SCHOOL PROSPECTUS

DEAR READER, We look forward to coming to work each morning! This brochure will help you to understand why! Apart from conveying a sense of our school’s vibrant and positive culture, it should provide you with the information you need. These are challenging and exciting times. Society is rapidly changing and the graduates of the future will face many challenges. At ISA, a commitment to innovative pedagogy and a focus on individual student needs, ensure that our students will indeed be ‘fit for the future’. ISA is an increasingly busy and productive place. In addition to the many annual events that are a regular part of our calendar, new initiatives from students, parents and teachers further enrich school life from year to year. We would like to thank our staff, students and parents. They work very hard to make ISA a wonderful place to learn and work. We look forward to welcoming you when you come to see ISA for yourself!

WE LIVE OUR

MISSION It is our mission to create a welcoming school environment where open-mindedness and respect are fostered. Here learners are challenged and supported to achieve their unique potential and to become confident, caring citizens of the world.

MISSION AND OUR PHILOSOPHY PHILOSOPHY International School Augsburg is committed to creating and maintaining a collaborative community in which learners can discover and develop their talents and fulfil their individual potential. We provide a balanced, intellectually challenging programme which fosters in students the skills, knowledge and attitudes that enable them to be successful in school and in life. We value the diversity of cultures within our school and our links to the local and global community. We recognise and accept our responsibility to promote intercultural understanding and to contribute to a sustainable, peaceful world.

WE HAVE HIGH STANDARDS INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE ORGANIZATION ISA has been an IB World School since 2008, when it was authorised to offer the IB Primary Years Programme. Authorisation to offer the IB Diploma followed in 2009. The IB has commended the school ‘for its expressed commitment to continual development’ and ‘for creating a strong collective identity and sense of common purpose.’

Students may graduate with either IGCSEs (Mittlere Reife) or the IB Diploma (Allgemeine Hochschulreife / Internationales Abitur). The IB Diploma enables them to apply at universities around the world.

Council of International Schools In 2012, after undergoing a rigorous evaluation, ISA was successfully accredited by this reputable international agency. The Accreditation Team report closed with the words: The Visiting Team is in respectful awe of what has been achieved in the very short live of this school.

New England Association of Schools and Colleges In 2012, after undergoing a rigorous evaluation, ISA was successfully accredited by this reputable United States agency. The Accreditation Team report noted: ‘ISA is a growing and evolving school with a clear vision, sound leadership and committed teachers and staff.’

Cambridge Examinations Board In 2009, the school received certification to become an examinations centre for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSEs). ISA students successfully sit these exams each year. Local German students may have these recognised Mittlere Reife.

The International Baccalaureate Programmes have their roots in the philosophy of the German educator Kurt Hahn. Hahn’s vision for education was one of promoting peace, service and leadership and experiential education. At ISA, we expect students to develop as leaders and to take initiative. Opportunities for developing leadership skills are provided through student council / VoISA, student-led assemblies, Model United Nations, The International Award, the Interact Club and Community Service (CAS). From an early age, ISA students learn to speak in front of an audience. Annual service projects such as ‘Make a Difference Day’ and volunteering in Zambia or South Africa allow students to find out first-hand about life in less-developed parts of the world. ISA students learn to face challenges, take risks, develop open-mindedness and confidence.

“We are all better than we know. If only we can be brought to realise this, we may never be prepared to settle for anything less.”

WE ARE ALL

LEARNERS “My time spent working at ISA has, quite simply, made me a better teacher. The close-knit community of teachers actively foster a supportive professional environment, characterised by trust, rigour, and an infectious passion for the craft. In this unique climate I found myself being more ambitious, adventurous, and artful in my teaching than ever before. Josh Parker, former teacher. We hire teachers who are passionate not just about teaching, but about learning. Significant investment in professional training, as well as collaboration with their colleagues ensures that our teachers continue to grow professionally. This professional culture is greatly valued by our staff.

