About Taichung Taichung, in a key central Taiwan location, plays an essential role in both Taiwan's economic development and transportation systems. It is the hub for the five cities and counties in the central Taiwan region. Following the merger of Taichung city and county on December 25, 2010, Greater Taichung became third-largest among Taiwan's five special municipalities with a population of 2,720,000 people. Medical Condition & Health Insurance

in Taiwan

According to National Geographic Magazine’s documentary in 2012, Taiwan’s medical quality is ranked number three worldwide and number one in Asia. Moreover, with our own health insurance system made provision by government, civilians are entitled to affordable medical help of average. However, there are also some difficulties we confront and struggle to solve, such as overworking of medical workers, abusing of medical resources etc. During the lecture given by Doctor Tsai, Ming-Che, the chairman of medicine department of CSMU, also a very experienced clinical surgeon,

AMSA CSMU

everyone is ensured not only to reflect on Taiwan’s medical condition and system but also to ponder on how to create a better environment for both medical workers and patients beyond borders.

Chinese Medicine 101 Through the lecture we may understand deeper about acupuncture, cupping, acupoint, Chinese Herb Ointment and Chinese Herb Cuisine. Chinese medicine is originated in China from over thousands years ago. Nowadays, Chinese medicine is still practiced among Chinese society and some westerners, though it is regarded as the third oldest medicine system in the world. On contrary to modern medicine, traditional Chinese medicine holds a different perspective of human body. It values long term nursing to keep balance of yin and yang and also views human

AMSA CSMU

body as a unity but not separately as organs.

17

During Chinese medicine 101 we will have a fundamental course on some most famous therapies of Chinese medicine. Also, we will get to practice by ourselves to experience these age-old therapies. As a result of emphasis on long term nursing, there is a lot of usage of Chines herbs in Chinese medicine. In Chinese herbs cuisine cooking course, we will learn to cook a popular Chinese herb dish known for high nutrition and is good for your health. Last but not least, there will going to be an ointment making course where we learn to make

traditional Chinese ointment to relief muscle ache.

Chung Shan Hospital Tour One of the features of medical universities in Taiwan is that almost every school has its own hospital and normally alongside campus, and Chung Shan Medical University has no exception. Established in 1966, Chung Shan University Hospital is now one of the biggest hospitals in Taichung city. In the hospital tour, we will also be introduced to one of the world’s most progressive technology, the Da Vinci Surgical System. It is famous for its various advantages compared to traditional surgery, including a smaller cut, lower infection rate, shorter extension of average surgery time, less occurrence of complications etc. We will also get the chance
