after our last issue, which came out right before Thanksgiving. We chose a “Love & Passion” theme to weave together stories of local artists, photographers, writers, actors, and entertainers who are passionate about their fields of endeavor. On Tuesday, January 7th, we witnessed another form of passion from Mother Nature herself, as she unleashed one of the most destructive wildfires fires in California history. Fanned by the Santa Ana winds travelling over 80 mph, we watched the sheer wrath of the flames and force of destruction that devastated the beautiful homes, businesses, and terrain of our friends, family, and loved ones in and around the Pacific Palisades, Malibu, and other areas of Southern California.
Within days, another six fires began, consuming homes in our neighboring communities, including the Kenneth Fire that forced the evacuation of residents and threatened homes in the Calabasas, Hidden Hills, West Hills, Woodland Hills, Bell Canyon, and Agoura Hills communities. While most homes and properties in our area are standing at the time of this writing, many people were affected by evacuations from their homes, and significant lengthy power outages.
While we await the final outcome of these fires, I hope we can all find the love and passion to help those less fortunate who will desperately need our help, prayers, donations, and support in the months ahead. We also give thanks and express our sincere gratitude to the firefighters, law enforcement, first responders, and elected officials who have worked tirelessly to keep our communities safe during this challenging time.
On behalf of our team at 91302 Magazine, we hope you enjoy this issue and encourage you to share your stories, ideas, and feedback to help us be the best reflection of our wonderful community.

Caring Calabasas Seniors
By Lee Aubin
The Caring Calabasas Club (CCC) is known for doing myriad acts of kindness for the community. Recently, the club organized a month-long event to collect and donate eyeglasses for those who are visually impaired and financially unable to purchase eyeglasses. The final donation count was 810 pairs of eyeglasses and 382 eyeglass cases given to the Malibu chapter of the Lions Club.
According to Karen Nebel, the project point person, "It truly took a village to hold such a successful event." Carol Davis, leader of the CCC, provided guidance and support for the collection project, collaborating with many members, friends, and family members affiliated with the Calabasas Senior Center. Ryan Lok, a high school student attending Agoura High School, volunteered his time to count the glasses, finding the majority in good condition.
The Malibu Lions Club was overwhelmed with gratitude by the generous donations. Amin Ballout, president of the club, and Mrs. Sanaa Ballout, member, happily drove to Calabasas to gather the donations and begin the process of getting them to those in need.
The Caring Calabasas Club is a service club at the Calabasas Senior Center that engages seniors in providing charitable contributions by collecting goods and crafting needed items and by doing other charitable work. CCC provides a vehicle for social interaction on a meaningful level. Club members choose worthy, established charities with which to network, creating potential for a multi-generational, kinder, cooperative community. The club is open to like-minded individuals; no special skill is required—only a desire to contribute time and talent while having fun. l

Unlocking the joy of reading for children
through braille
Four hundred visually impaired children’s lives were changed for the better by the combined efforts of the members of the Caring Calabasas Club and the Caruso Day of Service, when 65 volunteers, in collaboration with the Braille Institute, prepared 400 braille-enabled storybooks and assembled 1000 instructional toys (on how to tie your shoes) at the Calabasas Community Center.
The power of being able to read resonated with each of the participants as they realized they were helping to introduce blind pre-school children to the world of books. Studies for the National Federation for the Blind show that children with visual impairments who learn braille are more likely to succeed in school and the workplace.
The Caruso organization supports an annual day of service wherein itsemployees are granted a paid day off to give back to the communities they serve. This year they again joined the Caring Calabasas Club, an inspiring group of seniors dedicated to charitable work, and both worked with the Braille Institute’s Special Collection Program to provide free braille storybooks to children across the country. In addition, the Calabasas Children’s Library is being gifted a collection of books for their patrons.
It can best be summed up by a quote from Rick Caruso when he said, “It’s more than just volunteering—it’s about making a meaningful impact on others and ourselves.” l

