Community News A Letter from your Community Manager JUST SAY NO TO LITTERING It is estimated that several trillion cigarette butts are littered worldwide every year. In fact, cigarettes are the most littered item in America and the world. Cigarette filters are made of cellulose acetate tow, NOT COTTON, and they can take decades to degrade. Not only does cigarette litter ruin even the most picturesque setting, but the toxic residue in cigarette filters is damaging to the environment, and littered butts cause numerous fires every year, some of them fatal. CigaretteLitter.Org is a not-forprofit organization dedicated to running educational campaigns aimed at significantly reducing the amount of cigarette litter. Most people who litter their cigarettes either don’t fully understand the consequences of their actions or they have rationalized the behavior.

This web site and our other educational efforts are designed to get the facts out about cigarette litter to both smokers and non-smokers. Once people know the truth, they will be much more hesitant to unthinkingly flick their cigarette butts on the ground. “[Cigarette butts] also present a threat to wildlife. Cigarette filters have been found in the stomachs of fish, birds, whales and other marine creatures who mistake them for food ... Composed of cellulose acetate, a form of plastic, cigarette butts can persist in the environment as long as other forms of plastic.” Please explore this site and help spread the word about cigarette litter. We can be successful at eliminating this unnecessary nuisance by working together to get the facts out and to raise public awareness on the issue.

HOW CUPID CAME ABOUT Cupid is the most famous of Valentine symbols and everybody knows that boy armed with bow and arrows, and piercing hearts. He is known as a mischievous, winged child. The arrows signify desires and emotions of love, and Cupid aims those arrows at gods and humans, causing them to fall deeply in love. Cupid has always played a role in the celebrations of love and lovers. In ancient Greece he was known as Eros, the young son of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. To the Roman’s he was Cupid, and his mother was Venus. There is a very interesting story about Cupid and his mortal bride Psyche in Roman mythology. Venus was jealous of the beauty of Psyche, and ordered Cupid to punish the mortal. But instead, Cupid fell deeply in love with her. He took her as his wife, but as a mortal she was forbidden to look at him. Psyche was happy until her sisters persuaded her to look at Cupid. As soon as Psyche looked at Cupid, Cupid punished her by leaving her. Their lovely castle and gardens vanished too. Psyche found herself alone in an open field with no signs of other beings or Cupid. As she wandered trying to find her love, she came upon the temple of Venus. Wishing to destroy her, the goddess of love gave Psyche a series of tasks, each harder and more dangerous then the last. For her last task Psyche was given a little box and told to take it to the underworld. She was told to get some of the beauty of Proserpine, the wife of Pluto, and put it in the box. During her trip she was given tips on avoiding the dangers of the realm of the dead. She was also warned not to open the box. But Temptation overcame Psyche and she opened the box. But instead of finding beauty, she found deadly slumber. Cupid found her lifeless on the ground. He gathered the deadly sleep from her body and put it back in the box. Cupid forgave her, as did Venus. The gods, moved by Psyche’s love for Cupid, made her a goddess. Today, Cupid and his arrows have become the most popular of love signs, and love is most frequently depicted by two hearts pierced by an arrow, Cupid’s arrow.

LIGHTING OF THE FLAME

ARE YOU AN IDOL FAN

GOING OUT OF BUSINESS

NBC will be airing the live coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony.

American Idol is one of those shows that either you love it, or you simply can’t “not” look at the horror in front of you. The auditions are happening now and this year is serving up the craziness like every year before.

Have you noticed all of the businesses going OUT of business? What is even worse about that is the fact that MANY times it did not have to happen.

On February 12, 2010 the lights in Vancouver’s BC Place will grow dark and there will be the lighting of the Olympic flame. John Furlong has not revealed what will take place during the lighting ceremony but he has promised that it will “unite passionate Canadians, thrill the world’s best winter athletes and bring hope to the world over”. This is the first Indoor opening ceremony and they have kept it a well guarded secret only to be revealed on opening night.

All I can say is I can’t wait to see what Ellen is going to bring to the table. Many have been skepticle of her coming on the show, but I can’t wait! It looks like there is going to be some pretty good singing talent on the show this year also. So another year of “who is your favorite?” has started so let the crazy American Idol addiction begin.

If a company isn’t marketing and thinking outside of the box with its customer relations and exposUre, then perhaps it is unavoidable. It starts with exposUre, get people talking about the services or products you offer. After all, if they do not know about you, then how do they know about you? Seems crazy simple doesn’t it? Get inexpensive adveritising right now - 770-886-1881.