BEGINNING

THE JOURNEY Our Early Learning Centre (ELC) is open to children between the ages of 3 and 6. The school day runs from 9:00 until 15:30 (Fridays until 14:00). In the case of the very young or new students, a flexible schedule or reduced day may be agreed. There is supervision from 8:00. Small groups of children are directed by a qualified teacher and supported by assistants. Movement, Music and German lessons are provided by specialist teachers. Promoting a love of books, creativity and excitement for learning are key goals as children start their learning journeys. The development of social and communication skills is a priority.

The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) perfectly supports the child’s natural curiosity and acknowledges the diversity of our learners. The ELC children enjoy learning about themselves, the local community and their world. Reading, writing and numeracy are introduced in an authentic and supportive environment.

ART CAMP GRADE 3

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL The Elementary School begins in Grade 1 and ends with Grade 5. Our goals during the elementary years are to keep students excited about learning, to develop in them positive attitudes to learning and to themselves as learners. In Elementary School they acquire the habits, skills and attitudes that prepare them for the more specialised and rigorous learning of the Upper School programmes. The Elementary School is an authorised IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) school. The PYP is a transdisciplinary, inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning. Students are encouraged to connect their learning to real world situations and to consider how they can make a difference. New students are provided with intensive English language support and all students learn German. Other subjects include Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Music, Art, Sports and Mother Tongue. The PYP is a transdisciplinary approach to teaching and students are encouraged to see connections among aspects of their learning and to real world situations. Students are provided with intensive English language support and all students learn German. Other subjects include Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Music, Art, Sports and Mother Tongue.

Parents often comment on how their children apply their learning at home and how they remember what they have learnt as each year’s course of units builds on the previous one. ‘Parents as Partners’ workshops help parents to understand what we teach and how we teach so that they can support their children at home. Field trips, guest speakers, performances, projects and a wide range of technology resources support learning and provide opportunities for students to apply and share what they have learnt. The IB Learner Profile is is an integral part of our philosophy and pedagogy. The ten attributes describe an interculturally competent, global citizen. These are central to character development at ISA.

WE LEARN FOR

 LIFE

MIDDLE SCHOOL Our Middle School caters for students from Grade 6 to 8. The programme builds on the learning of the PYP and prepares students for the rigour of IGCSE examinations (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) and the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Teachers are attentive to the very special social and emotional needs of young people between the ages of 12 and 15 and provide a range of opportunities for them to develop confidence and independence.

Annual events to celebrate student learning in the arts, humanities and science are fixed in the Middle School calendar. These encourage authentic student learning and the development of the attributes of the IB Learner Profile. Students have a balanced range of opportunities to develop their knowledge, express their ideas with confidence and to approach unfamiliar situations with courage and independence. Middle School assemblies celebrate student learning and achievement and cultivate a sense of belonging and Middle School identity.

WE STRIVE

FOR SUCCESS HIGH SCHOOL High School spans the last four years of Upper School. The programme is rigorous and aims to give students the skills, knowledge, attitudes and work habits they will need for third level education. A broad sports programme, community service and opportunities to explore the arts allow students to develop their personalities and talents.

During Grades 9 and 10 students prepare to sit the IGCSE (Cambridge Examinations Centre). During Grades 11 and 12 students prepare for their final exam, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. Both qualifications are internationally recognised. Successful IB Diploma graduates are eligible to study at universities both in Germany and abroad; the IB is eagerly accepted by universities in over 100 countries around the world.

OUR

„ISA is a place where mistakes are no barrier, where talents are seen and polished and where it is okay to be different. The ISA community is one family, and we will always support one another when obstacles are difficult to master by ourselves.“ Lisa Deurer – Graduate of 2016 - studying Fashion Design at Parsons University in New York

GRADUA TION CLASS OF 2017 The IB Diploma is an academically demanding two-year course, throughout which students must complete a number of extended assignments as well as creative and community projects in addition to their academic learning. All assignments and the final examinations are marked externally by international examiners. We are very proud of the fact that for the past five years all students have been awarded with an IB Diploma (100 % pass rate). The average score each year is consistently above the world average and several students have achieved the exceptional and rare score of 45 points. However, it is the individual success stories that really matter and each year we are thrilled to witness students find their passion and begin to pursue their dreams. ISA graduates are now attending reputable universities in Germany and abroad, studying in a range of disciplines including the Arts and Media, Medicine, Engineering, Law, International Business and Science.