STANDING STRONG During Fire Season
By Britt Aaronson
Only seven days into the New Year, the Palisades Fire erupted, unleashing widespread devastation across Los Angeles County. Residents of Topanga and Monte Nido evacuated as 5,000 homes and businesses burned to the ground in the Pacific Palisades, Malibu, Santa Monica, and Brentwood. Fierce winds also sparked the Kenneth fire, which scorched over 1,000 acres in the hills north of the 101 Freeway, threatening homes and compelling evacuations in West Hills, Calabasas, and Hidden Hills.
The rocky bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean served as the ignition point for the Palisades Fire, which has burned 23,000 acres at the time of this writing. Simultaneously, the Eaton Fire consumed the Pasadena suburb of Altadena, destroying or damaging around 7,000 structures across 14,000 acres, while the Hurst fire burned near Sylmar.
Within days, several communities were destroyed and the region irreparably changed by numerous infernos blazing across the L.A. Basin. Even with thousands of firefighters battling wildfires across 45 square miles of a densely populated county, tragically at least 25 people have died, and more than 100,000 have been forced to flee their homes.
Fire season is year-round, with one quarter of our state and more than 25 million acres classified under very high or extreme
fire threat. Close to 2,500 firefighters fought the burning of almost 20,000 acres in the Mountain Fire after the Santa Ana winds ignited the hills above Moorpark and Camarillo in November. Weeks later, on a late December evening, flames from the Franklin Fire were first sighted in Malibu Canyon on the hillsides adjacent to Pepperdine, which sits about 10 miles north of the Palisades Fire. Almost 2,000 firefighters were deployed in the Franklin Fire, with 4,037 acres burned, destroying 20 structures and damaging 28 structures in Malibu. In these incidents, CAL FIRE, the L.A. County Fire and Sheriff’s departments, and other agencies quickly responded with firefighting, evacuations, and community support.
Cities collaborate during emergencies, such as Calabasas and Malibu who together opened an emergency operations center located at Calabasas City Hall to monitor and share the situation with neighbors. Assisting professional fire agencies are over 450 volunteer fire departments throughout California. Two of the most organized local volunteer firefighting teams activated during the Palisades and Kenneth fires are Malibu’s Community Fire Brigade and the Bell Canyon Volunteer Wildland Fire Department (BCVWFD). Members are trained wildland firefighters certified by the California Office of the State Fire Marshal, which is the official fire training program
Firefighters from the Bell Canyon Volunteer Wildland Fire Department
of Los Angeles firefighters. The Malibu Community Fire Brigade formed last year and the Bell Canyon Volunteer Wildland Fire Department formed in response to the Woolsey Fire after it destroyed 39 homes in the community. The Bell Canyon Volunteer Wildland Fire Department is made up of Firefighter Type 1s who specialize in urban interface wildland and structure protection and assist firefighters and help neighbors. All but two of the 30 members are residents, with seven being trained EMTs. They do, however, remind residents that they are not a replacement for a 911 call— even though their primary mission is to protect residents and property by offering emergency and medical services, including search and rescue. Since 2020, the Bell Canyon Volunteer Wildland Fire Department has responded to 580 service calls, saving the county money and resources. Their three trucks respond to mudslides and animal assistance calls for lost dogs, injured coyotes, and deer. They average 70 rattlesnake calls a year, which would keep a L.A. City fire truck and firefighters busy for 45 minutes.
Bell Canyon resident and BCVWFD Fire Chief FFT1 PIO EMT Garrett Clancy is one force behind the volunteer department's formation. He was inspired to aid in the safety of his community based on two things. “I come from a firefighting family,” says Clancy. “And the town that I am from in Massachusetts has the oldest continuously operating volunteer fire department in the country. I grew up with that. The other side of it is I am a filmmaker. Putting together a fire department is like being a film producer. You gather all the right people and elements to put together the project. That skill set was invaluable for doing this.”
Dr. Allie Tashnek is a local veterinarian who also helps bridge the gap between professional emergency agencies and communities. She serves as a member of the Ventura County Emergency Volunteer Rescue Team (EVRT), which is an oncall emergency volunteer group engaged by the Ventura County Animal Services during declared disasters. Her team assisted in the evacuation of livestock and animals during recent wildfires. Dr. Tashnek believes that a lot of people have the misconception that animal control officers are going to get their animals out in emergencies. “After the Woolsey Fire, we did a Hidden Hills town hall with an animal control officer,” says Tashnek. “The public
said their disaster plan is ‘that animal control is going to come get us.’ Animal Control responded ‘No, we’re not because there’s only a few of us.’ We really rely on trained teams no matter what county they are in, and I greatly encourage cities to organize teams. It’s the trained volunteers that are helping emergency services by getting animals out because most people are unprepared. We are fortunate that experienced volunteers have provided trailers, crates, and equipment for owners helping save countless animals' lives.”
When the Santa Ana winds begin to blow, chaparral fuel loads combine with low humidity and windy “red flag” weather conditions to create the ideal conditions for high-intensity, rapidly moving wildfires. In recent months, we witnessed the devastating impacts on people, property, and animals—even with trained volunteers providing critical assistance during emergencies. Community-based teams like Malibu’s Fire Brigade, the Bell Canyon Volunteer Wildland Fire Department, CERT, and EVRT play a vital role in supporting municipal firefighters as they battle fires fueled by severe droughts and powerful winds across the

A Visionary's Journey of Artistry, Empowerment, and Compassion
JIM JORDAN THE HEART BEHIND THE LENS
By Emily Ledesma
Jim Jordan is more than a world-renowned fashion photographer; he is a visionary entrepreneur, creative force, and advocate for transformation. From his humble beginnings to becoming a global icon in the fashion and entertainment industries, as well as discovering some of the biggest models in the world, Jim's remarkable journey reflects his deep commitment to creativity, compassion, and empowerment.
Jim Jordan’s passion for beauty and transformation began early in his life growing up in Calabasas.
“I loved transforming things—cutting hair, bonsaiing trees, and beautifying everything around me,” Jordan explains. “I could see the potential in everything, and I loved using my camera to show the world how I saw it.”
This innate talent set the foundation for what would become an extraordinary career. Jordan’s first experience with scouting models came when his best friend was discovered as a model and whisked away to Europe.
Despite his young age and humble resources, Jordan took a chance and began scouting models himself. Equipped with a borrowed camera from his neighbor, scissors for haircuts, and makeup from his sisters, teenage Jim hitchhiked to schools around the area and set out to discover girls and guys in whom he saw the potential to be turned into supermodels.
His eye for beauty and this raw potential quickly gained recognition as nearly every model he scouted, transformed by way of hair and makeup, and photographed was signed by Elite Models in Los Angeles. These models that he discovered were then quickly sent off to the fashion capitals of the world—New York, Paris, and Milan.
Jordan was encouraged by Elite Models to start doing hair and makeup in Europe for fashion photographers so he could learn photography while making money in the industry. Months later, after a traumatic and lifethreatening experience, he bought a one-way ticket to Milan, not realizing the hardships he was about to face.
“I had nowhere to go and didn’t know a single person,” recalls Jordan. “I ended up homeless in a park in the center of the city in Milan. I was devastated, scared, and cold. I was trying to learn the language while sleeping under the stars. I had no money, and Milan was nothing like I pictured it to be.”
After months of feeling lost, he met some models at a nightclub that introduced him to their model agency. The director of the agency realized Jordan’s gift after seeing the photos he had taken and all the models he had discovered. The owner of the agency sent Jordan to meet the editor of one of the prestigious Italian fashion magazines, Grazia
That chance meeting led to his first break: a job doing hair and makeup for the cover of Grazia and a 10-page fashion editorial inside. From then on, Jordan’s life would never be the same. His career as a hair and makeup artist was launched, and he began working across Europe for high fashion magazines like Italian Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, to name a few.
Jordan spent three years in Europe before returning to the U.S. as his career was skyrocketing. He worked with icons and supermodels like Cindy Crawford, Elizabeth Taylor, Farrah Fawcett, and Whitney Houston, among others—as well as top photographers Herb Ritts, Peter Lindbergh, and Helmut Newton, to name a few.

