Ashreya Charitable Society Impacting Individuals, Transforming Society

Another year comes to a close. It’s been a year with many challenges but with still 3 months to go before the academic year ends, we can look back with a thankful heart for all those who stood with us and helped us and we now look forward with hope that we will surely see Ashreya Charitable Society do more to impact the community we serve.

A seminar on the Importance of Spoken English and How to Overcome Exam Stress was conducted by three members of an organisation named Changing Lives by Changing Attitudes. They visited the school on 11th December 2014 and conducted the seminar. The Ashreya Home continues with three resident boys. One of them is in need of cosmetic surgery to correct a birth defect. We are looking for sponsors to help with this need. We hope to have more needy children in the home over the next few months. As we look ahead into 2015, we wish to inform you that we are pursuing the case for recognition up to Class X by the State Department of Education. The process though slow is still on track and clearances have been obtained from several concerned departments before forwarding our proposal to the Regional Director of Education.

Since our last newsletter in August, there have been many significant happenings. Here are a few : Teachers’ Day was celebrated on 5th September. The teachers were honoured by L&T CSR friends in a function at the school in the morning and later that afternoon, the Ashreya members hosted a lunch for teachers and staff at Hotel Budhill Park. Dr. Suguna Kannan, former Head of the Dept. of Home Science, St. Joseph's College for Women, Vizag was the chief guest.

Annual Medical Camp - The Larsen &Toubro CSR wing conducted a medical camp at the school premises on 6th Sept where 300 children and 180 parents benefitted from free check-up including referrals to Vasan Eye Care. We are happy that these children have the privilege of having regular medical check-up courtesy of our partners and sponsors

Thank you for your interest and support. Every blessing Team Ashreya

The Parent-Teacher Interaction held on 17th Sept saw 150 parents making time to attend and participate actively in their children's schooling. October was the month of the Dussera vacations and later came the super cyclone Hudhud that devastated the city of Vizag. The school building suffered some damage to window pane shutters and doors in the cyclonic winds that ripped the city of all its green cover in a few hours and totally disrupted life for a week. Super Cyclone Hudhud-People of this port city woke up Sunday morning, October 12th, to unprecedented havoc. Life came to a standstill as the city was totally paralysed with no water, power or communication. The nightmare got worse as prices of essential commodities sky-rocketed, all means of transportation came to a halt and many lost homes and livelihood. Despite a proactive administration and valiant preparatory efforts by the Chief Minister, the extent of the natural calamity was mammoth.

Ashreya Charitable Society helped in providing relief to many whose homes were damaged,to community meeting halls that were destroyed.

To people who lost their livelihood, we were able to help them start earning afresh by providing basic material to repair and restart their work.Work is progressing in other locations and is yet to be completed.

TWO stainless steel water drums were provided by the school staff from the profits made on the stationery mini storestarted last year. These water containers are placed in each floor of the school so children don't have to run down the staircase two floors to have a drink of water. Thanks to the staff of the school for providing these drums.

Recognition of services - In recognition of its services to the community and for its performance during 2014-15, the L&T CSR wing presented a memento to the Ashreya Charitable Society at a function held. Mr. N Eswar Rao, school correspondent, received the memento at Hotel Grand Bay on 22nd November.

Replacing green cover - Post Hudhud, the senior students of the School were involved in planting tree saplings beside the roads near the school to replace green cover lost in the area due to the cyclone. In the picture students are seen planting an Asoka tree.

Annual Picnic -The children of the School had a fun outing on 9th December to Yarada Beach. L&T provided us three of their buses making it possible for 140 children and staff to have this excursion.Everyone of the staff and students enjoyed the day.