Although ISA is a relatively young school, it is already evident that former students have benefited tremendously from their ISA experience. ISA graduates are now attending reputable universities in Germany and abroad, studying in a range of disciplines including the Arts and Media, Medicine, Engineering, Law, International Business and Science. Others are pursuing a range of professions, so that we will also count teachers, bankers, helicopter pilots, paratroopers, translators and nurses, among our alumni.

WE

Throughout their years at ISA, our students explore a wide range of media and create both 2D and 3D works of art. The IB Diploma Visual Arts course allows students to explore a range of techniques and experiment in their preferred medium. They study art through a range of perspectives; cultural, traditional, historical and contemporary. The students visit and create exhibitions, talk to curators, meet artists and learn to sculpt, paint, draw, design and work with digital media.

ENJOY CREATING ART ISA ART AWARD EXHIBITION 2017 Art exhibitions and installations, both on campus and at external venues provide opportunities to work against deadlines, strive for excellence and celebrate success. Links with local art institutions and artists are well-established. A number of ISA graduates have chosen to study art or related subjects such as film and media, fashion and sportswear design.

WE LOVE MAKING

 MUSIC

MUSIC CAMP GRADE 3

An extensive Instrumental Programme provides further opportunities for students who wish to learn an additional instrument (piano, guitar, violin, cello, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, percussion) or develop their singing. Musical events play an important part in school life and concerts are a regular occurrence throughout the school year.

Musical performance is central to learning at ISA and is taught from ELC through to Grade 8. All students have the chance to learn to play an instrument or to join the orchestra. The music department is well-equipped with instruments: pianos, three digital pianos, Orff-instruments, guitars, drums, class sets of string instruments, brass and percussion instruments. In the Lower School the emphasis is on music-making (singing, playing, moving to

music) while fostering musical appreciation and an awareness of music in cultural and historical contexts. All students learn to play instruments. This begins in Grade 2 with the recorder (BlockflĂśte) and continues in Grade 3, when all learn to play a string instrument (violin, cello or double bass). In Middle School, students learn to play a brass or wind instrument (trumpet, trombone, saxophone, clarinet), to create their own music and to appreciate compositions.

WE PERFO

RM WITH JOY

DRAMA CLASS

Dramatic performance has a strong tradition at ISA and there are many performances throughout the year. The school currently cooperates with the Augsburg Theatre and the Abraxas Theatre. Drama lessons focus on the creative process, providing students with a wonderful avenue for self-expression and a ‘safe place’ to experiment and make mistakes. Skills learnt through drama strengthen self-awareness and build confidence. Regular assemblies allow students to practice their communication and performance skills. In the Lower School, story-telling, role-play and drama games are used to support learning. In Grades 6 to 8, Drama is taught as a specialist subject, on a weekly basis.

There are numerous opportunities for performance both in school and at external venues including local halls, museums and other spaces. Performances to date include: ‘The Wizard of Oz’, ‘Death to the Minotaur’, ‘Seussical’, ‘Charlotte‘s Web’ and ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. Students benefit from workshops led by local and international experts.

WE ARE READERS

AND RESEARCHERS Our library / media centre is an inspirational place where the joy of reading is promoted and inquiry skills are supported. The centre boasts a collection of almost 15,000 fiction and non-fiction books. Ten computer stations, an interactive whiteboard and tablets are available for research and learning. The well-qualified library staff support students in developing effective research skills. We enjoy a productive cooperation with the local Gersthofen and Augsburg libraries. We have access to the Augsburg University library.

Many special events throughout the year are designed to celebrate reading and engage students as readers: for example ‘World Book Day’, ‘World Poetry Day’, Blind Date with a Book and the ISA annual Book Week. Guest poets, authors and storytellers are a regular feature. Staff, students and an enthusiastic team of parents work hard to organise these events.