“I would carry a camera in my hair and makeup kit and photograph the models and actors between and after shoots to document my work how I wanted it to be shown,” shares Jordan. “I was afraid that if the photographers that were hiring me found out I was attempting to take photographs, they would see me as a threat and I would lose my job. Little did I know those photos would change my life.”
Jordan’s career as a hair and makeup artist brought him around the world, traveling with celebrities and models who became dear friends. After several years behind the scenes, his vibrant energy and work with longtime client J. Crew earned him his first major photography gig.
“A friend of mine and the founder of J. Crew, Emily, found out I had been taking photos secretly on set from some of the models I had photographed,” recounts Jordan. “She then demanded I show her my photos as I was scared and hesitant. I told her I did not want to show her my photos and that I was just documenting my life, my friends, and the places I got to travel; the photos were private, and I told her I was not attempting to become a professional photographer. I ended up showing her my pictures after her continued pursuit and demanding. She was shocked at what I had been hiding and could not believe that she didn’t know about my secret pictures sooner. Shortly after seeing my photos, she started booking me on photography jobs for J. Crew. That became my launch pad into the fashion photo world.”
His fashion photography career catapulted him to shooting the biggest brands, campaigns, supermodels, celebrities, and fashion editorials.
Jordan’s work has been featured on hundreds of magazine covers, such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, GQ, Elle, Forbes, and Glamour, and he has photographed friends and stars like Charlize Theron, Leonardo DiCaprio, Zendaya, Miley Cyrus, and the Kardashians, to name a few.
Jim Jordan’s love for artistry has evolved into a deep passion for empowerment. After years of working with A-list talent, he realized his purpose extended beyond photography. Following a lifealtering near-death experience, he had a vision of creating a refuge for those struggling in the entertainment industry. “I woke up and realized that my happiness was not going to come from what society and the world had shown me,” says Jordan. “There was more to life than fancy homes, flashy cars, and money. I wanted to redirect my focus around helping the lost, hurting, and broken.”
This realization inspired the founding of White Cross Management, White Cross Productions, and White Cross Worldwide, a sanctuary for emerging talent and launching global brands.
Jordan returned to his roots of scouting and developing some of the biggest models and brands in the world—like Taylor Hill, Gigi Hadid, and Jeremy Meeks—who have all gone on to become global icons and household names.
With all the years of experience Jordan had working on set with hundreds of fashion photographers, he developed his own style with his clean natural lighting, his impeccable eye for detail, and his communication and direction for making others feel and look beautiful. Jordan’s style landed him a top photo agent in New York City that adored him and saw his magical gifts as a photographer.
When Jordan discovered Taylor Hill at 14, he saw a vision of an extraordinary future for her. “I taught Taylor how to pose, how to walk, and how to navigate the business. Developing her to become the youngest Victoria’s Secret Angel in history was a proud moment for me and her family,” says Jordan.
Similarly, his discovery of Gigi Hadid led to another global success story. “I discovered and met Gigi in Malibu and
introduced myself to her mom, Yolanda. I worked with Yolanda on developing her career,” explains Jordan. “I photographed her, set up agency meetings in New York, and the rest is history.”
Jordan’s mentorship goes beyond building careers—it’s about instilling confidence and guidance in young talent as well as helping them find their voice and celebrating and visualizing their future before it happens.
His recent appearance as a judge on Holland’s Next Top Model, alongside Yolanda, Gigi, and Bella Hadid, highlights his ongoing commitment to nurturing talent and empowering the next generation of supermodels.
Jordan’s vision for a world where artistry and compassion intersect continues to fuel his passion.
“I want to inspire people to find their purpose, authentic gifting, and to use their platform to be a voice for the voiceless,” says Jordan.
Yes, Jim Jordan’s success is built on a foundation of purpose, empowerment, and compassion. His philanthropic initiatives focus on bringing opportunities to impoverished communities, working with Elon Musk and Starlink to provide internet in rural parts of the world and supporting refugee campuses around the globe.
His work consistently breaks creative boundaries while telling powerful, meaningful stories. As a restless innovator and entrepreneur, he works with emerging technologies to merge the worlds of gaming, fashion, and entertainment. His extensive global network has opened doors to countless opportunities, including ventures in commodities. Jordan also owns three fashion magazines and is launching White Cross Beauty, a luxury beauty and skincare brand.
Jim Jordan’s journey from a homeless teenager in Milan to becoming an influential figure and global pioneer across a multitude of industries is a powerful testament of passion, perseverance, and purpose. Through his artistry, mentorship, and entrepreneurial ventures, he has transformed countless lives, building a legacy of creativity and compassion. l

THE SEASON OF LOVE
By Lawrence Mitchell
Saint Valentine, they say, married young couples to help the male partners avoid conscription into war. For his defiance of emperor Claudius II, he was executed. But there’s a happy ending to this story for both men and women.
Romance, marriage, and a healthy love life can be greatly beneficial to one’s heart health, so say most scientists and doctors who study the relationship between the two. But who needs scientists poking around where they don’t belong? The heart can decide for itself. February brings thoughts of love and romance to mind. But if you’re feeling less than enthusiastic about all the Valentine’s Day hoopla, consider flowers, a card, and embracing your partner with a knowing glance, if only for the health benefits you will both enjoy.
There are some good reasons why the heart wants what it wants. A healthy romantic encounter causes the release of chemicals in our brains and bodies that make us feel happier. Intimacy can reduce pain, stimulate healing blood flow, and lower blood pressure. Studies even suggest that men and women who have satisfying encounters at least twice a week are less likely to have a heart attack. Intimate encounters also improve sleep and strengthen pelvic floor muscles vital to good health later in life. Overall, the benefits of a little romance with a partner now or any time of the year are indisputable. So, stay active and maintain a healthy heart both figuratively and literally by enjoying this season of love all year long. l

Motivated buyers, eager for a fresh start, create a pool of potential prospects. Listing in the first quarter means fewer competing properties, giving sellers an edge. Take advantage of the renewed energy in the market.

