espite a pandemic that just won’t quit us, the South End Art Hop is not to be stopped. That said, the Delta variant is a party animal, so expect to be asked to mask at many indoor venues. A lot of Hopping, of course, takes place outdoors, all along the Pine Street and Flynn Avenue corridors. SEABA provides all the IRL and virtual deets on page 11 of this handy pullout.

Artistic Treatment Howard Center Arts Collective shows the power of self-expression

A

rt making and therapy have always had a symbiotic relationship. Swiss psychologist Carl Jung encouraged his patients to paint mandalas in the 1920s to alleviate anxiety, and he created art himself in times of personal distress.

The Howard Center Arts Collective is open to adult artists who have lived experience with mental health or substance-use challenges, personally or with family members, friends or colleagues.

Launched in 2013, the collective maintains a packed schedule of quarterly exhibits, weekly open studios, virtual meetups and museum trips.

A YouTube video about the collective is viewable on the Howard Center website. In it, member Tom Stetson describes his mixed-media and pen-andink works as inspired by “medieval woodcut printings and old medical illustrations.” He says he sometimes works eight to 10 hours a day. “I have a lot of difficulties verbalizing things, so I use imagery,” Stetson explains.

“It’s very therapeutic for me; I’m able to quell the demons inside me.”

She shared some thoughts in advance of the group’s South End Art Hop exhibition.

How did the collective get started?

The Arts Collective had a very unique birth. In 2013, several staff who worked in Howard Center’s group homes were at their annual retreat. There, a few who were artists had an idea to reach out to other artists with lived experience with mental health challenges.

Tell me a bit about your own artwork and your approach to the intersection of art and mental health.

I work in mixed media and am particularly interested in environments — both internal and external. Collage is an important part of my work, which is at times representational and semiabstract. Art is how I express thoughts and feelings using colors, symbols and photographic references to respond to the world or create my own. It gives me a

The experience felt good, and this nascent community began the process of creating a space where, irrespective of whether we provided services or received them, we were all artists and we shared that common ground.

How many members are there currently?

There are between 20 and 25 participating members. Some only participate in shows; some come to open studio; some only participate in our weekly Zoom calls (where we share art and provide feedback). Some join us for all three. We like to meet people where they are at and let 2021

way to get outside of my head and into my imagination while physically connecting with materials.

What’s one of your favorite moments from working with the collective?

I would have to say that the reception [this summer] at the Flynndog gallery that commemorated Christine Pemberton and her artwork was a profound experience.

I knew Christine for a short time before she passed, and she endeared herself as a kind, friendly, talented person who was dedicated to her art, as well as to the collective.

work on their own or occasionally attend open studios, and others are regular participants. We have open studios twice a week. Mondays are public; Wednesdays are for Howard Center clients only. We are following all COVID guidance and are currently masking and distancing.

You already have an impressive number of events; is there anything else the collective has planned for the future?

We are preparing to paint a mural soon at Brian’s North End Automotive [at 98 North Avenue]. We’ll be painting three garage doors and the side of the building. Tom Stetson will be the lead artist to sketch the designs that we brainstormed as a group, and other members will paint out those designs.

We are participating in the South End Art Hop and will be exhibiting at the Innovation Center for three months.

Just a Click Away Local artists show and sell their works on the world wide web

he South End Art Hop is by definition about looking at art, so its dozens of open studios have always been a quintessential aspect of the event. They appeal to attendees strolling through them and artists eager to show — and sell — their work. When COVID-19 put the kibosh on IRL gatherings last year, Christy Mitchell wasted no time getting the artwork online instead.

“Due to the pandemic, we knew we had to do a virtual aspect so people could ‘attend’ safely,” said Mitchell, executive director of the South End Arts and Business Association, which produces the Art Hop. “We spent the summer building a new website.”

Every artist who registered for the Art Hop automatically became a member of SEABA and could feature pieces of their work on the SEABA site. Artists showing in the six SEABAcurated venues could, and still do, keep work on the site for the duration of their monthly or quarterly exhibitions.