The library provides opportunities for students to discuss literature and recommend books or authors to others. Initiatives, such as the Hänsel & Gretel Readers’ Choice Award and participation in the annual local ‘Vorlesewettbewerb’ for Grade 6 raise awareness about literature. The ISA library / media centre also supports adult learners by providing workshops for local and international teachers as well as English / German language lessons for parents.

WE WELCOME

CHALLENGES ISA FITNESS ROOM Team sports foster sportsmanship and help our school to develop links with local and other international schools. Football, basketball and volleyball teams compete successfully against other schools. The outdoor education programme allows students from Grades 6 to 9 to experience the challenge and thrill of camping in all weathers, orienteering, water-rafting, skiing and a range of team-building activities set against the spectacular Bavarian landscape.

Students from ELC to High School attend weekly Physical Education lessons. These cover team sports, gymnastics and physical fitness. The school’s excellent on-site resources include a modern fitness suite, a wellequipped gymnasium and a multipurpose sports court. In addition, ISA utilises a range of local community facilities to provide opportunities for swimming, climbing, football and golf.

The extra-curricular programme provides students with further opportunities to explore additional aspects of sports and movement, for example athletics, basketball, badminton, climbing, cross-fit, football, hiking, Frisbee, running, street hockey, tennis and volleyball.

N BEYOND THE CLASSROOM A broad range of extra-curricular activities is offered at ISA. These vary each year and may include Tennis, Badminton, hockey, Aikido, Taekwando, jewellery making, Arts and Crafts, Reading Club, Homework Club, Junior Ballet, Drama and Creative Dance.

Each year students take part in very successful week-long off-site camps facilitated by our Outdoor Education partner, ‘Naturbegeistert’ The students enjoy testing their boundaries and embracing challenge through activities such as rafting, mountain biking, climbing, hiking, canyoning, orienteering. Team-building activities and leadership experiences are an integral part of the camp experience. Students return home exhilarated and happy. These camps are an opportunity to make new friends, discover new interests and talents, and strengthen class spirit.

WE

Students have many opportunities to develop leadership skills during their time at ISA; within the classroom, through student council and community service, and through involvement in the Duke of Edinburgh International Award and Model United Nations.

Duke of Edinburgh (International Award) Student enthusiasm for both the bronze and the silver level of the International Award has been impressive. Students approach their tasks with a high level of motivation and even the strenuous expedition in which they have to hike 12 kilometres each day, carrying all of their own equipment does not deter them!

ARE LEADERS Voices of ISA (VoISA) is a student-initiated structure at ISA. All students are members and all may attend meetings. VoISA allows student voices to be heard and this group is active in initiating student-led creative and community projects.

Model United Nations MUN An average of fourteen student delegates take part in the Model United Nations Conferences at local schools. The students represent a range of world nations and debate topics of real global significance with students from all over the world. They develop and present resolutions on issues such as; ‘The right to food’ ‘universal access to reproductive health and rights’ and ‘the conservation and sustainable use of marine resources’.

WE CARE

ABOUT OTHERS

REFLECTIONS “Zambia was not only about finding out about Zambia but also about finding myself.” Luca Held, Student Volunteer

“There are no words to explain the emotions, feelings and moments I experienced in Zambia. This trip was an incredible, eyeopening experience. It taught me to be more appreciative and altruistic, and has definitely changed the way I want to live my life.“ Laura Martinez Lopez, Teacher Volunteer

Each year, Grade 11 students have the chance to experience first-hand the challenges of life in a developing country as well as the sheer joy of helping to improve the lives of others. Our school partnership with the Luloboyola School in Mazabuka, is very close to our hearts. On alternate years a group of students and teachers spends two weeks in Zambia supporting orphan boys and volunteering on a farm and in the school. Every other year, Grade 11 students may join a service trip to South Africa. Both projects are run in cooperation with the Irish organisation, SERVE. Our bi-annual ‘Make a Difference Day’, provides students of all ages the chance to work together to support our local community. On that day, students are off campus working at old people’s homes, animal shelters, or Kindergartens and

helping with gardening, painting, building and other tasks. Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS), key elements of the IB Diploma Programme involve students in a range of non-academic pursuits, so that they can explore their passions and develop their personalities. The rotary-related Interact Club unites young people who are passionate about service. They meet each week to plan ways to support the local and global communities. Finally, there are so many ways in which students of all ages show they care about others. The school year is year is filled with student-initiated bake sales, raffles, table quizzes and other creative initiatives that raise both money and social awareness.