The Art of Traveling Well
By Lori Berezin
Fly beyond first class with Aero
Remember when flying offered a relaxing way to get somewhere fast? These days, travelers often arrive late, stressed out from the myriad hassles encountered while navigating long lines and short tempers.
In 2021, Aero, a semi-private jet service headquartered in Van Nuys, changed all that. Now, guests can fly hassle-free on luxurious, custom-designed, 16-seat jets from Los Angeles to premiere travel, entertainment, and sporting destinations such as Aspen, Las Vegas, Napa, Palm Springs, Salt Lake City/Park City, Sun Valley, and Los Cabos. The airline also
curates exclusive travel packages with prestigious hospitality brands like Four Seasons, Waldorf Astoria, and Auberge Resorts Collection to elevate the entire experience.
How it started
Aero started in Europe. The airline’s first flight was between Mykonos and Ibiza in 2019. The company opened in the United States in 2021. Originally conceived by Uber co-founder Garrett Camp, Aero began as a software platform to simplify the booking process of private jets. It’s since evolved as a bridge between private charter and first-class commercial flights.
The company prides itself on maintaining the highest safety standards, following many of the requirements of traditional commercial airlines. It’s even earned the prestigious ARGUS Platinum rating, placing it among the top 5% of private aviation operators worldwide.
Everyone’s a VIP
these jets would normally have 37 seats, but on Aero flights, there are just 16 seats—all featuring a window and an aisle so guests have maximum personal space.
Travel Aero-style
One of the biggest perks of flying Aero is the time savings of two to three hours. Guests check in curbside just 20 minutes prior to their flight. An Aero host greets them at the curb to handle luggage and welcome them into the lounge to unwind with a tasty array of snacks and beverages, including juices, coffee, or a bubbly glass of Veuve Clicquot. At Aero, there are never any lines, crowds, or waiting.
Upon landing, Aero’s signature arrival process ensures that guests move seamlessly to their ultimate destination. Whether heading to ski the storied slopes of Park City or Aspen, swim beside Cabo’s iconic arches, catch the latest sporting or entertainment event in Las Vegas, pamper body and soul in Palm Springs, or toast good fortune in Napa, it’s beyond first class all the way.
Celebrate the good life together
On Aero, guests enjoy endless complimentary amenities like in-flight dining from Erewhon, a premium open bar, and ultra-fast high-speed Wi-Fi from Starlink to stream online entertainment favorites or cruise the web from the moment they step on board. Together, We Rebuild, Recover, and Rise
During this New Year season, we stand by you, wishing for brighter days ahead and strength in your recovery. As neighbors, we are deeply saddened by the impact of the recent fires that have taken a toll on our beautiful communities, and we want you to know that we are here for you, sending love, strength, and unwavering support.
Experiencing the aftermath of a fire can feel overwhelming.
Cobblestone & Vines was founded when an unexpected fire destroyed our own home. At first, all I could see was loss— our cherished life in ruins, leaving us concerned about our path forward.
Faced with no other choice, I left my career in fashion design to take matters into my own hands. Drawing on my 22-year background in design and pattern making, I realized that constructing a home was much like creating a beautiful dress or suit—both require precision, creativity, and vision. I rebuilt our home, and in the process, discovered a new purpose. That experience became the foundation of a 25-year career in design and construction, one rooted in compassion. Our work is beyond building spaces; it's about rebuilding lives, dreams, and the beauty that can emerge from loss.
LET'S REBUILD TOGETHER.
If you're ready to begin rebuilding or simply have questions about the process, please don't hesitate to reach out. Our design and build consultations are free for those affected by the fires. We are committed to providing honest, reliable guidance and expertise.

Holly wood Is Here
Michelle Zeitlin brings passion to power
By
Lee Aubin
Photography by Raquel Krelle
Michelle Zeitlin, the president of More Zap Productions and Management, host of the Passion to Power podcast, and a “Hollywood Insider,” says Hollywood is no longer a central strip of regional geography in Los Angeles. It’s wherever the entertainment business is happening. And in the digital age, that business is happening “wherever my laptop and mobile phone are.” Zeitlin lives and works in the Conejo Valley and has been helping her clients fulfill their passion for years in the entertainment industry. Even before many went remote during the Covid pandemic, Michelle conducted business in the performing arts and entertainment right from her home office, where she says she can “watch little hummingbirds zip outside my window.”
“I’ve been a triple threat on Broadway—a ballerina and choreographer-director,”
Michelle tells us. “I have an immense passion for and a keen understanding of the discipline required to forge a sustainable creative career.”
coaching for auditions, and sometimes putting actors on tape in her home studio. She’s selected wardrobe for red-carpet events and consoled her clients when emotions run high. “This business can beat you up sometimes,” explains Michelle.
Michelle says she’s happiest when she’s busiest— pitching networks, developing show concepts, editing book manuscripts, and working on social media campaigns. The variety of her job has great appeal. “I’m constantly morphing. As the business changes, you have to be nimble. You have to pirouette when there are union strikes or a Hollywood contraction. So much work has moved out of Hollywood to other states and overseas,” explains Michelle, whose clients have shot in Budapest, Barcelona, and Hawaii.
“This is a business about relationships and having a passion for what you do.”
Michelle is a master of opening doors and opportunities. Her clients have called her a “boss,” someone with “chutzpah,” and someone with “juice.” She represents a Tony nominee, Music Hall of Famer, and Grammy winner. “She attracts the best of the best because she has deep industry relationships and years of experience,” explains Emily Alabi, a client for a decade. “She’s my team, and we are in sync.”
Michelle has helped celebrities with their book deals and taught sports stars how to speak in front of crowds. She’s built brand identity for artists for Disney, Nickelodeon, Warner Bros., and indie labels. More Zap actors are on the rise, with some booking TV series roles. Michelle helps their agents by selecting suitable theatrical material,
If someone wants to know where to begin and how to craft creative goals into a career, Michelle advises people to check out her platform, Passion to Power, and says, “It’s important that if someone is new to show business, they have the right people to answer questions and to direct them. This is a business about relationships and having a passion for what you do.” She offers coaching and consulting for all types of creatives. She also gives lectures internationally. The story of how casting has evolved, how the studios work today, and the diversity of the talent that is being sought is something Michelle can speak to. If you’re a CEO whose vision is to feel more creative, Michelle is up for that. She uses OZ analogies. Whether a novice or a career pro, she advises, “Forge your yellow brick road to success, and I can help.” For more information, visit morezap.com. l