The best news? Artworks sold like proverbial hotcakes.

“Some artists sold out on the website; others kept selling through the pandemic,” Mitchell said. Specifically, SEABA sold $9,000 worth of art during last year’s Art Hop weekend, and sales on the site have held steady at about $1,000 per month since, she noted.

Matt Larson, who lives in Waterbury Center and maintains a studio in Burlington, sold all six of his vibrant abstract paintings through SEABA during last year’s Art Hop and has sold “another three or four more” on the website over the past year, he said. “That’s a pretty good percentage of my sales,” Larson added.

“It’s worked out well for me, particularly since I don’t have much of a web

presence [otherwise],” he said. “It’s easy, and everyone at SEABA is easy to work with. I hope they’re able to keep doing it.”

Like many artists, Larson said he “likes the art part better than the business part” and just hasn’t gotten around to creating his own website — yet. But if and when he does, he would “definitely” keep work on the SEABA site, as well.

“I think they reach more people than I could on my own,” he said.

“Another nice thing about the site,” Larson continued, “is that you can go see the show,” as the works on the website correspond to SEABA’s Burlington exhibitions. In theory, anyone who lives locally can do so, but, according to Mitchell, some people have been buying art “sight unseen — that is, just online.”

She has a theory about this phenom.

Last year, at least, “people had a little more money from not going out,” Mitchell said. (Not to mention those federal stimulus checks.) “Also, they’re

staying home and looking at their walls.”

While in shutdown, to be sure, many of us gave more thought to our décor.

“And,” Mitchell added, “it feels good to support artists.”

True enough. But chances are, another factor has affected online art sales: the convenience of buying nearly everything from one’s couch. In 2020, more than 2 billion people shopped virtually worldwide, according to digitalcommerce360.com. As for online art sales, in the U.S. alone, the market is expected to reach more than $9 billion by 2024.

Sales in Vermont are a minuscule fraction of that stratospheric number, of course, but there is no reason to expect that online art purchases will decline here or anywhere.

If you prefer to see, and buy, artwork in person, rest assured that this year’s Art Hop will present real live artists in their studios, as well as virtual offerings. Just be prepared to don a face mask. m

The ‘Kids Hop’ rejoins the Burlington Farmers Market on Saturday, supported by Northfield Savings Bank from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., with inperson activities and goodie bags for families to take home.

The ‘SEABA Artist Market’ returns to a dedicated space at the corner of Howard and Pine streets on Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., thanks to continued support from Northfield Savings Bank. This safe shopping event requires mask wearing; extras will be provided. Nearly 30 artist vendors on site will have an array of items for everyone on your list. So meet the artists and shop directly from the source!

On Friday and Saturday evenings, we encourage you to take a cruise through the South End Arts District from sundown to 11 p.m. for ‘Light Hop’, supported by Burlington Electric Department. Enjoy a tour of historical buildings lit up at night by Satellite Arts Productions, and visit Switchback Brewery for lighting installations inside and out!

The Friday Night Pine Street Closure between Kilburn & Howard is back from 5 p.m. - 10 p.m. with support from Mascoma Bank! Spread out and walk freely between sites and free music at ‘Backside 405’. Kilburn and Howard Streets will be open, with a detour on St. Paul for cars. Additional Block Party support from Ben & Jerry’s, with free ice cream truck returning next year!

The STRUT! Fashion Show will now take place in May of 2022 on its own dedicated weekend! Stay tuned for Calls for Designers.

COVID SAFETY

The entire South End Arts District takes community safety seriously. Follow all posted signage on mask wearing and capacities. Use hand sanitizing stations or bring your own.

If you are not feeling well or have been in contact with someone with COVID-19, please stay home. You may enjoy the exhibitions online, and curated exhibitions are on view for up to three months.

PARKING + TRANSPORTATION

Parking is available behind The Maltex building at 431 Pine Street; in the second lot at The Innovation Center at 128 Lakeside Avenue; and behind Switchback Brewery at 180 Flynn Avenue. We ask that you walk and bike when possible and be respectful of curbside business areas and pedestrian thoroughfares.