EATING WELL ALL DAY A SOLUTION FOR WEIGHT MANAGEMENT Eating well means planning ahead, which is essential if you want to achieve or maintain weight-loss goals for the New Year. With a little knowledge and some advance planning, people everywhere can learn how to make smart food choices that will move them closer to their weight-management goals. From breakfast to dinner and snacks in between, a successful weight-management plan is the all-day, everyday solution. Those looking to manage their weight and live a more active lifestyle should consider the following tips: Break the fast: Starting your day with cereal can provide essential vitamins and minerals. Studies show that eating cereal as part of a nutritious breakfast promotes a healthy weight in both children and adults. Plan ahead: Planned snacks during your busy day can provide energy and essential nutrients. Tempted to hit that vending machine? Have lowercalorie snacks on hand. Divide your plate: Divide your plate, conquer your weight. Fill half of your plate with veggies or salad (watch those fatty dressings!). One-quarter should be lean protein-fish, chicken or beef-grilled, baked or poached. And the last quarter should be carbohydrates-but watch the butter and oil. Drink your H2O: Feeling tired or hungry? You may just be thirsty. Make sure you get plenty of water every day. Water helps your body transport nutrients and eliminate toxins. Add a cucumber or lemon slice to jazz it up. Start journaling: Keep a food journal noting what you eat, how much, when and where. Journaling can help keep you accountable and identify unhealthy patterns that may be inhibiting weight loss.

MOVIE REVIEW - AVATAR

RESTAURANT REVIEW

GOOD OR BAD?

SIP RESTAURANT

James Cameron’s Avatar is receiving a lot of mixed publicity lately. Everyone has an Avatar opinion or review, and everybody seems to have varying opinions. There are many people that are captivated by the story and by the director’s earth shattering special effects. On the other hand there are many critics that think that the story line isn’t as strong as it could be.

Sip Wine Tasting & Tapas Restaurant in Crabapple provides the perfect solution for those who know they want something delicious and satisfying but can’t decide on just one thing.

The story of Avatar has been compared to that of “Pocahontas,” just as the story of “Titanic” has been likened to “Romeo and Juliet.” Some also contend that there are themes of racism and political indoctrination woven into the tapestry that is Avatar. So which is it? Is it an extraordinary movie, or is it a big joke? As with many things, it all depends on what you plan on taking from the movie. If you are looking for a good story, there is some indication that you may be disappointed. If you are looking to be transported in to another world, it appears if you will be very, very pleased.

They had me at “Welcome to SIP”! I walked in to smiling faces and a very warm greeting by their casual yet professional staff. It was cool to be taken on a tour of their retail and dining sides of the restaurant. The place has 200 different bottles of wine to compliment the 50 they have on the menu (more on that in a minute). The highlight of the tour has got to be their übercool wine dispensing machine! You will love the open dining area. I was able to choose from a “sip”, half glass, full glass or bottle of wine. How perfect?!? Cornmeal Crusted Oysters with baby spinach in a bacon Vidalia vinaigrette, Pistachio crusted Scallops, Bacon Wrapped Stuffed Shrimp with peach chipotle BBQ sauce and so many more creations were prepared perfectly. Even the “fries” were amazing. Bottom line - GO NOW!

ATLANTA HAPPENINGS FREE WINE TASTING - You certainly can’t say the best wine is free wine. You cannot, however, deny that free wine of any kind is a good deal. WineStyles Perimeter has free wine tastings on Tuesday nights. Taste of any of six open bottles of wine for no charge. The tasting is from 6-8 p.m. Try something new and exotic or enjoy the familiar. www. winestyles.net SAVE MONEY TO SEE MAMMA MIA - This isn’t a significant savings, but every little bit helps. Using promo code “Dress” when purchasing your tickets to see the musical, “Mamma Mia” at the Fox Theatre, you save $5 per ticket. That amount will be matched and donated to Dress for Success. The musical plays at the Fox Feb. 9-14, and the discounted ticket is available for select performances. Remember you can also save $10 on tickets to shows on Feb. 9 and 10, and Feb. 14, through Travelzoo.com. SPA DEALS - In Atlanta there is no reason to ever pay full price for a massage or spa treatment. There are simply too many deals that slash prices in half — or more. Take this one on Groupon.com, for instance. For $55 — $70 off the regular price — you can get one of six spa treatments at Renewed Image. There is also a bonus side deal that you can check out on the site. There are always great deals to be had for you there. Here at W3 Lifestyle we are always watching for the new offers and best deals to pass on to you. Take our advertisers for example, be sure to check them out and the offers they have for you! Always mention to them that you saw them in our publication and look forward to great service and deals!