The Berk Family
A passion for writing that spans three generations
By Lori Berezin
While there’s no single gene responsible for the ability to write, a talent for storytelling can certainly be passed down from generation to generation.
In the case of renowned writer Howard Berk, his son Peter, and his grandson Jordan, all three possess that x-factor that made them passionate about the written word.
Peter Berk and his two sons, Jordan and Daniel, moved to Calabasas in 1993. His father, Howard Berk, was born on July 22, 1924, in Brookline, Massachusetts. Howard later moved to Los Angeles, where he maintained a successful career as a writer, penning scripts for such popular television shows as Columbo, Mission: Impossible, and McMillan & Wife. He also wrote four novels and films such as the 1985 movie Target, starring Gene Hackman and directed by Arthur Penn.
Howard and his son Peter worked on numerous projects together over the years. One screenplay concerning the future of the American justice system stood out among the rest. It focused on a controversial technology called “TimeLock” that instantly ages prisoners the number of years of their sentence. It also raised the ethical question: What happens if they’re innocent?
Peter continues to work on the story, even after losing his father in 2016 at the ripe old age of 91. Peter transformed the story, TimeLock, from screenplay to novel, which was published by IngramElliott in 2022. He also co-wrote TimeLock 2: The Kyoto Conspiracy, with at least three more books in the series to come.
Peter’s also penned the newly released political legal thriller First Line of Defense. It’s fittingly about a father, an attorney and President of the United States, who risks his career to defend his son, who’s arrested for murdering his best friend.
Surprisingly, writing wasn’t always Peter’s first career choice. “I originally planned on becoming a film composer and songwriter,” he says. “Inspired by such movie composers as John Barry, Jerry Goldsmith, and John Williams, I thought I’d have my first Oscar by age 25. It obviously didn’t work out that way. But to my great pleasure, both of my sons, Jordan and Daniel, are excellent composers. Daniel has already amassed some 75 film, TV, and commercial music scoring credits—about 73 more than I ever did!”
Creativity clearly runs in the family. IngramElliott just published Jordan’s first novel, The Timestream Verdict. It tells the story of Aaron Barnett, an ordinary accountant who falls asleep in 1985 and wakes up 60 years later as a juror in the trial of the century. This time-travel crime also calls for a time-travel jury. The tale further unlocks the philosophical doorway concerning the nature of time itself.
Jordan notes, “I never expected or intended to follow my forebearers into writing. But when IngramElliott published TimeLock, it proved there was hope for anyone with the right partner and the right story. Luckily, the right story found me too, also thanks to my dad, who pitched me the simple idea of a jury composed of time travelers. From that seed, the idea snowballed into an action-packed, timehopping story featuring a trial about time travel itself, drawing upon all of my inspirations from my favorite genre. And a year later, I gifted the completed manuscript of The Timestream Verdict to my dad as a surprise Father’s Day gift, bringing it full circle.” Jordan adds, “It’s amazing to be able to continue the family legacy. And now that I have kids of my own, maybe a fourth generation is blossoming too!”
When not writing, both Jordan and his dad love sitting at the piano and writing songs. Jordan, a software engineer by trade, also enjoys playing basketball and traveling. He encourages would-be writers to, “Just go for it! If you have an idea that inspires you, keep going as long as you enjoy the process.”
Both father and son trace their talent for writing back to Howard. Peter recalls, “Because they enabled me to honor my dad as both a great writer and a great father, the ‘TimeLock’ series of novels easily represent the most gratifying work I’ve done in my life. And now to see how gifted Jordan is as a novelist makes me every bit as proud as I know his grandfather would be.”
The Berks clearly possess t he write stuff. We look forward to seeing what comes next for this multi-talented, multigenerational family l

Hadassah members were humbled to host a remarkable, grateful patient and Hadassah nurse, Michal Elon, at an event at The Six in Calabasas on December 10th. Compassionate Care at Home:
House Call Doctor Thousand Oaks
Advances in technology and research have improved medical care, but one medical group is embracing the old-fashioned tradition of house calls. House Call Doctor Thousand Oaks (HCDTO) provides personalized care by treating patients in the comfort of their homes, delivering thoughtful, thorough medical attention.
This approach fosters a deeper understanding of patients. By seeing them in their home environments, HCDTO’s doctors identify underlying issues that might be missed in a clinic. For instance, Dr. Anya Consiglio recently managed the care of a bed-bound patient with kidney stones, initially deemed “too complex” for a local hospital. She coordinated treatment through a major tertiary hospital in California, exemplifying the group’s ability to resolve such complex cases.
Founded by Dr. Ellen Crowe, HCDTO serves patients from Encino to Malibu to Montecito, with 15% residing outside this region. Whether providing one-time consultations or long-term care, the group’s mission is clear: to deliver flexible, responsive, and patient-centered care. Dr. Crowe emphasizes affordability, ensuring this expertise is accessible across the economic spectrum.
Dr. Crowe, board-certified in family medicine and an ER physician since 1990, leads an 18-member team of specialists in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pulmonology, Critical Care, Integrative Medicine,
"I love having the opportunity to spend as much time as needed with my patients in their home or workplace. It enables me to gain a clear understanding of their lifestyle and priorities, and this helps me to deliver more personalized care. And I love that I get to meet their pets!" — Anya Consiglio, MD
"My goal is to bring back the cherished doctor-patient relationship that has mostly vanished with our current health care system. That level of attention is missing from the modern system of insurance-driven, 12-minute appointments. " — Ellen Crowe, MD
and Emergency Medicine. She personally has over 45,000 hours in the emergency department and 110,000 patients treated.
Dr. Jolie Pfahler is one of HCDTO’s MDs living here in 91302 and tells us, “A house call lets me connect on a deeper level. More than just diagnosing and treating, it’s making patients feel heard, valued, and cared for.”
Dr. Crowe understands that great care starts with listening and adds, “Time spent truly listening provides better understanding and outcomes than many tests. That’s the art of medicine.”
HCDTO’s approach is traditional and combines this style with cutting-edge medical technology. The team provides
"I love that I can spend as much time as needed with my patients, really listening to their concerns and understanding their goals. This personalized approach is what makes house calls so special.” — Jolie Pfahler, MD
mobile X-rays, ultrasounds, medications, IV fluids and antibiotics, genetic testing, advanced counseling, and more—all at home. Services include sutures, biopsies, wound care, Pap smears, cancer screenings, and ECGs. For complex cases, a pulmonologist/critical care specialist is available.
The group also supports patients traveling to second homes, flying doctors to provide continuity of care. By eliminating the need for hospital visits or unnecessary ER trips, they reduce readmissions and boost patient satisfaction.
Family members caring for elderly parents often find HCDTO invaluable. One client shared how the team
stabilized her bedridden father’s health while providing peace of mind, saying, “Having a highly qualified medical team address urgent issues 24/7, perform imaging and bloodwork, and manage ongoing care has been life-changing for our family.”
HCDTO specializes in serving those who struggle with traditional office visits due to physical or time constraints. Many patients initially seek help for urgent issues but stay for the comprehensive, personalized care. This combination of old-fashioned service and modern expertise ensures HCDTO delivers highquality, patient-centered healthcare that keeps individuals healthier and happier in their own homes. l