Food this year is provided by a select number of food trucks, and all of the wonderful South End Arts District restaurants and breweries.

We encourage you to check their reservation policies before arriving.

Mark Van Wagner

Mark Van Wagner has worked in the contemporary art world for more than 30 years. Born in Rye, N.Y., he received his fine arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and studied art history and urban planning at Colorado College.

Van Wagner’s artworks reference and combine various geometric components, anthropomorphic characteristics, and various investigations of the inner and outer landscape. Over the years, he has collected natural and pigmented sands from around the world, incorporating this substance into his layered-relief paintings and sculptures. He has recognized sand to be the most literal medium to capture material decomposition - its essence defining impermanence related to time, place and gross matter.

T

he first time I stumbled into the South End Art Hop was one hell of a night. Having only moved to town a month or so prior, I was unaware that, for one weekend a year, Burlington’s South End would turn into a series of block parties featuring stunning local art, great Vermont music and that coolest of currencies: weird stuff.

It’s the weirdness, or perhaps the randomness, of the Art Hop that has always attracted me to the event. The South End Arts and Business Association knows how to throw a festival, but magic can be found by just wandering around, bumbling into some studio you hadn’t known existed.

In addition to finding cool visual art, I’ve seen many bands for the first time at the Art Hop. The musicians might be surrounded by industrial materials or blank canvases, or stuffed into a room that smells like pottery. There’s something special about discovering music like this.

Of course, more conventional venues hop on the bandwagon over the weekend, too. What follows is a stroll through the offerings known as of this writing.

You can, as Aleister Crowley put it, “do what thou wilt.”

Friday has traditionally been the more entertainment-heavy night of the Art Hop, but in recent years, more music has popped up on Saturday night, as well.

Going north to south, let’s start with the DEMOCRACY CREATIVE studio (266 Pine Street). The space will host an event titled “I AM YOU, YOU ARE ME, WE”

on Friday night. Visual artist liza_s_art will collaborate with a series of DJs, starting with Radu at 5 p.m. DJ TwoSev will follow, then DJ Taka at 8 p.m. The show will culminate with a set from rapper Heady Betty.

As in past years, CITIZEN CIDER (316 Pine Street) will host an artists’ market in the parking lot on Friday from 6 to 10:30 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. Danny & the Parts will kick off the tunes on Friday at 6:30 p.m. with their own brand of Americana, followed by soft-rockers Pontoon.

Citizen Cider event organizer Matt Perry said bands will perform on the loading-dock stage on Saturday, as well: Brit Kane & Co. at 6 p.m., followed by Happy Spangler at 7.

Local music fans wondered about the fate of ARTSRIOT (400 Pine Street) after its sale last year. Would music still be a

part of the operation? Since opening in 2013, the club has hosted some of the best music of Art Hop weekend.

New owner Alan Newman seems poised to continue the tradition. DJ Cre8 will spin records outside on the deck on Friday starting at 6 p.m., then surf-rockers Barbacoa will hit the indoor stage at 8. Hip-hop acts Suspect Behavior and Rivan C. will close out the night.

Saturday’s highlights include what Newman called a “visual show” from artist Eyelingual at 2 p.m. and a closing set at 9:30 from roots rockers the Wormdogs. ArtsRiot will also host an artist after-party on Sunday at 4 p.m. if you want to hobnob with the talent.

A different sort of musical art will take place just down the street at STERLING FURNITURE WORKS (422 Pine Street).

Find more off-the-beaten-path music-related programming at BIG HEAVY WORLD (4 Howard Street, A-8), next to the SEABA office. Executive director Jim Lockridge is eager to share a few new projects with the local scene.

“We’ll be unveiling a 43-foot-long mural made up of photos of over 200 local musicians,” Lockridge said. He and photographer (and Seven Days contributor) Luke Awtry took the photos during sessions of “Rocket Shop Local Music Radio Hour,” a weekly program on 105.9 FM the Radiator.