WE SPEA

K MANY LANGUAGES As an IB World School, we have a mission is to help our students to understand the cultural perspectives of others. Our vibrant Mother Tongue Programme supports this goal. We offer the following language courses: French Hindi Italian Japanese Korean Polish Russian Spanish Turkish Lessons take place once a week during the school day. These lessons help students to maintain and develop their home languages. Our teachers are qualified native speakers who are passionate about supporting our students as they adapt to their new environment.

ASSEMBLIES Mother Tongue Assemblies are fantastic events enjoyed by all. Our international students enjoy presenting songs, poems or short plays that tell about the important festivals and traditions in their cultures. These assemblies are valuable opportunities for our community to discover and appreciate the similarities and differences across cultures and to celebrate our wonderful diversity.

WE ARE LOCAL AND

INTERNATIONAL

Total enrolment: 342 Internationals: 42,5 % 38 nationalities: 7 % American  6 % French, British  3 % Japanese,  2 % Italian, Spanish, Indian, Russian 28 mother tongues:  10 mother tongue language programmes including Mandarin  14 % English mother tongue

ISA is a truly international community. Our staff and students come from more than 30 different countries and speak many languages. Just over half of our students are local German children, but ISA is increasingly attended by the children of internationally-mobile Germans who have attended international schools in other countries, or intend to move abroad in the future. For all of us, ISA is a second home! We are all proud of our individual heritages but equally keen to know about and understand other cultures. We enjoy living in the beautiful and historic Augsburg area and getting to know our host culture and language. Long-term enrolment potential is estimated to be between 550 and 600 students, based on the current international school enrolment in the Munich area.

WE ARE ENTERPRISING Plan

We are proud to be the very first school in Germany to become a not-for-profit Aktiengesellschaft (gAG). We know that others will follow our lead. This new structure strengthens our sustainability and potential for growth. It has inspired many community members as well as local companies to invest in ISA by buying shares. We think it is fantastic to be able to remain connected to each and every one of our alumni; they all become shareholders on their graduation day.

SUPERVISORY BOARD Our young school continues to mature and is increasingly diverse and vibrant. It is very pleasing to witness the steady development of enrolment, in particular the growth of the international community. ISA’s excellent academic reputation has contributed to this positive growth, as has the dedication and hard work of leadership and staff. Teacher retention at ISA is much higher that at other international schools and I believe this is a reflection of our very positive culture and shared vision. On behalf of the ISA Supervisory Board, I would like to thank our staff members and our highly engaged parent community for all they do to make ISA a positive and exciting place to learn.

Our parents are truly ‘our partners’ and this partnership is crucial for the development of our children and our school. I would like to sincerely thank all of the ISA associates for their support; our sponsors and the ‘Friends of ISA’, and most especially our shareholders, for their commitment to international education. I am very confident that International School Augsburg is becoming a bright light in the world of international education. Karl Moser Chairman of the Supervisory Board

FRIENDS OF ISA Soon after its foundation, International School Augsburg had proven itself to be a welcome and necessary addition to the local infrastructure. It quickly became clear that in order to secure positive growth, the school would need reliable sponsors and supporters. A small number of committed local companies established a fundraising association, and in March 2006 the ‘Freunde der International School Augsburg ISA e.V.’ was founded.

Currently, the ‘Friends of ISA’ Association boasts over 180 members. Contributions serve to supplement the running budget and enable the realisation of a broad range of additional educational projects. ‘International Education needs Funding!’ is the motto that drives the ‘Friends’ association. New members are always welcome and there are several membership packages to choose from. All of our graduating students receive a lifetime free membership of the association.