Honoring Steve Cohen’s legacy in the fight against heart disease
In 1995, the world lost a vibrant and promising life when 35-year-old Steve Cohen tragically passed away due to a sudden heart attack. Steve’s untimely death shook his family, friends, and the broader community, but it also sparked a powerful movement to raise awareness of heart disease, its devastating impact, and the importance of early detection. This tragic event became the inspiration behind the creation of The Heart Foundation, a Westlake Village-based organization dedicated to saving lives from heart disease through education, early detection, and support for innovative cardiovascular research. At the heart of The Heart Foundation's mission is its partnership with the Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, a leader in heart health research and clinical care. The institute is home to groundbreaking research led by world-renowned cardiologist Dr. P.K. Shah, which The Heart Foundation proudly supports.
The Heart Foundation has also brought awareness to heart health with the Steven S. Cohen Humanitarian Award—honoring remarkable individuals who effect change within their communities and demonstrate a commitment to the betterment of humankind. Recipients of this prestigious award include Dana Carvey, Mike Meldman, Berry Gordy, Wolfgang Puck, Kirk and Anne Douglas, Norman Brokaw, and Marshall Ezralow. These special individuals embody the spirit of Steve Cohen through their personal and professional integrity, generosity, and strength and have inspired others to join the fight against heart disease.
As February is American Heart Month, it’s the perfect time to reflect on how we can take action to protect our own hearts and the hearts of those we love from the leading cause of death for women and men. As The
Heart Foundation works to keep Steve Cohen’s memory alive and create a world where no life is lost to heart disease. They offer five essential tips to protect your heart health. These simple-yet-effective strategies may help enhance your cardiovascular wellbeing.
Five Tips to live a more heart healthy lifestyle
Learn about your family health history
Understanding your family health history is crucial to living a heart healthy lifestyle as it may help identify genetic risk factors for heart disease. If heart disease runs in your family, you may be at a higher risk of developing it yourself. Understanding your genetic predisposition can help you make informed, proactive decisions to reduce that risk.
Exercise for 30 minutes every day
Your heart is the hardest working muscle in your body, constantly pumping to deliver oxygen to your organs and remove waste. To keep your heart muscle in good shape, regular exercise is essential. Doing 150 minutes
Steven Cohen, along with his daughters Ashton and Lindsay, is the driving force behind the mission of The Heart Foundation.
of physical activity every week can help blood pressure and cholesterol levels while also fending off conditions such as diabetes and obesity, which increase the risk of heart disease. Dr. P.K. Shah’s famous saying, “Genetics load the gun, lifestyle pulls the trigger,” highlights the importance of an active lifestyle—since people who are inactive are twice as likely to develop cardiovascular diseases as those who stay active.
Quit using tobacco products
Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable disease, disability, and death in the United States. It damages blood vessels, raises blood pressure, and lowers HDL (good) cholesterol, all of which contribute to the buildup of plaque in the arteries. This can lead to atherosclerosis, heart attack, cardiac arrest, and stroke. By quitting, you can improve your circulation, lower your heart disease risk, and improve your quality of life.
Monitor your blood pressure and cholesterol
High blood pressure and cholesterol can be especially dangerous for your heart health as they can often develop without any symptoms. Referred to as “the silent killer,” high blood pressure, or hypertension, puts extra strain on your heart and blood vessels, increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke. High cholesterol can lead to plaque buildup in the arteries, restricting blood flow and increasing your heart's workload. Discuss your blood pressure and cholesterol levels with your healthcare provider to determine if lifestyle changes or prescription medications are needed to maintain heart health.
Know the signs
Steve Cohen was playing basketball with friends when he suddenly felt unwell and suffered a fatal heart attack. Understanding the signs and symptoms of a cardiac emergency is crucial as quick action can save a life. Common signs like chest pain, shortness of breath, or dizziness may indicate a heart attack, but less recognized symptoms—such as jaw, shoulder, or stomach discomfort—can also be warning signs. Knowing how to respond, like calling emergency services or performing CPR, can make a critical difference in the outcome, improving survival rates and minimizing heart damage.
This American Heart Month, we remember Steve Cohen, whose passing sparked a movement to save lives and improve heart health. Through its partnership with Cedars-Sinai’s Smidt Heart Institute, The Heart Foundation continues to raise awareness and support research to combat heart disease. By following simple tips like learning about your family health history, staying active, quitting smoking, and knowing how to recognize the warning signs of heart disease, you can make a lasting impact on your cardiovascular health as well as the health of those around you.
Every small change today can benefit your heart for years to come—because you're never too young and it's never too late to start living a heart-healthy life.

Rick Bilgrien
Receives Honorary
"Spirit of Calabasas Award"
By Linda Perry
The Calabasas Chamber of Commerce Bill Van Gieson Spirit of Calabasas Award, a longtime celebratory honor given to an outstanding leader in the community, has named Rick Bilgrien, general manager of Cadillac of Calabasas, as the 2025 recipient. The annual award is bestowed on a chamber member that possesses a pioneering spirit, shows initiative, and makes exceptional contributions to the community.
Rick Bilgrien, an automotive veteran, opened Cadillac of Calabasas in January of 2022 and oversaw the remodel of the 100,000-square-foot dealership on Calabasas Road, formerly a Mini and Volvo dealership. Since opening, Cadillac of Calabasas has been ranked as the #1 Cadillac dealer in the western region several times. Part of that success stems from the many ways in which Rick and his team embraced the entire Calabasas community—sponsoring key events, including the Calabasas Chamber’s annual Wine Tasting & Silent Auction, the annual USTA Men’s Pro Tennis Championship held at the Calabasas Tennis and Swim Center, and the Calabasas Country Club’s Annual Men’s Member Guest Golf Tournament, The Calabash.
Calabasas Chamber CEO Lisa Clayden proudly explained that Rick Bilgrien was the unanimous choice for this year’s recognition. “Rick joined the Calabasas Chamber before even opening the doors of the new dealership,” says Lisa. “He personally became active in attending chamber meetings and events, including the Calabasas Pumpkin Festival’s Business Expo, where he warmly welcomed families and handed out candy and Cadillac-branded water. Rick’s investment in our community is truly inspiring. He is a shining example of the spirit of Calabasas.”
Rick Bilgrien was honored at the sold-out Calabasas Chamber’s Installation Gala and Casino Night on Saturday, January 25th, which also launched the 70th-anniversary year for the chamber, which was founded in 1955. l

