CHASING CASCADES: DISCOVER THE AREAS WILD WATERFALLS

Explore the rugged beauty of the Wisconsin–Michigan borderlands through its breathtaking waterfalls—each one shaped by ancient bedrock, roaring rivers, and deep Northwoods forest. From roadside cascades to wild backcountry drops, these falls offer unforgettable moments for hikers, photographers, paddlers, and anyone seeking a peaceful escape into nature.

BIG BULL FALLS – FLORENCE, WI

Tucked along the Popple River, Big Bull Falls splits around a small island to create two distinct channels—one plunging seven feet in a dramatic drop and the other tumbling over smaller cascades. Surrounded by rugged granite outcrops, the rustic trail provides multiple scenic viewpoints ideal for quiet reflection or photography.

BREAKWATER FALLS (PINE RIVER FALLS) – FLORENCE, WI

Just below the Pine River Dam, this powerful 60-foot, three-tiered cascade carves its way through 2-billion-year-old bedrock. The rushing rapids and dramatic rock formations make it a must-see destination for those who appreciate both raw power and ancient natural beauty.

BULL FALLS – AMBERG, WI

Located along the Pike River, Bull Falls is a serene stop where the river winds through a forested gorge, forming gentle rapids and layered cascades. Its peaceful, narrow canyon offers a quiet retreat for nature lovers.

DAVE’S FALLS – AMBERG, WI

A local favorite on the Pike River, Dave’s Falls features both upper and lower cascades flowing through striking rock formations. Visitors can explore rugged trails, cross the river via a wooden bridge, or enjoy family-friendly amenities like a playground and restrooms. Named after river crew boss Dave Frechette, the falls are a piece of both natural and local history.

EIGHT FOOT FALLS – DUNBAR, WI

Just downstream of its larger neighbor, Twelve Foot Falls, this charming eight-foot drop spills over a rocky ridge into a wide scenic pool. Its quiet beauty makes it perfect for a relaxing stop or a peaceful picnic.

FOUR FOOT FALLS – DUNBAR, WI

A small but beautiful waterfall on the Pike River, Four Foot Falls narrows through a rocky crevice before tumbling into a quiet forest setting. It’s a tranquil hidden gem perfect for a peaceful break in nature.

FUMEE FALLS – QUINNESEC, MI

Just off U.S. Highway 2, this easy-to-access, multi-tiered cascade drops 20–30 feet and makes a lovely roadside stop for travelers heading through Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

JENNINGS FALLS – FLORENCE,

WI

This gentle 10-foot waterfall along the Popple River is surrounded by towering cedars, mossy logs, and serene cascades. Its quiet, secluded atmosphere is ideal for exploration, photography, and moments of calm in the forest.

LASALLE FALLS – FLORENCE, WI

The crown jewel of the region, LaSalle Falls drops 22 feet into a dramatic gorge on the Pine River. Rapids continue for a half-mile downstream, offering unforgettable views from both the trail and the river. Adventurous visitors can explore the gorge by kayak or canoe—an unbeatable perspective of this powerful natural wonder.

LONG SLIDE FALLS – NIAGARA,

WI

One of the area’s most impressive waterfalls, Long Slide Falls descends 50 feet over a long stretch of rugged rock. A short hike leads to dramatic views of the fast-moving water, making it a favorite destination for hikers and photographers alike.

MEYERS FALLS – FLORENCE, WI

This peaceful seven-foot cascade flows over ancient rock formations more than 2 billion years old. Best viewed from the north side, Meyers Falls offers a calming escape framed by lush forest and quiet river scenery.

PIERS GORGE FALLS – NORWAY, MI

Along the Menominee River, Piers Gorge offers some of the region’s most dramatic whitewater. A scenic trail leads to overlooks of Mishicot Falls, Sand Portage Falls, and a series of thundering rapids carving through the rocky gorge. It’s a top destination for hikers, rafters, and anyone who loves high-energy rivers.

ROCK DAM FALLS – NORWAY, MI

Accessible by forest roads north of Iron Mountain, Rock Dam Falls rewards visitors with a scenic drop beside a large rock outcrop and small gorge. A short walk across wooden bridges brings you to Pine Creek and the falls—an excellent stop for those who enjoy quiet, off-the-beaten-path adventures.

SMALLEY FALLS – NIAGARA, WI

A narrow chute waterfall on the Pemebonwon River, Smalley Falls rushes between boulders in a picturesque and peaceful setting—a great complement to nearby Long Slide Falls.

LAKES/FISHING GUIDE

CAST INTO PURE NORTHWOODS SERENITY: FISHING IN DICKENSON

COUNTY, MICHIGAN

Tucked into the heart of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Dickinson County offers anglers the kind of quiet, wild fishing experiences you can’t manufacture—only discover. With forest-lined lakes, winding rivers, and crystal-clear trout streams, the county is a year-round destination for everyone from dedicated anglers to families looking for a peaceful day on the water.

RIVERS THAT KEEP YOU COMING BACK

The Menominee, Sturgeon, and Michigamme rivers are the stars of the county’s fishing scene. Known for their rugged beauty and healthy fish populations, these waters hold smallmouth bass, northern pike, walleye, and seasonal trout runs. Wade anglers and kayakers especially love the Sturgeon River, where cold, fast stretches provide excellent opportunities for trout and spring bass.

For those seeking larger water and big-water species, the Menominee River along the county’s southern edge is legendary—a place where anglers have landed trophy-size bass, walleye, and hard-fighting muskies.

LAKES MADE FOR EVERY ANGLER

Dickinson County’s scenic lakes offer a more relaxed style of fishing, perfect for sunrise outings or a slow afternoon drift. Fumee, Lake Antoine, Sawyer Lake, and Hamilton Lake are well-known for accessible shore fishing and family-friendly amenities. Panfish, perch, bass, and pike are common targets, and many lakes are stocked and managed to keep fishing strong throughout the season.

Kayak anglers, especially, find calm and inviting waters here—ideal for quietly exploring coves and weedlines where the fish like to hide.

ICE FISHING THAT DEFINES THE U.P.

Winter doesn’t slow things down—it simply changes the gear. Once the lakes freeze over, ice anglers dot the frozen landscapes. Lake Antoine and Sawyer Lake are popular early-season destinations, while deeper lakes offer mid-winter action for walleye and pike. Many local bait shops offer up-to-date conditions and gear advice, making it easy for visitors to get started.

A TRUE NORTHWOODS FISHING CULTURE

Whether you’re casting from a riverbank, easing a boat across a still morning lake, or settling into a heated shack on a frozen bay, fishing in Dickinson County is about more than the catch. It’s about the quiet moments—loons calling across the water, the smell of pine, and the chance to reconnect with nature.

For seasoned anglers chasing their next big story or families looking to discover the joy of fishing together, Dickinson County offers a welcoming, unspoiled, and unforgettable place to cast a line.