Bob Eubanks
The cowboy from Hidden Hills who brought The Beatles to Los Angeles
By Jacqueline Cleaveland
A golden voice echoes through the darkened theatre. A spotlight illuminates a man standing on stage. He speaks with candor and warm confidence that can only come from years of mastery— which makes sense because this voice belongs to Bob Eubanks. From being KRLA’s disc jockey and a successful nightclub owner to producing Beatles concerts, promoting iconic music stars, hosting TV shows such as the Newlywed Game and Card Sharks, announcing the Rose Parade, and cowboying in Calabasas—Bob has done it all, including his most recent venture: Backstage with The Beatles
Being the only living person to have produced a Beatles concert all three years that they toured the U.S., Bob has exclusive tales to tell—such as how The Beatles requested in their contracts to have Dr Pepper and portable TVs inside their dressing room. Alternating between story
and song, this stage show is Bob’s original creation. In between snippets of story, the Beatles’ tribute band Ticket to Ride plays select songs live. Bob’s most recent performance of Backstage with The Beatles was this past autumn at Pepperdine University’s Smothers Theatre. The production consists of his never-beforetold stories—stories he lived and only he can tell. But, lucky us, because we have an inside scoop here.
As the son of blue-collar Americans, Bob remarks that, “In the Great Depression, my parents moved to Michigan to build cars; during World War II, they moved to California to build airplanes.” By his second birthday, Bob was a California resident. Once on the wild west coast, he became enthralled with the gritty, brave world of cowboying. In school, Bob participated in horsemanship events, such as the Onondarka drill team. Cowboying and show business merged when, at age 11, Bob filmed a TV commercial with his cowboy idol, Gene Autry.
As a young man, Bob was the disc jockey for Los Angeles’ hottest radio station: KRLA. In the years to follow, Bob fell into the position to produce a Beatles concert, mainly for two reasons. For one, KRLA was the first station in Southern California to play The Beatles. Secondly, he was the owner and talent buyer of the Cinnamon Cinder young adult nightclubs, located in North Hollywood and Long Beach—which meant that musicians’ representatives contacted him directly. Wednesday night was “Talent Night,” and the club featured acts such as Ike and Tina Turner, Buffalo Springfield, and Chuck Berry.
While the British band was being rejected across Los Angeles, Bob knew they were something special. To this day, Bob says, “The Beatles are the only band that could be just as big now as they were in the 1960s.” In 1964, Bob Eubanks brought The Beatles to the Hollywood Bowl. With a keen intuition, Bob predicted The Beatles would sell out the Bowl within a day. Upon this declaration, his doubtful colleagues said, “Are you kidding me?” But Bob was right; The Beatles sold out the Hollywood Bowl in three hours.
In 1966, Bob produced The Beatles’ second-to-last paid concert.
Mobilizing such a feat wasn’t without its difficulties. To fund the concert, Bob mortgaged $25,000 against his Hidden Hills home. Unfortunately, after paying everyone, he made a total of $2,000. Bob swore never to do it again. Yet, the next year, he was asked to produce another Beatles’ concert at the Hollywood Bowl. On the matter, Bob says, “This time, I got smart.” He made sure to guarantee that The Beatles played two nights at the Bowl. Additionally, he offered KRLA an opportunity to present The Beatles with him; Bob was paid handsomely for that deal alone.
About The Beatles, Bob says Paul McCartney was enthralled with one of the first-ever TV remotes he saw at Elvis’s house. While songwriting, Paul sang “scrambled eggs, scrambled
eggs” to the melody of “Yesterday” until he penned its lyrics. “Hey Jude” was about John Lennon’s son, Julian, and the refrain “Let It Be” came to Paul in a dream, his mother’s words of wisdom.
In 1966, Bob produced The Beatles’ second-to-last ticketed concert which was held at Dodger Stadium. Throughout all three Beatles’ performances, Bob reveals the ticket prices were only four to seven dollars. The Beatles’ final public performance, which was free to the public, would be on the roof of Apple Records in London.
That night at Dodger Stadium, Beatles’ fans were hysterical. After the concert, Bob was presented with a dilemma: The Beatles were trapped. Girls were climbing atop any suspected Beatles’ vehicle like ants—tearing off hood ornaments and side mirrors. The band’s armored car had all the air let out of its tires. John Lennon was growing disgruntled because he wanted to attend a party across town. The Fab Four turned to Bob for a solution.
Bob called an ambulance. For a clandestine exit, he packed The Beatles inside, covered them with blankets, and with sirens blaring, the vehicle exited the stadium. The escape was successful until the ambulance struck a speed bump and the radiator fell out. Relentless fans began to swarm. To Bob’s disbelief, out of nowhere, the Hells Angels motorcycle gang appeared. With their bright lights and loud engines, they easily cut through the crowd, offering to escort The Beatles to their armored car which awaited at the gas station. So, in a dreamlike exit, The Beatles and the Hells Angels raced away.
Bob’s lesson for success is “taking what you know and applying it to other areas.” As a cowboy, he learned that horses communicate visually—they signal with a prick of their ears, consistency and disruptions of breath, or a quiver of the flanks. Bob applied this to people. While hosting the Newlywed Game , if faced with a lull in a contestant's response, he would study their partner's body language, read the mood, and tease out a funny moment.
On his off days from hosting the Newlywed Game, Bob was a local cowboy partaking in rodeos across Calabasas, Chatsworth’s Thunderhead Ranch, and more. Caring about
his community, he saw that Calabasas and Hidden Hills were flourishingly equestrian, and the locals needed an easy spot in town to get equipment, hay, clothing, and boots. Combining his experience with horses and business, in 1968, Bob partnered with locals Don McCoy and Buck Wicall to found the Calabasas Saddlery.
In the decades that followed, Bob had innumerable projects and achievements. Bob has won nine Emmys and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. For nearly 40 years, Bob announced the Tournament of Roses Parade. His broadcast ratings were consistently double that of other channels combined. Throughout Bob’s career, his projects have brightened and improved many lives—counting Beatles fans alone, the number is already in the millions. Bob’s Backstage with The Beatles has entertained and educated audiences across the nation. Still a local to the area, Bob Eubanks is undoubtedly a remarkable member of our community. l

The Lamborghini Temerario

As successor to the Lamborghini Huracán, the Temerario boasts a new all-aluminum space-frame as well as a new twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 powerplant. Boasting three electric motors and the twin-turbo engine, the Temerario pushes an incredible 907 horsepower. With a 10,000 rpm redline, this Lamborghini sings to the high heavens, and the sound is so very intoxicating. The name “Temerario” can be translated to "fearless" or "daredevil" and helps usher in a new model in classic Lamborghini style and elegance. The performance must be mentioned, of course. With a maximum speed of over 210+ mph, 0 to 62 mph in just 2.7 seconds, the new model once again elevates the Lamborghini brand and carries on the iconic tradition that has made it famous.
From Lamborhgini: “ The Temerario is a genuine ‘fuoriclasse’: a car in a league of its own, an extraordinary and innovative vehicle both from a technical and stylistic point of view,” says Stephan Winkelmann, chairman and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini. “Every new Lamborghini must surpass its forerunners in performance terms, while at the same time being more sustainable from an emissions standpoint. With the Temerario, we have completed a key chapter in the electrification strategy included in our Direzione Cor Tauri plan. We also become the first luxury automotive brand to offer a completely hybridized range.” For more information, visit lamborghini.com. l

The Queen Mary
Written and photographed by Jason Klavir
We are living in times where people focus so much on the here and now or what's ahead that they often overlook the past—where we were and how we got where we are today.
For many people, there is something more important than history books, and that's seeing history with their own eyes—such as something made in an age long passed that is no longer part of modernday civilization. In recent years, there has been a boom in restoration projects of important symbols in this country and the world. And one of them is right in our backyard in Long Beach, namely the RMS Queen Mary.
Launched in 1934, the Queen Mary was the fastest ocean liner of her time. She is 22 years newer than the Titanic and twice the size. She survived the great depression and was the Allied power’s secret weapon in World War II. She was so important during that conflict that English Prime Minister Winston Churchill credited her with shortening the war by at least a year! Before the dawn of the commercial airplane, the ocean liner was the only way to cross the Atlantic.
The Queen Mary was one of the most famous and luxurious ocean liners ever built, unlike modern cruise ships today, which are built to avoid weather systems and cruise at slow speeds.
The Queen Mary was an Atlantic liner, and comparing the Queen Mary to a cruise ship is like comparing an executive tour bus to a school bus. She was as fast and sturdy as she was luxurious. She has even carried many rich and famous people that have graced her decks, like Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Cary Grant, Judy Garland, Bob Hope, and Walt Disney, just to name a few.
In 1967, she was sold to the City of Long Beach to become a floating hotel and museum. She had an extensive conversion from 1968 to 1970, where her engines and boilers were removed, and she was rendered unable to sail ever again. I have been a frequent visitor to the ship since the mid-2000s. In 2022, after years of leasing the Queen Mary out to property management companies, the City of Long Beach finally took full control of her and is doing a fantastic job with restorations.
Where everyone is welcome aboard
Since then, the City of Long Beach has been working very hard to restore various rooms and artifacts onboard the ship that haven’t seen the light of day since the ship was retired in 1967. The original decking has been rejuvenated, and the glossy varnish removed, revealing the original finish. The flooring has been redone tastefully to look period-correct for the time. The onboard lighting was overhauled with LEDs and warm white LEDs to mimic the incandescent glow the ship was known for. Inside and out, the City of Long Beach has done a terrific job restoring the ship, as she just turned 90 years old. The ship hasn’t sailed a single mile in 57 years but still draws crowds.
Every time I’ve visited since the reopening, there are people wherever I go. The ship is bustling with more people now than I have ever seen before. All walks of life come to visit the ship—from tourists who want to do something fun to ship enthusiasts like me who know the Queen Mary’s history inside and out. Passengers and crew who sailed on the ship in her service days also come
to Long Beach to visit the Queen Mary. She has prevailed despite the odds and uncertain fate through the years, from the great depression to World War II to the end of the ocean liner era to covid. She is still here and is the only pre-World War II luxury ocean liner left in the world that’s still afloat.
Visit today and you can feel the history and presence of the soul of the ship as you stroll her decks. She’s not just a ship—she’s a testament to early 20th-century engineering, and she’s an entity that you can almost talk to while you’re onboard. She is a great and iconic location to visit, have a meal, or even stay the night onboard, as her original staterooms are now hotel rooms. Bring the family to visit this majestic and historical piece of engineering. There truly is something about Mary. Cheers to the next 90 years, and long live the Queen! l

captivating Cornell
This quiet little stretch tucked in between Agoura Hills and Malibu may be the most historically diverse community in California
By Brian Rooney
It is the only known community in the state that has a one-room schoolhouse, general store, and post office dating to the 1920s—all still standing and still in use today.
When you consider that Cornell was also home to two major movie studio ranches, a pre-Disneyland amusement park, a popular mineral springs spa, and the horse ranch of a future U.S. president, you begin to understand its historical depth. This and future issues of 91302 will further explore this captivating community that is full of love and passion. Cornell was founded in 1911, with Nathan Wise serving as its first mayor, deputy sheriff, justice of the peace, and volunteer fireman. The community was named after Cornell University, but why that happened remains a mystery.
The fascinating history of Cornell includes Steve McQueen tending bar, a 1950s racetrack, Malibou Lake, the Indy 500, and four decades of Hollywood’s biggest movie stars.
Among the neighborhood’s many wonders is the Cornell School, built in 1926. It was rescued from a dilapidated state and restored by the current owners who reside there and host weddings and special events.
Mayor Wise saw big things for Cornell and had a U.S. Post Office established in October 1912, a full 15 years before the now-much-larger Agoura Hills next door received its first post office.
The first known film shoot in the Cornell area was a scene from Daddy Long Legs (1919), starring early Hollywood legend Mary Pickford. The movies arrived in a grand style when Paramount Pictures bought 2,700 acres along Cornell Road in 1927 to establish its movie ranch. 20th Century Fox studios did the same in 1946 when it purchased over 2,000 acres along Las Virgenes Road to utilize as a location ranch. The two studios shot scenes for over 200 movies on these vast properties, both of which are preserved today as parkland.
In the mid-1930s, two Malibou Lake residents created the Lake Enchanto amusement park that featured carnival rides, a dance floor, snack bar, pony rides, and the largest swimming pool on the West Coast at the time. That same parcel land was previously owned by automotive maverick Harry Miller, who used it as a weekend retreat from his downtown Los Angeles car factory. Miller’s winning streak at the Indy 500 over a number of years was so significant that his name holds great reverence at Indianapolis today.
Two legendary spots in Cornell still draw big crowds today. The first is the Rock Store, built in 1925. Since the 1960s, it’s served as a motorcycle mecca, drawing two-wheeled moto-enthusiasts from all over the world. The second is The Old Place, which has been serving up food and fun in a wonderfully rustic setting for over 50 years.
Future California Governor and President Ronald Reagan had a large horse and cattle ranch in Cornell from 1951 to 1967, where he and wife Nancy spent many weekends. There’s so much fascinating history in Cornell to explore. Stay tuned to 91302 for more in future issues. l
The mammoth pool at Lake Enchanto held 625,000 gallons and was the West Coast’s largest.
Harry Miller’s hand-built race cars are revered even today at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Of the approximately 300 movies shot in Cornell (so far), the most famous scene is this one from the original classic Frankenstein
Brian Rooney is proud to serve as a historian and archivist for the Calabasas Library. He is the author of the bestselling local history book Three Magical Miles, now in its fifth edition, and is finishing a documentary on the historic 20th Century Fox movie ranch.
The popular Seminole Hot Springs spa was dubbed “The Palm Springs of Los Angeles.”
Silent film-era superstar Mary Pickford shot the first known film in the Cornell area in 1919.
